A good list, with points that I mostly agree with. It was weird how the Doctor started smooching people randomly like Bugs Bunny or one of the Animaniacs in Series 7. I still love Matt Smith's Doctor, and I get that they were probably trying to make him seem more alien by not understanding the societal norms of human beings, but that approach to it just feels... weird and out of character for the Eleventh Doctor.
Great list man. Though I can't say for sure how I'd rank them without a re-watch, I wouldn't put Series 8 as rock bottom. My interest was waning after Matt's departure but Capaldi's first batch of episodes really worked for me, Deep Breath and Listen especially.
I did make a really stupid comment based misunderstanding what you were saying based on what other people were saying, but I realise that it was stupid, my list does vary a lot from yours, but your opinions are fairly well backed up. Overall a decent video.
"Strong episodes in the mix like Dinosaurs on a spaceship and the power of three" - excuse me, what? Out of the 10 worst episodes (specials included), of the first 8 seasons, those two would both be on the last. They were thematically garbage, had no tension whatsoever, no character development despite great opportunities for it and also made simply no sense if you think about them for more than two seconds. I specifically said first 8 seasons though, because while parts of the later seasons were good, if we go by the worst episodes on their own out of all seasons, you kinda have to make your worst 25 almost entirely of season 9-12 (with some very well known exceptions of course)
Ranking series' 8-10 as worse than series 11 is one of the most baffling viewspoints I've ever heard, but I can't lie I love that you can get a completely different ranking depending on who you ask.
I do think series 8-9 are worse than 11, mostly because 11 had better on average episodes, series 8 didn't have a truly great episode while series 9 only had one ("Heaven Sent"), series 11 had three ("Rosa", "Demons of the Punjab" and "It Takes you Away" I actually thought series 10 was better than 11 overall, series 11 on average was slightly worse than series 10.
Yeah. Gotta say, I definitely respect the effort and the passion in this project, but I really perceive some huge differences in our feelings and thoughts. I feel like I watched a different show. 8-10 sit above every other season for me here except 1.
Series 10 aside, the Twelfth Doctor era was the culmination of all the bad qualities of Steven Moffat's (in my opinion) increasingly declining writing reaching its lowest point. After Series 8, I thought the Doctor had become an asshole, and after Series 9, I actually felt like the show had gone completely off the rails. Series 10 was by no means perfect, but it did feel like Steven Moffat has screwed his head back on correctly. Series 11 was a breath of fresh air to me. The new approach, new Doctor, new showrunner, and the decision to soft-reboot the series and gradually reintroduce older elements as if we were seeing them from the fam's perspective. Like Mr TARDIS, I do agree that Series 11 is objectively better, but Series 12 and the retcons made to the Doctor's past actually feel like a bold and exciting change that could make for some interesting and compelling stories if they really explore it.
I have never seen a season ranking that conflicted so heavily with my own. I respect that people have different opinions but I was getting irrationally angry within the first few rankings.
My series 1) Season 4 2) Season 2 3) Season 10 4) Season 9 5) Season 8 6) Season 3 7) Season 1 8) Season 5 9) Season 6 10) Season 12 11) Season 11 12) Season 7 Note: I have changed this list due to rewatching the show and rethinking how I ranked the seasons
Series 8 and 9 were depressingly, soul-crushingly mean-spirited and contained more stupid and embarrassing moments on their own than the rest of the show before or since. Series 10 was a slight return to form with better companions, but Series 11 and 12 were the breath of fresh air that the show needed after the worst of Steven Moffat's scripts. This is coming from someone who loves Series 5 and 6 and considers Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor to be the best incarnation of the character.
I can't emotionally connect with anyone in series 11. 13th seems like the Doctor the least interested in having companions but gets three baffled idiots.
Of course there’s gonna be a difference between everyone’s lists but series 8... at the bottom... below the dumpster fire of season 11 and the slightly sightly better 12?!
I respect your opinion, but I disagree. While Series 7 was considerably worse than Series 5 and 6, I still felt like the magic of the early Eleventh Doctor's run hadn't completely ebbed away. Series 8 was a lot more mean-spirited by comparison, and I felt like the Doctor had genuinely become unlikable. I get why some people are drawn to a more aggressively antisocial Doctor, but I personally feel like the writing went too far in portraying him as an asshole. Just my thoughts.
For me clara seemed a bit lost at first in series 8. She was mainly a plot device in series 7 and so i feel like once the mystery was solved there wasn't a lot to fall back on. Danny was maybe there to give her something else but their relationship kind of felt forced
That's exactly what I was thinking lol. He was like "there were some standout episodes like Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and The Power of Three by Chris Chibnal..." and I was like "... series 11 and 12 are gonna be a lot higher up than I would place them, huh?"
12 was indeed better, but 11 had set the bar pretty low. Most of the improvement was in development of the characters -- particularly Jodie's Doctor and Yas. But the stories were still messy and disjointed, and the plot arcs, while interesting at first, ultimately didn't pay off in any satisfying way.
Geoff Trowbridge there was definitely some series 12 episode that were just horrible like orphan 55 and the plastic one and can you here me, but all together so much better than Series 11
But they never established it before hand. One episode before she’s a nanny, and then all of a sudden she’s a teacher. They could’ve at least have had her mention in series 7 that she wanted to be a teacher.
@@nickchavarria8052 sure, but it feels pretty unlikely to me that Clara could go from being good with kids to being a fully qualified teacher with a full time position without Ever bringing up her aspirations to the Doctor.
I spent a lot of time thinking “so it’s series 11 next, right?” But when you finally, talked about it you gave a good argument which elevated some of my thoughts a bit - I just rank 8-10 much higher
The "good argument" being, "it's about time a woman played the Doctor. Having no overarching story made it better because I say so, and people used to all do bad things, but now were morally superior to our ancestors so we should say so, and if that p#sses off the stupid people that's a good sign." Well, if that sways you, more power to you. Good luck with that, mate.
I would probably swap series 10 and 11, I just wasn’t all that engaged with 11, I’m not someone who thinks it was “too pc” or “pushing an agenda”, I just really enjoyed series 10, maybe it’s because 8 and 9 made me disillusioned with the show and series 10 brought me back and made me love Doctor Who again, series 11 just didn’t engage me in the right way, but I’m also glad you enjoyed it, it’s nice to hear someone talk about it positively for a change.
Thank you I am out range with season 8 wasn't that bad is well to crap of season 11 it was so bad I cried only thing keep me going was there had a good master that season he carry season I think 3rd season of jodie sad was only really good written remember made dalrk look like a 1970 dalrk toy not even kidding have look other dalrk had new years Resolution to go thing
For pepol just here to listen the music : Series 1 : 45:22 Series 2 : 27:44 Series 3 : 49:42 Series 4 : 54:39 Series 5 : 40:52 Series 6 : 36:52 Series 7 : 7:26 Series 8 : 2:25 Series 9 : 12:22 Series 10 : 22:30 Series 11 : 31:52 Series 12 : 17:04
For all of the mediocre episodes there were in both series, at least series 2 redeemed itself with an awesome 2 part finale. Series 11 did not do this at all.
Best to worst (in my opinion): 1: Series 4. Near perfection. The Doctor and Donna are just the best, the episode quality is incredible, the music classic Gold, the story arc immersive, Series 4 is New Who at its best. Favourites include Partners in Crime (funniest ep ever), The Fires Of Pompeii (Harrowing as hell), Planet Of The Ood and The Unicorn And The Wasp (both among Who's most underrated), Silence In The Library (dark, atmospheric, one of Moffat's best), Turn Left/The Stolen Earth and Journey's End (absolute chills throughout all three, especially Turn Left, probably DW's darkest story) and of course, Midnight. Midnight is just... Wow. So yeah, Pinnacle Who. 2: Series 1. Yep, don't skip Nine. Nine is a hell of a Doctor, all of his stories are brilliant on some level, and the Immortal Trio of Dalek, The Empty Child and Bad Wolf mark his era as one of Doctor Who's best. Don't forget the underrated Father's Day or the gloriously terrifying Unquiet Dead. Seriously, this is such a strong start to the Revival and the only season strong enough to vy for first place, aside from above. 3: Series 3. Hard one to judge. It has its ups and downs, downs being Daleks in New York, CGI Lazarus monstrosities and Sun-possessed, but even those weaker eps have plenty of merits in their own right. High points are next level though, the magnificent Master reveal, the entirety of Blink, Human Nature/The Family Of Blood, forever my favourite piece of New Who. This season might be imperfect but it's a winner. 4: Series 5. Easily Moffat's best season. Over half the season is fantastic, a new Doctor and era, everything feels fresh, inventive, brimming with creativity. While it's not perfect, I genuinely don't think there's any stories here I dislike. Strong on nostalgia points as well. 5: Series 2. Not amazingly consistent, but for every clunker, there's two solid eps here. Not a fervent Ten/Rose shipper myself, but it's not as prominent as a lot of people make it out to be. Honestly, this season's merits boil down to its Sycorax starters, tragic Girl In The Fireplace, the overwhelming finale, and my two faves: School Reunion and the devilishly excellent Impossible Planet/Satan Pit. RTD is still my favourite New Who showrunner. 6: Series 10. Moffat did good on his last season. While there's less stand-outs, the consistency of the season is astonishing and seeing Bill develop with 12 is a delight. Nardole and Missy are brill too, and World Enough And Time is a strong candidate for my favourite Capaldi story. 7: Series 6. Interesting premise to frame a season over, even if the first half is a lot stronger than the second. The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, The Doctor's Wife and the hellishly underrated God Complex are all worthy Who. 8: Series 7. A toss-up of quality in general, but a solid variety of stories, one of the few benefits of constantly using one-part structure. The Angels Take Manhattan, The Crimson Horror and The Name of the Doctor are a few gems. 9: Series 9. Apart from the Ashildr two-parter and Sleep No More, fairly enjoyable on the whole. Just a shame that the majesty of Heaven Sent was crushed by the following finale. 10: Series 8. A bit dry, but Flatline and Mummy On The Orient Express are two of my favourite Capaldis. 11/12: Series 11 & 12. They're both just abysmal.
