For those of you confused about the "no stapler" thing: You would need a long arm stapler for the first method, but most people only have regular staplers, which are a common household item. That's why I assumed people would have staples at home, even though you don't need the stapler itself for this technique.
you dont need a long armed stapler! you could open the stapler and press it down directly onto the paper whilst using an eraser below the paper. so essentially youre stapling the paper to the eraser, but its easy to remove the bullet edges from the eraser. its a really easy technique without the need to seperate the staple bullets into individual ones. i did this when i was younger in school when i was bored hahaha. thank you for the video! it seems like a fun project to do.
+Sherin Koh My staplers don't open up because they're mini ones. I thought it would be more interesting to not use a stapler at all (and I didn't want to go buy one, lol.)
When I use that method, it doesn't work well with thicker paper like the kind used in this tutorial. I'm so happy Baylee showed us another way to get the stapler in
I also haxe just mini staplers that don't open up. I might make a notebook with this method so it's custom. I think my friends would like to know and I would probably just send the link over Skype to this video.
Sherin Koh thanks for this! I actually just made 4 sketchpad using this method! If you peeps are having trouble with this method cuz of thick paper.. just slam it hard😂
You absolutely do *not* want "PVC" glue. The glue you want is "PVA" (polyvinyl acetate). That's also what's shown in the video; you can read "PVA adhesive" on the bottle.
I love this idea!! I love books, journals!! I love scrapbook paper and washi tape. This gives me a way to create my own journals, to make junk journals, bible journals or traveler's notebooks or regular journals the possibilities are endless. I can have fun using my paper stash by making pockets, divider pages, bookmarks and so much more!! Look what you have sparked in my brain!! You are amazing!! Thank you for this video!!
I made my own! I suck at finishing sketchbooks because once there are more than 4 drawings in it that I don't like , I don't wanna draw in it anymore. Now I can just make myself small sketchbooks with like 10-15 pages which I can then finish in like a week or two. That way I'll not end up hating my art .
Lyka A good idea is that you should rip the pages that the bad drawings are in and make that into a book so in the future you can see much you have improved
HOW TO MAKE A SKETCHBOOK "First you get a sketchbook.and rip out the pages to make a new sketchbook...." How to make it without a stapler.... "Get staples and become the stapler"
@SunshineDasiesButterMellow Doesn't necessarily have to be a Sketchbook though either. You can make it into a Journal, etc... Sketchbook Paper just helps the paper to last longer, because it's so much more sturdy.
Thank you so much for posting this, I made my own and it went well! The method I used was to glue the ends of the separate sheets of paper together, and I did it with 48 sheets of watercolour paper. It took me 7+ coats of hobby glue, and then a few extra days between two heavy books. It's stayed together nicely, and I love sketching and painting inside it! Thank you so much! :D
Wow! I found the first method perfect for the small handbook that I wrote for victims of domestic abuse and wanting to get out for Domestic Abuse Awareness in October, which is next month. I need to make a couple of finished books to offer up in hopes organizations will choose to reprint them in bulk and give them out to victims of DV in the shelters. Since I can't afford printing services right now, this enables me to do it myself and still have a professional product! Thank you for your video!
I spend a lot of money on sketchbooks so this is actually gonna save me thanks because I need to make one for pens and diffrent one for watercolour and fanart ❤️ this is amazing

I had watched this video when you first put it out, and made a few sketchbooks for myself that I will admit I did not use... HOWEVER, I still remembered the method you taught us in this video and eventually I did make a new sketchbook I finally finished back in 2019. I had completely forgot where I learned how to do it though, and re-found this video today. So thank you for sharing this super easy method to making sketchbooks, they are very fun to make! 💕
This is FANTASTIC!! I will be using this in my art class! My juniors and middle school kids can make the staple books and my seniors can make the glued ones! This will hopefully give them some ownership and responsibility over their sketch work for the term! Thank you! I have skill share so I will be looking up Caleb Sylvest and yourself for more classes!
These came out really nice. Is there an alternative to chipboard? I'd really like to try making one but I won't be able to get my hands on chipboard. My favorite part is the personalization aspect. Thanks, Baylee!
Wow. Lightning struck me reading that. So simple, I now feel stupid. Great idea tho. Thanks for that. Even tho you probably totally forgot you even said it many many months ago.
You can also make water color blocks so you dont need to tape down your paper every time. Clip your papers together like you did in the 2nd method with a plain piece of regular paper on top and bottom (in case you get glue over the edge), apply hot glue to the side and spread with a silicone spatula or a popsicle stick, let cool, move clips and do the other sides leaving one corner unglued, about an inch in each of the 2 side. Let all sides cool, trim any excess glue and you're done. Use a palette knife and slide it under the free corner and along all the sides carefully to remove the top sheet of regular paper, and you are done. Do the same to remove the paper once your watercolor painting is dry and peel any glue on the edge of the paper.

I already plan on making a batch of sketchbooks to give to kids or friends and maybe use them on my own regard for comics and such. You didn't skip the important details and added some of your own tips to the experience and I'm happy to have come across this video. Thank you Baylee!
