De uitvoerenden van het openingsconcert: Janine Jansen [viool/violin], Gregory Ahss [viool/violin], Nimrod Guez [altviool/viola], Nicolas Alstaedt [cello], Rick Stotijn [contrabas/double bass], Andreas Ottensamer [klarinet/clarinet], Fredrik Ekdahl [fagot/bassoon] en Radek Barborák [hoorn/horn].
Schubert: 'Octet in F'.
Opname/recorded: woensdag 24 juni 2015, in TivoliVredenburg te Utrecht.
Janine is, in my opinion, the greatest violinist of our time. Not because she's perfect or has great technique (which she does) but because she just lives and breathes the music and plays every performance like it's life and death. With reckless abandon. And the true magic that she inspires in these chamber ensembles with her infectious energy is just unreal.
absolutely!
Wow, great and accurate comment. Have you ever seen her personally? What wouldn't I give to talk to her... Such a perfect angelic woman.
I love Janine Jensen and her marvelous artistry. She plays with heart and passion. It is a pleasure to watch and listen to her interpretations. She is undoubtedly a great violinist. Also a very lovely beautiful woman. Still, saying that Janine is the greatest violinist of our time is a bold statement. Is she greater than Maxim Vengerov, Perlman, Joshua Bell, Augustin Hadelich, Hillary Hahn, Julia Fischer, Ann Sophie Mutter? I am a violinist myself, though not a professional one. I would hesitate to say Janine is the very best, much as I love her playing.
Exactly, well say 👌
@@caltamino In overall artistry and impact of her performances? Yes, I would certainly rank her above all those you listed.
I would like to add a note of appreciation for the lovely clarinet playing and to the engineers for the clarity of recording and instrumental balances....
You're right 👌
This octet is considered a masterpiece in the scope of chamber music. In fact, only an outstanding musician like Shubert could write it. The harmony and the “conversation “ that is established between the instruments is amazing and divine. The violinist is superb. The orchestration is exceptional. This work deeply impresses us for its sensitivity and melodic wonder. Thanks for this incredible moment by listening to this magnificent music.
Beautiful chamber music with Janine Jansen and friends .
All 8 players are superb. They play with evident love for this marvelous music of Schubert. How sad that Schubert died at the tender age of 31 before his extraordinary genius was recognized. I love his music and also love this wonderful performance played with perfect taste and just right. We are privileged to have Janine Jensen and here friends to enjoy.
I am well aware this video is 5 years old and yet I feel the need to say my thanks to the florist that arranged these beautiful bouquets in the background. For me they made this entire performance feel a lot more romantic in every way. Vielen Dank!
Agreed! They are gigantic. They make the players look miniature. :)
Hard to imagine how this could be improved upon. Extraordinary ensemble playing. Jansen and Ottensamer are sensational.
It is amazing how eight instruments can create such an immaculate array of soundscapes and emotion.
This is one of those incredible Schubert pieces that you wish would never end, although it is already quite long.
And yet this is short when compared to a number of musical compositions. Some are over four times the length. But yes; I agree with you. The music stops all too soon. What would Schubert have achieved if he had lived to be as old as Papa Haydn?
@@RWBHere hopefully he would have made some concertos and two more movements to his 8th symphony
Better, this is one of those composers that you wish would never die
@@Rodrigo11100 schubert was kurt Cobain before kurt Cobain was kurt cobain
As Robert Schumann wrote, heavenly length.

