The republic was thousands of years old and the empire was only about 30 years all together in existence and the power it has was crazy
Technically the Galactic Empire is just the Sith Empire in another name, even with the rushed canon, it makes sense why it has the technology it has up until now.
The republic could've easily created a death star, and it did (under authoritarian rule) but that would go against the purpose of the jedi's existence and the republic which was meant to spread peace

Its primary goals were for the continued and unimpeded prosperity of the core worlds .The empire was widely popular due to the myriad of opportunities that it created for the people who were for most of their history exploited or marginalized .It was just that tarkin rocked the boat too much by obliterating a loyal imperial world like aldeeran but one whose royal family were rebel sympathisers .if you and your entire world are going to be erased from existence even if you are loyal then what's the point of being so in the first place

Even speaking to friends and relatives on the subject, all revile me when I speak in defence of the Empire. I cite lore, scenes and full narratives to explain my positions. And while it is fiction, it is a true test of immagination in discussing this subject with realism. People truly fail to grasp how massive the world of Star Wars is. How many hundreds of trillions of lifeforms and hundreds of thousands of star systems abound. A government, that has for the first time, in the history of the Galaxy, been capable of not just unifying this beyond titanic scale of life, but fundamentally, under the same, advanced and strong political system, would make the Galactic Empire, in equivillant to Ancient Rome of our world. Any government, that is capable of such intergalactic unity, has my support. Also, it stands to bear, that the Empire is a truly progressive if not revolutionary force. As far as I am concerned, for the first time, in the long history of the Galaxy, all lifeforms have been granted employment, stability, opportunity, equality and access to justice and protection from localised tyrannies.
the empire unified that galaxy so much that it literally promotes slavery, allows the hutt cartel to exist, allows pirates to roam the outer rim, not to mention it lasted barely 30 years because almost everyone hated the empire.
