After trial and error we all come back to bi-folds in the end. After all, if you didn't care about using cash you wouldn't carry a wallet to begin with and just rely on apple pay instead.
I purely only carry a wallet for 3 cards, everything else including ID and driver's license and 99% of everything else is on the phone apps/wallets. I haven't carried cash in more than 5 years now.
I actually just replaced my old $20 faux leather wallet I had for years with a Ridge wallet. It was a Christmas gift from my uncle who gave one to my brother and I. Even if it’s not refined looking I find it functional enough and it was a nice gift.
I feel like the video is meant for an older audience. I feel like people just don’t carry a bunch of cards and cash with them, it’s 2022. Contactless payment, crypto, just defeat the purpose of using a regular wallet.
I think that from your profile picture you are not an old person but you are not in your youth either hahaha I like the vionentus smartvn400 which I think is perfect for people your age

I purchased a fort belvedere wallet. The burgundy and teal one. I got it I think 2 or 3 years ago and it almost looks like the day I purchased it (minor scuffs only from dropping it and having a few drinks and deserts spill on it when I put it on the table when I used to date) I carry it with me every day and I am impressed with the craftsmanship. I would recommend everyone to shell out these $270 for the wallet as it will last you (from what I see for now) a lifetime, during which you will probably use 20 wallets that cost $20. You save the planet, and you save your future self money. Go for it!
I bought a leather vertical bifold wallet from a street seller in Italy and it's been my favorite wallet for over 7 years now. I did get the wallet from my favorite movie but I eventually went back to the vertical bifold. Never going back to any thing else. Vertical bifold for life.
Wallets need to stop with those plastic windows for IDs. We always have to take our IDs out to show it so that plastic window doesn't do anything. The other gripe about those plastic windows is that over period of time, they change colors. To me it makes the wallet look cheap.

FYI, for anyone looking for good leather wallets, I've had great experiences with Aspinal of London, and Clayton & Crume. Aspinal has a more European feel, while C&C are more classic American styling. Both have great leather and workmanship though. Prices currently range from around $120 to $500.
Yes! I have several different Clayton and Crume items and you can really feel the quality and difference compared to most other wallets. It’s true full grain leather. Clayton in crume is by far my favorite. Plus they are a small business in Kentucky. I like to be original and I have never met another person that has a Clayton and Crume wallet.
I have had a slim Travando wallet for sometime now. Card slots, money clip, keeps me from turning it into a filing cabinet. The design is pleasing and fits comfortably.
I actually use a women's wallet that closes with a snap. All the men's wallets I've seen and own has the card slots facing outward. The card slots in women's wallets face inward, so there's no concern for the cards to slip out without me noticing. I always keep it in my front pocket because having it in the back pocket is too uncomfortable. Plus, nobody can pickpocket it.
I did the gentleman's gazette test on the website to see which gentleman I am I am a vintage gentleman my brother is a modern gentleman in my stepfather was a classic gentleman I really do enjoy the questions but I do wish they were more simple and more easier to understand because I had trouble in understanding some of the questions and what they truly meant but I did enjoy the test
I have an antique leather “letter wallet” that is embossed with gold lettering that says “Compliments of the Hotel Cotton, Houston, Texas.” It literally is a wallet for sticking first class mail letters in. It dates from the 1920’s.
I have many cash clips, even one that folds out into a knife and a couple that are precious metal plated, yet my favorite by far is an 1884 Morgan dollar bezeled in sterling, the back being hexagon shaped
I always carry cash. Arguably a better option than a card, because you realize how much you are spending, and it feels more proper. on the other hand, bulkier
That was by far the best comprehensive breakdown of gentlemen's wallets or young men's wallets.😉 Thanks for taking the time to put this together it's always great learning something new. Takecare!
