    I used to work at Patagonia, The Nano Air is the favorite amongst the employees. Walking around the office in the winter you’ll see them everywhere lol.

      How does it compare to the better Sweater in sizing? I have large for better sweater but unsure with Nano air as I have a little beer belly 😅
      Would you recommend going one size larger because it’s slim fit?

    • @deeez3606
      @deeez3606 Рік тому +2

      @@Atran11 it depends on how that Better sweater fits. If it’s snug at all I would recommend sizing up for the nano air. Also depends on how you want to wear the nano air though, if you want a true mid layer, you might appreciate the more trim fit, if you are looking at wearing it as a stand alone piece, I would go with the larger size.

    Bro I think your reviews are better than channels w/ 100x more subscribers. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel.
    Also, I was getting FOMO w/ the patagonia sales at REI, but I think I'll wait and buy an arcteryx midlayer instead!

    Both of these are the newer versions of their jackets. I owned both for 4-6 years. The nano-air started it all and it was pretty awesome for the first year or so. I don't even rub it up against rocks that much, it was mostly for running, skiing and hiking. The insulation really packed down and the fabric frayed under the armpit, beltline, and shoulder. Pretty much at the spots where anything is rubbing up against it. It's definitely a shadow of its former self. I don't wear it anymore because it's not a warm as it used to be. It used to be very breathable on its own and acts like a puffer under a shell.
    The Proton LT has held up much better. Some insulation packed down near the shoulder, and some fabric threads were pulled by jagged ski edges, but overall, it functions pretty similar to day one. Unless you're running or cross country skiing, the proton is your jacket. Yes, that hood is pretty amazing. It baggy when you want it to be and it cinches down to a scuba hood when you need it to.
    I did some reading to see the difference between the old and new Proton LT. The old one uses a 40D fabric, the new one use 20D, I am not sure if the fabric has been improved. They change the type of insulation they used, but overall, not much has changed. The nano-air has changed a lot. I thought the old fabric was nylon, but the new fabric is polyester for sure. The insulation has been swapped from their proprietary full-range to Thermolite. The fit has slim down quite a bit. It's almost like a new jacket. It looks like Patagonia made changes to address the issue I had with the jacket. My experience with Thermolite has not been great so it'll be interesting to see what people's experiences are.
    I've tried many active insulations over the years and I have to say that they are a big improvement over the hybrid construction of softshell and fleece of yesteryear.

      I also got ole versions of them both. The new Proton LT has the same outer fabric as Proton FL, which has been good so far. The old fabric seems overkill and affects the breathability too.
      Overall I would opt for the new Proton LT if in need of an upgrade. The old Nano Air is still useful and the vreathability remains superior though. The lightest Proton FL is even more technical though, but not as warm as LT or Nano.

    • @thdjjfsfh
      @thdjjfsfh 2 роки тому

      @@Neonomide Totally agree. I am not in need of an upgrade, but my size has shrunk since the gym shutdown. The had the Proton FL for almost a year now, it has since replaced my Atom SL. I'll probably upgrade while I go down a size.
      The Proton FL can practically be used year-round. With a fleece underneath it can pretty much replace the Proton LT. I honestly don't use my Nano-air anymore.

      Sorry, I understand it's been a while since this comment was posted but, I'm curious about one of your statements: '(...) Unless you're running or cross country skiing, the proton is your jacket'. I'm looking for a insulation layer for xc skiing, and I was thinking about the Atom. Yet, I also heard about these two options, and I decided to check their details. Now, your comment caught my attention and I wonder if you have any recommendation/experience with insulation layers for xc skiing? Thanks

    • @thdjjfsfh
      @thdjjfsfh 2 роки тому

      The most breathable jacket with a good amount of insulation is the nano-air, but between the atom LT and Proton LT, the Proton is more breathable.
      If it's warmer than -7c, I wear the atom SL or Proton FL.

    Good review!
    Note about the heat transfer vs embroidered logo, it's because of the material of the jackets. The stretch pocket will hold a heat transfer for longer than an embroidery, which will also feel weird when your hand is in the pocket. In general, Synthetically insulated jackets like the Atom and Proton will use heat transfers because the insulating layer will move independently from the face fabric and warp/damage the jacket over time. A heat transfer stays on for almost as long, but won't damage the jacket. This is not an issue with down insulation, which is why a jacket like the Cerium Lt has an embroidery. Hope that helps explain it 😉

    i think the major con for Arc'teryx is durability, it cost a ton, and their warranty stinks. Having had many arc'teryx pieces simply disintegrate in the wash, I'm loathed to ever buy arc'teryx again. I have 20+yr old TNF and Patagucci that have never fallen apart at a glue seamed like arc'teryx. Granted this may be a cheap fabric glue issue arc'teryx uses, since all the issues are with glued seams and pockets. the last thing I care about is style when I'm looking for an active midlayer. Form over function is not a good recipe for actual active use. not sure you actually compare the active part, which is the entire purpose of these active midlayers. I have yet to actually see anyone do an abrasion test against these fabrics to hold up all the marketing claims people just parrot. Rub some sandpaper on each of those jackets and see how many passes they can withstand. Do an actual performance test. The negative of the nano-air is the cuffs or lack there of. I prefer the stretch knit cuffs of the proton lt or an elasticized cuff over the patagucci nano-air open cuff.

    Neither jacket has a hood for cold weather protection. Neither hood covers the nose for two highly useful conditions. When the nose is covered by a properly designed hood the warm, humid air exiting the nose warms the face. A covered nose area provides for goggles to protect from penetrating wind, cold wind and wind driven rain and snow. So neither jacket provides full face protection for varying weather conditions.
