    I watched one of your older tutorials from years and years ago about this "magic SSL E-channel" and have used it ever since, but I do remember you using the "Split" function in the filter in the older one

    That sounds really good! Of course the initial recording was already good, which helps. Plus, I bet that using the bluey actually makes a difference. There's a very clear sound difference between the black and the blue that makes it really good for vocals, at least in that Waves version of the 1176. The one in the CLA Mixhub does that too

    i would love to see the Lead bus plugins!! cause no EQ? or was it already pre eq on the record? I never used a boost on 400~500 on the vocals( thats too boomy for my taste) but i can be explained if it was already filtered in the recording(ops i cut too much, lets put some of it back)

    Hi Kevin, Dennis L here. Question on the SSL ,CLA 76, Melodyne tutorial. Were real drums used or ???? If real drums, what were the drum mics and maybe a look at your EQ on Toms and as well as compression,. Also was compression used in Tracking and was compression used again in mixing?? If you used combo of miked drums and SLATE could you let us know how you setup for SLATE drums..... i.e. separate channel for SLATE drums and how you use them, i.e. any compression used in the SLATE channels and anything else like EQ etc. Oh yes great tutorials Kevin. And what is the lead vox mic and preamp? Vocal efx ?? Thank you.

    • @MixCoach
      @MixCoach  3 роки тому

      Hey Dennis... If you remember, some of the drums were pretty crunchy... so the snare is a LOT of Slate black beauty. I'm not sure of the vocal chain and how it was recorded. Pretty sure the vocal verb is the 140 from Universal Audio and delay is H-delay.

    • @erickarge1838

      Google and UA-cam the principle of “serial” compression. Many people track with some light compression then mix with multiple compressors to keep things more transparent then even more compression on the mix bus. Multiple layers of compression is very useful and common.

    • @malapauta
      @malapauta 2 роки тому +1

      Im no expert but you should always pick stereo since that’s where it’s gonna be sounding everywhere

    • @DanielPestanaTranslations
      @DanielPestanaTranslations 2 роки тому +3

      If you record the track in mono, use mono, if you record the track in stereo, use stereo. You’ll be able to distinguish them if your track shows only one waveform, it’s mono. If it shows two waveforms, it’s stereo. There are also plugins that show something like Mono >> Stereo. Those will “change” your mono track to stereo.

