Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is a role-playing video game developed by Square and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996. Super Mario RPG's story focuses on Mario and his friends as they seek to defeat the Smithy Gang, who has crashed into their world and scattered the seven star pieces of Star Road. Super Mario RPG is the first RPG in the Mario franchise, drawing from major elements of Square's RPG franchises such as Final Fantasy. The main form of fighting enemies is turn-based combat with a party of up to three characters. It is also the first game in the Mario franchise to have gameplay within an isometric 3D environment, allowing for a new variety of the exploration and platforming elements reminiscent of the Super Mario series.
Super Mario RPG was critically acclaimed, and particularly praised for its humor and 3D-rendered graphics. A remake of Super Mario RPG was announced for the Nintendo Switch in June 2023 and released on November 17, 2023. It was developed in the Unity engine by ArtePiazza, which had previously worked on games in Square Enix's Dragon Quest series. It features full 3D graphics, updated character and enemy names, with Princess Toadstool being called Princess Peach to reflect her modern nomenclature and Frogfucius being renamed Frog Sage, and the option to switch between the original music and a newly arranged soundtrack by Shimomura. New battle mechanics include the ability to damage all enemies when performing perfect action commands, and powerful team-specific "triple moves" performed after building a gauge using successful action commands. Other additions include an easier difficulty setting, a bestiary to view enemies the player has encountered, and post-game content, including a sound player and more difficult boss rematches. According to the review aggregrator Metacritic, it received "generally favorable reviews", and 96% of critics recommend it on OpenCritic.

The final battle! (At least, for the main story) I've said it so many times, but I'll say it again - this remake has been absolutely amazing, and I'm psyched to see how the Thousand Year Door remake will turn out.

Congrats on making it to the finale. This has been a fun revisit, and it's nice seeing how the remake translated the original and just in general seeing this fun quirky adventure especially with so many more rpgs under my belt allowing me to appreciate many aspects that were shaped to fit within a Mario context.
Another LP in the books! Congratulations on defeating Smithy, Masae! I'm glad to have experienced this Let's Play! It was a fun experience from start to finish!
I think the reason they consider it to be "Mario's" world is because what they respect is combat, and Mario has shown himself to be the best warrior in this world.
(The real reason is obviously that it's Mario's name on the title screen, but this feels like a good in-universe explanation that makes sense for the characters.)
The option to swap between old and new is not an unlock. It's just an option you overlooked. :

What a wonderful remake this has been! Ah, that final battle brings back memories of the first time I played and struggled to figure out all of Smithy's weaknesses by trial and error.
The fact that there's that single Bowyer head in the pile of discarded Smithy heads makes me wonder if, lore-wise, there might have been a version of Smithy with Bowyer's head. Such a boss would truly have been much too powerful for game balance.

The finale was so amazing! Every cutscene with Geno is my favorite. Masae did an amazing job, it'll be fun to see how she does in the post game. I loved some of the characters in this game.
A few difference with how Masae played this time around compared to the original game. Being only limited to three active members in the party not able to switch, she had to play cautiously using HP rain when necessary and making full use of Geno's specials especially Geno Flash. Being able to switch at will however made the boss fight against Smithy 10 times faster and easier so she can switch to Peach at will and she went for more of a brute force play style with Bowser Mallow and Mario on nearly every fight. As mentioned, massive quality of life improvements made the game easier and that is thanks to the many RPGs that have followed after the original and incorporating those aspects into the remake.
When Geno puts all the star pieces back together, in the original, the wishing star was repaired but it had bandages on it whereas this version the star being multicolored and changing was completely restored. The devs during the credits as we have seen with Culex played with both original 2D graphics and 3D graphics for the end credit parade for a night time light show.
Unlike the original game, as most games have nowadays, Super Mario RPG remake has a massive post game and by RPG standards, post game is the definition of they don't play around. I wonder how Masae will handle post game by episode standards?
Massive is a stretch; AFAIK the post-game amounts to several extra boss fights and a few small scenes. But it will definitely add at least a few hours to the game, these extra fights don't mess around!
I played the Post Game and Yeah its really tough. Like it tests how well your skills are at the game and btw you get re-battle Culex in his HD form.

I like this remake so much more than the original
It'll be quite interesting to see Masae taking on the post game. She's pretty well-equipped, but, compared to the main game it definitely won't be messing around. I also hope she goes through all the logs for the bestiary too for the flavor text.

What’s really amazing is that I got the Super Mario RPG game for the Switch for Christmas from my soon-to-be brother in law, because I’ve never played the original SNES version, even though I’ve seen the videos of the original game on UA-cam. So the remake was actually new to me, and it was a lot of fun throughout the whole story from start to finish.
And I’m not gonna lie, I did cry so hard during the near end of the credits, and the ending cutscene. Mostly because the fireworks and the sad-but-happy music really hit me
I’ve had this video saved in my playlist since the day it was uploaded. I finally finished the game myself yesterday, so time to watch!

