and a student (although they were both over age) plus in an episode in season 7 that i watched today, he admitted to changing a persons grade because the student said they were in love with him
I am a lesbian and I first watched Friends this year and never got offended by any of the lesbian jokes. Tbh I often hate modern shows for making lgbtq people seem like those perfect beings (either funny, smart, beautiful, always getting in a perfect relationship after one date etc.), because they are to afraid to offend someone. Susan and Carol were great characters, because "being a lesbian" never was their main "character trait" and the way the main friend group made their jokes was not mean spirited and made them more real (my friends make lesbian jokes all the time because they know I enjoy them as well and that it's just a joke and that's what really good friends do: they are comfortable enough to joke around with each other just like we do straight jokes as well).
Exactly! People nowadays just blow everything out of proportion. Not everything is offensive, it's only offensive if you say it with an offensive tone, if it's clear that it's a joke, everything's cool.
@@ethemyurdakulu8582 no she did not tell him that she loved him she just went their. Afterwards when their marriage had come to an end she told him that she still loved him. But she did not expect anything from him.
I love this show, and the fact that it was made years ago with problematic issues is A REAL THING, but that does NOT mean that you can't enjoy the show. it's only important to acknowledge the problems and know that nowadays they'd be unacceptable. you can still laugh at the jokes.
A rebuttal for each point: 10. Joey and Chandler do jump up and freak out about breastfeeding, but they are shown to be in the wrong in this situation. Carol even allows them to ask questions to get a better understanding of why it is so normal. 9. I think this joke was less about mocking Fun Bobby's recovery, but more about the situational irony that Monica needs to drink to tolerate his boring conversations. This isn't the most tasteful joke but it was just that - a joke. Plus Bobby knows what's best for him when he leaves Monica in the end because of the need to take care of himself - that shows a lot of bravery for that kind of character. 8. Although Ross is jealous and possessive, so is Rachel. She gets upset when Ross takes Ben to a play date with another child, and her mother happens to be a stripper. And she also attempts to ruin Ross' relationships. I'm not saying this behaviour is okay, but you can't blame it all on Ross here. Also, similar to the breastfeeding point, they are shown to be in the wrong in these situations, getting them into trouble for acting this way. It's not like the show glorifies this behaviour. 7. Regarding the NBC executive, who cares. They wrote this into the show to tell a story for the episode, and just because this one guy thought she was a "whore" doesn't mean audiences did. And regarding the number of guys Monica has slept with, she is embarrassed because she thinks the number is too large, but Richard is supportive to her even when she eventually tells him. It is also implied that Richard would not care about a large number because of his love for her. That episode actually seems to be arguing against "slut-shaming" by telling Monica the number of guys she's been with doesn't matter. Oh, and the Joey thing, that's his character. And he's pretty much the only one that thinks he's cool for sleeping with so many women, the other's don't praise him for it. 6. While Phoebe does underplay the events that happened, that's just how she saw the events. You can't really blame the assault victim for how they recall the events, she can say that "he made a move on me" but it doesn't mean it's not a sexual assault. They also do treat the subject seriously, not making it into a joke. 5. Come on! They don't make fun of Carol and Susan for being lesbians, they make fun of Ross for being too stupid to not understand that his wife is a lesbian. They actually treat the couple in a very respectful way, and even have one of the nicest episodes surrounding the couple. "The One With the Lesbian Wedding" shows that Ross has grown away from hating Susan for causing his split with Carol and he finally accepts that they truly do love each other. 4. This is another example of a character being in the wrong for what they do. Ross tries to get Ben to play with the G. I. Joe instead of his Barbie and multiple characters commented how pathetic it is. Once again, it's not promoting this behaviour. And concerning the Manny (Male-Nanny), this characteristic of Ross' shines through in this episode, and also casts him as wrong. But many characters love the male nanny, including the "manliest" friend Joey. You can put this up to Joey's childlike nature, but he accepts the Nanny with open arms and even hires him to teach him stuff after he is fired by Ross. 3. While I do think some of the jokes directed towards gays aren't as tasteful as one would hope, the point about the male's not wanting to show affection towards each other are once again, part of their characters. Every guy on this show wants to be a stereotypical manly man but most times they don't do conform because of their love for each other. Joey and Chandler constantly hug it out, and while they do comment about "hugging too much" they do it anyway in later episodes because they are such good friends. And the one with the Ross and Joey nap time thing, they kept doing it because they liked napping with each other. 2. This is probably the one argument I don't have a huge rebuttal for because most of the time the jokes about Monica's past weight were pretty mean spirited. Personally I thought the constant food jokes associated with the past episodes got pretty stale and annoying. But one thing I thought they did very well was showing that Chandler would love Monica even if she weighed the same. The "what if" episode is one of my top 5 favourites, mainly because of this reason. This episode shows that Monica and Chandler are truly meant to be because despite Chandler's picky attitude toward women, and overweight woman often, he still ends up with her. 1. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Chandler's dad was just a Drag Queen? Either way, most of Chandler's hatred toward his father stems from him being a terrible father, not from him being a drag queen. While there are hints that Chandler doesn't approve of who his father is, in the episode where he invites his father to his wedding, we see that Chandler has finally accepted his father for who he is, which is a pretty progressive thing for this kind of show to do. This show was made in a different time, but most of these "issues were handled with a ton of respect. Even if some of them are slightly offensive, it was a comedy show. Personally I think it is okay to joke about anything as long as it isn't directed at a single person, but this show barely even does that. If we keep looking into the past to find things that wouldn't be acceptable by today's standards, we're just gonna keep finding things we don't like. If you search for things that are wrong, you're gonna find them, so just sit back and enjoy life and stop trying to ruin the good things we already have. Like sandwiches!
About number 2. I never thought jokes about Monica being fat was mean spirited. That is normal teasing about looks between friends. The same we could say about mocking Ross's haircut. In the circle of friends, calling fat people fat is not mean, it's just the truth. Monica knew she was overweight and they just joked about that, like they joke about everything else. If you can't joke around your best friends, where can you? Fat Monica was still very accepted, so there was no mean spirited fat-shaming
@mcrGD11 so what if he jokes about that? How is this degrading and offensive for Italian people? It doesn't glorifies it in any way. Ross was acting like a jealous idiot and jealousy was the cause of that bad behavior. He didn't act like that cause he hates Italians. Why everything must offend someone? Phoebe was also making fun of british accent, but in total innocent carefree way. Why can't we joke about different accents, about different nations, about different cultures,... we are different and we acknowledge that with healthy humour. Why everything must be taken as mean spirited racist joke? Political correctness is really the biggest enemy of comedy.
Indeed. The characters are supposed to be flawed and their flaws are played for laughs. Sadly the modern press is lazy and when a few thousands SJW nutters on twitter post OUTRAGW the press takes this as the opinion of all fo society like all the tens of millions who watched friends agree.
@Andrew Smith Good for you. I can't name anyone with less of a life than you. Also almost everyone would disagree that Friends isn't in the top 50 :) I also hope your friend doesn't see you posting obnoxious bullshit like this, I'd hate for you to lose him/her/zim/zam.

