Today, we will explore the cooking oils you should avoid consuming due to their adverse effects on health. Additionally, we will discuss healthier alternatives that promote overall well-being and optimal functioning of the body.
⚠️ Polyunsaturated "vegetable" oils are not good due to their high omega-6 content, oxidative instability, processing methods, potential trans fats, and the risk of omega-3 deficiency.
⚠️ Trans fats are considered harmful to health as they raise LDL cholesterol levels, lower HDL cholesterol levels, and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
⚠️ Repeatedly heated cooking oils can become unstable, generate harmful compounds, and lead to oxidative damage, posing potential health risks when consumed.
Now, here are some of the best cooking oil options:
✅ Olive oil is preferred due to its abundance of monounsaturated fats, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties, which can promote heart health, reduce inflammation, and provide various health benefits.
✅ Quality grass-fed butter is beneficial because it contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins like A, D, and K2, and fats like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which can support heart health, boost nutrient absorption, and provide potential anti-inflammatory effects.
✅ Ghee is advantageous as it is clarified butter with a higher smoke point, no lactose or casein, and contains butyrate, which may aid digestion, support gut health, and provide a rich source of vitamins A, D, E, and K.
✅ Coconut oil offers numerous benefits due to its high content of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which can boost metabolism, support brain function, and provide antimicrobial properties, making it a healthy choice for cooking and overall well-being.

I'm 63. My parents were from Europe. They used lard and dripping, butter, etc. Grew our own vegetables, pickled stuff in the cellar, excess vegetables all went into a huge wine barrel that was just for that purpose. Recycled everything. A plastic bag was treasured, washed and hung on the washing line for continental reuse, until it fell apart. Take away food was unheard of unless it was a special occasion !!! I do blow out at times. I I bought a kilo of suger a couple of years ago. Never opened it. I dont use it enough. Don't have a tasye for it much. Then I go overboard on a million types of chocolate bars with Turkish delight, or fudge, then I'll find them stashed and way out of date, because I can only eat about one in two days. Lol.

You're a unique person. I'm from England myself but have lived in the US for almost twenty years now. We rarely go out to eat too and it's nice because it makes it special. My wife is an amazing cook we have gardens as well so we grow about half of what we eat. She's also a good baker and she has a sweet tooth so sugar doesn't last too long, especially if you use it for Coolaid. As far as oil, I like to use lard but we'll sometimes deep fry in vegetable oil that we save in the fridge, used oil is so delicious but not good for you. We mostly use an air fryer to fry things those things are awesome. Really though 95% of our food isn't fried food and if it is it's usually vegetables cooked in olive oil.

@user-mf5pv8jo4v I am far from unique. Just been brought up to know the difference between what I would want and what I NEED! I am not employed and have 20 acres that I own, 2 staghounds, a cat, 2 horses, 4 rescue reptiles that have to have special vitamins, etc. I haven't got much money left at the end of the fortnight for excess spending on STUFF that I don't need, because I have to feed me too. I work on a simple principle. If I don't have cash for what I WANT, I won't buy it, until I do. I do not have a credit card of any sort. The interest makes it 4 times more expensive. I rely on common sense. A trait much lacking in some. Thank you very much for your kind reply. Greetings from Dimboola, in Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺. May you have many years of happiness with a wonderful wife and family. It can be a bit tough without mains power, but I have done a 24 year stint learning! Just got a little wind generator to cover dull days. No guarantee of success, as I don't have enough influence to persuade nature to get wind on dull days, but get lemons? Make lemonade... LOL. Have a great day.