My familiarity with the original version is seeing my older cousin fight Smithy and through watching LPs of this game, including yours. I'm very curious to see the harder boss fights that I've heard of in this version!
Peach saw this factory and was unimpressed with its lack of Geneva Convention violations.
1,000 Shymore units in a month of roughly 30 days would translate to 100 Shymore every 3 days or so, so between 30 and 35 Shymores a day.
Depending on how complicated the production process is, that could be nothing, or that could be a huge ask.
Smithy ALMOST got me a Game Over. That boss fight was hard and I haven't managed to fight Culex who's optional
I beat Culex Lazy shell armor on Peach before the Axem rangers and KEPT it on her for the entire game.
Truly, it was Mario’s World all along and we just live in it

The Director having a family makes you question just how sentient Smithy's weapons are or if the Weapons World is a world of sentient weapons to begin with and it's only the way it is because of Smithy. The Weapon World as far as we know is an abyss wasteland with nothing but metal screws and scrap metal everywhere. Then you have the Manager and the Director who I think are not beings made by Smithy but actual inhabitants of said world who have been working for Smithy for over 20 years. Is it possible Smithy isn't the original ruler of the Weapon World but instead he had used his weapons and resources to turn it into his own through an iron fist and his endless army of living weapons he created. Because Smithy is nothing more than a Blacksmith and a machine, he is always power hungry and wanted to create more weapons and conquer other worlds for the sake of being known. It's even possible the people of the Weapons World weren't all weapons once but one day a young talented blacksmith developed a forging technique that made his creations sentient. Discovering this he created Smithy, a blacksmith in his own image with the dream of fame and fortune selling his weapons to the world. Both began to create weapons and gears of war for the sake of the dream, until one day the blacksmith came to realize the truth that his fame and fortune is built on the blood and despair brought about by those who uses his weapons and if he continued there would no one left to appreciate his work. It's also possible something in life had changed the Blacksmith's heart for the better. Smithy being a machine did not understand his master's change of heart and saw it as a betrayal. Thus, he killed his master and continued his perverse version of his master's dream creating tools of war who are sentient just like him and with them, he destroyed humanity in his world and began a dark history where he forever reigns supreme remembered and feared by the people he had conquered and enslaved. The people left he enslaved, their consciousness used as the sentience for his creations. Their bodies along with the dead became fuel for the furnace melted into the foundation of his factory. Those who work under him namely the Manager and the Director, they work day and night never able to tire nor need to eat because their humanity taken from them turned into machines like him. Their human lives and wills gone, molded to forever serve Smithy without question. Later by unknown means he discovered other worlds, Smithy fueled by selfish desire to be known created Exo, a sword sharp enough to cut through the boundaries of worlds allowing him to conquer those worlds and spread his weapons everywhere.
The many heads of Smithy at the weapons graveyard are the many incarnations of himself he created before he became his current version of himself. An unbreakable body created from liquid metal that can he can change at will. With every new body he creates he transfers his consciousness into the new one and throwing away the old body. That explains why his lieutenants retain their memories because their beings are in his hands. He is invincible with powerful magic, an iron wall, or a tank whenever he needs. With Smithy's demise however, his weapon graveyard was blown away with it and the perfect world of weapons he had brought to life comes down with it. Sadly even with Smithy's end, there is no hope left for that world. Everything is gone, ripped of life to fuel the Black Smith's furnace. Same can probably be the said for the many worlds Smithy had conquered before he broke into Mario's World.

@@Nightlingbolt Mario lore doesn't go deep but then you look at Paper Mario Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario. There is no real lore in Mario RPG verse but that doesn't mean you can't speculate and create some. That or basically I had this thought and I went overboard.

Smithy's a pretty cool final boss. An evil robotic blacksmith who makes sentient weapon monsters and reforges his own head mid-battle is quite creative, especially in a world like Mario's where the weapons he bases his creations on are a tad out of place. I've seen some compare the design of his first form to that of a "demonic Santa Claus", but he makes weapons instead of toys.

Lately the remakes all over have been amazing. Final Fantasy 7 is getting such a great remake series that really fleshes out things and is what they always wanted the game to be. I feel like that's the route they took here too. They mostly did the same game but updated it by changing a few things and adding a few things that really make it feel like the game they always wanted to make originally but were too limited by technology. The original game was always great with the references and little things so it really felt immersive and cute, but this one just takes it to a new level. I hope the Thousand Year Door remake is like this. Where they take the original great game and just add on to it to make it more like what it always should have been if they weren't limited.
Two things I just realized:
Those heads aren't FAILED Smithies, they're DEAD ones! Like, how fucking OLD is Smithy if he keeps making new heads meant to replace the old, dead ones?!
And Smithy's true form is LITERALLY just him without facial hair! Like, was the beard a limiter or something?!?

Unfortunately this game did not do Luigi justice he’s like 8 pixels tall…
But anyways, HOORAY! Another letsplay finished! I had a blast all the way through, now just a tip with post game bosses let’s just say, USE PEACH’S SLEEPY TIME!!! I cannot stress this enough, I had a VERY FRUSTRATING time with them until I learned that.
Even with the changes Majora’s Mask 3D made, I really liked what they did for a lot of things. Except Goht. That was an odd change. As for this remake, I’ll be giving it a go myself after finishing Super Mario Bros Wonder.
Ha ha ha, the final minions of Weapon World are laid to rest. And Smithy himself, the kind of creepy and very odd looking creator if this mess, is taken down. I wondered when Geno would return to the stars, and it was such a beautifully done cutscene too. And we even get updates from our friends in the places we went to. “Hey, gimme back my clown car!” is the line that played in my head when Bowser saw a ShyGuy riding in it. It was funny, second funniest being Booster and the vain Valentina getting married by Dodo at Marrymore.
Congrats Masae on finishing this wonderful remake, and congrats me on finally finding out why all those people wanted Geno for SSB and said Super Mario RPG was a great game. I hear from the comments section that there are a few extras to come?