Just came back to this video...I just got a Bellroy Hide & Seek in Green Leather. Bit expensive around $100 but I've had other products from this brand and they've gained my loyalty. 😅
For an upcoming Scotland holiday I’m getting a jacket wallet since I’ll likely be wearing a jacket every day. When wearing a jacket I find them much more convenient and when wearing a kilt the jacket wallet is eminently practical
I have the Grip6 wallet. It’s a spring wallet with a full grain leather glove around the metal frame with some space for cash or an ID. I think that the one without the loop could fit more easily in the classic gentleman’s look due to that leather glove.
I bought a nice, “Silver Creek Classic” brand, vertical bi-fold cowboy / coat wallet from Cavender’s Boot City in Houston in 2017. It has ornate embossing on the genuine leather cowhide and has a nice silver Texas Longhorn badge affixed to the top front where it protrudes from the hip pocket of my Wrangler blue jeans. I paid about $100 for it and it has been a superb wallet that has served me well for nearly 8 years. However, I must say that there are times when I want to travel light and all I want to have on me is a couple of credit cards, my drivers license and my pistol permit along with a bit of pocket cash. A front pocket modern minimalist wallet like the Ekster is presently on my shopping list.
in these days of mobile phone hacking credit cards, the most important thing for me is that the wallet islined with anti RFID anti cloning material, and i carry two slimline monogramed wallets, one for notes or bills and one for cards, cash in back pants pocket or inside right jacket pocket and cards inside left
p.s. I also carry my visiting/calling cards seperately in a high polish silver card case in the small inside left jacket pocket, much more stylish to hand a calling card than fumbling with a mobile phone to give personal details
Hi Sven, great insight into wallets' history and thanks for providing gentleman's opinion. Wallets are such elegant accessories that I am really interested in their future in the context of modern ways of payments. As a leathercrafter I would like to provide some comments/recommendations/observations. Here, I disclaim that leathercrafting is my hobby and I have no intentions to support any leathercrafting businesses. By a gentlemen I always understand a man that, besides "being a man of good and courteous conduct", carries a certain "nobility" in his lifestyle. 1) Wallet is a very personal piece of accessory, selection of which very depends on deep person's taste and preferences. I strongly recommend NOT to provide a wallet as a gift unless the gifted person chooses it. High risk of the gifted person will not like it. 2) There are a few grades of leather. The best is full-grain vegetable tanned leather. Only full-grain does consists of the entire top layer ("skin") and has the most dense fabric structure, which ensures its durability; other types like top-grain, split, or genuine leather are cheap alternatives that try to look like full-grain to disguise a customer. Veg tanning lasts longer and uses natural ingrediencies (e.g., tree bark), while chrome tanning is a cheap mass production that may chemically interact with metals in your wallet. 3) Exotic leathers do not necessarily have better material properties than good old cow hide. 4) Like watches, different wallets are used for different situations. Gentlemen shall use different wallets for travelling, for visiting theatre, for a dinner in a restaurant, for every day carry, etc. You can have a "bigger" wallet in you briefcase and a "smaller" wallet for your essentials or the most frequently used items; actually, I have seen this operational model for quite a few of my customers. 5) The best way for a gentleman to have a wallet that reflects his personality is by ordering a bespoke wallet at leathercraft shop. Gentlemen can then define his needs and preferences - purpose, design, expected wallet load - these are the key questions I ask my customers. You may have a set of wallet with matching design, or a design that matches your other leather accessories (maybe made by the same leathercrafter). No limits. Leathercrafters have plenty previous projects that may inspire a gentlemen. 6) Like watches (again), by using a wallet custom made by a professional leathercrafter a gentleman shows off an accessory of an ultimate craftmanship. If the gentlemen wants to show off an expensive product, exotic leathers are not necessary. Leathercrafters have no problem to incorporate such an artistic level to a wallet by using carving, stamping and other artistic techniques that the price can be high enough so that the gentlemen is not ashamed :). 7) A gentleman takes care of his surroundings, including environment and its future. Firstly, the gentleman shall generally opt for a high quality durable timeless products so he minimizes waste production; full-grain veg tanned leather fits this perfectly as humans use leather for quite a few thousands of years. Secondly, the gentleman shall prefer leathers that are side products of other agricultural processes (e.g., cow hides, shell cordovan, goat leather) instead of using leathers of endangered species. I hope you find my comments interesting and useful.