I buy and use a kg of sugar per week. Each tea has 4 heaping tablespoons. If no candy i just dump sugar in my mouth. Butter tarts oh so good. 3 cups of sugar to make 12 nice big butter tarts then eat all 12 for a bed time snack. Empty a tub of peanut butter into a mixing bowl. Dump in a cup of sugar and mix well with electric beaters. Tastes so much better when add a cup of sugar to a kilo of peanut butter. Buy salted butter, soften then add more salt and mix like the peanut butter. My friends that limit sugar and use substitutes are all diabetic. Heard all my life i would be diabetic. Well about 3 yrs ago they did blood work and my sugar is low side of average and all my life i eat sugar. Love brown sugar. Leave the bag opens to dry it out. Bang it hard to break into chunks. Presto brown sugar to suck on as go to the store to buy a 10 pound box of candy in bulk.

Free! Went home, dumped everything into slow cooker. All the fat can be skimmed off the surface with a ladle. On the bottom was bone broth. Did this a few times until I had enough fat to render. The best part it was all free! Got 2 healthy foods , bone broth and tallow.

The dietary recommendations and guidelines have evolved over time based on the available scientific evidence and research. In the past, there was a shift away from saturated fats like butter and toward vegetable oils, including trans fats and seed oils, due to concerns about heart health. However, as our understanding of nutrition and health has advanced, there has been a reevaluation of these recommendations.
Saturated fats, like those found in butter, were once thought to contribute to heart disease, but recent research has suggested that their impact on heart health may not be as clear-cut as previously believed. On the other hand, trans fats, often found in partially hydrogenated oils, have been shown to have negative health effects and are now widely recognized as harmful.
Olive oil, which is rich in monounsaturated fats, has been associated with potential health benefits, particularly in Mediterranean-style diets. Similarly, certain seed oils like flaxseed oil and fish oils are sources of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
It's important to note that dietary recommendations can vary based on individual health conditions, preferences, and goals. As our understanding of nutrition continues to evolve, it's always a good idea to stay informed and consult with healthcare professionals or registered dietitians for personalized advice.

Yeah I'm not one to fry things often but we save and filter our oil and keep it in the fridge to use again and again until I think it smells off or it's just been too long. Used oil just tastes so darn good to me. If we fry, which is rare it's almost always in an air fryer though but certain things need to be deep fried. I highly doubt we fry anything often enough to cause any health issues but when we do, boy it's deep fried in some vegetable oil that's been used five times lol. I prefer lard but my wife says it smells like wet dog. I use lard for eggs and for pancakes mostly. When we fry veggies it's always olive oil but that has such a low smoke temp so you have to be careful and we usually use olive oil uncooked to add to things.

      @HeartDiseaseCode  10 місяців тому +2

Absolutely, organic lard can indeed be a good cooking fat option. Lard is rich in monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, which is also found in olive oil and has been associated with potential health benefits. Organic lard can have a higher smoke point compared to some other fats, making it suitable for high-heat cooking methods.
As with any cooking fat, it's important to consider the source and quality of the lard. Opting for organic lard from pasture-raised or grass-fed animals can help ensure a higher nutrient profile. Moderation and variety in your cooking fats can contribute to a well-rounded diet.
Remember that individual dietary preferences and needs can vary, so it's a good idea to choose the cooking fats that align with your health goals and suit your taste preferences. If you have any more questions or need further information, feel free to ask!

Very useful if you've got deep pockets. There's a reason people who aren't too well off financially (and that's a large part of the population now) buy refined vegetable oils. Butter, ghee, virgin olive and coconut oil have soared in price since the Covid fiasco a couple of years back. I paid £5.10 for a 500ml bottle of Napolina EV olive oil last week, weigh that against £1.85 for a litre of vegetable oil or £2.15 for the same volume sunflower oil. It isn't rocket science to realise which one those in a lower income bracket will go for.
Until you can make the 'good' things affordable to the plebs, poorer people are destined to suffer poorer health.

Research on these and other people indicate that the issue is not the fat that causes heart disease, but the lack of sufficient fresh vegetables, especially highly coloured ones.