In the context of the show, it's portrayed as frowned upon ("hired yourself a little treat did you?"?), So I don't think it could've made the list. I agree that some of these jokes would just be the target of trigger-happy Twitter asshats today, and were but mildly crass at the time. Others I think... (the guys' OTT "homophobia" was I think the butt of the joke, to be laughed at, not with. Same with Ross ans the GI Joes (which pales in comparison to how progressive a storyline about a gay couple and a straight father caught up in it was at the time, more broadly). The only ones I'd agree with are volume of fat jokes, but those are the price we paid for that body suit dance...
That was a situation where a woman objectified a man.... no one cares about that. I also found it interesting that they had phoebe being assaulted on the list but no mention of when chandler was assaulted by joeys tailor. They made quite a few jokes about it in the episode.
Ryan Courtright being gay was frowned upon then. It’s better now but still isn’t great. The “Me Too” movement didn’t happen until 2011. Neither of them would fly today but it was risky to put it in then (for Joey).
Imagine a show where they aren’t allowed to offensive or push the boundaries at all The show would literally entail all the characters sitting on a couch in silence
the show is fine, it's still funny, idk why people would get offended over a almost 30 year old show. back then comedy was more free, but now it's controlling. I found comedies in this generation are not even funny as Friends or Seinfeld, my favorites.
Yes those real people who all look like models, live in what would be million dollar apartments, encounter unrealistic situations and never see any minorities.
When Ross tried to make Ben play with "boy" toys, it was said in the show that it was wrong he was doing it and many characters said he was pathetic for acting like that. When Chandler and Joey were freaked out by the breast feeding they were called out on it to on the show. The jokes weren't offensive the jokes were jokes.
And in the end of the episode Monica destroys him by bringing up how he dressed up as a woman and sang a tea song as a kid and had no right to act upset by Ben playing with a doll. He ran into the bathroom in embarrassment as Monica sang the song to tease him.
I feel like the scene with Joy's tailor should have been a mention. The creepy old guy not only took advantage of Chandler but had done the same thing to Joey since he was 15, and poor Joey believed that was how it was done
every TV show made so many offensive jokes in the 90s, am I right? However (weirdly enough) if they were to make an offensive homeschooled joke or an offensive autism joke, I’d be livid!!!
Joan Crawley I have compassion for others, but our society should not expect everyone to change what they deem funny just bc a small group of people chooses to be offended.
"This is the most natural, beautiful thing in the world" "Yeah we know, but there's a baby sucking on it" One of the funniest things I've heard all day.
@@TheySt0leMyUserName exactly they just Showed it humourously. That's all. I mean Everyone gets a Little Uncomfortable seeing a Mother Breastfeed her Baby. It's an Intimate bond Between the Child and the Mother and You are just invading their Privacy by Looking at it, that's what is discomforting about it, not the fact that the mother is Breastfeeding her child.
When George Carlin died, I think people lost the ability to understand jokes. Sitcoms exaggerate things to make jokes. Plus yes, it does take some adjusting to when someone breastfeeds. Unless you’re around it a lot, it’s a little surprising. Joey and Chandler are a little shocked, Ross isn’t.
I completely agree with you. Friends has a big part in how society sees LGBTQ+ people : yet they made fun of this topic to some extent, but never in a mean way. In my opinion the authors managed to give visibility to the community by making fools out of the main characters of the show so that the viewer would say "hey, in fact these people are not freaks" to themselves.
Arun G he was indeed terrible as a father, chandler even stated that once he saw his parents in an orgy when he was 9!! And in the end he still accepted his dad. That is way too progressive even for today
so was i, and honestly i found none of these jokes offensive. Friends is an iconic show and the monica jokes are really funny despite what people say 😂
Yeah, the double standard thing is American TV shows still thinks you should be 'fit' otherwise you are ugly. "America, where dreams come true and you can be who you wanna be" More like where you're dreams gets shattered when you talk to a person in California who shames you for not being transgender, Gay or fat.
@@LovelyLies16 I bet he laughed at them because he found them relatable, Like he was laughing at himself. Which is a thing Americans has forgot how to do.
Even then, then joke was mostly about their reactions. Like Chandler and Joey reacted like kids to Carol breastfeeding, the joke wasn't her, it was them. The joke was Ross reacting like a crazy person trying to take his son's Barbie. I don't remember Chandlers father ever being a joke, it was more a part of Chandler that we got to see and yes he was sometimes uncomfortable about it, but even now a days if you started your life with a male father married to your female mother and had to deal with him coming out and transitioning to life as a woman, that might be hard. I thought it was more his insecurity about what others think that was part of those episodes, and especially back then I can see how he was a relatable character.
MommyOfZoeAndLiam you get it! In the barbie case, everybody but ross thought his reaction was stupid, friends is actually very inclusive and progressive even by today standards. It has a lesbian wedding wich everybody is okay with, a gay couple rising a child treated in a very respectful way, a transgender woman who is an accepted and successful member of society. If people manage to get offended by friends, they need therapy