Leather is the most stylish. I guess most don’t care for their wallet like they would their shoes.e.g polishing. What do you think of coin purses. Nothing worse than change putting holes in trouser pockets? Always had to repair holes in my partners trouser pockets..
You did not mention the front pocket “taxi” wallet. I used one in the 90’s and came back to it a couple of years ago. It is safe in the front pocket. Driver’s license and debit card fit in the top pocket. It has a coin pocket for a few quarters. I will never go back to any other wallet.
I definitely need a slimmer wallet so very informative video and right on time. By the way thanks for the previous response it's truly helpful. I have a follow up question regarding sweaters. When you wear V-necks and Cardigans with Dress shirts can they both be the same size? I already size up on Jackets so just making sure. Hope you gents enjoy your weekend!
Call me old fashioned but when travelling I carry two wallets, both Swaine Adeney. One is a coat wallet because I like the smooth non-bulky line of a coat wallet, plus a regular wallet for the back pocket when not wearing a jacket. Yes, it can be a bit awkward moving cash and cards from one to the other, but it works for me.
Especially in these times my chain wallet has kept my valuables safe several times from pick pockets, doesn't go well with long overcoats though with it bulging. My inside pocket becomes my wallet at that point and people dont mess with people with long coats.
I use an Ashland leather shell cordovan amaretto wallet that is fantastic! When I find it too thick with 6 cards and 10-15 bills, I switch to a Il bisonte billfold that is very thing, too! Great video! Very relaxing:)
A few years ago o bought a Sherman brand leather wallet for about $20. Made in China. It’s the only wallet I’ve seen that has all the features I need. Like the clear part for my license, two slots for my main cards, and enough room for a bit of cash. Plus a few other features that I like. It’s still Going strong.
The bulk and heaviness of my wallet is really bugging me. I opted for a new one the other day that looked slimmer (my previous on is worn out anyway) turns out the reason why it looked slimmer was because it's actually bigger so it's more cumbersome than the previous one, i wait to see how it gets old (and even though it was cheap, I will wear it out long enough to get used to it and to fond the right way for me to carry: my id, my debit cards, my bus subscription, my license in the future, bank notes, coins and some fidelity cards (might upgrade those to a seperate card wallet but coins are the biggest of the bulk for me and i have to constantly have a coin on my person since i'm grocery shopping once a week) I do not keep my wallet in my trousers as i find it uncomfortable so i'm glad to discover coat wallets exist Ooh i really like the idea of the cigar/pouch/makeup holder wallet I'm non binary,i knit and sew a lot and i have a huge clasp (think tiny minimalist granny purse clasp, i guess i might make a pocket purse or something)
Currently, my cell phone case has an integrated wallet and I get compliments on it. Really very nice. Probably won't last as long as my Eel skin wallet from dept store 10? yrs ago. Still looks great.
To me nothing is more elegant than a well crafted handmade veg tan wallet. Even an economy cowhide will patina really nicely and last a lifetime. The hand stitching is also way more robust than machine stitching.
You're doing a fantastic job! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
I wonder, is there a protocol describing where you should hold your wallet? I mean, what pocket, trousers, jacket, etc... What is the correct use of all your other pockets. This may seem frivolous, but after some real-life scenarios and experimenting, I've got to say, it's paramount to wallet use and/or pocket use. I just wonder if there are guidelines for this subject from which I could learn on. Thx.
My Saddleback Leather wallet is super thin, holds all my cards and various sizes of cash. Plus they are warranted for life. Basic, well constructed and real quality leather.