Hi, how about oxidation of pumpkinseeds oil? Thanks so much for your video! Thumbs up 👍

    • @HeartDiseaseCode
      @HeartDiseaseCode  9 місяців тому +1

Hello! We're glad you enjoyed the video. Pumpkin seed oil, like many other oils, can be susceptible to oxidation over time. Oxidation occurs when oils are exposed to air, light, and heat, leading to changes in flavor, color, and nutritional quality. To help prevent the oxidation of pumpkin seed oil:
Store Properly: Keep the oil in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A pantry or cupboard is a good choice.
Choose Dark Bottles: If purchasing pumpkin seed oil, opt for brands that use dark-colored glass bottles. This helps to block out light, which can accelerate oxidation.
Use Quickly: Oils, including pumpkin seed oil, are best when consumed relatively quickly after opening. While they usually have a longer shelf life, using them within a reasonable timeframe can help maintain freshness.
Minimize Air Exposure: Seal the bottle tightly after each use to minimize air exposure, which can lead to oxidation.
Smell and Taste Test: If you notice an off smell or taste, the oil may have oxidized and could be past its prime.
By taking these steps, you can help prolong the freshness and quality of your pumpkin seed oil. Just remember that all oils, including pumpkin seed oil, will eventually begin to degrade, so it's a good practice to buy in smaller quantities and use them within a reasonable timeframe.

I have nothing against coconut oil with the exception of the fact that I'm allergic to it. I am surprised however that you avoided the fats that people have used for thousands of years, the animal fat that we use to cook with. The meat fats, lard and tallow. What are you afraid of?

    • @HeartDiseaseCode
      @HeartDiseaseCode  10 місяців тому +14

We apologize if it seemed that we avoided discussing animal fats like lard and tallow. Animal fats, historically used in cooking for thousands of years, have been an essential part of various culinary traditions worldwide. It's important to consider that dietary practices can vary significantly across cultures and regions.
Here are some points to consider regarding animal fats:
Culinary Traditions: Animal fats, such as lard (rendered pork fat) and tallow (rendered beef or mutton fat), have been used in traditional cooking for their unique flavor and ability to enhance the taste of dishes.
Cooking Properties: Animal fats have a high smoke point, making them suitable for high-temperature cooking methods like frying and roasting.
Nutritional Composition: Animal fats primarily consist of saturated fats, which have been a topic of discussion in nutrition. While some studies have linked high saturated fat intake to an increased risk of heart disease, the relationship between dietary fats and health is complex and can vary based on overall diet and individual factors.
Moderation: Like any fat source, the key to using animal fats is moderation. Incorporating them into a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods is essential for overall health.
It's important to recognize that dietary recommendations and perspectives on fats have evolved over time as scientific research has advanced. While certain fats like saturated fats from animal sources were once widely used, modern dietary guidelines often encourage a balance of different fats and an emphasis on plant-based sources of fats, like olive oil, avocados, nuts, and seeds.
For individuals with specific dietary needs or health concerns, consulting with a registered dietitian or healthcare professional can provide personalized guidance on the most suitable dietary choices, including fat sources.
Ultimately, individual dietary preferences, cultural influences, and health considerations can all influence the types of fats used in cooking. Making informed choices and being mindful of portion sizes and overall dietary patterns are key to maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet that supports optimal health.

In the video they did mention with butters or saturated fats the quality all along the food chain resulted in a change of health benefits. Is it the same with animal fats?

