I love how Alvin called Rie the master and expert, and yet throughout the entire thing she just kept saying Alvin always makes stuff better than she does. That kind of praise, especially from someone that's a friend is one of the best kinds
it's fun that Rie is featured on the episode with Shana, since Shana is voice by Rie Kugimiya haha! this episode was SO cute; Rie and Alvin work so well together ✨
I love how each regional variant of this dish has a name based on what the pattern cut into the dough looks like. Japanese meronpan looks like a melon, Chinese pineapple buns look like pineapples, Mexican conchas look like conch shells.
Rie-san! How nice to see the two of you working together again. I currently have her cookbook on my Christmas list, but if no one indulges me, I'll be getting it for the new year. Melonpan is so tasty, never realized there was cookie on top of the bread dough though!
Pretty sure someone else has mentioned it but I'd like to take some time to appreciate the fact that this video features Rie McClenny and that Shana's Japanese VA is Rie Kugimiya
Rie. Such a fun personality on camera. And this is no different. Andy really DOES get the best for his channel. I'm glad to be a member so I can pay these wonderful people what they deserve.
I've eaten a lot of both - the topping on conchas tends to be thinner and more "done," and in my experience tends to be flavored with vanilla or cinnamon or both. Melon pan has a thicker, doughier coating that is unflavored. They're both lovely with a cup of coffee!
Alvin, Rie , Melon Pan and SHAKUGAN NO SHANA - comfort content😭 Also can’t wait to have it in Japan again next year. Tried last 2016 and honestly it’s one of my favorite breads
Hehe, as soon as Alvin said it was one of his closest friends and I saw the jumper, I knew it was Rie, one of the best presenters Alvin has ever worked with 100%
Tried out this recipe a few days ago. I think if I tried it again I would have to increase the sugar. Aside from the sugar on the top there is no sweetness to it at all, it's just like eating a big bread roll.
its always curious to me when the guests youtube channel isnt linked in the description. You listed her instagram, but not her youtube channel - I would expect if you have them on the channel, you want others to find her channel based on this cross over. I just saw Rei on Marion's kitchen making lacy dumplings as well! Subscribed!
It's hilarious to me how Anime With Alvin goes back and forth between trying to reproduce these ridiculous, made-up foods, and just making normal melon pan.
NO WAYYYY, I'M currently eating one right now not joking, I was scrolling through my UA-cam subscriptions then I found this. I'm currently in Japan right now 🔥🤘🏾🖤!!! 🇯🇵
Have you guys done Cookie Monster's cookies from Sesame Street? I am struggling to find a recipe that can make a cookie so crumbly yet hold its shape. EDIT: it's for my dads birthday. He loves Cookie Monster
I wonder if this treat is influenced by colonization by Spanish and Portuguese missionaries before the Edo period. Alvin even mentions it's similarity in look to the concha (a Mexican sweet bread invented after Spain brought wheat with them when colonizing Central America) and "pan" is the Spanish word for bread.
Surely you can truly make melonpan actually melon flavored if you infuse butter with actual melón or cantelope. How would you do that you ask? Beats me honestly An alternative perhaps would be using cantelope or melon pulp in the recipe, replacing it's weight in milk
TIL Melon Pan doesn't actually taste like melon and that is a godsend. As much as I'd like to eat melon, it's as gross to me as people who hate cilantro.
Yep the Japanese word for bread was imported from Portugese traders, who from my understanding were the first to introduce bread to Japan. And what an introduction! Japanese bread recipes are some of the most unusual and innovative ones I have ever seen.
A HEART BEAT THAT LASTS FOR ETERNITY. LIVES CONSUMED IN SOUNDLESS BALLS OF FIRE. NO ONE CAN TELL IF THE WORLD IS DISPLACED, AND WHEN THE FLAMES OF THE CRIMSON WORLD SWEEPS OVER ALL.
Sometimes, I like to oil the inside of a giant plastic tub and take a nap inside like a proofing dough ball. I take of all my clothes, and cover the top with a damp towel. I like to pretend I am a loaf of raw bread dough that's proofing. It's such a spiritual experience coming out of the bin after allowing my body to slowly expand.
This is something I am surprised is not more popular. It is just a sweet pastry... it looks nice, we love bread in America, and we are obsessed with sweets. Honestly, why we have not just decided this is a breakfast food is beyond me.
My first exposure to the term "melon bread" was in the name of a joke miniboss from a really old Sega Genesis game called Gunstar Heroes, that I played constantly back in the days. Little did I know it was beyond a simple nonsense-word boss name, and in 2005 I actually learned it was a type of bread thanks to the anime Yakitate! Japan. I found a recipe online and my family was instantly hooked when I made it for them!