For me: 4 or 5 at the top depending on my mood, then 1, 10, 3, 2, 9, 6, 8, 7, and 12 with 11 at the bottom. But none of these except for the bottom 3 were actually bad--just varying degrees of good.
Pretty much gotta agree with your list! Definitely prefer 1 in second and 3 in third over their original rankings. But they are close, school reunion and professor Yana's reveal are so good!
My series 1) Season 4 2) Season 2 3) Season 10 4) Season 9 5) Season 8 6) Season 12 7) Season 3 8) Season 1 9) Season 5 10) Season 6 11) Season 11 12) Season 7 Yes even though I despise Season 11 for it's terrible writing I still would rather watch it, than watch Season 7 The only reason Season 12 is so high is because of 13th doctor & this season had better episodes...but I still hate Fugitive of the judoon and timeless children because it ruins EVERYTHING. Apparently Ruth is pre Hartnell, which is dumb, no one should be pre Hartnell! Timeless Children literally DESTROYED over 50 years of canon!!!!!!!!!! Also how did the Master destroy gallifrey when a entire Dalek army couldn't????
While series 7 was quite weak, I’m still glad it gave us the Rings of Akhaten, with Matt Smith giving one of the strongest performances of any Who in his sacrifice speech. My favourite moment of the show actually.
That season to me had some of the best premises from the show ever, but I felt like the endings were all very rushed. They all needed about 10 more minutes.
I'm pleased that he liked it but I'm pretty insulted that he called those of us who didn't "white supremacists". Sure, there have been some people with that agenda jumping on the bandwagon but they certainly don't represent me.
It just seems cliché in the fan base to hate the Chibnall era, (unlike, say, the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy). I personally like this era anyway. So it's refreshing to find fans as well.
@@alexpotts6520 the same. I'm glad he liked it, but that comment was very insulting. I know for me - to be blunt, the 13th doctor killed any interest i had left in the series, and even when i do tend to go back and re-watch even the ones that was a struggle for me ( Capaldi - and it's not even his fault, I can't even with Clara and River, after having to deal with 11-Amy-River), everything that i loved through series 1 through 6, relatively enjoyed through 7-8, got through 9-10, was simply gone by 11, and simply destroyed in series 12 especially with that episode the Timeless Children. It was interesting to hear positive thoughts about it (because i mean, different strokes for different folks, and it's what makes life interesting - i like a lot of episodes, people tend to not like) but i wouldn't throw out rude overarching insults to people who didn't agree with me.
@@lapniappe "I wouldn't throw out rude overarching insults to people who disagreed with me". You must be new to the Internet then. Oh boy, you've got a lot to learn...
Absolutely do not agree with your rankings, however, I respect the massive amount of work, reasoning and thought you have put into this. Opinions will always differ on every episode, story, arc & series, but what's important is that Doctor Who continues to bring joy to the people who watch it.
I also dislike "Death in Heaven", however I wouldn't interpret it as giving every deceased character in DW a horrible afterlife. Missy herself says she spread paranoia about death among the rich. That doesn't necessarily mean the whole story about the afterlife was invented by her, but to me it is enough reason to assume that.
I remember being “…meh” with Boomtown when first watching it, but it’s been one of my all-time faves on subsequent rewatches. I dunno… if the Doctor is facing consequences, I eat. it. up. Lmao
@@unclegumbald989 Boomtown is a good example of a meh episode that did something new and interesting we hadn't seen before on Who, with the Doctor taking a deeper dive with a literal sitdown with the villain. At least all of the weaker episodes that season did similar new and interesting things at some point.
“Many people cried the self too sleep that night when rose got trapped in that parallel universe, but me I was punching the air in celebration”. Okayyy i get you have your own opinion but that is offensive😂
Tom Rose I had the same response at the end of The Angels Take Manhattan. Karen Gillan is a great actress but the show was too focused on the companion.
I felt the same. There were some raised eyebrows when Billies casting was announced, but she quickly proved to be quite brilliant. But by mid s2 the whole “will they/won’t they” thing got tiresome and I felt it was time for Rose to go. When Rose was sent into Pete’s World I felt a sense of relief. Donna’s departure was by far more the most emotional, not least because of Bernard Cribbin’s reaction.
Why? It perfectly sums up my reaction in a nutshell. I liked Rose in series 1, although there are companions I prefer (Donna and Martha) but for some reason she just became so annoying in series 2. It wasn't just the stupid, completely unbelievable romance, but it's like her personality just changed.
His ranking: 12. Series 8 11. Series 7 10. Series 9 9. Series 12 8. Series 10 7. Series 2 6. Series 11 5. Series 6 4. Series 5 3. Series 1 2. Series 3 1. Series 4
Agreed on both counts. Objectively speaking, there was more of a consistent quality to the Russel T Davies era, and Series 7 had some real stinkers, but the highs of the Eleventh Doctor's run were just higher enough that I end up loving his run more. It helped that Matt Smith's enthusiasm and energy made even some of the worst episodes at least somewhat watchable, for me.
@@harryvideoz8863 was bearable until the ending which was ridiculous and anybody who defends it it's trying to blindly defend it. Jodie's acting is one again flat
SilverStormShadow my top four would go: 3 1 2 4 (Admitting that nostalgia plays a huge role for me). But otherwise I agree with this list entirely! Good shit mate
I love how you like more of Doctor Who than the reviewers UA-cam often suggests to me. Their pessimism often ruins the show for me retroactively, mostly because I am increasingly getting afraid of them hating on the show too much / enough for it to get cancelled.
I'm there with you. Mr. TARDIS has been the shining light of positivity/genuine criticism that has prevented me from disengaging with the fanbase completely, amidst the bile and hatred that fans and non-fans alike have thrown at Jodie Whitaker and Chris Chibnal.
Criticism is part of the show I'm afraid. It deserves to be cancelled at this stage. It's like saying 'don't tell me to put my dog down because there's a tiny bit of hope it'll survive'. The show is so bad now and with the finale being so terrible for the shows lore it needs to go before Chibs tries to kill more of it with his SJW bullshit. The show is being hated on and criticised because it's terrible, and saying positive things when it's simply not true isn't in the best interests of the show. They're revising channels, their job is to be honest. I left Doctor WHO ages ago because it was awful, and I'd rather it die now before they ruin it's history even more. Chibs will find more ways to stuff his agenda into it more.
@@DalekTheSupreme positivity? The show doesn't get it because it doesn't deserve it. Not everything can be positive I'm afraid. People give it so much negativity because in their opinion it's terrible.
@@HarvesterYT Because Doctor Who has never been progressive before 2018. Because the previous season didn't have a companion who was a lesbian. Because the show wasn't initially run by a woman. Because a gay man definitely didn't direct the first episode. Speaking as someone who grew up with Doctor Who all his life, both Classic and New, I'm more invested in the series and enjoying it more than I have since Matt Smith was the Doctor. I'm not going to make some grand statement about what everyone thinks about the Thirteenth Doctor and create 20 alternate accounts to "prove" my point, I am just going to give my honest opinion.
@@DalekTheSupreme I have to say, i haven't watched more than like 3 episodes of Jodie, but what I noticed was the older series like the 10th Dr seasons and 9th, they had agendas that they added in the story, they showed rather than told, and it didn't feel so forced or preachy even if there was a bit of it. The stories were told really well and the characters really shined and grew, you connected with them. In the few episodes I saw of Jodie, it was all talk, all preach not as much growth or development, i couldn't care for the characters in those few episodes as I did for rose Martha Donna any and Rory 9, 10 and 11 within the first 15mins of seeing them. I may not have given enough of a chance for them, and any good episode I hear about in jodies I'm willing to see, but I'm not watching every episode of hers esspecially with the timeless children and that orphan episode, if I remember correctly. I want to support the good writing. Also I did like Bill, my only issue with her was having her remind us she was gay every 10 mins (exaggeration I know) but after the 5th time it was like so what? I get it, my opinion of you hasn't changed, but if you keep repeating yourself, it might, it would have been more entertaining if she pretended to ignore men flirting at her, dismiss it or flat out not even notice it. Like a guy flirts, she thinks he's just a friend, because if you're not attracted to someone who is attracted to you, you're less likely to notice the signs, vice versa you tend to think a simple hi means love. So you could also add her flirting to a girl the girl is friendly back and she overthinks. Other than that she was fun, and her last episodes really were emotional Dr who has always been progressive and I admire this, but it's the format and how that progression is told in a story that matters most to me
I agree about Series 3. It was the series that made me love the show, and episode-by-episode I think it's my favourite. But series 4 really refined what series 3 started and is an absolute masterpiece.
nah Donna is better Martha is litterally loved struck girl like rose it just made her look bad she started off intelligent and great but then she turned into a love struck puppy and I rolled my eyes very time she showed interest in the doctor.
Just to emphasize how good the second half of season 4 was, I literally got a little emotional when you played "The best story never told" over the clips of those episodes.
“i don’t know if steven moffat fell down a hole as a child, because with series 8 he seems to have an abject phobia of depth” is by far the best thing i’ve ever heard
Hell Bent was actually a great episode though, so there's no need. Capaldi himself even called it one of his favourite finales of the show, if not his favourite period.
@@thepandorica1660 Agreed. I've heard the issues some people have with Hell Bent, but those things don't bother me. It's not at the same level as Heaven Sent - what is? - but I've always really enjoyed it.
I rewatched all of new who recently and I never realised that the doctor overly mean to micky. It blew my mind and made micky one of my favourite characters because in the parallel world 2 parter he was really relatable and went out on his own terms i guess. I prefer micky to rose now.... Edit: i am just realising that my top 5 are martha jack mickey bill and donna. I have cried over all of them.... I am now dead inside