I tried doing the 1st method, it turned out well. It's my 1st time using a cutter, but I forgot to lift our table cloth and I accidentally cut our table cloth. Hope no one will notice🤞🤞🤞
Hi are you still there my dear?? I love your video and are now making my own artbooks ( I have an A3 sketchbook never used for 8 years but now my granddaughters seem to love art, so I know these smaller books will appeal to them). I hope you are well and thank you for your lovely videos, so easy to understand. Love from South Africa 🙏❤💐
Absolutely LOVED this video! The first method, and probably the quickest one, for binding the notebook was to manually put in the staplers instead using an actual staple. This took me less than 10 minutes to do and I'm thoroughly amazed by how awesome this notebook looks! Thank you for sharing this with a great tutorial!
I did this really weird but neat thing where I took a bunch of paper and a piece of folded cardboard and took one long piece of string and tied it all together real tight vertically. weird but it works.
Really this is the best I’ve seen the 1st method look soo easy so I will try it today when I get back from school then if it turn out good I’ll give it to my teacher if I decide to.
This is honestly such a perfect idea if you have a lot of extra paper laying around. I have some watercolor paper books that are of 'lesser' quality that I would not necessarily paint on for a complete piece of art but are also too big to travel with as a sketch book. I hate wasting paper/art supplies so this is a great way to use it still in a fully functional way! Especially on the go to/from work! Thank you for this super awesome and useful video! :) :)
Me after the video: "Man, I want to make that" My brain: "You have no budget" Me: "True, but-" My brain: "No but-but, you have no budget, you are BROKE!" Me: "I agree with you, my brain, rest in peace my idea before heading to school back"
Your tutorial was amazing! I just made a saddle-stitch style one today though I had to improvise on my cover since I don't have scrapbook paper yet. I did a card stock cover around regular printer paper and it's holding up great so far! Thank you for this awesome video. I'll probably refer to it again to try a perfect bound sometime.
Just saying: Corner Chomper! It's a life saver if you like to make rounded corners more often. It even cuts through chipboard! It's by the same company as the Crop-a-dile. Love your handmade sketchbooks. I have two favourite techniques. The pamphlet stitch for sketchbooks that go into a TN cover (it's the easiest stitch you can imagine). And for a more professional look I love to bind them using the coptic stitch. If you want to try that, I recommend using waxed threat. It makes the job so much easier. They come in all kinds of colours.
If they keep falling apart, you could probably take the paper out and put them in your own sketchbook! (only if you like the paper though. don't put crap paper in your sketchbook)
I'm so late-. I did 2 of these it's really great and I find it better making your own cover even if I have a printer because it makes it more of your art and really just makes it better and more fun
I've been waiting for this video, because I'm going on vacation in a month and I'd like to take a custom sized watercolour sketchbook with me. I'm impressed that you turned your ruler over (cork side up) to cut with your x-acto knife. I learned that in graphic design school and not a lot of people realize the gap the cork makes can make your line uneven. I like the cover papers you choose too, they're very pretty. :) Did you buy all of the supplies at Michaels? Mainly the chip board and book binding glue?
+LeanneLand Art Ah, I should have mentioned the upside down ruler tip in the video! It was mentioned in the Skillshare video, which is why I did it that way. I got the glue at DeSerres because I couldn't find one specifically for bookbinding at Michael's. Supposedly Tacky Glue works well, which is at Michael's. The chipboard is from uline.ca. I bought it in bulk back when I packaged and shipped my own prints, and now I have some left over. I'm not sure where to buy it in small quantities. You'd think Michael's would have it, but I don't know for sure.
A way to use normal staplers for this type of projects is to put a eraser underneath and staple on it the take of the eraser and then fold staples inside Ps : This method is easy, safe and convenient
Thank you for this video!! It's 3am in the morning right now and I just finished making my own sketchbook using the 1st method and it saved me a lot. It's quick and easy to make! :D
The end results look professional as hell! This video was incredibly informative and a really nice way of saving money. possibly even making money. thank you so much keep doing what your doing
Me. I am a teacher and my aunt is too so she always gives me school supplies she doesn't use or has too much of and that includes a bunch of staples, pins, clips, etc. So yeah lol :)
Excellent tip about poking the holes with a tack and sticking the staple through! I wish I'd known this years ago. I tried it and it worked perfectly. Tfs.
+Baylee Jae I loved this video so much thank you because I'm running out of sketch/note books but have loads of paper and I'm to young to just decide to go out and buy a sketch/note book. This also seems like a really fun project to do with my friend. We are both very arty and we recently got a 24 set of pro markers! I know that you probably won't see this but if you do I want you to know that I love all of your videos and that I loved colouring in the sharpie challenge colouring page!!!❤️😄 Your my queen!👑

why don't you make those sketchbooks with your art as the covers and sell them? that would be pretty nice
+Rare Panda Art If I manage to get a table at a convention this year, I do want to make some with my art on the cover!

Julia Justice right
Absolutely LOVED this video!