The reason white people love Friends is because they are racist. This show hardly ever has people of color. White people love watching white people. It’s a form of white supremacy
I'm so happy we can still stream these older shows. Modern day ones are so riddled with political correctness & trying to be "inclusive" that they're just not fun to watch now. I wish there were some "Non PC" shows these days.
You have to remember that they sometimes use those jokes to show how immature they are.. I mean, chandler once almost referenced to an old ex of his as fat, and Monica made him call her and apologize. Joey once got a girl roommate, and he was doing "girly" stuff, but at the end of the episode, he was okay with it. Chandler found out a lot of his friends and work buddies thought he was gay, and his problem was that one of them said a guy was out of his league. So yeah, they make some outdated jokes that seem offensive nowadays, but when you look at the big picture, they did a lot of good stuff in that show too (you don't have to be married to have a baby, adoption is just as good as having kids through pregnancy, they addressed Monica and Chandler's jealousy in one episode and they never did it again, etc, etc...) so they never pretended that the group were good people. Basically, you should've mentioned how they turned some stuff around, or reminded viewers that the show wasn't inherently bad. (also, with Ross/Rachel's unhealthy relationship, came great examples of healthy relationships, with Monica/Chandler and Pheobe/Mike)
Very true! And I think the show was progressive for all of the things featured in the video BECAUSE they addressed the issues and made fun of it. I thought it super progressive to address breastfeeding, a lesbian family, infertility and adoption, boys playing with girls toys, etc. They called these things out and used the goofiness of the characters to show how stupid those opposing attitudes actually were. The fat shaming was maybe the one that did fit on the list.
And it's never all of them having a certain opinion, e.g. only Ross himself felt weird about Ben playing with the doll and the others didn't really understand what his deal was and Joey loved the male nanny that Ross and Rachel hired. It was always one character that stood out and, in contrast to the other characters, behaved immaturely.
Well the thing about it is the series are supposed to be about how average people would react in these situations, but it also has to go with their already established characters. So yea they can be childish and stuff sometimes but this series starts off when most of their characters are early to mid 20s and end in their 30s, so the show is showing how they are learning to grow up and basically learn to accept things or move on from things in life in a comedic way.
I never was weirded out about Chandler and Joey being weird about the breastfeeding, I think that many people not just men find that a bit uncomfortable. As Ross was trying to be positive about it, I think it was okay.
I’m a woman and I think it feels uncomfortable setting in a room with a lady who’s breastfeeding… but of course there are cultural differences. I’m Arab and it is completely unacceptable in our culture to breastfeed in public..
But Ross' behaviour isn't portrayed as a good thing, so why would that be a problem? And the whole lesbian thing as well as the masculinity problems are always played in a way that makes it clear, that the opinions the characters have are ridiculous, which is why they're a joke.
It's the "Archie Bunker" effect. TV writers now worry that unless they portray a bigoted character as evil and not just laughable, viewers will laugh WITH the character rather than AT him and sympathize with his antisocial views.
The problem with Ross character is not that he acts possessive and jealous towards his girlfriend, because I agree that Rachel acts the same way in a lot of situations. The real issue here is the acceptance of his behavior towards women in general. He believes in the conservative role of men and women and thinks it's okay for him to shame women for being 'too forward' in pursuing guys they find attractive, when men act the same way all the time. The show in general jokes about feminism and equality of men and women instead of addressing this as an issue, which results in the encouragement of behavior like Ross' towards women. In this context, Rachel serves as a good example as a woman Ross thinks of as inferior to him.
Yes! So fucking sick of hearing that. And it is possible to have not offensive jokes about homosexuality, but I personally don’t think this show achieves that often.
But in almost all of these the joke was "Can you believe that they think like that?" and there was always a counter part to make them look dumb for having dated views on the subject...
Fer Aguilar exactly! Bc we all have our weird quirks and views about life that people can laugh at, that’s why it’s a comedy show about young adults learning about themselves!
Right? I feel like in a way, the writers were more so condemning the problematic stuff rather than supporting them - which is opposite of what this video is trying to lead us to believe.
I think it was more of the lesbian think and how Joey fetishized lesbians and also how if a man in the show did anything seen as feminine they’d have to do something masculine
For the record, these jokes might get the show canceled in today's day in age, but to say they "would not work" might not be accurate. Considering how immensely popular the show STILL is today, I'd say that most people still find the jokes (and show overall) entertaining.