My brother is using wallet nd good experience nd good explanation sir many useful this wallet .I like leather wallet but I'm not using😆many peoples are used this👏 ur voice noice nd clearly😁
I own my great Grandfather’s wallet from the 1920s… it’s a great piece but after a 100 years of use it starts to fall apart. I now own a Buffalo leather wallet.
I have a black leather coffin shaped wallet with metal studs at the corners. It flips open and fastens shut with a button. It also says, Never Trust The Living on the front. Only problem is it doesnt have a coin purse or bill slot. It's a bit of a goth style, but i think its slim size and black color can fit with just about any style.
The best wallets is the normal old school compact wallet. It carries your cards, and cash without making anything visible. These small card holders expose everything you have with you, and thats not good. In the end people will return to the old school method.
These new card holders or minimal wallets aren't practical. I always return to my small compact wallet made from real leather and still is in very good shape after 10 years.
Get yourself a cross body bag, and you can get a MUCH bigger wallet. You can keep your cell phone, keys, pens, small flashlight, coins, etc. in it. And you can pick up your trousers and not have things clattering to the floor. And you don't have to worry about inadvertently washing your cell phone if you forget to remove the phone from your trousers.
I adore the Ridge wallet. It ended my search for a wallet, and if I ever lose it or wear it out, I'll get another one. I hate having stuff in my pockets, so the ridge works because I never carry more than a few cards on me, and took the money clip off, so on the off chance I have cash I use a separate money clip.
I bought my leather wallet from Mr Lentz 7 years ago and it’s just got better with age, has no stitching - it uses rivets instead. Really love it and can recommend their wallets to anyone who wants to invest in a proper piece of leather, handcrafted and honestly affordable
I use a Coach card holder. Theres 3 card pockets on one side. A clear id pocket on the other and a middle slot where you can fit folded bills. Its way thinner than any folding wallet.
My Coins are always in a little coinbag on my belt. Disliked them in my billfold wallet, because they stretched it on long terms. Now I use in combination to my coinbag a coatwallet usable even for larger papers like receipts for payment.
when i was young my dad said don't use a money clip because people will see all your cash.put away in a wallet is best. i use a smaller wallet from the Duluth Pack company.heavy leather and slots for cards and driver's license hide everything.the little cash i carry go's in a pocket.
I would never get anything with elephant leather! Thank you for the video though; your video’s provide a great amount of interesting historical information.
The biggest problem with a good wallet, is that in our country we use a lot of coins (euros is currency) so in most cases the coin part is getting broken for a lot.
Hello, I'm a huge fan of the 1910s and I was wondering if you could make a video on from what I've learnt people call it, a Open crown hat? It's a bowler with a large brim, anyway, just wondering if you could make a video on it because I'd love to learn some more about it! Thank you!
An open crown is when the top of the hat hasn't received a specific shape yet. You can find out more about the terminology in our Fedora guide, here: www.gentlemansgazette.com/fedora-hat-guide/?
Interesting that you referred to the “modern” £1 note. The £1 note was actually withdrawn back in 1988 in favour of the £1 coin. The lowest value note in the UK is the £5 note.
@@gentlemansgazette Indeed, but nobody actually uses them. I can’t remember the last time I saw a Scottish £1, and I visit Scotland regularly. But the note you showed, which was very clearly a Bank of England £1 note, was withdrawn in 1988 - which was my point.
I remember one pound notes in northern ireland when visiting family when I was younger. Legal tender yet some cashiers in england would turn their nose up at it
Concur. One of the best comments here. I laugh at users of Ridge and similar wallets. Two plates and a strap to hold folded money on the outside. Sorting through cards like a deck of playing cards.
If you gave us the sq cm of the leather needed to make your billfold, we could estimate the cost of the leather. I am sure it is well under 40 dollars with 40 dollars to assemble it. So 80 dollars tops and maybe more like 40 to 60 dollars to make these wallets. Not that your wallets are expensive when compared to a premium brand. I bought a Tod's wallet for about 15 dollars used, and it has done well for 20 years even after I accidentally submerged it in dirty water. So with a little bit of care, wallets can last for decades.
