    I installed this optic on a crossman 760 air rifle.I have now shot the riffle around 500 times during target/plinking practice, and the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope has done well.With this optic, I have neutralized around 30 pigeons that were invading one of my buildings.For my short range air rifle, I will continue to use this scope, but will be upgrading to a more powerful scope, when I buy a more powerful air rifle, in order to shoot at longer distance.For the money I have spent, this scope has truly been a great buy.

    Crazy thing is midrange power was high power in days of old. When I first clicked on the video I was expecting a conversation about the 2-10 line with the 1-10 sprinkled in there. Interesting topic and video nonetheless.

    Hunters in the eastern part of the country are looking for a scope that tops out at no more than 10 or 12 and has a low end below 3x. Ideal would be a 1-10x44HD in ffp with a workable reticle and an illuminated floating aiming point inside the crosshairs. The large objective for the bigger eyebox and to bring light in, lower power for snap, offhand shots...and make it light please.

    I used to be all about the high mag scopes but have started to lean towards mid mag scopes for hunting now I think 2-12 or 3-15 are probably the best mag ranges you could put on a hunting rifle weather you hunt in the timber or out west.

    I know it's at the lower end of mid-magnification, but I think a 2-12 is probably some of the best bang for your buck, as well as the best use for it's size and weight.

    I was part of a scout platoon in Ramadi 05 and 06. An aimpoint on a 14.5 inch m4 was fine out to 200 meters. Longer engagements were handled with machineguns, artillery, and snipers. Edit: our snipers used fixed 10x power leupolds.

    As a Canadian bow hunter that shoots moose every year and has converted to occasional rifle use. Mid range is the way to go. Problem is the attitude and sales tactics in the stores. I walked into a store a few months ago with my new rifle. I explained my hunting experience of usually taking game within 50m. Now with rifle a long shot would be out to 250m. First thing the salesman grabbed is the Razor 6x36. I said no I was thinking more 12 to 16 power max. His words "don't you want to shoot long range". There is no long range in the bush I hunt. Despite his persistence eventually I walked out with a diamond back 4x16 FFP. Great scope but even wonder if I need the ffp.
    On another note I just sent in a scope in for a warranty repair. The service and experience was awesome.

    I understand that these gentlemen are coming from a military/tactical background. For hunting, a 3-9x scope was considered a great general purpose solution for decades. Today you can get 2.5-10x scopes ranging from budget offerings under $200 to a $1,600 Nightforce. There are a lot of high quality offerings in the $600-1,000 range. That’s a reasonable price point for many hunters. Today a 1-4x or 1-5x magnification factor seems very practical without too many trade offs in terms of optic quality or cost. When you go up to 1-8x or 1-10x mechanical and optical constraints come into play. Another thing to consider is that making a first focal plane reticle you actually can see and use across the full magnification range gets a lot more challenging with 1-10x magnification.
    What I’m trying to say is that I’d hoped for a discussion of 2.5-10x or 2-12x scopes for hunting applications and this video wasn’t that.

    I shot a 4-16x optic all year last year in prs. Honestly never came off about 14x the whole season. Enough to engage a 2moa plate at 1100 yards but enough field of view to move around all the other targets without getting lost in mag.

    I emailed Vortex about the possibility of a compact 3-18-ish scope, something in the profile of the Eotech Vudu 5-25. I have to work around a 10" handguard, and if I throw a 12-14" scope on that I run out of rail space quick, and the 5-25 is just too much glass imo.
    Im all in on the medium optics, they arent a replacement for higher magnification glass if its needed, but I'm only using a 5.56, my concern is just being able to positively ID whatever I'm shooting at and doing accurate ranging.

    People talk about 1x per 100yds/m, but for my aging eyes wanting good PID I prefer closer to 3x per 100yds/m. That makes a 9x to 12x range great for realistic personal abilities for MY top end of range/distance shots. Even 8x (for me) is enough for as far as I'm able to shoot with any degree of accuracy.

    Personally I still think that the higher powered optics are the only way to go... yes the higher magnification optics are heavier and cost more. Wait a few extra months to save that extra hundred bucks before you buy a scope... One thing I learned many years ago that in the long run never EVER try to save a few bucks especially on optics. Eventually you will one day buy the scope that you should to get the quality and functionality you need. I honestly have never met a satisfied scope owner that bought the cheaper optic to save a hundred bucks. I believe that hunting could be the only factor in a lighter scope. We all know that all scopes have a percentage of glass quality change at higher magnification... No matter how expensive or how inexpensive the optic they all change when turned up. Now a lot of people say well I never shoot over 14 or 16 power anyway... Ok but wouldn't you rather have a higher magnification scope adjusted to a mid range adjustment in the center of adjustment then maxed out on the highest end of a 16 power variable? 16 power on a maximum 16 power adjustment will have the fuzzy edges. but a 25x scope adjusted to the center of adjustment of 16x will be as clear as the optic can be. Now I promise that you'll one day want more power when you're on the bench... You don't have to pack along the spotting scope or worse go out and buy a spotting scope to site in... But if you need your steps using your smart watch I guess a dozen trips to the 100 yd. or heaven forbid the 200 yds. target is what you want... I guarantee you there will be several times in every shooting season that you'll wish you had that 25x adjustment just so you can see that last shot... I truly believe that your at a noticeable disadvantage with a lower powered optic. Go with the most power that your application offers and use your scope to its maximum potential.

    • @mikemelina7395
      @mikemelina7395 Рік тому +2

      All of that goes out the window the day you get up from the bench and take a walk in the woods with your rifle. The man who hunts in woods has no need for a 25x scope and though the conversation today was dominated by "tactical" applications, it was about mid-mag scopes, 16x isn't "mid-mag", 9-12 is mid-mag. Deer hunters want something that has good light transmission and big field of view and much lower power at the bottom end. That's something you'll never get with a LR bench scope.