Your retrospectives on series 3 and 4 (and for 5 and 6 to a lesser extent) were very evocative for me. As someone who was discovering his love for the programme at a young age, it's hard to properly put into words how I felt during when they were being aired. I do feel blessed to be one of the many millions to have watched those series when they were coming out, the show really was something else.
@Luka Macdonald my comment is a reference to the fact Adam Michelle has appeared in Big Finish. The Ninth Doctor Chronicles third story, The Other Side is set between Dalek and The Long Game! They even got Bruno Langley back for the role. I worded my previous comment as to not spoile the surprise when you look it up. But now I can see that it come off as being smug, and for that I apologise! Hope this clears it up?
@@McEdam He's correcting you for using your instead of you're and that's why he's calling you an uneducated mong. Nothing to do with the fact he thought you were wrong about Adam Michelle being on Big Finish *face palm*
@@ihateunicorns867 there's like 1 awful episode in the form of in the forest of the night and 1 meh in the form of kill the moon. The rest range from decent to truly great. You've got episodes like flatline, mummy on the orient express, listen, time heist, dark water, just to name a few.
D_Wigz Robot of Sherwood is truly great? Into the Dalek? Flatline is the best episode from that series and it’s quite good at best. It doesn’t hold up to the best episode from every other series.
I love your opinion of Nine! i just smiling all the way through just because eccleston is an absolutely incredible actor, to me his thirteen episodes felt like two whole seasons. Eccleston and Capaldi are always going to be my Doctors just because of the serious sides but the fun sides to him, to me Ten was always very sad and angry apart from a small time, and eleven was a very excitable child with a very sad side but.. twelve is amazing but nine got me into it and he will always be my favourite
Its difficult to do a top 12 for me so I'm just going to cut it to five. 1. Series 4- Modern Who at it's peak. Not a single bad episode for me. 2. Series 1- Grossly underrated, features great stories like Dalek and the Empty child two parter. I feel some people give it shit due to the outdated cgi and jokes. And Eccleston still remains my 2nd favourite modern Doctor. 3. Series 5- What a great soft reboot. This series while piggy backing of the previous era still remained fresh and fun, with a great, mysterious story arc. 4. Series 3- Very solid. The opener was good and it features some of the best stories in the 2nd half of the series. Though I thought Last of the Time Lords was a very lacklustre finale. 5. Series 2- I know a lot of people give this season shit but I completely agree with you, when it hits, it crushes. The Satan two parter still remains one of my favourites
So much of how someone ranks these series is dependent on what one considers important. For example, for me Capaldi's acting puts his worst series ahead of either of Whittaker's series with it's failings in writing and congested Tardis.
1. Series 1 (astonishing work, some of the best episodes in the entire revived era) 2. Series 4 (lots of people already defended this series for me) 3. Series 5 (began at a turbulent period, criticism completely silenced halfway through) 4. Series 3 (martha ftw) 5. Series 10 (i needed to love this show again after so many missteps, moffat had the last laugh) 6. Series 2 (strong start, 10 and Rose and the era's low points drag it down) 7. Series 9 (no middle ground, everything masterful or total shit) 8. Series 8 (spends a brand-new doctor becoming 'the clara show', this would've worked as his second series) 9. Series 12 (sure, better than 11 but that's easy to accomplish) 10. Series 6 (strong start, but resolution made it ultimately empty) 11. Series 11 (the first female doctor deserved *SO* much more than this) 12. Series 7 (i feel like we all gave this a pass because it was the 50th anniversary year)
Really enjoyed this video. Personally series 11 is bottom of the list for me but I’m eager to rewatch it again now after listening to your thoughts. And about series 4, that 5 amazing episode run...just hearing you speak about it gave me goosebumps.
Holy moly you just made me realise that Series 1 always had a story set within the vicinity and on Earth... that's so devastating to realise that right now.
Real Talk: The changes to the Doctor's origins in Series 9 are way worse and have much bigger implications on the Doctor as a character than the Timeless Child.
so i was immediately put off my series 8 being at the bottom... but the quality of this video is amazing. absolutely loved how detailed it was! thank u
1. Series 5: phenomenal start to Moffat's tenure; the best depiction of the Eleventh Doctor, perfect debuts from Smith, Gillan and Darvill, a wonderful fairytale atmosphere, a great story arc, and a strong run of episodes including The Eleventh Hour, Amy's Choice, Vincent and the Doctor, and the epic yet intimate finale 2. Series 4: David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the best Doctor-companion pairing in the revival, Russell and his team of writers at the peak of their confidence and creativity, a bold and ambitious finale, Murray Gold's best soundtrack for the show, and a fantastic guest cast 3. Series 1: Christopher Eccleston hits the ground running, and makes the Ninth Doctor feel instantly likeable and compelling. Billie Piper makes a strong debut as Rose, and her relationship with the Doctor feels natural and emotionally justified. Classic episodes like Dalek, Father's Day and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, and a good establishment of Russell's vision for the show, series 1 was the perfect way to relaunch the show for a new audience 4. Series 3: this series sees Tennant come into his own as the adventurous and often egotistical Tenth Doctor, paired opposite Martha, easily the most underrated companion. A strong first half builds up to a phenomenal second half, featuring Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Blink, and an epic finale that reintroduces the Master in a fantastic gripping way. The finale does drop the ball somewhat, but we still have a very strong run here 5. Series 10: Capaldi leaves on a high note here, being paired opposite Bill and Nardole and making up a very strong TARDIS team. There is a big mid-series slump with the Monk trilogy, but the first half features some strong and underrated episodes, and the second half features an interesting character arc for Missy that ultimately leads to a fantastic finale that gives the Cybermen the story they deserved (FINALLY) and sees off Capaldi perfectly (if one ignores Twice Upon a Time) 6. Series 12: a decent story arc that gives Whittaker the chance to settle into the role of the Doctor, an introduction to the best modern incarnation of the Master, and some really strong episodes, including Fugitive of the Judoon, The Haunting of Villa Diodati and the highly underrated Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror. Unfortunately, the TARDIS team still feels overstuffed, and a few of series 11's problems continue to persist. However, it is a marked improvement on its predecessor 7. Series 9: bit of a mixed bag. Under the Lake/Before the Flood, Face the Raven and Heaven Sent are strong episodes, bolstered by a pair of great lead performances from Capaldi and Coleman. Unfortunately, we also have a frustratingly messy opener, a missed opportunity in Sleep No More, and the car crash finale of Hell Bent. The series is well-structured and has some really strong elements, but it also suffers from a very weak story arc 8. Series 8: another real mixed bag of a series. Story quality is generally decent, though there are some big clunkers (Kill the Moon and In the Forest of the Sh*te). Capaldi is excellent, and Clara is given the chance to develop as a character. Unfortunately, the finale is very mediocre, and the Clara/Danny subplot drags down a lot of the series as a whole 9. Series 2: suffers from fairly similar problems to series 11. A bland and underdeveloped Doctor that wastes the talent of its lead actor, paired with a companion who often comes across as quite insufferable. A generally underwhelming quality of stories, an overly childish tone, and a lack of an interesting story arc. Tennant's debut series does pull ahead of Whittaker's largely thanks to a few standout episodes like School Reunion, The Girl in the Fireplace and The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit 10. Series 6: a strong first half with an interesting story arc, a great TARDIS team, and strong episodes like The Doctor's Wife and A Good Man Goes to War. Unfortunately, the second half is weaker, as the stories become less interesting (with a few exceptions), River takes up too much focus, and the arc becomes convoluted and builds to a very unsatisfying conclusion 11. Series 11: just feels really bland and generic. There's not much of a sense of direction for the series, and it lacks its own distinctive feel compared to the previous eras. The main characters feel quite bland, and the quality of stories feels quite weak, though there are a few exceptions (Rosa, Demons of the Punjab, It Takes You Away and Resolution) 12. Series 7: series 11 was bland and disappointing, but series 7 was so bad it nearly got me to stop watching altogether (thank God for Day of the Doctor). The Rings of Akhaten was pretty good, Amy and Rory's departure had a lot of emotional weight, and there are a few fun episodes, but in general the story quality ranged from mediocre to outright atrocious, Eleven gets flanderized beyond all recognition, and Clara makes a thoroughly unsatisfying debut. The absolute nadir of the revival, and let's hope it stays that way
Used to be my least favourite for a while, before series 10 and the rest came. After rewatching it, I do like it more, but I felt like Clara was just there for too long. I never liked her character and her attitude, which reminded me of Rose without the romantic part. Series 9 had good stories, and Heaven Sent which is ofc one of the best episodes ever. But generally I didn't like the overall mood, complex and dramatic atmosphere. Twelve had enourmous improvement but the sonic sunglasses and guitar things were a bit over the top. But compared to how the show is now, series 9 is actually quite good lmao
What a great video, thank you. I happen to agree 90% with your choices, but besides that your descriptions are magnificent. The way you described the finale of series 1 is the way I've always felt but could not put in such beautiful words
If you want proof that series 4 is the best, all you have to do is look at the dialogue. For example, this always breaks my heart: DOCTOR: “I just want you to know there are worlds out there, safe in the sky because of her. That there are people living in the light, and singing songs of Donna Noble, a thousand million light years away. They will never forget her, while she can never remember. And for one moment, one shining moment, she was the most important woman in the whole wide universe.” SYLVIA: “She still is. She's my daughter.” DOCTOR: “Then maybe you should tell her that once in a while.”
Series 4 isn't great way to comedic also bad episodes partners in crime, doctors daughter, midnight, next doctor, waters of mars, end of time part 1 & 2 just to name a few