This is what Jennifer Aniston was talking about a few days ago: it's hard to do comedy now a days because our generation takes ALL to serious and as offensive. Jennifer: “There's a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of 'Friends' and find them offensive,” Aniston said. “There were things that were never intentional and others… well, we should have thought it through - but I don't think there was a sensitivity like there is now.” ---- And she is RIGHT!!
I love this show, and the fact that it was made years ago with problematic issues is A REAL THING, but that does NOT mean that you can't enjoy the show. it's only important to acknowledge the problems and know that nowadays they'd be unacceptable. you can still laugh at the jokes.
"This feels dated by today's standards". No shit Sherlock, these were made almost 20 - 25 years ago. These jokes didn't make me cringe.... This analysis did.
The most ridiculous criticism about Ross character is that he is possesive and more jealous When Rachel ruins his life for more than 6 season because she can't see Ross with another girl When Ross tries his best to move on because it will make Rachel happy And every one criticize ross
I absolutely love friends, and sometimes people need to get that this show was made in the 90's, so ofc so many things were different and whatever, but jokes are jokes! let's just enjoy this masterpiece of a show
I'm fat and I was never offended by the Monica fat jokes I laughed at them, never found anything in friends or any other show offensive cause you know they are fake not real, they are not made to take so seriously. if someone takes a comedy show that serious then they need to turn off the tv and go outside, get some fresh air, you'll feel better.
Saphira Mystique right! I'm bi but the lgbt jokes in the show arent offensive. It's almost like they're mocking social norms. Friends is a 90s show and they're brave enough to put a lesbian couple in it and talk about gender roles. People need to chill.
Saphira Mystique Same. I was maybe annyoed if monica was in her fatsuit and everything she talked about was food because that was just one joke iver and over and over but that's just not funny and not offending
I did kinda feel that an overweight person is ridiculous and it really wasn't pleasant during my teenage.. And I wasn't even a big girl,it was more or less an extra 20 pound ass :P, which I've lost later on. And the two of the girls are too skinny.. Like, Monica had to keep on being thin so she could date chandler who gained pound after pound each season?? Also Joy could be spot with round chicks and a full gut in many occasions.. Maybe I was sensitive with the body image stuff due to my personal sensitivity and that's why I don't like this aspect of friends at all!
MsMinoula I can see where you're coming from, my weight gain started in my teens, mostly caused by depression medication, wasn't really a big eater, and I've never been able to drop the weight no matter what I do, I hate being big, though I'm not to the point where I'm considered obese I don't think, I just never let jokes on TV bother me, me its when actual people make fun of me.
Right.. to me it isn't the jokes per se, it was mostly the general ridicule of the character that bothered me.. but it's nice to hear other people's perspectives.
Ross: I need a couch that says "Kids welcome here" and that also says "Come here to me." Rachel: You say that too kids? Ross: No! The "Come here to me" is for the ladies. Rachel: It's a nice couch, it's not a magic couch.
and that’s why this show was not dull... the important thing is not the jokes in show but how it handled the message at the end. And they were pretty open minded in that sense
Except Chandler's dad isn't transgender. He's gay and dressed in drag and did drag shows. Either way, put yourself in Chandler's shoes. It would be hard on not only him but his mom as well coming to terms with this. Just like it was hard for Ross to accept that his ex-wife and first love is a lesbian and left him for a woman. It was groundbreaking in that it talked about these issues, shows character flaws and growth (Monica and Richard ultimately separated because of the issue of having kids, not her number..Monica and Chandler also worked through her taking issue with him poking fun about weight in the past and present) and they also had a lesbian couple and a drag queen character on the show, which was huge in the 90s. Considering when Ellen's character came out on her sitcom and it wasn't received well, you have to see how big of a sea it was for them to start their show off with a lesbian couple right off the bat. This is what made their characters relatable. They had issues like everyone else. This is just a testament to how extremely sensitive and quick to react to stupid shit this generation is. It says something when the jokes still hold up today and can make us laugh. Ross' treatment of women may also stem from the fact that his and Monica's parents treated him like the golden child and clearly preferred him over Monica. Then the situation with Carol as well. Doesn't make it right and it's a flaw that's never resolved, but really...what would Ross be if he didn't have those flaws?
Of course Chandler's dad is transgender, she's played by Kathleen Turner for Christ's sake. If Chandler's dad was a gay male drag queen, they would have cast a man in the role and done him up in drag. Besides, gay men have done drag along side transgender drag performers since gay culture became a thing so being a headliner in Vegas doesn't make a difference regarding Chandler's dad's gender identity. I completely get that the 90's was a different time, before political correctness, but as a gay guy, the storyline between Ross and Ben, for example, regarding the Barbie is incredibly offensive to me, because that was my childhood, and the childhoods of so many people like me, and it was taken and written as a joke for straight people to laugh at. It's easy to sit there and say 'Oh people are overly sensitive nowadays', when you're not gay, or trans or bullied, or struggle with body image or addiction or identity like some of the 'jokes' highlighted, and you've never had to deal with the pain that comes with the reality. It's easy to say that when you've had a relatively easy life. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Friends and it'll hold a very special place in my heart, and is widely recognised as one of, if not the one and only, greatest TV show of all time, but some of the jokes in the show are a reflection of the ignorance of 90's and they should stay in the '90's.