Hermosa tu música, tu grupo y vos, Janine!
Classical compositions are the architects of emotion, constructing towering structures of sound that resonate within the chambers of the heart. 🏛🎵
Marvelous performance! Janine Jansen’s passion, and Andreas Ottensamer’s dedication and sensitivity are spacial!! Thank you, all...
The best recording of this octet - for me at least. That wonderful bugler! And all of these personified musical wonders!
"Bugler"? You mean "horn player"?
Music does not come any better than this - an excellent performance of this marvellous music by Schubert. Thank you from Thailand
Glad to see a response from Thailand but if you want to see something lovely go to the lobby of the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok almost any early evening to see and to hear some beautiful string music played
Music of Schubert is unmatched in its expressiveness and tenderness.
Yes, tenderness. That's the word.
Ahmed Karadakhy The tenderness of Schubert's music is an arrow straight to the heart.
Exemplary Schubert. Thanks so very much.
This is my favourite piece of music by ANY composer. I have about 10 versions on CD, and before lockdown I would try to attend every live performance of it in my home country. There are hundreds of reasons why it is so special but I’ll just mention one. It’s fairly clear from about 13’55” that the movement is drawing to a close, and Schubert could so easily have ended with just a couple of ff tutti chords. But he didn’t. Instead, the tempo slows and at 14’30” the horn seems to say “you may have thought that this was just a jolly divertimento, but you were so wrong! This will be the most beautiful and exciting and moving journey of your life”.
The rising arpeggio ending with repeated notes occurs in many guises throughout the octet, and its meaning is revealed in the nightmare in the recap in the finale. It is fear. And then what happens? It is transmuted into pure joy in the coda. I so resonate with your description: "This will be the most beautiful and exciting and moving journey of your life."
@@gervaisfrykman266 yes indeed. The (brief) nightmare near the end is something that the Octet shares with Schubert’s String Quintet. What a complex man he seems to have been. For me, the passage first heard at 18’ 45” here is the sound of Gaia breathing. It reminds me of Berg’s description of the first movement of Mahler 9: “the expression of a tremendous love for this world, a longing to live in peace and to savour Nature to its depths before the arrival of Death”.
@@antwerpsmerle1404 Thanks for that insight concerning Gaia. You shared experience. He knew all about sadness and fracturing. There is a breakdown in the slow movement here, and another in the slow movement of the great C major symphony. But nobody takes on the sadness with greater courage. I think particularly of the E flat piano trio, finale, when the very sad slow movement theme is recapitulated in e flat minor, then turns to major, and the Agnus Dei of the E flat mass just before the second Dona nobis Pacem, where he breaks out of the solemn round that he has created, with a major chord. There is also the outburst in the slow movement of the A major sonata D959, but the finale is warm, glowing, assured, beautiful.
@@gervaisfrykman266 thanks for that. I don’t know Schubert’s Masses but will seek them out. The breakdown in D959 is - for me - almost too intense to listen to. What anguish must a human being have had to endure to write music like that? Actually, I hope that Lorraine Byrne Bodley’s forthcoming biography will shed new light on Schubert’s personality.
Other than Mozart's Concertos, Schubert's Octet is my favorite! You've done a wonderful job on it, thank you!!
Wonderful playing from the bassoonist, Fredrik Ekdahl! Gorgeous ensemble playing and excellent musicianship from all the performers. Thanks for this video, AVROTROS Klassiek, I have returned to re-watch it more than 5 times since it was posted!
This is my fifth time, and there will be many more.
A wonderful performance from all. The horn player seems to me to be fantastic. He gets a lot of color from his instrument.
That was a most excellent performance of a most excellent piece.
Yes, God bless our Schubert
I've had the pleasure of performing this piece (on horn). It is a masterpiece, and hearing players of this caliber perform it takes to another level yet.
An amazing display of concentration, joy, pathos, and skill. It is shocking to hear great and difficult music played so well
Simply glorious in every respect.

Yes sir
They all play with one breath and the phrasing of this interpretation makes it so exciting in every moment. Breathtaking!!
The best performance of this work I have ever heard (or seen!).
This is spectacular ! And thank you for observing the repeat in the first movement ❤
Wonderful, amazing, fabulous! Beautiful ensemble playing. Haven't enjoyed listening to this little masterpiece by Schubert so much since my teens!
+Ashvajit Dharmachari Yes it is a wonderful little masterpiece! I have been listening to it for 20 years and never tire of it.
Excellent pacing throughout the Octet, A real feeling of involvement in and love of the music. Bravo to all in the ensemble! Thank you for the video.
There are several very good recordings of this piece on UA-cam, but this one seems -- to me at least -- to capture Schubert's personality best. I love the energy that the players bring to this performance. Superb recording and editing -- both video and audio.
Thank you very much.
Magical! A wonderful piece played by extraordinary musicians.
Eines der besten Kammermusikwerke aller Zeiten
Ja vol!
Neben Beethoven seinem Septett 😊
What a nice assemble they are extraordinarily good. It's nice to see how Janine conduct them. She is always so happy when playing.
So beautiful performance!!! Thank you!!
Endlich! Nun weiß ich endlich was Schubert in diesem Stück eigentlich wollte. Dialog, thats the word. Glanzleistung von allen!
Nice horn playing, Radek!
You cant get better than this!! Fantastic
THAT WAS FREAKING AWESOME!!!
Wonderful rendition! The best fourth part I have ever heard.
wonderful performance
i think i have lisent this pieces every month since i have discovered it! So thanks you for the performance!
Glorious chamber music at it's best, both the music and the performers.