My top 11 Modern Who seasons are: 1. Series 9 - I personally found Series 9 to be the best season of Modern Era, and is certainly both Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi's best season overall. We see both Capaldi and Jenna Coleman at their best with Capaldi finally coming into his own as Twelve and it was this particular season that made him my personal favourite Doctor alongside Tom Baker. Clara was allowed to shine alongside Capaldi to create a perfect Doctor/companion duo, plus her exit in 'Face the Raven' was beautifully handled. This season also had a lot of great stories with plenty of twists and epic moments that stayed with me long after I had watched them with some being my personal favourites of all time like 'The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar', 'Face the Raven' and obviously 'Heaven Sent'. Also, bringing back the two-parter format worked perfectly for, IMO. While I personally found 'Hell Bent' deeply flawed, I didn't think it was the worst episode in Doctor Who history, plus 'Sleep No More' was just passable at best for me. 2. Series 5 3. Series 4 4. Series 1 5. Series 8 6. Series 10 7. Series 3 8. Series 12 9. Series 2 10. Series 6 11. Series 7 12. Series 11
Series 10 is on top of my personal list of Doctor Who Seasons. I adore Oxygen and World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls so much that I wanted to watch them over the last two months again but I just couldn't because they were so good that I was afraid to be drawn into them too much. Seriously, if a you are afraid to meet the Cybermen again, you know the Quality of your episodes! That *pain* lines were so haunting that this alone gives me chills. I somehow only don't like Knock Knock and I can't say why...Maybe because, when I started watching it I had just moved into an Apartment to live on my own for the first time and the fear of being taken in your own home makes me not liking that, I don't know.
@Tolstoy111 Just because the majority doesn't like it doesn't mean someone can't have a different opinion. Personally, I enjoyed most of Chibnalls era, and I found season 8 and 9 the two worst seasons of New who (I don't think season 8 is bad it decent but season 9 is terrible)
Ok, I'm on the 11th choice and, well I had more fun with that series than series 9, so probs would put series 9 below it, but in hindsight I do sorta realise that series 7 didn't have many standout episodes.