Can you try doing Azuma Kazuma's three way "perfect" Melon bread from Yakitate Japan. The dough, the cookie and the Melon filling from canned Melon juice are to be combined to produce a delicious product.
I second that. Yakitate was what taught me about meronpan, and within weeks I was scouring the late-2005 internet for recipes for it. One of the best discoveries in my cooking life!
Just about ANYTHING from Yakitate Japan would be great for this show. I think they already did the 324-Layer Croissant! I'm personally looking forward to the Mt. Fuji Naan and the Candied Turtle.
I still remember how I used to watch this anime from animax in cable tv. It really is the staple tsundere fmc anime alongside Hayate and Index/railgun anime.
Rie is such a cute and beautiful woman, and is honestly why I watched Tasty videos so much. Just find it funny that you never see or hear of Tasty anymore lol. Glad to see her again ❤
I love how Alvin called Rie the master and expert, and yet throughout the entire thing she just kept saying Alvin always makes stuff better than she does. That kind of praise, especially from someone that's a friend is one of the best kinds
That's probably one of the reasons they are friends.
Rie is super sweet
Artist mentality
They have mutual appreciation for each other's craft.
YAY! Rie needs to move to the Babish Universe permanently to keep making it fancy!
YESSSS❤❤❤❤❤
her body language was killing it in this one, without a single word I just felt her presence.
MAKE IT FAAAAANCY
it's fun that Rie is featured on the episode with Shana, since Shana is voice by Rie Kugimiya haha! this episode was SO cute; Rie and Alvin work so well together ✨
Shakugan no Shana is a blast from the past!!
I was surprised too!
I still remember the iconic opening song for the anime!! Still a great song to listen to :D
Shakugan no Shana is criminally underrated.
@@ultragamerj Right? I have only met one other person that has seen it. It was my first "non-mainstream" anime, loved it and got me hooked to anime
Light my Fire by Kotoko ❤ this song ☺️
It’s crazy to me how similar these look to Conchas but they taste so different. I love melon pan
"Conchas"
_laughs in Argentinian_
@@DarkOverlord96 yeah isnt that basically just slang for ... well
I love how each regional variant of this dish has a name based on what the pattern cut into the dough looks like. Japanese meronpan looks like a melon, Chinese pineapple buns look like pineapples, Mexican conchas look like conch shells.
weeb
bro this episode unlocked a childhood memory for me
_Core Memory Unlocked_
Melon Pan. Up there with Croquettes and Ramen when it comes to anime food that has dominated the scene even in non food related anime.
Curry my friend, Japanese curry as well
And jelly donuts! 🍙
@@egodreas
"Oh boy I sure do love jelly donuts!"
Takoyaki and omurice too.
Rie-san! How nice to see the two of you working together again. I currently have her cookbook on my Christmas list, but if no one indulges me, I'll be getting it for the new year.
Melonpan is so tasty, never realized there was cookie on top of the bread dough though!
even without Rie's smile on camera you know she and Alvin are just laughing through this shoot.
Pretty sure someone else has mentioned it but I'd like to take some time to appreciate the fact that this video features Rie McClenny and that Shana's Japanese VA is Rie Kugimiya
Aw yeah! I missed seeing Rie on the tasty channel but seeing her on here? That's just awesome.
Bruh. This brings me back to the first time I saw Shana in high school. Fansubs like 2005...man I should rewatch the whole series again
I certainly think that you should. Shakugan no Shana is criminally underrated and deserves more love.
The one I had in a bakery in Japan was green food colored, but had like a 🍈 cream inside.
Clicked so fast once I saw Rie was teaming up with Alvin again. So nice to see them working together again!
RIE!!!! im so happy to see her here!! :DD
Rie. Such a fun personality on camera. And this is no different. Andy really DOES get the best for his channel. I'm glad to be a member so I can pay these wonderful people what they deserve.
Nice
I just love Rie and Alvin.
Already hopeing for another colaboration in the BCU ❤❤
This is probably one of the best episodes I've ever seen.
Is this basically a concha? 😍🇲🇽
Edit: it looks softer and less dry than a concha. I'd love to see them make an actual concha! ❤
I thought the exact same thing! It's so cool that two cultures have such similar sweet breads like this :)
I've eaten a lot of both - the topping on conchas tends to be thinner and more "done," and in my experience tends to be flavored with vanilla or cinnamon or both. Melon pan has a thicker, doughier coating that is unflavored. They're both lovely with a cup of coffee!