Thanks for the breakdown! 🤔 Need some advice: 🙏 I found these words 😅. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). Not sure how to use them, would appreciate help. 🙏
I need wallets and have several types. I carry my driver's license, 2 insurances cards, credit card (S) gift cards the list goes on. Then one in my pocket now has been through the laundry several times. but it aged well.
Im here after getting a 20usd leather wallet and seeing if i messed up getting a bulky sort of outdated wallet instead of a metal slim low profile wallet
In 2022 there are many websites and one large one in particular that sell artisan products. You can buy a real leather wallet , choseing not just style but material made by a real person in small quantities for a fraction of a " branded wallet ".
I've got a leather wallet, lights brown colour, made in England. My grandfather used it, my dad used it and now I'm using it. Its easily 50 years old.
Me too, my grandfather's 1975 wallet.
Meaningful heirlooms. Priceless 🔥

Not me. A minimalist wallet has worked very well for me.
Apple Pay’s get stolen all the time while with cash they can spend just as much as you have and credit cards today require double passwords and sms.

The Ford Belvedere one looks sick!!💯
Thank you, this has been quite informative.
Business cards 100%! Not essential, but it makes an impression.
We certainly think so, too! Have you seen our guide about business card cases? www.gentlemansgazette.com/business-card-case-definitive-guide/?
I tried using a cheaper leather wallet and it held up for maybe a year, planning to invest a little more for a higher quality wallet soon
Card holder is my preference wallet. Especially the one where you can insert a bit of cash in as well.
I'm looking for an American to help take a video of the unboxing, it's a wallet with an airtag slot, are you interested?
The bulk and heaviness of my wallet is really bugging me. I opted for a new one the other day that looked slimmer (my previous on is worn out anyway) turns out the reason why it looked slimmer was because it's actually bigger so it's more cumbersome than the previous one, i wait to see how it gets old (and even though it was cheap, I will wear it out long enough to get used to it and to fond the right way for me to carry: my id, my debit cards, my bus subscription, my license in the future, bank notes, coins and some fidelity cards (might upgrade those to a seperate card wallet but coins are the biggest of the bulk for me and i have to constantly have a coin on my person since i'm grocery shopping once a week)
I do not keep my wallet in my trousers as i find it uncomfortable so i'm glad to discover coat wallets exist
Ooh i really like the idea of the cigar/pouch/makeup holder wallet
I'm non binary,i knit and sew a lot and i have a huge clasp (think tiny minimalist granny purse clasp, i guess i might make a pocket purse or something)
Currently, my cell phone case has an integrated wallet and I get compliments on it. Really very nice. Probably won't last as long as my Eel skin wallet from dept store 10? yrs ago. Still looks great.
The pockets for credit-cards MUST face the fold and not 'up' where a worn wallet will spill the contents.
I'm looking for an American to help take a video of the unboxing, it's a wallet with an airtag slot, are you interested?
To me nothing is more elegant than a well crafted handmade veg tan wallet. Even an economy cowhide will patina really nicely and last a lifetime. The hand stitching is also way more robust than machine stitching.
You're doing a fantastic job! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
I got for chrtmas the leather billfold.
Before, I had the cheapest wallet that can be, so it is a great upgrade
I like a simple, practical and low profile wallet.
Nice. I just ordered a new wallet. I hope it meets the standard.
I also make wallets, but they are made of carbon fiber. I am testing them now, and I can give you one for free. Contact me if you are interested
What if the wallet's inside is showing glue that is not fixed properly, what to do. Is that ok for buying??
Great video guys. I wouldn’t look to spend more than £100 on a wallet as I don’t have need to use it everyday.
I own my great Grandfather’s wallet from the 1920s… it’s a great piece but after a 100 years of use it starts to fall apart. I now own a Buffalo leather wallet.