So glad to see s11 so high up and s7 so far down. However, I have no idea what s8 is doing down at bottom when it obviously is among the top 5. Lovely video!
Never would’ve even acknowledged this ranking if it weren’t for your explanations and justifications. They’re very compelling, and I actually feel like my ranking has changed since viewing this video. I’m not sure I’d be able to put them all at different levels, so I prefer tier-lists. S: Series 1, 4, 9, 10 A: Series 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 12 B: Series 7, 8
Thing is, this is very well reviewed mate. And I like the fact you watched the Russel T Davies era when it came out as did I. But you've really underrated series 2. Watching them when it came out sure was epic. The best episodes are SO good & imo more memorable than series 4.
Also, your name check to Murray Gold. Class man, utter class. I don't agree with the list. But this review was really well thought out. (Rose Tyler is easily the best companion though for the time and to revamp the show).
When I saw series 10 so low (I'm a HUGE fan of series 10, I adore Capaldi and Bill so much) I thought, "OK, fine, I guess it's not as good as series 1, 3, and 4" lol... This is why I watch this channel and love it so much. Also, I will say, the main lesson I got from this video is that Doctor Who has some amazing music in it. and that the show makes me cry
also- I totally was one of those "series 11 sucks!" people but actually I like this take on it, it was quite good as a series of standalone episodes and good historicals. Series 10 is still better, in my eyes, though
I'd personally have these in a different order (though exactly what I can't say right now) but I can't argue the reasoning at all, as always a great video, insightful, well thought out, and well edited. Frankly this is a fantastic video and gave me new perspective on each series both the ones I hate and the ones I love. Kedp up the great work man! Just wish I had the cash to become a patron!
I’m glad to see some love for series six as despite some very glaring issues there is a hell of a lot to admire this series even in the arc which is horribly executed yes but clearly comes from a passion to tell a unique story. But I also love how thematically series 6 matches series 5. If series 5 is like a fairytale with the execution of a dream half remembered like you said then series 6 comes off like some delirious childhood bad dream. In a good way. Although for me as a kid these episode gave me nightmares as I don’t think we’ve had this many back to back horror episodes since the Hinchcliffe era. Intentionally or not I found and still find the girl who waited’s sterile and emotionless setting is creepy and unsettling. Maybe it’s just nostalgia but series 6 is still incredibly special to me.
My rankings, best to worst- 1. Series 5- My series. Matt Smith is my favourite Doctor and this is just Who at its best. The story arc is beautifully put together and wonderfully handled. The characters are endearing, the fairy tale nature of the narrative is just joyous... I have very little fault with this series. Victory of the Daleks is a bit weak but that's about it really. Vincent and the Doctor, Amy's Choice, The Big Bang, Hungry Earth... hit after hit after hit 2. Series 4- The crown jewel of RTD's era. Tennant and Tate's chemistry are off the wall and Donna is still to this day the finest companion of the revival, unlikely to ever be beaten. The run of episodes from Silence in the Library to Stolen Earth is perhaps unmatched in Doctor Who history and the rest of the series isn't too shabby either aside from The Doctor's Daughter but when that's the ONLY even remotely subpar episode we have a great series on our hands. 3. Series 1- It's very hard to rank the next few. Eccleston's sole series is the perfect reintroduction of the show, with a very grounded, human touch to a silly sci fi show that really helped humanise the mythos. A magnificent story arc that unfolds more like a mini-series than the monster of the week show we're used to, Series 1 is near perfect. Even weaker episodes like World War Three and The Long Game have an edge to them and it's such a fascinating little era of the show with a breathtaking finale. 4. Series 3- I don't know what exactly puts this one slightly lower down but it's perhaps because Last of the Time Lords gets a bit too ridiculous towards the end. Other than that, another near perfect run of episodes. I've come to appreciate the Dalek two parter immensly and because of that I now believe there are no bad stories in this series. With an underrated companion, some of RTD's finest work and a definite sense of change and maturity from the previous series, this is a damn great series. 5. Series 6- Probably so high up here because of nostalgia but damn this series is underrated! When it's good, Series 6 is Who at its best- The God Complex is still my all time favourite Doctor Who story of all time. The ambition of this series cannot be understated, with a spectacular opener and mid-season finale, episodes full of high concept storytelling and ambition and a never better Matt Smith who tackles the darker material with ease. Probably the peak of Moffat's ambitions. 6. Series 10- Twice Upon a Time retroactively made this series sour in my eyes but upon rewatch, it's great. The Monk trilogy is disappointingly shit (Extremis is good but Lie of the Land is one of the worst written scripts ever) but it's made up for with a spectacular finale and a series that felt fresh and fun. Bill and Nardole were both revelations, we finally got scripts that allowed Capaldi to stand on his own as the character and there's Oxygen which is peak Who. Great stuff 7. Series 12- This is an interesting series. I really enjoy it, but no episode really blows me away. The CYHM/Haunting/Ascension triple bill comes close but then The Timeless Children, whilst great on a worldbuilding and lore front kinda disappoints in other aspects. The lack of standalones hurt this series, but it was consistently enjoyable, with Jodie Whittaker and Sacha Dhawan creating probably one of my favourite Doctor/Master duos. It's great, but perhaps too recent to really let me appreciate it yet. 8. Series 2- Teething problems. So inconsistent compared to the other RTD seasons, and Rose is quite insufferable. There are multiple stand out classics here like School Reunion, the Beast two parter, Girl in the Fireplace and I am a sucker for the finale, but it's not quite as refined. I don't think L&M is THAT bad other than Peter Kay but this series feels a bit cheaper, a bit sillier and a bit more messy than its predecessor and successors. Still pretty good though. 9. Series 11- Three bloody brilliant episodes, including my second favourite DW story of all time (It Takes You Away) but like Series 2 it's a bit too inconsistent. Jodie's great, the production values are outstanding and the newness shines through but the standalone nature of the series harms it so much and the finale is so underwhelming. It has great highs but forgettable lows and a lot of it is just "OK". 10. Series 7- I actually think Part One is great. Asylum is a bit weak but the other four? Great. Things predictably go downhill as soon as Clara joins, with only Rings of Akhaten standing out. Sadly a lot of the issues the next two seasons would face begin here, from the Flanderisation of Smith's Doctor, needlessly pretentious and clever dialogue, rushed episodes and great premises gone to waste, most notably Hide and Journey. BUT, the Amy/Rory arc and the 50th make up for it. Big time 11. Series 9- Whilst this is probably the series that has the stuff I hate most from Moffat's Who (the embarassing characterisation for Capaldi, the stupid guitar, Clara, every bloody line of dialogue being too clever for its own good, the awful awful arc) the reason it's not at the bottom is simply due to the Whithouse two parter and Heaven Sent, both of which I cannot fault, as well as the Zygon speech despite that story suffering from Harness's lack of ability to write strong moral dilemmas. It's a bunch of self serious episodes that are made worse by a truly awful finale that is somehow worst in hindsight. 12. Series 8- If it wasn't for Jamie Matheison and (surprisingly) Time Heist, I would write this series off entirely. I don't mind a dark, angry bitter Doctor but at least make him resemble the character! Capaldi in this series plays a joyless grumpy bastard that changes from embarassing grandad to complete shithead episode to episode that in no way resembles the Doctor. Since when did the Doctor judge others for their past, hate soldiers and insult kids? Kill the Moon is the single worst piece of Doctor Who canon and In the Forest of the Night, The Caretaker and Death in Heaven aren't far behind. The worst series of New Who by a wide margin. Mummy/Flatline are too good for this mess.
My list: 1. Series 1 2. Series 4 3. Series 5 4. Series 10 5. Series 12 6. Series 3 7. Series 8 8. Series 2 9. Series 6 10. Series 9 11. Series 11 12. Series 7
Very very refreshing to see a ranking video like this that isn't just relentless Chibnall bashing. If I had the time and inclination I'd like to rewatch NuWho from start to finish. Series 1-5 was my childhood and I can remember these stories very well. Series 6 was a gargantuan letdown for me though, with Moffat massively overpromising and underdelivering in terms of marketing. After that I still watched the show but I had fallen out of love with it, making most of series 6-10 a blur for me. Series 11 had a lot of flaws but I liked the change of pace. Probably deserves a rewatch. And series 12 made be a fan again. On that note Series 12 is probably where I disagree the most, especially Fugitive of the Judoon which I rate as one of the best DW episodes ever. I agree with a lot of the criticisms but for me the highs overshadow the lows. I'd also rate series 6 significantly lower, but perhaps my disappointment at the time is warping my perspective and it deserves another more objective watch. Similarly I'd have series 2 lower. There were great moments but too many duds with Love and Monsters, Fear Her, and The Idiots Lantern, as well as the kinda 'meh' inclusion of the cybermen. In general I'd probably be more generous with the Capaldi era as well. And series 5 is up there with 4 as the best of Doctor Who IMO.
ME was the most interesting and non-developed character in the modern era. she had potential to be any role required for any story. she has perfect narrative potential, even able to take lead from the doctor with clever writing
s10 shouldn't have the blindness... too humanising with the clara love arc (the best love arc)... let me say of the modern era that capaldi is my favourite doctor but i also feel that most of his stories match matt smith's more family friendly doctor.
finally, someone who actually objectively looks at series 11 and 12 and doesnt immediately dismiss them by saying "boooo bad writing horrible!!!!!! CHIBNALL OUT!!!" nice list
I really like all calpaldis series. But this video got me thinking, I think I just liked Peter calpaldi... The grumpy cross doctor was great and I loved missy. I just never vibed with jodies episodes.. I can't sit through one without getting distracted or bored. Which is a shame because I do think she has potential
You layed out S11 very nicely in a way S12 has made me grateful for. The S8 portion WAS a challenge for my biased ass, but I wouldn't stick it out for many other UA-camrs!

