Others: There will never be a great on-screen duo as Al Pacino and DeNiro in Heat.
Sir Ian and Dame Helen: Hold our tea.
Hold our tea...nice! :D
LOL, Love it!
Yes indeed. One lump or two?
@@maureenwagg5305 just one, dearie.
GamePapa I mean Seán bran as ned stark and Michelle fairly as catelyn tully stark dismantled them long before Ian and Helen did.
Ian is so charmingly naughty. And witty.
He doesn't even think about it, it just seems to come out. Love that guy
@Anthony No, he doesn't. That was bad photoshop, and he never did play Dumbledore.
Devika Devaiah Vicious was brilliant!
Ok
Helen and Ian... damn that's a straight powerhouse duo of legends
More like a gay and straight powerhouse duo of legends... hahaha... I find myself out...

Not even Tom Hanks.
Well, maybe Keanu.
Would LOVE them as grandparents
Keanu deserves them. Keanu is worthy... the rest of us... eh.
@@marciamcdevitt964 Yeeeeessss🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Well, for them, Ian and Helen would be their parents.
Keanu is like 56 so they can be parents as well
I don't think Helen Mirren will ever stop being cool as f**k. She's awesome.
As is Ian. Love the Brits!
@N Similarly, that is also the only other place one is likely to hear such vapid race-based statements.
😬 VERY TRUE!!! I HAVE A BONER!!! SORRY WOMEN!!! WHY AM I SO WEIRD!!!
Courage Karnga q
Rage Against My Hairline Check out the reference to Helen on an early episode of Blackish! 😆
You know, I would absolutely love to see a take on Romeo and Juliet as two elderly people falling in love with each other and being thwarted by their families because their children think they are losing their touch with reality/in the beginning stage of Alzheimers/shouldn't ever cheat on the memory of their dead husband or wife and deny them their agency in choosing who to be in a relationship with. Julia's nurse is still a nurse, just more of a medical nurse instead of a child rearer.
You know, I love that.
I LIKE this!
🧐🧐🧐 you have told me the plot and i still want to watch it😭
@@mancube7645 Maybe we can get Stephen to make a pitch to a studio, hehe. I mean, a tweet with an idea sparked a pitch for a movie with Rihanna and i don't remember who else, so why not a YT comment? lmao
You should totally write that script! cause I would SOOOO Watch that movie!!!
For these two, nothing is out of bounds. How refreshing. Ian is 80 and Helen is 74 and they belong in the now.
Yes! I agree.
CARL Echevarria They are such role models for life and aging gracefully.
They are the oldest youngest people around
Would love to see them playing Juliet&Juliet.
This! In today's climate of social acceptance, why the heck not?! It's Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, who the fuck is doing to _dare_ argue?
Set in Manchester.
I'm predicting a reverse "Ghost" love-scene or a severe cat fight!!
Or Romeo & Juliet with DHM as the Romeo character!
Sir Pat Stu as ROMEO!
They are both fabulous, they just project such class and warmth!
They are so beautifully British!
You're just being tricked by the British accent lmfao
Hermann Schloffer von Graz People always think it’s the accent that makes brits seem smarter and educated, it’s actually vocabulary and articulacy that seduces you.
Indeed! I have to admit that I love the elegance and class of the British.
They are both theater royalty, but Dame Helen Mirren is a goddess, and becomes more lovely with time.
Jon Blondell Indeed. I adore her! Such a diamond.
She is so sweet

