Mario games not made by Nintendo tend to be lacking, but Mario's Time Machine is a pleasant surprise. For what it is and what it sets out to do, it's really not bad at all.
@@Dorian_Scott i sorta feel like this games deserves a tiny little bit of appreciation from who played it? the graphics are so cool for the NES, specially the intro, i feel like the colors just pop out! It's simple, yet, charming, i love the sprites in here, everything looks so cool, specially the time machine and those references to Mario & DK beginnings on the Arcades, it's so cool!
If I were to make my list of “Top 10 Worst Ports of Good Games”, I’d put Pac-Man World 1 (GBA), Pac-Man (Atari 2600), Carmageddon (GBC), Diddy Kong Racing DS, Super Mario Maker 1 (3DS), Mega Man X1 (mobile), Shadow Man (PS1), Battle for Bikini Bottom (PC), The Amazing Spider-Man 1 (and just when you thought TASM2 was the one of the worst things to come out of the otherwise enjoyable Spider-Man series… well, credit where credit is due, “It’s On Again” is a banger!), Sonic Genesis and etc. But if I made a list of “Top 10 Best Ports of Bad Games”, Mario’s Time Machine (NES) would definitely make it on that list (sure, you could give the SNES version credit where credit is due because it has the Castle 3 music and it’s been enhanced in The Second Reality Project Reloaded)!
Marty McFly: Are you telling me that you built a time machine out of a deloreon. Doctor Emmett Brown: The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car why not do it with some style.
I rented this one time, and it was fun enough to mess with for a weekend. Neat seeing SMW sprites on the NES, and the Mario Bros. sequences were a nice touch for a second-party edutainment product.
I always like reading your thoughts on a game that you do a playthrough on. A lot of people have *really* given this game a hard time, so to hear that it’s actually not that bad is a breath of fresh air.
I played the SNES version as a kid, along with Mario is Missing, and only recently (within the last few years) discovered the NES versions. At first I thought they were bootlegs. I'm not used to seeing SNES Mario on an NES.
Bro.. playing this game whenni was a kid was so different to understand what the hell all of this information.. but after graduation.. im just want to play this game again.. and its really hit different how nostalgic this is.. and this game is actual historical way to teach kids even tho im so dumb to understand before
Ikr?? You can only play the classic Mario Bros minigame & travel unlike the snes version where you have to surf & fill the blank pages to complete a sentence. The music is good tho
I know this game. The NES version of Mario's Time Machine had sound effects from the NES version of The Terminator. It was better than the Super NES version. This was a great one. The NES version of Mario's Time Machine has a heavier emphasis on platforming than the other two versions. Despite the presence of enemies, Mario cannot lose lives or even take damage, so obtaining a game over is impossible. To obtain an artifact in Bowser's museum, the player plays a Mario Bros.-inspired minigame in which he fights Koopa Troopas. The player can then use the Timulator and travel to one of the fourteen selectable time periods. Unlike the other versions, the player is not explicitly told which time period the artifact originated from. The player is instead encouraged to explore the time periods and obtain hints, either from local denizens or from message blocks. Once the player figures out the artifact that belongs in that time period, he can then place the artifact in its original spot. After all the artifacts have been returned, the player is tasked to answer three random multiple choice questions pertaining to the historical periods visited. Answering the questions correctly will lead the player to the final boss fight with Bowser. The player wins the game upon Bowser's defeat. This version was released on June 23, 1994. It was not one of the last games to end the NES era, I didn't have this game growing up. Later one day, I'll get this game.
Before youtubers would come around and put this on their Top 10 'Worst' lists, I had fond memories playing this back in '94 as a kid on a chill Saturday afternoon. It was fun to just boot up along with Yoshi or Yoshi's Cookie when the homework was done or just enjoying some time at home.
Just some of the sprites, really, which aren't any more detailed than the ones in SMB3, just more colorful. What's hard is some of the mode 7 based effects and they apparently couldn't get Yoshi to work for some reason. Kuribo's shoe is pretty much the same thing without the tongue.
You know what, in the name of nostalgia, I say I love this game! In its charming simplicity, the NES version of *Mario's Time Machine* is a lovely little nostalgic throwback for me. Yep. The music and the graphics and everything, not to mention the edutainment value! ^^ Believe it or not, I actually used to have fun figuring out what artifacts belonged to what time period. Yep, pleasant memories of my early years of gaming!

- The Mario sprites came from Super Mario World. This game Mario’s Time Machine came out 2 years after and just reused the Mario sprites from Super Mario World.
Because it uses overlays which take up a lot of sprites. If it were to be used in a game like smb3 with lots of stuff on screen at once, you’d see lots of flickering
I think the big gripe people have with this game is that when it comes to Mario games people are usually expected to have fun And Learning about ancient history with Mario doesn’t seem like a whole lot of fun It’s not to say the educational games are all bad there do exist plenty of good ones that isn’t just the original trail such as Carmen San Diego the living books games the school house rock games the Sesame Street pc games (although the console games can also count depending on how you look at it) the Arthur pc games and a lot of humongous entertainment games But most people didn’t expect a Mario game to be about teaching kids facts or some other third thing it’s a marketing ploy by companies who saw parents complaining about kids not doing their homework While this is not one of my favorite Mario games I do like your thoughts on the matter so to each their own I will say this as far as Mario games are concerned you can do a lot worse looking at you Mario pinball land you too lost levels (yes Nintendo made bad some Mario games as well which is normal since sega had made some bad sonic games and I’m pretty sure capcom made some games that screwed over the blue bomber)
This is one of the better edutainment games in the series actually. I've always said that Mario's Time Machine is objectively the worst Mario game, but that was referring to the SNES version. Why is the NES version so much better? It's not a good game by any means, but compared to a lot of the other edutainment games, it might as well be.
I was playing this on a crappy bootleg nes emulator for the ps1, and for some reason, the graphics for one of the enemies glitched into mario's, and the second bpth marios made eye contact, the game crashed, that felt pretty much like a creepypasta to me lol