MrTARDISreviews Can you also do a worst to best revival episodes so that I can make a judgement please?
As one should. It would be terrible, and frankly, boring, if we all had the same opinion! There should be diversity in all Things!
@@TheJovian16 Which of Jodies episodes would you consider great?

@@Noah-id7lu Yup. I thought S12 was much better than S11.

Alexander Augustus Aurelius Imagine unironically using the word “hack” in this context.
I actually thought series 8 was a slight improvement over 7
So do I. Capaldi and Coleman clicked from the get-go, and their chemistry in this, and the next Series, was superb.
@@DalekTheSupreme The Doctor was an asshole at first because the whole season was about finding who he was
Samuel Myth every season is about the doctor finding out - to a greater or less extent - who he is. That’s why it’s called doctor *who*
For me clara seemed a bit lost at first in series 8. She was mainly a plot device in series 7 and so i feel like once the mystery was solved there wasn't a lot to fall back on. Danny was maybe there to give her something else but their relationship kind of felt forced
Well, I disagree with almost everything you just said, I know I'm not going against the flow here but Jodie's season are in the bottom for me
Racist man.
Just because he doesn’t like series 11 + 12 doesn’t mean he’s racist!
Fascist
Just because season 12 had one of the worst episodes in doctor who doesn’t mean the whole thing is bad. Season 11 was the worst though it was boring.
Absolutely agree
All I can say is... Clearly you see something in Chris Chibnall's writing that I don't. He's absolutely dreadful and always has been.
Agreed
That's exactly what I was thinking lol. He was like "there were some standout episodes like Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and The Power of Three by Chris Chibnal..." and I was like "... series 11 and 12 are gonna be a lot higher up than I would place them, huh?"
Series 11 was horrible but series 12 was so much better
12 was indeed better, but 11 had set the bar pretty low. Most of the improvement was in development of the characters -- particularly Jodie's Doctor and Yas. But the stories were still messy and disjointed, and the plot arcs, while interesting at first, ultimately didn't pay off in any satisfying way.
Geoff Trowbridge there was definitely some series 12 episode that were just horrible like orphan 55 and the plastic one and can you here me, but all together so much better than Series 11
Clara being a school teacher was established in Day of The Doctor.
But they never established it before hand. One episode before she’s a nanny, and then all of a sudden she’s a teacher. They could’ve at least have had her mention in series 7 that she wanted to be a teacher.
Yeah it was less established as it was a thing that they had her as so they could get Coal Hill School in the 50th