Natural peanut butter, made from just peanuts and sometimes a pinch of salt, can be a nutritious and delicious addition to a balanced diet. It is a good source of healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Here are some key points about natural peanut butter:
Healthy Fats: Natural peanut butter is rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are heart-healthy fats that can help improve cholesterol levels and support overall cardiovascular health.
Protein: Peanut butter is a good source of plant-based protein, making it a valuable addition to vegetarian or vegan diets.
Nutrients: It contains essential nutrients like vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants, which are beneficial for overall health.
Fiber: Peanut butter contains dietary fiber, which aids digestion and can help promote a feeling of fullness, making it a satisfying addition to meals and snacks.
No Hydrogenated Oils: Natural peanut butter typically does not contain hydrogenated oils or trans fats, which are unhealthy fats associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
Caloric Density: While natural peanut butter is nutritious, it is calorie-dense, meaning it provides a relatively high number of calories in a small serving. This is something to consider if you are watching your calorie intake.
For most people, including natural peanut butter as part of a balanced diet can be a nutritious choice. However, individuals with peanut allergies should avoid peanut butter and any products containing peanuts.
If you have specific dietary concerns or health conditions, such as diabetes or weight management, it's essential to consider portion sizes and balance peanut butter with other food choices to meet your nutritional needs.
As with any food, moderation is key. Enjoying natural peanut butter as part of a varied diet, along with other nutrient-dense foods, can contribute to overall well-being and satisfaction in your eating habits.
If you have any specific health concerns or dietary questions, consulting with a registered dietitian or healthcare professional can provide personalized guidance tailored to your individual needs and health goals. They can help you make informed choices that support your well-being and enjoyment of food.

You're correct! Beef tallow and pork lard are traditional fats that have been used for deep-frying for generations. They have high smoke points and add a delicious flavor to fried foods. When using these fats for deep-frying chicken and wings, it's important to ensure that the oil is heated to the appropriate temperature and that the food is cooked thoroughly to achieve a crispy and golden exterior.
Using healthy and stable cooking fats like beef tallow and pork lard can be a better alternative to highly processed vegetable oils that may be less stable at high temperatures and can form harmful compounds when heated. However, as with any cooking method, moderation is key, and it's important to balance fried foods with a variety of nutrient-rich foods in your diet.

We appreciate your feedback! Avocado oil is indeed a healthy option that is rich in monounsaturated fats and has a high smoke point, making it suitable for cooking at higher temperatures. It also contains various beneficial nutrients and antioxidants.
As for processed coconut oil, it's important to note that the processing methods can impact its health benefits. Virgin or extra-virgin coconut oil is less processed and retains more of the natural compounds found in coconuts, such as lauric acid. On the other hand, refined coconut oil undergoes additional processing and may have a higher smoke point but could contain fewer beneficial compounds.
Both avocado oil and virgin coconut oil can be good choices for cooking, and you can choose based on your taste preferences and cooking needs.

It's silly to think coconut oil can be a match to extra virgin olive oil. Many Mediterranean countries top the ranks in life expectancy and over 100 people. In the tropical countries, sadly, people live much less. How could you compare cardiovascular diseases which increase over time and conclude coconut oil is the best. It's like saying any tropical fruit is healthier than apples. Let me point out the Mediterranean countries are the less rich in Europe so they live longer not because of the money but essentially because of the Mediterranean diet

Lard is a type of cooking fat that is rendered from pork fat. It has been used traditionally in various cuisines for frying, baking, and cooking. When using lard for cooking, especially at higher temperatures, it's important to be aware of its smoke point.
The smoke point of an oil or fat is the temperature at which it starts to break down and produce visible smoke. When an oil or fat reaches its smoke point, it can develop an unpleasant taste and potentially release harmful compounds.
For lard, the smoke point can vary depending on its processing and purity, but it generally falls within the range of 370-450°F (188-232°C). This means that lard is suitable for most cooking methods, including frying, sautéing, and roasting, as long as the temperature doesn't exceed its smoke point.
If you're planning to use lard for cooking, it's important to follow these guidelines:
Check the Label: When purchasing lard, check the label for information about its smoke point. Some types of lard may have a higher or lower smoke point based on how they were processed.
Monitor Temperature: When cooking with lard, avoid heating it above its smoke point. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature of the cooking oil/fat to prevent it from reaching levels that could cause it to smoke.
Avoid Overheating: If you notice that lard is smoking or emitting a strong odor, it's an indication that it's overheating. Remove the pan from heat and allow it to cool before continuing to cook.
Use for High-Heat Cooking: Lard's higher smoke point makes it suitable for high-heat cooking methods, such as frying and roasting.
Store Properly: Store lard in a cool, dark place to help preserve its quality and prevent it from going rancid.
While lard can be a flavorful and versatile cooking fat, it's important to use it responsibly and be mindful of its smoke point to ensure safe and enjoyable cooking results.