I never liked the Ross character as created by Schwimmer, but I have some sympathy for his situation. Imagine how humiliating to a man it would be for his wife to leave him for a woman.
William Ainsworth Just because she was into another woman doesn't grant Ross the right to treat it any different than if she left for a man. It is more humiliating if a man cannot come to terms and move on like normal.
hisserenehighness A transgender person is not a drag queen. A transgender person who was born male and changed to female is now female, so a female wearing a dress is not drag. A man who identifies still as a man and not having surgery or hormones but dresses as a woman is a drag queen. Two entirely different kinds of people.
None of this jokes offended me. Plus, they all had a moral at the end. C'mon, Ross was the best man on Carol's wedding. How many ex-husbands would do that for someone who cheated on them, regardless of the gender?
Yes, I'm none of those. But you know what? I was a kid when I watched Chandler inviting his father to his wedding, that was my first exposure to a Transsexual on TV and I wanted them to make up because the Dad (sorry I don't remember her name) seemed really nice. I was happy when she showed up at the wedding.
Hi, trans person here, You're completely entitled to opinions like this, because fictional characters and fictional weddings are interpretive. If we're allowed to be happy when a pregnant characters give birth, you're allowed to be happy for transgender (it isn't transsexual anymore, by the way. Quick fact for the future) and for a gay wedding in tv, especially in the 1990s where it wasn't as shown as it is today. Just because it directly affects you, does not make it okay to be an asshole to who it does not affect if the person who it doesn't affect is actually being kind. Bel Air, you are not entitled to be a jackass just because of your identity. Pretty sure people thinking they're allowed to be rude because of who they are is why people think you can be homophobic to straight people. You're being a bigot here, and it is actually discrimination (not homophobic or transphobic though) so perhaps you should actually stop. Don't like how LGBTQA+ is treated? Don't treat others, regardless of their identity, the same way. Human rights exist. Thanks for your time, August
McSuperfly then the show would seen too fake, the audience will the show out for the fact that character are too perfect to be real. People will always a way to dislike sth.
It's not that there can't be flaws, it's just that you souldn't be disrespectful and offensive, everybody has flaws even those who almost never offend people...
What about the episodes where Rachel literally sexual harrasses Tag before she even hires him and then admits to the friends that she didnt hire the woman that was qualified for the job because she wanted to get it on with Tag. Every time I watch that episode I cringe. That is sexual sexual harassment at its peak. It doesnt matter if it is man on woman or woman on man that was in poor taste
This just makes me pissed at how annoyingly sensitive my generation is. I love that nowadays we address and bring light to issues that long ago would get looked over, BUT CAN WE RELAX AND TAKE A JOKE FOR ONCE?
Briana G Most of these were not that bad. I’ve rewatched the show a bunch of times and the only thing I’ve had a problem with was the guys way of dealing with masculinity. All three of them, particularly Ross were so annoying about it.
There are hilarious tv/movies now a days. Deadpool, Game of Thrones, comedians like Stephen Colbert/Kevin Hart, SNL, and much more. Especially shows like Stranger things wouldn't have existed in the 90s. These youtube channels are oversensitive and biased, it's not worth listening to.
"If it were written today", written by this lady's standards, it would be complete trash. Oh ya, maybe this is why the only shows anyone watches on netflix, by the data, are this and the office.
Oh My God, I'm lucky to have watched Friends in them 90's... what appals me the most how is how uptight "we" have become, Friends was a SITCOM for crying out loud...
Chandler’s father is a drag queen. That is soooo different from being trans. He is a gay man who performs as a woman. He has no desire to be a woman. He isn’t a transgender woman, he is a drag queen. -A trans Friends fan
For argument's sake, 'cause I love this show 😂, Rachel was pretty crazy jealous and ruins Ross's relationships as well. She got Phoebe's friend to shave her head again, she showed up on Ross's wedding to stop it, she told him that she likes him TWICE when he was in a loving relationship (Julie & when he was making up with Emily after the wedding). Plus, Ross' jealousy of Mark was clearly valid as she invited him over right after "they were on a break" and then proceeded to date him later in the series just to get back at Ross. So if we're talking petty characters, I'd say Rachel is definitely up on that list.
Quite agree, and even though Ross was jealous it seemed clear from Rachels comments she and Ross were all but broken up, then she gets upset how he sleeps with someone on the rebound then later forces him to "agree" that hes a terrible person and the only one in the wrong.
