There was always this seemingly MAGICAL ability that abided with Winston "Fanna" Griffiths, OD as an A-list jockey. He had animals "sprout wings" as needed to win some very tough races - most UNCOMMON feat to this day. Case(s) in point? This event. Serious traffic problems; runnning on fumes; strong and persistent urging; LIMITED strikes of the whip; comfortable victory. Thank you, Joe Mercer (Brit).
Greetings family, weather you are a fan of Fanna or not any reasonable person can say that it takes a very good jockey to rate a horse from gate to wire especially in a filed like that, Yes many other capable rides could have done the same but that was spectacular from Griffiths and that’s why he won so many races, I watched an interview on UA-cam about Phillip Feanny and he said that when it comes to Griffiths and big races the mistakes are very minimal comparing to the victories, no ordinary jockey don’t just get up and win 11 derbies.
Well said bro...he was a MASTER at rating horses on the lead.....I will never forget a race he won on a horse called NONNA (trained by Feanny). He sent Nonna to the lead going 9furlongs & 25 yards with THIS BUDS FOR YOU chasing (Charles Hussey up) and led from the gate by a 1/2 length to the winning post!!....This was a Wednesday....I remembered this race vividly because I even won good money off Nonna the day....cause I had put good money on him (because I knew the odds would be short)....I think Nonna went off at 9/5

Nice front running win for Vestia under the record breaking jock Fanna G. Vestia’s win gave Fanna and Feanny their 8th consecutive classic victory - a world record. They had won all 5 classics in 1992. Interestingly, the streak got broken in the Derby by Restless Babe (2nd here).
Vestia was such a beast. Shame she didn't produce anything of note in the shed. I'm sure if it was today, HAM stables would've bred her to top level stallions (even ship her to America to cheap Grade 1 stallions) and they would've gotten good foals out of her.
My word look how mr Griffiths gets his mount to responded to the stick has they turn for home. About four cracks of the right hand stick , horse wins by ten or more. Great man W. Griffiths

Well ridden and supreme front running tactics by Fandangles. For the record Vestia also beat Restless Babe in the St. Leger so the point of Fanna paying attention to Bimbo and Tai Fu Chai in the Derby is with merit - Narry and Restless Babe was the lucky recipient that day with the inside rail run.😊 Of another note is that turfites question the abilities of Fanna. If a survey is done it would reveal that these are 2:20 non supporters of Fanna and may very well support Bimbo, HoSang, Bartley etc etc What you will never hear is a Fanna supporter questioning the abilities of another Jockey. We just revel in the fact and celebrate one of the best riders Jamaica has produced.
You couldn't have said it any better 👍👍 I am a Griffiths fan.....and I believed he made too bad judgements in 2 Derbys..... 1.My Apology was too late.... although enduring some traffic problems 2. Vestia was sent through too early in the Derby.... Restless Babe was a superior stayer.....hence Fanna erred in moving so early....but it was a brilliant ride by Ramgeet anyway. You are so right on the score of Griffiths fans not putting down other jockeys I have great respect for Bimbo, Hosang, Hussey and Ramgeet.... although Ramgeet had a habit of pinning his rivals to the rail in a nasty way!.... Bartley , Everton Miller and Trevor Simpson were great riders too....I think Jamaica's greatest horse race riders are all mentioned here
@cliveid4126: Interesting observation. I think the word “fan” is used too broadly. However, what you are referencing is loyalists vs. fans. True racing fans appreciate what different riders bring to the table & look forward to the competition between them although they have their favorites. The “fan club” of one rider, sports person or politician etc. may be made up of a larger % of loyalists vs. fans, as you are pointing out.
2nd Take. Griffiths has proven over and over and over again that a jockey doesn't have to beat an animal into submission with the whip to get the job done. No!!! A gentle crack here and there followed by showing the whip as a reminder - enough.
Rohan can you find the race with I'm Satisfied & Westless Warrior? When Simon Husbands was the rider regular for I'm Satisfied & he opt for Wayne Da costa's Restless Warrior & Fanna beat him. Fanna at no point viewed Restless Babe as a threat in the Derby because Vestia always beat her convincingly... no wonder he left the rail open and actually was intent on "riding" Bimbo aboard Tai Fu Chieh when he took him wide coming into the straight. Vestia posted 2:07 3/5 seconds in the Oaks and ran a blistering 2:03 3/5 seconds in the Superstakes later that year. As one racing historian put it: "There's no telling to what heights an improving 3yo could reach."
@pelorusjack5461: So true, he took a calculated risk trying to tilt Tai Fu Chieh on his outside & paid the price. According to the Journal of Equine Science, a typical horse will improve by 10 -15 (horse) lengths between the age of 2 and 4.
@duenpagon1896 That science is true, while others improve even more lengths than that at times. Case in point: Menudo in 1999 ran as a maiden in the Derby and got beaten some 36 lengths. Cut it down to 20 when beaten again by Good Prospect in the St. Leger and as the saying goes, the rest is history. Turn the tables on her by September in a 10-furlong contest (I believe it was the TOBA Trophy) and she was again trounced among others in the Superstakes. Talk about unbelievable improvement!!!
@@pelorusjack5461 Definitely. Menudo went on to win the Superstakes 4 years in a row. The race in which he turned the tables on Good Prospect was the West Indian Thoroughbred Racing Association (WITRA) Classic when ridden by Shane Ellis.
Truly a remarkable front running performance by a true champion jockey (I do not regard all jockeys who top the tables at the end of a season as champion jockeys). However, MY all time greatest jockey is Emelio "Bimbo", "Willie Carson", "Iron Chest" Rodriquez.
