It is so simple this Jackie is gifted with a special talent we will never see another like him the great Winston fannna Griffiths what else we can say about this galent man
Fun fact: In 1975, Fanna lost his 1st “winner” - Utter Bliss in the stewards room to Cindy’s Relic with George HoSang. The next Wed, Utter Bliss passed the post 1st again, but was disqualified and race given to Northern Flight with Hosang again. Eventually, Fanna would win his 1st official race on Virene…..and the rest is history.
Thank for the information my brother yes this is so true but just like the old saying you can't keep a good man down and that is the greatest Of them all Winston fanna Griffiths long live
Ome Saturday evening in the eighties Fanna roll out Bimbo, Gary Richards and Hubert Bartley in a four way finish, I dont remember all the gorses but it was fanna carrying top weight of 133lbs on Well Full
Not even the brilliant Hubert "Chinna" Bartley who was BLESSED with being one of the most skillful handlers of horses ever in Jamaican horseracing; proved a worthy match for Griffiths' fanning down the stretch on most occasions. Winston "Fanna" Griffiths, OD - Mr. Smooth Operator, fanning horses was the only skill needed to WIN! 🤣🤣🤣
Bomboclaat Rohan I'm screaming in my truck with tears running down my eyes, unu know what time it is enuh the great one arm swordsman Winston Fanna Griffiths. Yow that man can write a novel /book on race riding. You will RARELY see he goes to the front by 4 lengths it's always a length to a,length and a half and give everyone HOPE of catching him in king street. But finally Rohan find one to give back Hubert Paper Man Bartley although their was more....But that was one of many PEACH OF A, RIDE.
The great man just balance and keep a straight course like a arrow when everyone else all over the place…a pure goosebumps a full up mi skin bro…JAH know!!!!them ride deh mek Yu fling weh all Yu race book and weights
Many thanks to #DuenPagon1896 for that fun fact with UTTER BLISS. Completely foreshadowed the WAITING GLORY for Winston "Fanna" Griffiths, OD especially in Grade 1 Stakes races.
It is something that Fanna do very often, he catch the gate early and hold everybody off and thats why Bimbo and Gillespie always try to make their move after Fanna because they know who he is and once he slips away it is very hard to catch him back, he is also the best around the turn.
SOME OF MY EPIC RACING EXPERIENCES This may have been the 1st leg of a double with Squeeze Me which pd $40+. I had $100 on it. The night b4 I was watching TV when guy & gal on screen started hugging & kissing like crazy. So I had to buy that double. In '78, I dreamt a white chevy negotiate a roundabout. The double then was Chevy Circuit & Hi Way. HW was ridden by Fanna for Jose Pinchin . Double pd $3,750+ In '79 I dreamt some1 gave me $20, the biggest money in Jamaica at the time. Top Currency seemed the obvious choice. But the race was 5 round & TC was drawn on the outside. In same race was Tudor Dollar drawn @ 1. TD was my choice after that. The quinella was Tudor D 1st with Top C second. One Sat, a friend & myself went to Sabina. We sat on the grounds just in front of Kingston Stand. Just b4 1st race he folded his form & stuck it under a stone. He smoked a cig then tossed the butt. As 1st race was to start he picked up his form & the cig had marked ALL 10 WINNERS PERFECTLY w/o burning through the paper. In the second race it marked the quinella which pd $17K+. We only caught the last 2 doubles.
To think, that before Griffiths won his very first Derby with Royal Dad, he'd experienced a terrible JINX (bad luck) in a way I've never seen with any other jockey. He would lose at the wire many times and knowing how Jamaicans are - many resorted to calling him an "OLE CUR". Nonetheless, he PERSISTED. We're happy that he did. No other jockey as ACCOMPLISHED as he is today and very far into the future.
wow, so glad I found this site last week... so much memories of that day. It was the first race on the programme I got there just in time to the race. Finding this site as well I found out that Chris Hammond has died. 😞. A great commentator. When he commentates you could visualise the race in your head if you wasn't at the track.

One jockey Hubert couldn't play with and it was the master Winston the great.

Fanna, chinna and bimbo all had their days when it is one or the other. Non held the other ticket as we say in racing