I agree with most things you mention but not the Mark thing. Ross was worried that Mark was going to come on to Rachel and that Rachel would cheat on him with Mark. The girls kept saying he had it all wrong. They were right, since while Mark was indeed interested in Rachel, he never intended to do anything about it while Rachel was still seeing Ross (he says this when she invites him over).
plus I don't see how these actions wouldn't fly on tv now in days??? like why? it's 2 people acting immature and realistic. people do dirty shit like that in real life. rachel and ross are characters who have flaws and don't act right a lot of the time. i'm confused how that makes them unfit for tv now???
The alcoholism storyline - anyone who has been through alcohol recovery knows that this can be a very real part of the problem. The alcohol masks the real problems & makes the person seem fun, outgoing & carefree. A lot of those in addiction lose their peer group once they recover. The show is highlighting in a light hearted way, the very complex nature of addiction - including the tendency to project, notice, something inaccurately, other people’s issues with substances & be unable to be around it during recovery. One of the most helpful parts of recovery is to be able to bring humour to the situation not to trivialise but to as a way to bring lightness to a very real issue
I laugh too I don't care about the jokes but there are many things where I think "man this never would have been ok in this era" because everyone just loves to complain about everything now a days
Im a teenager and I have always, and will always, find this show hilarious. Show nowadays try way too hard to be non-discriitory so they won't piss off the overly sensitive people that watch them. thats why I don't like many current sitcoms
Lexi i think its because the minorities are always the target of jokes. Make the same amount of jokes with the American white and straight guy and then we'll talk.
No, jokes about gays and other perversions are unacceptable. But you still can make fun of white people, of manly men, of all normal stuff, you can ridicule it.
Yes, jokes. A thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter. None of the characters got angry at the jokes so, they’re just meant for laughter.
Something that I heard, which I think is so true is this quote: "What's important here is intent. If it's intended as a joke then it's fine as long as you're trying to make people laugh." Or somewhere along the lines of that!
wayne mental illness not being a “thing” is what generated most of the issues in society that time that perpetuates nowadays. people were forced to repress their feelings and the problems going in their minds (such as depression and anxiety) and that shows in the later generations where the majority of kids didn’t feel secure enough to tell their parents how they felt. mental illness being a thing now is a good thing.
Maybe it's because I'm currently breastfeeding but I find the breastfeeding episode hilarious. My brother and dad act the same way when I start breastfeeding 😂😂
Veronika Daisy like I can understand things like making fun of gay people or making jokes about peoples weight the over sensitive that I was talking about would be like when you're making an account and u have to choose male or female and the person being omg this is discrimination aah
I'm sure the makers, directors, writers and of course the lead actors of this 90's sitcom are RELIEVED and DELIGHTED that a snotty, buzzfeed reading offend-culture person "let a joke pass" from their sitcom 20 years after it aired 😂😂
Friends was and still is hilarious!!...People are way to sensitive now days, they all need to get a sense of humour and learn to take a joke even when they're the butt of it 😅
And that's why I love friends it takes me back to a time where you could say gay jokes and be ok and not a time that every Disney Channel show has an LGBT character in it
With regards to the Monica and Richard one, my take from that was that it was less about the number of sexual partners Monica had, and more the fact that Richard had only really ever been with his ex, implying he was less experienced. If anyone was being shamed there, it was him, and I don't even think they were shaming him. Monica and Richard acknowledged the gap in their experience and worked with it. They break up because Richard was done having kids, not because he hadn't slept with enough women, or because Monica had slept with too many men.
Jenna I agree. I also chalked it up to the generation gap as well. That his generation had their low number of partners, usually their spouses..and women were more comfortable with their sexualities in the 90s and had more partners..especially since they were in their mid-20s, right? He was more or less just taken off guard by her number, but it wasn't a deal breaker. The whole kids situation was, like you said.
Agreed wholeheartedly as Monica's 'number' was never actually revealed while Richard clearly states 2 (his wife + Monica, as he only ever slept with women he was in love with).
Quite agrree, and also Joey wasn't pulled up on his womanising as he was made out to that being all he had going for him due to his intelligence but was also shown to be a caring guy deep down and the times he fell in love he fell hard, at a glance this video in itself feels like taking things out of context based on personal biases which makes me think the people who think they are the most enlightened end up being the most bigoted of all.
@Rachel Berryman I haven't really watched any of these shows but you could be right. But there is a difference between humor and offensive words and friends has a lot of things that people take so seriously nowadays. Well actually people take everything seriously today not only TV shows but every little thing in the world. By the way i am not coming at you, you probably are right about the shows you mentioned
So nobody gonna talk about ross making a move on his cousin?
Wow i almost forgot
that's normal in most southern states. so no one sees it out of place.
Yeah I know
Nachito W