@@callumdalton9560 it’s not a big stretch that she would take a job as a teacher too because of that
@@nickchavarria8052 sure, but it feels pretty unlikely to me that Clara could go from being good with kids to being a fully qualified teacher with a full time position without Ever bringing up her aspirations to the Doctor.
I spent a lot of time thinking “so it’s series 11 next, right?”
But when you finally, talked about it you gave a good argument which elevated some of my thoughts a bit - I just rank 8-10 much higher
8-10 isn’t even “bad” should be in the upper end of the list with season 9 and 10 being close to the top
The "good argument" being, "it's about time a woman played the Doctor. Having no overarching story made it better because I say so, and people used to all do bad things, but now were morally superior to our ancestors so we should say so, and if that p#sses off the stupid people that's a good sign."
Well, if that sways you, more power to you. Good luck with that, mate.
I totally disagree about your placement of Capaldi's seasons. They were great. Each to their own though.
Yeah, season 8 in last?
I personally didn’t like Capaldis doctor.
Well, I'll skip series 11 and 12 and you can skip series 8-10. Everyone wins!
This!
Know one talks about it positively because most people believe it's bad. This is shown by the rapid decline of viewers following season 11 and 12

Best to worst (in my opinion):
1: Series 4.
Agree with your last place. I'd put 7 in second last though.

Yes even though I despise Season 11 for it's terrible writing I still would rather watch it, than watch Season 7
The only reason Season 12 is so high is because of 13th doctor & this season had better episodes...but I still hate Fugitive of the judoon and timeless children because it ruins EVERYTHING.
Rings Of Akhaten is awesome isn’t it
I feel the exact same way
Also, Journey to The Centre of The Tardis is one of Smith's best and nobody can convince me otherwise.
That season to me had some of the best premises from the show ever, but I felt like the endings were all very rushed. They all needed about 10 more minutes.
I’m glad that series 11-12 was for someone at least, just not for most of the fan base. Definitely not for me.

Fundamentally disagree with putting s11 at 6. Not trying to be one of those people but it really was just bad and ended my interest in the show
I have the same opinion. Season 11 was so bad that I've stopped watching.
Same
It was abysmal. I felt like I was judging the show unfairly, so I started watching.
What drivel. Chibnall is awful.
preachy woke nonsense. are you sure you are not paid by the BBC?
I think this guy is just fan of David Tennant I disagree with his list
Absolutely do not agree with your rankings, however, I respect the massive amount of work, reasoning and thought you have put into this.
Opinions will always differ on every episode, story, arc & series, but what's important is that Doctor Who continues to bring joy to the people who watch it.
I also dislike "Death in Heaven", however I wouldn't interpret it as giving every deceased character in DW a horrible afterlife. Missy herself says she spread paranoia about death among the rich. That doesn't necessarily mean the whole story about the afterlife was invented by her, but to me it is enough reason to assume that.
She lies for fun more than any master so I can buy that
Every time I rewatch Series 1 it blows my mind how good it is
I remember being “…meh” with Boomtown when first watching it, but it’s been one of my all-time faves on subsequent rewatches.
GrilloTheFlightless I just miss when when doctor who was goad and in its prime
Tom Rose Alas, I wonder if we will ever see such times again.
Why? It perfectly sums up my reaction in a nutshell. I liked Rose in series 1, although there are companions I prefer (Donna and Martha) but for some reason she just became so annoying in series 2. It wasn't just the stupid, completely unbelievable romance, but it's like her personality just changed.
Series 11 and 12 should've been at the bottom

Daniel Henze highly agreed! You seem to have good opinions.
Favorite Doctor Matt Smith. He had HUGE shoes to fill and he nailed it. Favorite Doctor/Companion: DT & FA
I wouldn't rate S8-10 or S12 below S11, indeed I'd rank them more highly than S2 and S6.

Other than that she was fun, and her last episodes really were emotional
Dr who has always been progressive and I admire this, but it's the format and how that progression is told in a story that matters most to me
I agree about Series 3. It was the series that made me love the show, and episode-by-episode I think it's my favourite. But series 4 really refined what series 3 started and is an absolute masterpiece.
Wow season 8 at the bottom, that feels evil
Ikr
And hell yes to Martha Jones being called the best companion of the modern era!!! (For me she's a very, very close second behind Donna).
But even Yaz is better tho
@@mrmaclovin255 give me 3 good reasons why
Nah! Has to be Wilf! His scenes with Ten are incredible, poignant, and make my heart ache...
@@MrRjhyt That's fair - Wilf is a fantastic companion, too.

The 12th Doctor in the mini T.A.R.D.I.S. will always be hysterical. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just to emphasize how good the second half of season 4 was, I literally got a little emotional when you played "The best story never told" over the clips of those episodes.
It's funny how in the RTD era, the second two partner was the high point of every series.
@spiones2 good thing that the finales were the 3rd two parter of each series, and not the 2nd.
Last of the Time Lords was a weak finale IMO
“i don’t know if steven moffat fell down a hole as a child, because with series 8 he seems to have an abject phobia of depth” is by far the best thing i’ve ever heard
While that is quite funny, I don't understand it whatsoever. In terms of character building Series 8 is among the best series.

If Moffat apologised for Beast Below, where's the "I'm sorry" for Hell Bent
Brit Animations I don’t think he wants to open that can of worms.
Hell Bent was actually a great episode though, so there's no need. Capaldi himself even called it one of his favourite finales of the show, if not his favourite period.
Why would he need to apologise for writing a great episode?
@@thepandorica1660 Agreed. I've heard the issues some people have with Hell Bent, but those things don't bother me. It's not at the same level as Heaven Sent - what is? - but I've always really enjoyed it.
Better yet, where's the apology for Twice Upon a Time?
I rewatched all of new who recently and I never realised that the doctor overly mean to micky.
It blew my mind and made micky one of my favourite characters because in the parallel world 2 parter he was really relatable and went out on his own terms i guess.

I would have put series 8 last too. It’s awful. The Doctor is unlikeable and the stories are ridiculous and frankly boring.
Series 8 is a lot better than I remembered. Capaldi kills it and the finale is actually solid. Definitely deserves higher
Series 8 is garbo
I love your opinion of Nine! i just smiling all the way through just because eccleston is an absolutely incredible actor, to me his thirteen episodes felt like two whole seasons.
Eccleston and Capaldi are always going to be my Doctors just because of the serious sides but the fun sides to him, to me Ten was always very sad and angry apart from a small time, and eleven was a very excitable child with a very sad side but..
twelve is amazing but nine got me into it and he will always be my favourite
36:36 me when I find someone holding a 'Love and Monsters' DVD outside my door.
Honestly couldnt agree more with your list
So much of how someone ranks these series is dependent on what one considers important. For example, for me Capaldi's acting puts his worst series ahead of either of Whittaker's series with it's failings in writing and congested Tardis.
1. Series 1 (astonishing work, some of the best episodes in the entire revived era)
2. Series 4 (lots of people already defended this series for me)
3. Series 5 (began at a turbulent period, criticism completely silenced halfway through)
4. Series 3 (martha ftw)
5. Series 10 (i needed to love this show again after so many missteps, moffat had the last laugh)
6. Series 2 (strong start, 10 and Rose and the era's low points drag it down)
7. Series 9 (no middle ground, everything masterful or total shit)
8. Series 8 (spends a brand-new doctor becoming 'the clara show', this would've worked as his second series)
9. Series 12 (sure, better than 11 but that's easy to accomplish)
10. Series 6 (strong start, but resolution made it ultimately empty)
11. Series 11 (the first female doctor deserved *SO* much more than this)
Clara really outstayed her welcome after Series 7, she was only important for the half story arc.
Holy moly you just made me realise that Series 1 always had a story set within the vicinity and on Earth... that's so devastating to realise that right now.