Here's the problem with this video:
It shows no randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which is the gold standard in clinical research.
In vitro studies, animal experiments and observational studies are relatively weak compared to RCTs.
There is a video by "Nutrition Made Simple!" called: "THIS is what Canola Oil does to Your Body (the EVIDENCE no one shows!!!)"
    Here are the key takeaways:
Glucose Metabolism: Canola oil doesn't seem to have a negative impact on glucose metabolism. Studies have shown no significant effect on fasting glucose, and some even found improvements in fasting insulin and insulin resistance.
Cooking with Canola Oil: Trials have shown that cooking with canola oil doesn't seem to affect glucose metabolism negatively. Even refined canola oil used in substantial amounts didn't show harmful effects.
Body Weight: Evidence indicates that canola oil does not induce weight gain. Some studies even reported a reduction in body weight, particularly in participants with type 2 diabetes or when compared to saturated fat-rich foods. However, the effect was small and not entirely convincing.
Fatty Liver Disease: In a trial with participants having non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), both olive oil and canola oil improved fatty liver, with over 76% of participants on canola oil reverting to normal liver grading.
Inflammation: The video found no compelling evidence showing that canola oil causes inflammation in living humans. Some in vitro assays suggested an increase in oxidation products, but in vivo studies did not support this.
Oxidation: Canola oil doesn't seem to cause oxidation in vivo. However, it's advised to avoid very high temperatures like deep frying and to favor sautéing instead.
Cancer Risk: Large prospective studies report that people cooking with canola have a lower risk of dying of cancer than those cooking with butter, and not higher than people cooking with olive oil.
Comparison to Nuts and Seeds: There's limited data comparing canola oil to unprocessed sources of fat like nuts and seeds. One trial found no significant difference between nuts and a canola oil-enriched cereal in various health metrics.
Large Trials: Some famous trials like Lyon and Finger used canola oil as part of their intervention and found benefits like lower risk of cardiovascular outcomes and improvement in cognitive function.
Personal Preference: The video emphasizes that personal choice matters. Some may prefer cold-pressed canola oil, while others may choose not to consume it at all. The video encourages asking for evidence from those claiming canola oil is toxic.
Funding and Bias: The video also touches on funding sources for the studies, mentioning that out of about two dozen references, five studies had some ties to the industry, but excluding them wouldn't fundamentally change the picture.
Conclusion: Most of the evidence seems to point to the safety of canola oil and even some benefits. There are areas of uncertainty, and more specific questions may require further research. The video emphasizes that personal choice and preference are valid and that scientific evidence should guide decisions.
The video provides a comprehensive and balanced view of the subject, considering various aspects of canola oil's impact on health, cooking practices, and personal preferences.

It's interesting to hear about your long-term experience with using cooking oil in your diet. Cooking oils are an essential part of many cuisines and can contribute to the flavor and texture of dishes. While cooking oils are a common ingredient, it's important to note that the type and amount of oil consumed can impact heart health over time.
Using cooking oils in moderation and choosing healthier options like olive oil, canola oil, or avocado oil can be beneficial for heart health. These oils are rich in unsaturated fats, which are considered heart-healthy fats. On the other hand, consuming excessive amounts of oils high in saturated or trans fats might have potential negative effects on cardiovascular health.
It's great that you've not experienced any adverse health effects, but it's always a good idea to stay informed about the types of fats you're consuming and to maintain a balanced diet that supports your long-term well-being. Each person's health journey is unique, and we're glad to hear you're feeling well!