I love how Ian always flirts with everyone.
Peter O'Toole used to do that too.
Didn't realise he was so sassy lol
He's the only Diva I enjoy watching
Because he’s chivalric. Get it? Because he’s a British knight?😂
He's so lax about, it's barely flirting & more joking, MOST of the time (I recall one incident where I couldn't tell)
The way they carried out that 'lie' about Manchester! Flawless.
Royalty. Straight up Royalty on that stage. I have chills.
Steven Colbert is totally starstruck here :-) And who can blame him!
Stephen's giddiness at Sir Ian's suggestion that he could be his Romeo was absolutely adorable and delightful
The Manchester lie was all done on the go! That is when you tell how professional they are ;D
The only thing giving it away for me was that Ian has said before that he was certain about his sexuality from a very early age
I know, that was amazing. Thank God for the world that they didn't decide to become serial killers.
Simo Galile i was watching Colbert... he was eating it all hook line and sinker! That was delicious.
So true. XD
Stephen would have appreciated the yes-anding.
tossing off "apologies for my declension" encapsulates so much of why Stephen keeps me coming back
Exactly!
Omg, it's Gandalf, Stephen must be so excited 😂

Oh yes, I forgot about his passion)
I was SO waiting for an LOTR reference.
When your Grandparents are Morgana Le Fay and Gandalf the Grey
That's SIR Ian McKellen, peasant.

And DAME Helen Mirren, yokel.
I think he just left out the titles because they are bros 🤷🏽♀️
LOL !
Steven: you never had sex with each other?
Mirren: no, we never met in Manchester.
Also, a cluster of bombs going off in Steven brain through out the interview.
Minnie Venkat
Sorry for asking but what has Manchester got to do with it?
And then she says they never met there. Maybe I am dense but I don’t get it.
@@Celisar1 The start of the lie is that they met in Manchester
@@Celisar1 they were lying the whole time when they started to talk about how they met in Manchester.
Mrheatherway and Grey Ang
Thank you, strange joke....
Ah, but did they have sex? A good liar mixes fact with fiction.
Helen Mirren: "She expanded the Empire of Russia."
Stephen Colbert: "Well, it's happening again actually." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No, it's not, Monsieur Colbert. The Russian Empire has been shrinking since the end of the 19th century. 1st: sale of Alaska to the USA just after the end of The Civil War. 2nd: loss of Finland in 1917 (they kept Karelia, which is still today object of dispute between the two countries, as it's claimed by Finland to be rightfully hers). 3rd: collapse of the Soviet Union: loss of the Baltic States (snatched as it were as a consequence of the nefarious Molotov-Ribbentrop Deal), Belarus, Ukraine (homeland of Rus), all of the Caucusus states and all of the Central Asia Republics. The only thing they regained, following the outcome of WWII, was the whole of the Sakhalin Island, the southern half of which had previously been under Japanese rule. In other words the total surface of The Russian Federation is circa 17 million km2 today, versus roughly 23 million km2 at its height by the end of the 19th century, a loss of about 25% of its territory. Just a minor detail...Ah, the Crimea question and Donbass and Transnistria and... some other time. Important issues but not exactly to the point here.
@@josealbinosantosnogueira6013 ~ Perhaps, but you can't fault Vlad for trying.

