Without doubt, Hubert Bartley was an eminently skilled jockey who made an enormous contribution to the development of the racing product from his apprenticeship days through to his departure. We're comforted by the many memories he left us.
For all who came in late - in the Red Stripe Superstakes of '79, Narry Cartoon's elder brother - Derrick Ramgeet, won the event aboard a filly named Mento Maid. Lightweight and all. 🤗🤗🤗
Poorlittlerichgirl with Panamanian Jorge Abrego in the saddle getting the better of Wild Orchid (Chinna Bartley), Misdemeanor (Joe Buchanan) and 2yo champion All Aboard with fellow Panamanian Jorge Campines. Owned by Gee Bee and trained by Godwin Bucknor, who was co-owner with brother Gregory, Poorlittlerichgirl won at 7-1 that day and was at a stage of rapid improvement. Abrego was a talented rider, but his true potential was thwarted by a weight problem. Won many remarkable races for the top trainers at that time, too, especially when he partnered "speed horses" over a distance of ground. He even got Pax Te Cum, who was a proven sprint distance horse, to win going 7 Furlongs. That day, he made all with the big weight in a B2 contest in the day's opener and turned back Ahera (James Long), French Lyne (Al Gopie) and Prince Wonderland (Joe Woodit). Less than a length separated them at the wire. Won at 17-1 and nuff money mek lol!!! Executive Style (Percy Johnson), trained by Lloyd "Bigga" Gordon at that time, and owned by Carl Anderson, closed the double to make it an even sweeter day for me 😆. Big rider was Abrego, believe me!!! The Howard Mckenzie trained Sergeant Shultz with Bartley spreadeagled the field in the colts and geldings division, leaving the Feanny pair of Executive Style (Neville Anderson) and Mark Royale (Vishnu Singh) in his wake. Sergeant Shultz was originally trained by Godwin Bucknor and won his first few races at that barn as a 2yo.
Mark Royale with Percy Williams Vishnu Singh come 1992 and win him first race for trainer Dennis Sasso and president elect beating Percy Williams and stealing home But misdemeanors come back and win the 1 thousand Guinness with Joe Buchanan beating poor little rich girl H.Bartley and jewel of my heart with T.Simpson trainer bill Williams win the two Guinness race them the 1 and the two thousand Guinness Restless Glen
@wayneclarke9695 I believe Sergeant Shultz finished third in the Guineas with Teddy Dacosta. Sergeant Shultz was by You OK out of Four Score. I remember him running by Fontainbleu (Karl Brown) in deep stretch one day with Teddy in the saddle. Fontainbleu was a 2yo at the time and trained by Dennis Sasso.
@@pelorusjack5461 yeah 1992 going 7/1/2 furlong him upset Fontainbleu with teddy for true I believe that was him last win and last year in racing because him was very unsound horse sergeant Shultz
Jorge Campines on All Aboard FLAT like a bammy. Wish if Rohan could give us a race with him winning. Like when he won on Poor Little Rich Girl defeating Khadullah.
If my memory serves me correctly, the very first Red Stripe Superstakes was run about 1978 and won by super gelding, Legal Light under supreme jockey: Winston "Fanna" Griffiths, OD. In 1980, the race was won by the then mighty Thunderbird ridden by Fitzroy "Pumpkin" Gillespie (name changed to Glispie). 😊😊😊
A little further on Mento Maid's victory in the Superstakes for 1979; the filly had only carried about 112 lbs or so. In those days, Derrick Ramgeet - the brother of powerhouse jockey, Andrew "Narry Cartoon" Ramgeet - was definitely NO FLUKE! 😊😊😊
Interestingly, if my memory serves me correctly - Poor Little Rich Girl was Bartley's chosen ride for the Jamaica Derby of that same year, and although the jock' went overweight by about 3 or 4lbs, the animal STILL won easily.
@christopherp5300 And won that Derby also. Speaking of Mr. Lover Lover - did you know that initially the trainer had asked Emelio "Bimbo" Rodriguez to ride and he declined. Also, that to this day - this is the only Jamaican bred animal which has won both the Jamaica Derby and the T&T Derby in the same year.
@christopherp5300 Incidentally, In the T&T Derby - Mr. Lover Lover was ridden by Bajan-Canadian, Simon Husbands who is the brother of the legendary Patrick "Bomell" Husbands. 🤗🤗🤗
@@oralv.stephenson1427didn't know he won the Trinidad Derby what I know Bimbo rode him before and won and then rode a subsequent race and loose, Bartley rode Sweetness and won then rode a subsequent race and also loose, the owner then turned to Bartley to ride him in the Derby. The owner said he always wanted Bartley to ride him but his son and the trainer wanted Bimbo so he went along with the flow. Bimbo rode Sweetness in that Derby
Yrs family I really appreciate you showing us those long time races. Bartley was one of my favorites. Do you have anything with Des Smith? He won quite a few good races, I had a very strong connection with him and that always tell me when he’s going to win