Well said
Exactly!
People nowadays just blow everything out of proportion. Not everything is offensive, it's only offensive if you say it with an offensive tone, if it's clear that it's a joke, everything's cool.
kuddos to you for understanding the jokes on the show were just jokes and not taking any of it seriously😁

@@ada4jiji oh I agree with you a MILLION PERCENT 👍🏼
Me neither
Nor do I, except for that Paolo one.
A rebuttal for each point:
This is exactly what I was thinking.. but this is definitely better detailed..

Well said!!
This is why Friends is funnier than any sitcom today
Indeed. The characters are supposed to be flawed and their flaws are played for laughs. Sadly the modern press is lazy and when a few thousands SJW nutters on twitter post OUTRAGW the press takes this as the opinion of all fo society like all the tens of millions who watched friends agree.

Everyone looked down on her for that
Ryan Courtright being gay was frowned upon then. It’s better now but still isn’t great. The “Me Too” movement didn’t happen until 2011. Neither of them would fly today but it was risky to put it in then (for Joey).

Hmm no
When George Carlin died, I think people lost the ability to understand jokes. Sitcoms exaggerate things to make jokes. Plus yes, it does take some adjusting to when someone breastfeeds. Unless you’re around it a lot, it’s a little surprising. Joey and Chandler are a little shocked, Ross isn’t.
The jokes all work because there is character growth and having a change of heart and thoughts. Plus these are friends who are honest with each other.
Literally all of these jokes would work today and are just as funny
Some of them would work today but they would be dropped some angry articles from Buzzfeed or Huffington Post in the next few days
This is idiotic. Friends was very progressive for it's time. Not many shows deal with a son accepting a transgender dad. Even by today's standards
They said the jokes wouldn't work TODAY. They didn't say they weren't progressive for the 90's. Our culture has changed a lot in 20 years.
I think the trouble is that Chandler doesn't accept his dad, though...
zw0lfb4um nobody can accept a dad like that. It's not because he was trans. He was just a terrible father
Arun G he was indeed terrible as a father, chandler even stated that once he saw his parents in an orgy when he was 9!! And in the end he still accepted his dad. That is way too progressive even for today
I used to be fat as a child and still found the jokes about Monica's weight hilarious! 😂😂

Yeah, the double standard thing is American TV shows still thinks you should be 'fit' otherwise you are ugly. "America, where dreams come true and you can be who you wanna be"
More like where you're dreams gets shattered when you talk to a person in California who shames you for not being transgender, Gay or fat.

If these jokes are wrong, I dont want them to be right.
I thought it was more his insecurity about what others think that was part of those episodes, and especially back then I can see how he was a relatable character.

he also didn't sleep with Rachel's sister even tho she made a move on him
That is actually the one time he acted like a decent human being around women (obviously Rachel’s reaction is just ridiculous and far from okay...)
@Alan James Jill
It was always one character that stood out and, in contrast to the other characters, behaved immaturely.
that is so true
Thank you for making an insightful comment that addressed the issues with the list without resorting to bashing social justice warriors.
They didn't break up because Ross was jealous, they broke up because of the whole "we were on a break" thing.
But Ross' behaviour isn't portrayed as a good thing, so why would that be a problem? And the whole lesbian thing as well as the masculinity problems are always played in a way that makes it clear, that the opinions the characters have are ridiculous, which is why they're a joke.
I agree, this is ridiculous. The person or people who run this channel are running out of stuff to talk about, obviously...
It's the "Archie Bunker" effect. TV writers now worry that unless they portray a bigoted character as evil and not just laughable, viewers will laugh WITH the character rather than AT him and sympathize with his antisocial views.
Yes!! And Ross ultimately walks Carol down the aisle to marry Susan proving how accepting he truely is
The problem with Ross character is not that he acts possessive and jealous towards his girlfriend, because I agree that Rachel acts the same way in a lot of situations.
Friends worked because how real it was. The jokes are still fine today.
"IT WAS JUST A JOKE!!!" is the new "WE WERE ON A BREAK!!!"
Yes! So fucking sick of hearing that. And it is possible to have not offensive jokes about homosexuality, but I personally don’t think this show achieves that often.
the thing is they were on a break and sometimes a joke is just a joke
So glad i experienced the 90s when people actually has a sense of humour and a backbone.
So true! Now we can no longer laugh at anything: everyone feels offended. And now? Well, people don't laugh anymore, they lament.
The commentary on this is wild, every clip is hilarious then, now and tomorrow. Lighten up world, this is comedy!!!

#3 “homophobia” Joey: I’m good with the whole gay thing”
Roz Hall those are my favorite lines cuz Chandler goes “what gay thing” and then Joey goes”umm just in general “ 😂
Yah they so didn't understand some of these jokes
Or Homophobia: the first lesbian wedding on TV in 1996 that every character took seriously.
I think it was more of the lesbian think and how Joey fetishized lesbians and also how if a man in the show did anything seen as feminine they’d have to do something masculine

That’s kinda true to life. People gonna people ya know 🤷🏾♂️👍🏾
For the record, these jokes might get the show canceled in today's day in age, but to say they "would not work" might not be accurate.
The one where Ross is jealous and possessive? You mean the entire show?
Olivia Rose hey cut Ross some slack he just didn’t want to leave Rachel
Good one.
Yes, Ross is the worst.
Still far batter then being Rachel
He's the worse character that was ever born
If friends came out today: "episode 1-finale: the one where nothing is allowed to be funny"

True though....
No offence but I wonder where ppl lost their sense of humour
I love this show, and the fact that it was made years ago with problematic issues is A REAL THING, but that does NOT mean that you can't enjoy the show. it's only important to acknowledge the problems and know that nowadays they'd be unacceptable. you can still laugh at the jokes.