I would rather hangout with Ian everyday and have endless discussions than go anywhere else with anyone my age (I'm in my 20s). He is SO much fun. I don't care what anyone says he is the most alive human being I have ever encountered you can tell he is fully immersed in every moment.
This interview could last for hours and I'd be fully entertained the whole time!
Well how about this: Ian and Helen star in a gender-reversed rendition of Romeo and Juliet. Ian plays Juliet and Helen plays Romeo.
Carlos Robinson - Hmmm. That might work.
and the roles of R&J's parents could be played by their children. It's all coming together in my head.
I was thinking the exact same thing! It would be marvelous.
Assuming that a U.S. audience is familiar with the historical rumours of Catherine the Great, is delightfully funny.
4:35 Helen portrayed Elisabeth I in a film by that name (and of course the current queen of that same name in another film) and she didn't get 'demeaned and diminished' by history.
@@granville7 I'm sure Spanish history books don't reach the same conclusions as ours. Is that what you are saying? Or are you referring to the Western tales of Catherine? Not picking a fight here. Just curious.
@@parsnipmcgee329 I guess it's more a comment about US school education and the probability that most Americans don't know anything about Catherine the Great. Not even the delightful rumors of her impetuous sexuality. As for GC I agree, Helen comment missed the point. It's more a question of propaganda between East and West than the condition of women in power. But I guess in our days it's more fashionable to blame patriarchy than the bias of our political History.
Stephen Colbert didn't know she was German. By the way, Mr. Colbert, since you mentioned evil Russia once again, how did your country become so mighty and powerful? California, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Louisianna, the Northwestern Territories, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the Philippines, Liberia, Panama, how did it all at one point become part of the American Empire? Not to mention how you conquered the Native Peoples' land. Sure, some of these territories became independent in the meantime, but the same thing happened with Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union which, from a political and geographical point of view, was the successor of the Russian Empire, with the exception of the Baltic States that only became part of the USSR in 1941, after the notorious Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
@@josealbinosantosnogueira6013 To be fair I don't think Stephen ever refered to Russia as being evil but mostly to their politics, FSB and Poutin as shady and untruthworthy. As an American he can't approve of Russian interferences in the election, can he ? It hasn't much to do with the judgment we can bear on History. Colombus was a monster, Stalin was one. Lenin was one too. Hitler, Pol Pot, Franco, Pinochet, Ben Laden. All those men were monsters even tho it's not a competition. I don't like seeing Americans being judgmental of others based on their own violent and bloody History but it's really not something you can blame Stephen for as I believe he could justify the light judgment sometimes present in his jokes...
The dynamic of two guests is always more interesting. PLEASE do this more often, if anyone is reading this at all. Such a Graham Norton vibe here. Fantastic.

I love how Helen is always so elegant & classy.,. Also a great actress. 😀
I’m always amazed again what a beautiful woman Helen is. Both of them are just the sweetest most warmhearted people and funny as hell! A little sad we didn’t get a kiss this time 😄
Lol I feel sorry for anyone who has to promote Cats, even momentarily
socrappyicoulddie he handled it with grace
On that note and a bit aside, after seeing several interviews Stephan has had with others, he actually seems a bit intimidated by the cat creature. Not sure why, could be simple answer, he is such a bright fellow. Anyhow, cats can't be solicited like dogs, cats you have to more or less wait and slowly build relationships. Occasionally, they will spontaneously warm up to a person without any hint of what's about to happen. In his interview with Jackson Galaxy, Stephen did broach the idea that cats could "see" the spiritual and it had substance with him. I hope he can figure it out, he's one sharp wit on late night tv and a terrific commentator. The theatrical "Cats" must have some kind of special charm for many - the story basically from "The Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T.S. Elliot. I'm familiar with both creatures and both actually very humble.
JGG: I still can't get over the cat costume Sir Ian wore in an episode of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicious_(TV_series)
Just saw Ian McKellen on stage last week, and afterwards he was at the exit door collecting money for charity and saying hello to theatregoers. Lovely man!
When 3 smart, amazing people meet up at the top of their game, great things happen. This was one of those times and we all got to watch. Magical
Mmm... that's exactly how you keep it on point past gray. Sir Ian is still such a saucy bit of something who is as quick to take the piss out of himself as he is to get a bit licentious with an ordinary question. Dame Helen still projects the confidence and allure of a woman in her prime while staying very humble about her talents and success. I'd say I want to be them some day, but forget that; I want to be them /now/.
Nicely stated. You're special in your own right. Have a great day 🤗!
Wonderful to hear such humor and love for acting and art and friends.
What were Ian and Stephen doing when the camera cut to that unuuuuusual loooong take to the crowd?
Strange cut.

There's so much to unpack in this interview. Absolute legends. ✨
Thankyou guys, it is a pleasure to meet you.

This Interview was 200% Charm
Ian is Godsent, and Helen a blessing :)
Such a poetic, true description of how human beings choose to portray aspects of themselves depending on the audience. Now that hit home. And in these times we can still choose to give good to others - an uplifting word; gestures of kindness; a call/email or donation.
Cheers for sharing, Stephen. Through mirth & conversation, we learn to be better.