    What we wanted to see? What about that, ALL, button? That's my favorite setting for, solo vocals. And I push hard into it. Because all I had was a, Rev D, 1976 original,, UREI, 1176's. That's plural. I had 5. Kind of like, CLA. But no blue stripes for me. Black ones and silver ones, my choice. And then a little, simple, switch and capacitor. For a high frequency limiter, high frequency De-Esser, mod. I haven't wanted to live without. Since 1979. And the young boys at Universal Audio. Don't know of such, factory recommended, UREI, mod. And had the nerve to tell me. They don't think anybody would want to use that! What!? What a couple of rude morons. Bill Putnam never got to raise. The nerve!
    And so for any, actual, hardware, 1176 clone. I recommend you get a, Hairball. 100% authentic circuit. 100% authentic sound. And for only a few hundred dollars, each. You don't need anything else! And you don't need an, LA-2. The tubes all sound crappy today. Nothing sounds like those original, Telephunken vacuum tubes. So I won't waste my time. With bad sounding tubes. And an, LA-3A. Is simply marvelous. Also a favorite of, my colleague, Bob Clearmountain! Yes I've worked with Bob. He prefers the LA-3A. Like I used to have. Used to. I needed the cash. So it's gone. After owning it for, 40 years. And all original and pristine like new recapped, condition. And I'll miss it, dearly. It looked pretty in my tracks. That and my, LA-4. That pair, also gone. I get everything in pairs. I like doing stereo.
    But since nobody really cares about the sound anymore. And they really don't. Just about anything is fair game to use, these days. Like SSL 4000 emulations in the software. Negates the need for a pain in the ass to service. And intermittent pops and fizzy's. You don't get with the software version. And won't miss. Or, the constant servicing.
    And so, a decent, microphone preamp. Into an average equalizer. Followed by an, 1176 clone. That I then. Plug that into a, Allison Research, KEPEX-1 a.k.a. the KEPEX 500. Downward expander. And I expand down. By about the same amount. As the game reduction.. Hitting the limiter. And set the threshold. On their breath. And automatic breath ducking or removal, automatically. In real time. And an overall tightening up. Of the, sonic character. And more than, extremely effective. It's game changing! And similar to what is commonly done. In the voice tracks of, Hollywood movie stars. As that KEPEX makes an enormous difference!
    Though some people just process there spoken word audio. With an old Dolby, A-361, type A. Tape noise reduction unit. Not used for tape noise reduction anymore. Used as a 4 band limiter and voice processor. With the additional, CAT-22 card. That says, Hollywood Voice Processor. And a remote control unit. With numerous slide faders. Where Hollywood and engineers like myself. Highly and aggressively, process the vocal. To fool the listener into thinking it sounds, totally natural! When there is not one single little thing, natural, about it, anymore. But the listener is none the wiser. Because we make it sound so natural! That's what Audio Engineering, is all about. As you don't get natural sound by doing nothing. You get nasty beginner sound that way. And obviously an amateur.
    So I like tossing that 1176 into, aggressive, 50:1. Same for the drums. And the 1176 release time can get, too fast. Then everything starts to sound, muddled. And nondescript.
    So I say, Jack up the high frequencies on the voice. 8 or 10 DB at, 10 or 12, kilohertz shelving. And switch on the high frequency limiter mod on the 1176 clone. And you'll wonder how you lived without that all your lifelong? It takes it to the next level beyond this, lovely and fruitful demonstration. As this works well also and for much less money. Since nothing is 19 inches wide. But a bunch of ones and zeros, instead. And those are really tiny. But they can sound incredibly large. Because they are, in the end, electrons. And your sound moves at the speed of light. While going 1100 ft./s. Through the air. And monitoring with, a Positive Pressure Wave Design Control Room. And no self-professed or college grad, audio engineer, knows what I'm talking about? As they don't. They flunk. Their knowledge is woefully misaligned.
    I could go on but you need to figure out some things, for yourselves. By listening. And not thinking just because you followed the wiring diagram in the manuals. That, wiring diagram is mathematically correct and acoustically, TOTALLY WRONG! Totally backwards. Everyone's speakers are actually, sucking inward. Not projecting, outward. Yet when I ask everyone which way the woofers should be moving? They always get the answer right. But they are listening on, two channels of inverted speaker.
    This is where in Provo Audio. There is a difference. Between Phase and Polarity. They are not the same! Though, they could be thought, together as similar. But they apply to, two different, applications. And dummy sort of audio engineers get easily confused by this. Even, Electrical Engineers. Even Acoustic Engineers. It's totally mindless! Totally clueless! And they really have no idea what they are listening to. Golden ear, experts. They don't know what they're listening to. And I have proved it time and time again through the decades. People are just that stupid. And no ability to think on their own. If they are not spoonfed. With a book and some candy and repeat after me. This sounds terrific! Even when it doesn't.. And people will believe you are a real, audiogineer! Along with your mommy and daddy and little brother. But you don't know what you're listening to. You only think you do. Because you agree with the others that also think that they do.
    And so in the end. My control room has pissed-off some, acoustic engineers. Because they know mathematically speaking. There is absolutely no way on this planet. My control room monitoring should sound, this incredibly great! Because I know what I'm doing! I know what it's supposed to sound like. Nobody else knows that! And that's certifiable, idiotic. But the way self-professed experts are. Especially the ones with the, fancy college degrees. They went to college to spend tens of thousands of dollars. To get instruction how to play a video computer game with audio software. Oh boy! What talent! Yeah what talent? You don't know what you're listening to?
    You might learn from me. Be careful!