"This feels dated by today's standards". No shit Sherlock, these were made almost 20 - 25 years ago.
These jokes didn't make me cringe.... This analysis did.
Doug Foxford the gay jokes are really cringey
Ghost Face could that comment BE any more cringey?
+Doug Foxford You telling me the gay jokes aren't lame to you? They're the most low-hanging fruit ever.
thank you...
Doug Foxford these jokes are still funnier than most sitcoms today. Everyone's just too sensitive. People arent supposed to take sitcoms seriously.
The most ridiculous criticism about Ross character is that he is possesive and more jealous
When Rachel ruins his life for more than 6 season because she can't see Ross with another girl
When Ross tries his best to move on because it will make Rachel happy
And every one criticize ross
I absolutely love friends, and sometimes people need to get that this show was made in the 90's, so ofc so many things were different and whatever, but jokes are jokes! let's just enjoy this masterpiece of a show
I love friends!! I felt like they were my friends and I was sad when it ended 😔
These jokes are even funnier now that they're considered "offensive". 😂
True
Yes!!!! 😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂🤣

"offensive" jokes are always the funniest one
@@ada4jijifuck nowadays
Ross: I need a couch that says "Kids welcome here" and that also says "Come here to me."
Rachel: You say that too kids?
Although many trans women do perform drag, which is a different thing again.
None of this jokes offended me. Plus, they all had a moral at the end. C'mon, Ross was the best man on Carol's wedding. How many ex-husbands would do that for someone who cheated on them, regardless of the gender?
Sofia Matos maybe it’s because you aren’t trans? Or gay? Or relate to any of these??
Yes, I'm none of those. But you know what? I was a kid when I watched Chandler inviting his father to his wedding, that was my first exposure to a Transsexual on TV and I wanted them to make up because the Dad (sorry I don't remember her name) seemed really nice. I was happy when she showed up at the wedding.
Sofia Matos You’re none of those things so you can’t be affected by them I don’t give a shit about when you were first exposed trans people
Bel Air Okay... you're starting to get nasty now. I'm out.
Hi, trans person here,
You're completely entitled to opinions like this, because fictional characters and fictional weddings are interpretive.
Thanks for your time,
August
the fact they pointed out ross being controlling and ruining Rachel's relationships but Rachel does the exact same thing is quite funny to me

Fat shaming is proper to most sitcoms tbh , how i met your mother does it too ! Does not keep me from enjoying the shows tho ;)
Wow, how boring would this show have been if none of the characters had any flaws and never progressed?
McSuperfly then the show would seen too fake, the audience will the show out for the fact that character are too perfect to be real. People will always a way to dislike sth.
Did you mean: “how boring would it have BEEN” lol
It's not that there can't be flaws, it's just that you souldn't be disrespectful and offensive, everybody has flaws even those who almost never offend people...
@Joe S In an actually nice environment in Sweden where people genuinely care about others, why?
McSuperfly But it’s a boring show as is.
All of these jokes are still relevant, the world just lost its mind.😂
Don’t get mad at a show for portraying the world as it was not as t is
This just makes me pissed at how annoyingly sensitive my generation is.

Chandler’s father is a drag queen. That is soooo different from being trans. He is a gay man who performs as a woman. He has no desire to be a woman. He isn’t a transgender woman, he is a drag queen. -A trans Friends fan
Chandlers dad always wanted to be called him, dad, sir etc. So he's a gay man who dresses in drag, not a trans female.
Emz Louise, yes! That is what I’m getting at! He is a drag queen, not a trans woman.
Seth Edwards exactly!
I was thinking that too because he performs in a drag show, but they also went to chanler and monicas wedding as a woman
Sabrina Trinidad, that is true. However, many drag queens go out in drag. A wedding is a great excuse to look absolutely fabulous.
HikariMichi42. She cheats with barry. She is definitely capable.
Yes, I was just saying I disagreed with the part about Mark, specifically.
plus I don't see how these actions wouldn't fly on tv now in days??? like why? it's 2 people acting immature and realistic. people do dirty shit like that in real life. rachel and ross are characters who have flaws and don't act right a lot of the time. i'm confused how that makes them unfit for tv now???

Fact

Dear god... Yes!
I disliked because i prefer Ross and Rachel :P
nope, I like Monica and Rachel.....and Chandler, Ross and Joey
Bobbius Shadow so... you don't like Phoebe?
(Or you love Phoebe.. 😉)
Men arent supposed to have feelings remember smh
Quite agrree, and also Joey wasn't pulled up on his womanising as he was made out to that being all he had going for him due to his intelligence but was also shown to be a caring guy deep down and the times he fell in love he fell hard, at a glance this video in itself feels like taking things out of context based on personal biases which makes me think the people who think they are the most enlightened end up being the most bigoted of all.
