This performance of the winterreise is SUPERB. It’s by far the best ever I’ve heard. The pianist is STNNUNG for perfection and also originality , finally we can hear all the beautiful details of the piano accompaniment of this masterpiece , and often, a diverse interpretation emerges.Amazing! The tenor incredible voice …! technically I think nobody will be able to surpass him . Not to talk about his unreachable expressivity words, music , theatre .. cooperate to reveal a terrible message , in some moments I thought to lose my mind d … . the Shubert masterpiece is revealed in all its true geniality and terrible dramatic atmosphere. I think this is probably the most intense and dramatic music of the entire history of music. It puts Shubert in the Olympus of the greats .
probably the greatest of all . I think we haven’t duscovered the genius of Shubert yet , but this performance is a great step toward it . Many compliments to both , and my unconditional admiration !

The first version I ever heard was HANS HOTTER's dark and funereal interpretation .

In 78 years I have listened to these songs maybe 100 times. I have always hated them. I appreciated their greatness but I could not stand the harsh pain. Well, finally, upon listening to this performance, I suddenly love them. FINALLY they are played with the sweet nature of Schubert. That pianist plays like Schubert, far and away best I ever heard. Simple, sincere, true and kind. Through Schubert’s nature we can love these songs and this pianist shows the way. And Bostridge who is true and has an angel’s voice does not need to strain. With his voice and understanding, the songs sing themselves.

Not only the best but also the most educated and knowledgeable about Schubert's Winterreise. One should absolutely read his book about the Winterreise, with each song analyzed in-depth. In English it's called Schubert Winter Journey Anatomy of an Obsession. In German : Schubert's Winterreise Lieder von Liebe und Schmerz. Excellent books, you'll enver listen to the songs and watch Ian the same way. With much more admiration. Respects, great artist and writer.

@Clementine Clement -. You *could not* be more wrong! There’s somebody named Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who still holds the title of Schubert King, and has since 1955, who not only had a much better natural instrument and much more natural technique than IB, he was also a scholar in a way that IB wishes he could be! But, of course, if you prefer a singer who begins each phrase by trying to bury his chin into his throat, hey! Who am I to argue with _that,_ lmao!

I agree with the technical aspects, but don’t like the way he strangles his sound by trying to dig his chin into his throat. It’s obvious to me that Schubert is too deep for him….I’ve listened to hundreds of singers, and there are very few who can allow their spirits to inhabit the characters Schubert draws so vividly for them. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is the best of the best….I have no idea how he could inhabit the characters in a 3 minute song and totally grab listeners, but he could!

@@voraciousreader3341 Yes, I love Dieskau more than 30 years and is still my best choice too. Bostridge has some familiar aspect to me as a Korean. His pronunciation of long vowels seems to have some transformation minimally. In Korean traditional vocal music, a long vowel which is started transformed to another one or more on the same note or the same lyrics vowel. So, specially I commented "fresh." Could "strangles his sound by trying to dig his chin into his throat" be related to my comment?

You can feel how Ian became this winter wanderer and can live through all the deep thoughts and deeper pains embodied in this ultimate masterwork with him. But drama beats music here. In the end it remains a question of taste and mood if you prefer this soulful approach or a slightly more restrained and controlled one like in Christian Gerhaher's 2001 recording.

This performance finds Ian Bostridge in excellent voice, dramatic commitment, and complexity. I heard him perform this live in Chicago about 20 years ago, near the time of the CD release. I really enjoyed it, and I used to play the recording often (enough). It does not supplant any of the recordings (or recorded performances) by Fischer-Dieskau, Matthias Goerne, Werner Gura, or Peter Mattei (my current favorite) --but it is very good. Supposedly, his German is not very convincing, and he is known for overdoing the consonants (which true German singers never do), but he is not guilty of that here. I can't attest to the quality of his German, but I can say he is delivering smoother lines than he used to.

This is one of the greatest song cycles of Schubert (Lieder) ever composed! One can clearly hear the sadness that outpours from this poem and Schubert sets this song cycle beautifully! As someone who studied German for a year while in high school, I can hear through the vivid words the dwindling spirit of the person through all 24 songs. As a composer of classical music, I often use this song cycle for inspiration. The music always leaves me in tears every single time I listen to it! Danke schön (Thank you)!

I remember as if it was yesterday. He was on the German TV show "aspekte". Maybe it was 8 years ago... who cares. before that I rarely listened to Schubert oder the Schumanns. Romantic music was just a no go for me. I came From Bach to Mendelssohn Bartholdy and then his Winterreise made me become a romantic. These days I adore Sibelius even more.

    Die Nebensonnen

Drei Sonnen sah ich am Himmel stehen,
    Hab’ lang’ und fest sie angesehn;
Und sie auch standen da so stier,
Als wollten sie nicht weg von mir.
Ach, meine Sonnen seid ihr nicht!

    Fremd bin ich eingezogen,
    Fremd zieh’ ich wieder aus.
    Der Mai war mir gewogen
    Mit manchem Blumenstrauß.
    Das Mädchen sprach von Liebe,
Die Mutter gar von Eh’, -
Nun ist die Welt so trübe,
    Der Weg gehüllt in Schnee.
    Ich kann zu meiner Reisen
    Nicht wählen mit der Zeit,
Muß selbst den Weg mir weisen
    In dieser Dunkelheit.
    Es zieht ein Mondenschatten
    Als mein Gefährte mit,
    Und auf den weißen Matten
    Such’ ich des Wildes Tritt.
    Was soll ich länger weilen,
    Daß man mich trieb hinaus?
    Laß irre Hunde heulen
    Vor ihres Herren Haus;
Die Liebe liebt das Wandern -
Gott hat sie so gemacht -
    Von einem zu dem andern.
    Fein Liebchen, gute Nacht!
Will dich im Traum nicht stören,
    Wär schad’ um deine Ruh’,
Sollst meinen Tritt nicht hören -
    Sacht, sacht die Türe zu!
    Ich schreibe nur im Gehen
    An’s Tor noch gute Nacht,
    Damit du mögest sehen,
    An dich hab’ ich gedacht.

Very musical. I enjoy this as an audio piece. I feel the performance lacks focus, not standing still, and looking down with his head a LOT. I'm often cut off from facial expression, and the "dancing" around makes him weaker on stage. But if I close me eyes, it's great!