I own a brown bear leather wallet
And you don't have to worry about inadvertently washing your cell phone if you forget to remove the phone from your trousers.
quite right, a wallet is a must, and a backup wallet (stuffed with expired cards), to give to the muggers who stand-and-deliver the unwary
Where are you walking to where you need to carry two wallets all the time?
I cant find a single wallet that feels premium, durable, minimal for coins, cash and cards and also budget friendly
Satchel and Paige Money Clip is Great 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm looking for an American to help take a video of the unboxing, it's a wallet with an airtag slot, are you interested?
I was hoping you guys would touch on brands like Ettinger.
Satchel & Page, absolutely fantastic
I adore the Ridge wallet. It ended my search for a wallet, and if I ever lose it or wear it out, I'll get another one. I hate having stuff in my pockets, so the ridge works because I never carry more than a few cards on me, and took the money clip off, so on the off chance I have cash I use a separate money clip.
Burgundy is a great color for a wallet.
I bought my leather wallet from Mr Lentz 7 years ago and it’s just got better with age, has no stitching - it uses rivets instead.
Really love it and can recommend their wallets to anyone who wants to invest in a proper piece of leather, handcrafted and honestly affordable
Ashland Leather is all you need. I have several from them.
What's the sweater? Colhays?
I would never get anything with elephant leather! Thank you for the video though; your video’s provide a great amount of interesting historical information.
The biggest problem with a good wallet, is that in our country we use a lot of coins (euros is currency) so in most cases the coin part is getting broken for a lot.
In France people who are in man style say that coins should go into your pocket, while the wallet is for everything else.
Thank you sir ❤️
I carry some of my money in my bifold wallet and the rest is inside my case phone so it won't overstuffed, I think it's a neat trick
I have a montblanc wallet and have been carrying it for 5 years.
Interesting that you referred to the “modern” £1 note. The £1 note was actually withdrawn back in 1988 in favour of the £1 coin. The lowest value note in the UK is the £5 note.
The £1 note does look nice tho, I wouldn't mind flipping off coins and going full on with notes. :)
@@ninetynein6853 Did look nice, it hasn’t existed for 34 years and won’t be coming back.
Although it's not being made anymore, the £1 note is still in circulation in Scotland
Legal tender yet some cashiers in england would turn their nose up at it
A gentleman washes then details his own car. No car wash gift cards!
I still have a wallet gifted to me BEFORE Poland changed (1988), pre Cold War. Quite nice.
Excellent video
I still carry cash! So a nice slim leather wallet. Is great for me
Shell cordovan leather is the best, highly recommend the brand ashland leather who use horween leather.
Concur. One of the best comments here. I laugh at users of Ridge and similar wallets. Two plates and a strap to hold folded money on the outside. Sorting through cards like a deck of playing cards.
Is the Louis Vuitton damier bifold mens wallet a good wallet ?
I love my rfid blocking trigger wallet. I still even have a magic wallet from the 90s or early 2000s
I’ve had a Ridge wallet for 4 years. Gpt replacement parts free of charge. Small and compact, enough space for a few cards and some cash. 10/10
I need wallets and have several types. I carry my driver's license, 2 insurances cards, credit card (S) gift cards the list goes on.
Then one in my pocket now has been through the laundry several times. but it aged well.
The message I want to send is: "I can afford a top notch wallet, but I choose not to buy one". Just kidding. Great guide.
Mont Blanc credit card holder is perfectly sufficuent for my needs and looks and feels nice.
Im here after getting a 20usd leather wallet and seeing if i messed up getting a bulky sort of outdated wallet instead of a metal slim low profile wallet
I am 16 tho
In 2022 there are many websites and one large one in particular that sell artisan products. You can buy a real leather wallet , choseing not just style but material made by a real person in small quantities for a fraction of a " branded wallet ".
Your so rite about wallets
Only use cardholder or pay with my phone. Haven’t used cash in many years.
I've been concerned with RFID signal intervention and now keep my cards in a metal cigarette case, along with my car key fob.