Magnificent! Thank-you.
The genuine pleasure with which the players perform works contagiously.Janine Jansen is like always so inspiring,as well on the listeners as her friends performers. But why can you not tell us the names of her"friends"They certainly deserve it.Dank U wel!
Not sure about the others, but the clarinetist is Andreas Ottensamer from the Berlin Philharmonic.
the friends are actually mentioned in the caption under the clip. If you open that it states the names.
the hornist: Radek Barborak
fantastic ensemble - enjoy the music
A masterpiece too seldom performed.
Bravissimi!!!! Bravi!
Beautiful composition and performance ♫♪☺
Well, what can I say? I'm not really a violin kind of guy, but Janine made me appreciate the instrument more. Thank you ma'am ;o)
Carnegie Hall NYC this piece will be performed on April 6th, 2020. Can't wait!
Magnificent many thanks for posting
Janine,
Sentimiento, alegría, fuerza, carácter. Interpretación, belleza.

Beautiful. I think Janine is just great with her ensemble work, whether it be chamber music or a concerto.
I’m a jazz pianist that plays some Baroque and Classical music. I think I need to change it around and play more Classical. This is extraordinary!!
Begin with the Scherzo of this work. I've got the impression that it is a little bit like jazz …
Incredible nerves of steel of Janine at 56:34
Bravi tutti !!!!..Bravo Nicolas...ottima interpretazione.
Wunderbar!! Vielen Dank für ein sehr schönes Konzert!!
Thank you beautiful much enjoyed, Alec.
sublime... 😍😍😍😍😍
Genial interpretación excelente...
Excellent!
Was that a wrong note by Andreas at 25:26, right as he goes into that trill? Kind of shocking, actually. But I mean they're all fantastic musicians. Things happen sometimes.
Magistral sonido . Estupendos concertistas.
Bravi.
Very nice!
Edificador! Perfeito!
For those not familiar with the chamber repertoire who like this: try the Beethoven Septet, which was Schubert's model. And if you like piano too, the Quintet by Czech composer Zdenek Fibich.
2016,ENERO ...Fantástico grupo.
Seamless job 👌
Gorgeous!
Lovely.
Is any more performance possible ?
It is the best performance and work which shake the soul of person
Eroico...extraordinario...grandioso.
Glorious and musical , what a fantastic group!!! Who ever said "making expressions" while making music is a nimrod...do you make love with out a face of joy and passion?
What on Earth is a "nimrod"?
nimrod - 2. Informal A person regarded as silly, foolish, or stupid. (thefreedictionary)
The things one learns on UA-cam!
Not quite the way Elgar meant "Nimrod", but correct in this context. See also Genesis.
Look at the name of the violist. What are the odds?
Bravo pour cette magnifique performance
Remarquable interprétation de cette oeuvre remarquable
Great musicians !!! Lovely piece. Congrats !!! ☺
Would that every performance on UA-cam were as fantastic as this one. Bravvi, Janine & Friends.
Thank you, *AVROTROS* .
AVROTROS have made a career out of performances that are worthy of videos to keep forever. Well done to them. ~Having Janine as a performer in so many of them just adds to their value. Currently in my opinion, she is the best in the world.

This is great music making, and wow, those triplet semiquavers in the last movement?
Fabulous
BRAVISSIMO !