I love Rie!!! So happy to her and alvin!! They are always so fun to watch together! Wish i had friends like them. ❤
This video made me want to cry. Since About To Eat ended I've missed the whole team. It was nice to see at least you two together again.
Alvin decided to make his melon pan big. Appropriate.
Melon Pan! The Shana anime introduce me to this type bread and i was lucky to find a bakery that made something that look similar to Melon bread.
RIE!!! What an absolute sweetheart! Nice to see her here!
Learning that melon bread isnt actually melon flavored this whole time makes me irrationally angry
When I learned that, the child in me died.
Hehe, as soon as Alvin said it was one of his closest friends and I saw the jumper, I knew it was Rie, one of the best presenters Alvin has ever worked with 100%
I love Rie and Alvin! So wonderful to see them together. Such wonderful chefs!
Wow, Shana-tan. This is a nostalgia trip! Thanks!
i’ve forgotten about shakugan no shana, what a nostalgic feeling!

Can we see a cooking video of making mushroom gratin from The Misfit of Demon King Academy soon?
Asked for it quite a few times
It's hilarious to me how Anime With Alvin goes back and forth between trying to reproduce these ridiculous, made-up foods, and just making normal melon pan.
Loved when Rie would make appearances in Worth It on Tasty's channel. Would be a great addition to BCU!
Oh, the make it fancy lady.
Shakugan no Shana, now that' s a name i haven't heard in a long time...
I love how humble you both are! She's the master and still gives you compliments💗. I would love to try both approaches next weekend
I am so happy you've made this video. Shakugan No Shana is my favorite anime. Seeing this brings me back memories.
Rie needs to join the Babish universe too!! I miss make it fancy 😢😢
This was so wholesome and amazing. Love love love Anime with Alvin!
Ah man, Shakugan no Shana! A classic.
Bet this recipe is gonna be fancy 🔥🔥🔥
I love Rie, I’m so happy she’s here!!! Also Alvin you da bomb!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Now, I will like a Yakisoba, No yakisaba.
Wait! Melon pans actually do not tasted like melons?! Aw man! That means I've been missing out big time!
Melon Pan reminds me of Conchas bread, and I absolutely love how similar they look, and I must try melon pan to taste the difference 😋
Tried those in Japan ! Really tasty !
man I can't believe it's 2023 and we got a video referencing Shakugan no Shana, love the series but sadly it's largely forgotten now
Shana's love of Melon Bread make her adorable
NO WAYYYY, I'M currently eating one right now not joking, I was scrolling through my UA-cam subscriptions then I found this. I'm currently in Japan right now 🔥🤘🏾🖤!!! 🇯🇵

Happy to see you Rie! Keep it up and remember to always "Make it Fancy"
I haven't seen Rie make food in forever on here. Happy to see that she's still making food.
I think you are going to meke the melon pan from Yakitake Japan😅😅
It's Rie!!! I haven't seen a video of hers in a while
She took some time away from UA-cam to write the book, but she posted a new video last month revealing the book and one of the recipes (shoyu ramen)!
TIL Melon Pan doesn't actually taste like melon and that is a godsend. As much as I'd like to eat melon, it's as gross to me as people who hate cilantro.
Oh man, this episode has half the old crew from A.T.E. Just need Andrew and Inga
Melon pan kinda looks like a concha from Mexico, my favorite sweet bread. Something interesting for you, Pan means Bread in Spanish.
Yep the Japanese word for bread was imported from Portugese traders, who from my understanding were the first to introduce bread to Japan.

I'd've said "Nichijou", because their melon pan scene is so relatable, but yeah.

Melon pan in Japan has an extremely light melon taste to them. Source: I lived in Japan for 5 years.
ROLL THE DARN SLEEVES !!! Sorry but I kept thinking it everytime he just pulled them back lol
You should do Beef Stroganoff from Symphogear.
Can you adapt this cookie dough to make the topping of mexican coffee buns?
I was looking for a reason to rewatch shakugan no shana. And i have found it.
Always a treat to see Rie anywhere!
For another video, requesting Eisen's (and Stoltz's) Giant Hamburg Steak from Frieren
Oh, they're basically the same as Hong Kong pineapple buns! I love those things
All you need now is some Matcha Ice cream to put in the Melon Pan
Rie & Alvin! How fun! 👏💜
You can't spell Friend without Rie! :)
WE LOVE RIE 🤗 Has anyone bought her cookbook? & If you did, how were her recipes??
You guys are adorable.
Melonpan is a magical invention: imagine you get to have a nice soft roll AND a cookie at the same time?
Watching these videos brings me peace after a hectic day. 🙏💕
I always loved Shakugana Shana!! Thanks for this vid!!
Wait other people remember this show?
This is something I am surprised is not more popular. It is just a sweet pastry... it looks nice, we love bread in America, and we are obsessed with sweets. Honestly, why we have not just decided this is a breakfast food is beyond me.
Laughing that the two lines from Rie are her saying Alvin did it better.
Melon bread is the ultimate snack, I miss it every day I wake up unable to eat one
My first exposure to the term "melon bread" was in the name of a joke miniboss from a really old Sega Genesis game called Gunstar Heroes, that I played constantly back in the days. I know japanese melon bread from yakikate japan manga
This also reminds me of eating pineapple buns in my childhood. Would be awesome to see that made!
Shakugan No Shana mentioned!!!
Rie! Making things fancy! Cookbook best seller!
It's high time you two teamed up again! You two have always had great chemistry when working together and I'm glad we get to see this again.

Of all the foods I have encountered in my time in Japan, melon-pan is BY FAR my favorite. I can't wait to try this one out for myself.
Bro what an elite anime pick, this was a huge part of my childhood