DIY'S that I watch but never do 😅
Really this is the best I’ve seen the 1st method look soo easy so I will try it today when I get back from school then if it turn out good I’ll give it to my teacher if I decide to.
WHAT CAN'T BAYLEE DO?😱 This looks really fun. I am definitely going to try it out!😉💙
If I don't have a printer for the covers I do this:
Take another paper and draw and design! (for non printers too)
If you enjoy coloring, you can use a finished coloring sheet for a cover! 😊
Omfg, thank you! Now i can do one without buying a freaking notebook for 5$.
I'm gonna try it.
$5 😉🌝
Zahra's World I mean it's only $5? 😐😬
Dilpreet Sidhu What If I wasted all of my money on alcohol markers
Deverz lmao earn more money then tbh my opinion is $5 is easy to get so yea
OMG thank you for this! I have 4 daughters and they always need these and I pay 20.00 each or more, now we can make them together!
Amberlei Moon so you obviously paid for that much come on
i can't believe they be needing that all
Amberlei Moon that is what I always feel like and now we can just make our own really cool diy sketch books without spending like 25.00
Or you can normal books (blank) and decorate themm
This is the best comment on this video
can we use a other glue??
Don’t use gorilla glue
@@negri1682 lol 🗿
Retired gachatuber lol 🗿
@@negri1682most importantly dont put glue in your hair.
+kelsadelphia That's what I did with my watercolour paper too! I recently got some nice watercolour paper, so the cheaper paper was getting neglected.
Me after the video: "Man, I want to make that"
My brain: "You have no budget"
Me: "True, but-"
My brain: "No but-but, you have no budget, you are BROKE!"
Me: "I agree with you, my brain, rest in peace my idea before heading to school back"
For one of my literature projects, we have to make an actual book with our stories, so this tutorial is helping me on how to build the cover
LOL “I” have a pamphlet book swing arm stapler in my house. I use to teach book making classes and it cane in handy. Nicely done.
I must say you are very talented.
am i the only one that got shivers every time she straightened the the paper with the ruler ...EVEN THOUGH I COULDNT HEAR THE SCRAPING
Thankyou so much😍
Definately going to try today
I found everywhere but in my local stationary shops i nowhere found it.
The background music is a type of music you would hear in a cooking mama game😄
My best friend's birthday is next month and I've been looking for some DIYs for the perfect present, and I just found it
Your tutorial was amazing! I just made a saddle-stitch style one today though I had to improvise on my cover since I don't have scrapbook paper yet. I did a card stock cover around regular printer paper and it's holding up great so far! Thank you for this awesome video. I'll probably refer to it again to try a perfect bound sometime.
I’m going to make a thousand of these and never use them, they will collect dust 😂
Love them all definitely gonna try the 2nd method
This will be good since I have two crappy sketchbooks that fall apart when I try to use them
If they keep falling apart, you could probably take the paper out and put them in your own sketchbook! (only if you like the paper though. don't put crap paper in your sketchbook)
My old sketchbook was like that
I'm so late-.
Thanks so much - that'll definitely help in my search! :)
A way to use normal staplers for this type of projects is to put a eraser underneath and staple on it the take of the eraser and then fold staples inside
Ps : This method is easy, safe and convenient
Thank you for this video!! It's 3am in the morning right now and I just finished making my own sketchbook using the 1st method and it saved me a lot. It's quick and easy to make! :D
I love your new intro
*hides stapler* I DON'T HAVE A LONG ARM STAPLER!
I also want to draw this
You inspired me to make one similar like yours. It came out so well. It took a lot more time than I expected but the result was worth it.
"How to make a sketchbook without a stapler!" Except you need staples and sketchbook paper :)
Maggie Mae long arm stapler. normal staplers are too short to staple books.
I wish I had one of them. They're so pretty
You can make one :D
The end results look professional as hell! This video was incredibly informative and a really nice way of saving money. possibly even making money. thank you so much keep doing what your doing
Looks cool ^^ I'm gonna try making a SketchBook myself!
quick question who has a staple but no stapler?
Me. I am a teacher and my aunt is too so she always gives me school supplies she doesn't use or has too much of and that includes a bunch of staples, pins, clips, etc. So yeah lol :)
Person/ Lilac Arts & Stuff i have a stapler with staples but that wont work because its not long enough so i could just use the staples instead
some people have a box of staples, like me. But the stapler breaks after a while.
Person/ Lilac Arts & Stuff her.
Exactly
Excellent tip about poking the holes with a tack and sticking the staple through! I wish I'd known this years ago. I tried it and it worked perfectly. Tfs.
I like #2, I may use that idea for my actual book.
I've been stuck in quarantine and all bookstores are closed and I'm out of sketchbooks thank you for the tutorial :)
Daaaammmn skillshare upping their game on advertising xD
her: uses 10 pages so 20
me:i'll use a hundred so i have 2 hundred😂😂😂😂
I have some I made about 10 years ago. The way you’re showing works so much better and is easier haha.
They r so pretty!!!!! ❤🦄
Olline Smith true...speaking of pretty ..gurl😍😜 😆
