Everyone knew that "no means no"- people went to jail for rape back then- guys could get in serious trouble if they were accused of harassing girls, let alone any sort of violence. It’s still a problem that they use a marginalized person to teach a white man some lesson that he should have done actual research on and then immediately kill him off. This is a regular trope and it paints marginalized people as a vehicle for the morality of white people. The headdress was offensive. At no point did Zack explain the cultural significance of his clothing and is celebrated for dressing the part when the Native American he learned from doesn’t dress like that. Just as a Native American man is representing modern Native people, the choice to dress in supposedly “traditional” clothing just creates some sort of dichotomy between Native Americans and modernity

It was a different time. Even back in the 80's when I was a little kid I knew that some of the things I saw on sitcoms was inappropriate, but most of it was done with humor, and most people did not get offended so easily like society does today. Saved By The Bell came out when I was about to start middle school and was one of my favorite sitcoms at that time. I even watched the spinoff show Saved By The Bell The College years even though it was not as good and it did not have the whole cast . I did not like Saved By The Bell The New Generation at all, and my tastes in sitcoms had changed also. I also did not like the very first season when they were in middle school. I know that it was originally called Good Morning Miss Bliss , but when they played reruns it was part of the original Saved By The Bell series.

"Saved by the Bell" has been a target over the years for its portrayals of various subjects. Some of the criticism misses the fact that "Saved by the Bell" was intended to be absurd and a little bizarre, essentially a parody of after school specials. Nonetheless, the reason the show gets criticism even today is because it did leave a long-lasting impression on kids, pre-teens, 'tweens, and teens from the 90s and created unrealistic expectations about high school. Probably to an extent, people look back on "Saved by the Bell" and think it explains why they had false ideas about what high school is or supposed to be and how that undermined their life and future. I remember "Saved by the Bell" as being the show that came on after Saturday morning cartoons--a show I didn't like but my older sister did, while kids at school thought that watching "Saved by the Bell" meant they were more mature or cooler than other kids. I did not watch "Saved by the Bell" until I was in 9th and 10th grade because I was in independent studies and thought the show gave me insight into high school because it is a show that influenced perceptions of high school and what high school is supposed to be. This list by MsMojo mostly focused on Zack and Screech being creeps, Kelly being submissive, and Mr. Belding being out of place in the cast of characters--entirely sidestepping any criticism towards their own crush on Slater. I have not watched the show in years so I can't remember every last scene but I'm sure that Slater did something that would not work today. This is why I think the biggest omission on this list is the SAT episode--where Zack gets a 1500 and Screech and Jessie get relatively low scores of 1200, low for students competing for valedictorian and with dreams of Ivy League schools. Instead, the slacker who blows off class, gets in trouble, and whose mischief makes him Most Likely to Be a Sociopath thinks he can go to any school he wants. The "moral" being: be a slacker and maybe you'll still win and get to cash in on an SAT score like the cool kid did rather than study, just to be middle of the pack like the awkward guy or bitchy girl did. I would have also added Cut Day to the list because the episode celebrates the idea of cutting class ... when you really think about it, nearly every episode of "Saved by the Bell" is inappropriate today and was even back then, the only episodes that aren't cringe-inducing are when they work for the beach resort or travel to Hawaii. The point of the show was to be a vehicle for producers and directors to hook up with Elizabeth Berkley, Tiffany Thiessen, or Lark Voorhies--actresses in their 20s pretending to be underage girls. This would explain why Berkley went on to "Showgirls" and Dustin Diamond went on to be in porn. Like I said, I did not watch "Saved by the Bell" as a kid ... instead, I once heard Conan O'Brien say he was "obsessed" with the show when he was in his twenties, so I wrote an extremely long letter to quote him and say, "maybe I won't stalk you, you'll stalk me" (I think I was taking the same caffeine pills that Jessie was). Because ultimately, that is the underlying message of "Saved by the Bell," it was merely a show cobbled together as an afterthought for Saturday mornings that became a hit with middle and high school students but the reason it was created was as a way for directors and producers to audition actresses and get laid, but covering their tracks by making episodes for the feminist Jessie, the Black girl getting creepy attention from an awkward white guy with curly hair, or in having it's very flawed hero, Zack, learn sensitivity lessons the hard way but still trying to be above it all.

I think you also could have mentioned the fact that Screech being bullied and put down by people for being a "nerd" would not be acceptable today, because persecuting someone for being "different" is not okay. Later on, there were characters like Steve Urkel and Sheldon Cooper who made being brainy and nerdy kind of "cool", but it was never so for Screech.

@@badgyrl310 that’s partly true. However, Steve would never allow himself to be manipulated by anyone just to gain popularity, the way Screech was manipulated by Zack. And Steve would sometimes stand up to Laura when she was gratuitously rude to him. Screech was pretty much treated like a doormat throughout high school.