It's god damn ironic that one of the best eps of S7 is Chibnall written.
so i was immediately put off my series 8 being at the bottom... but the quality of this video is amazing. absolutely loved how detailed it was! thank u
1. Series 5: phenomenal start to Moffat's tenure; the best depiction of the Eleventh Doctor, perfect debuts from Smith, Gillan and Darvill, a wonderful fairytale atmosphere, a great story arc, and a strong run of episodes including The Eleventh Hour, Amy's Choice, Vincent and the Doctor, and the epic yet intimate finale
2. Series 4: David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the best Doctor-companion pairing in the revival, Russell and his team of writers at the peak of their confidence and creativity, a bold and ambitious finale, Murray Gold's best soundtrack for the show, and a fantastic guest cast
3. Series 1: Christopher Eccleston hits the ground running, and makes the Ninth Doctor feel instantly likeable and compelling. Billie Piper makes a strong debut as Rose, and her relationship with the Doctor feels natural and emotionally justified. Classic episodes like Dalek, Father's Day and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, and a good establishment of Russell's vision for the show, series 1 was the perfect way to relaunch the show for a new audience
4. The finale does drop the ball somewhat, but we still have a very strong run here
5. Series 10: Capaldi leaves on a high note here, being paired opposite Bill and Nardole and making up a very strong TARDIS team. There is a big mid-series slump with the Monk trilogy, but the first half features some strong and underrated episodes, and the second half features an interesting character arc for Missy that ultimately leads to a fantastic finale that gives the Cybermen the story they deserved (FINALLY) and sees off Capaldi perfectly (if one ignores Twice Upon a Time)
6. However, it is a marked improvement on its predecessor
7. The series is well-structured and has some really strong elements, but it also suffers from a very weak story arc
8. Series 8: another real mixed bag of a series. Story quality is generally decent, though there are some big clunkers (Kill the Moon and In the Forest of the Sh*te). Capaldi is excellent, and Clara is given the chance to develop as a character. Unfortunately, the finale is very mediocre, and the Clara/Danny subplot drags down a lot of the series as a whole
9. Tennant's debut series does pull ahead of Whittaker's largely thanks to a few standout episodes like School Reunion, The Girl in the Fireplace and The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
10. Series 6: a strong first half with an interesting story arc, a great TARDIS team, and strong episodes like The Doctor's Wife and A Good Man Goes to War. Unfortunately, the second half is weaker, as the stories become less interesting (with a few exceptions), River takes up too much focus, and the arc becomes convoluted and builds to a very unsatisfying conclusion
11. Series 11: just feels really bland and generic. There's not much of a sense of direction for the series, and it lacks its own distinctive feel compared to the previous eras. The main characters feel quite bland, and the quality of stories feels quite weak, though there are a few exceptions (Rosa, Demons of the Punjab, It Takes You Away and Resolution)
12. The absolute nadir of the revival, and let's hope it stays that way
Honestly my favourite series is 9
Dubliam it is really good in my opinion, I love heaven sent.
Series 4 will always be the best I don’t care David Tennant was absolutely phenomenal the season finale all the companions glorious 😢
What a great video, thank you. I happen to agree 90% with your choices, but besides that your descriptions are magnificent. The way you described the finale of series 1 is the way I've always felt but could not put in such beautiful words
To put series 11 and series 6 on top of series 8 is criminal
Peter capaldi was so underserved by Moffat’s writing.
If you want proof that series 4 is the best, all you have to do is look at the dialogue. For example, this always breaks my heart:
DOCTOR: “I just want you to know there are worlds out there, safe in the sky because of her. That there are people living in the light, and singing songs of Donna Noble, a thousand million light years away. They will never forget her, while she can never remember. And for one moment, one shining moment, she was the most important woman in the whole wide universe.”
SYLVIA: “She still is. She's my daughter.”
DOCTOR: “Then maybe you should tell her that once in a while.”
Series 4 isn't great way to comedic also bad episodes partners in crime, doctors daughter, midnight, next doctor, waters of mars, end of time part 1 & 2 just to name a few

My top 11 Modern Who seasons are:

Ryan Pollard I loved series 9 too. I thought the Ashildr two parter and the sleep no more episode were the only duds.
@@annaparsons6707 I actually don't mind the two Ashildr episodes but Sleep No More was the lowpoint of Series 9.
The viking episode was awful but that is my opinion
Series 9 is very high up there for me, so good. Capaldi is my fave Doctor because of this season.
Huh, nice to hear someone with a different opinion on S9. Personally, I didn't like the season but that's just my opinion. Thank you.
You really dislike Capaldi’s run! Calling it worse than the Chibnall stuff is just bonkers.
Nah its true
@@markrodger4601 The Chibnall stuff is just about universally reviled.
Tennants era was the very peak of doctor who. Utterly marvellous
Ok, I'm on the 11th choice and, well I had more fun with that series than series 9, so probs would put series 9 below it, but in hindsight I do sorta realise that series 7 didn't have many standout episodes.

I can smell specific hate for Clara
#12 - Series 8

I feel like I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed The Doctor's Daughter :(

The majority love it. He's the minority
@@mrmaclovin255 no, the majority thinks it's the weakest of Series 4. those who love it are in the minority.
S: Series 1, 4, 9, 10
A: Series 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 12
B: Series 7, 8
*Series 5, 6, and 11 would’ve been lower if you hadn’t made such strong, well thought out statements.
The lightbulbs not working in series 7 was a metaphor for Moffat running out of ideas.
How pathetic you have to be to make a comment like that.

Series 4 is the best for sure. Also Capaldi deserved so much better.
I may disagree about a fair few of the placings in the run, but I have to say well done. This is the most in depth review of the show I have ever seen
My rankings, best to worst-
1. Vincent and the Doctor, Amy's Choice, The Big Bang, Hungry Earth... hit after hit after hit
Great stuff
Big time
Wow. This is more or less close to my list, and I agree with a lot of your reasoning. Nice!

8 is not great (and the finale is very poor) but I'd definitely place it higher than 7
Very very refreshing to see a ranking video like this that isn't just relentless Chibnall bashing.
Never watched it ...... but now you convinced me to watch season 4
Had to pause for a few minutes seeing season 9 so low, Literally capaldis strongest season
Same
42 is good? Don’t make me laugh
finally, someone who actually objectively looks at series 11 and 12 and doesnt immediately dismiss them by saying "boooo bad writing horrible!!!!!!
Ok. Season 8 being so low is a suprise.
