    Two things! Firstly, sorry for the delay today in getting the podcast published. We had some technical difficulties. Secondly, we had to record this week's podcast earlier than usual, and so of course that means the biggest news of the week, Sigma and Tamron being allowed on Canon RF mount, didn't make the cut. Stay tuned for next week's episode to hear our thoughts!

    Early Fuji DSLRs used Nikon F mount and supported Nikon F lenses although they didn’t make any lenses of their own for Nikon F which would have been neat. I have some Fuji F mount DSLRs and they still work with modern Nikon F mount lenses first party and third party. Mostly. I think the electronic aperture ones don’t work but I don’t have any of those to test

    Question: I have a 3 week road trip across the US for my son's graduation in May. On a fantastical whim I bought a Sigma fpL and 24mm f/3.5. This is to be a travelogue camera for stills and short videos and/or cinemagraphs. It is to be my main camera for the trip as I plan to leave the heavy Pentax K1 behind. Did I make an unforgivable, harebrained mistake?

    The release news about the Insta360 X4 last week Monday caught me by surprise, and I got quickly interested due to the significantly upgraded specs. My initial feel of 8K translating to a real life usable 5.7K turned out to be on point, and that’s quite a bit more data to choose from than recording in 4K and having to crop into that.
    While I’m not about to use this camera for any of the presented action styles, I still see a lot of potential in recording 360 at high settings when entering vacation regions without knowing what’s about to happen, especially when wanting to travel light as with the next overseas trip. So just holding this thing up and deciding later on the perspective seems like a smart thing to do, especially since it’s waterproof.
    The other more regular use case scenario is something that was nowhere mentioned, whether in the manufacturer’s examples nor in your podcast, and that is putting this inconspicuous device center stage for recording live concerts. That way my son can record himself with his his band and then later choose the angle. I see a lot of potential here, especially while it is quasi no overhead for the band to capture these memories. Apparently the low light issues might dampen my excitement down the road, but here again I’ve set the specs to 5.7K/30fps with the expectation that the footage will be usable. And more importantly that the camera will last through a full set which I have tested: At room temperature, the Insta360 X4 easily went through 86 minutes of constant recording at this setting. Yes, it was quite warm, but it was still going, nowhere near shutting down on its own, battery was still going strong. That’s in stark contrast to the two GoPro Hero 8 I bought when they hit the market, and they have been nothing but a huge disappointment and big waste of money since they can’t handle more than 20 minutes of any setting at a time, completely useless for my needs.
    Will see how this holds up over time, but after two initial tries I’ve decided to keep this for the family, and that means something.

  • @victorlin4645

    For the X4 I would definitely like to see dynamic range comparisons and limitations in 8K.
    As you know, it uses the same 1/2" 48MP sensor as the X3, so Insta360's Active HDR mode cannot be used in 8K mode on the X4 since 8K shooting means you cannot break the sensor into two logical sensors and run two separate simultaneous exposures on the 48MP sensor for real-time Active HDR, while in 5.7k you can.
    So shooting at 8K means you necessarily take a dynamic range hit compared to 5.7K Active HDR, but by how much?

    I own an X1 and an X2 and use them both because there are optimal conditions and use cases for both. I did not upgrade to an X3 because at the time the consensus was the quality was not that big of an improvement between the X2 and X3. Is this considered minimal improvement from X3 to X4 and is it worth the upgrade from X2?

    • @Windsurfingaddict
      @Windsurfingaddict Місяць тому

      I have owed the X2 and the X3 is much better in so many ways, X2 screen sucks and is clunky and tiny, x3 screen is a huge improvement, the X4 is going to be better in that you have 5.7k 60FPS for smoother video and slow motion improvements, and longer battery life in 5.7k . 8K is more like 2k realistically once you have reframed it as 8k is both lens combined. Just hope the weight and extra size on the X4 is not an issue for using in fast moving action. The X3 new and used prices are now good value 🥳🥳

      A lot of us remember the petapixel who published an article where the author built his own simulation of sensor technologies with zero knowledge of how they worked and blasted … I want to say sigma foveon??? Cameras for the flaws his simulation found despite those flaws not being present in the real cameras … because his simulations weren’t real. Then doubled down over two or three more articles including one where he turned the in camera saturation and sharpness settings to max and zoomed in on a face from the corner of a particularly smeary lens that was, I kid you not, no more than 20 or 30 pixels high to prove that the cameras made skin look “waxy”.
      This was one example of the kind of garbage petapixel published regularly and the short term outrage boost has permanently damaged the brand in the minds of many.

    Insta360 X4 8K still is a bit disappointment... basically the same sensor with more pixels, which is just marketing fluff (and some more sharpness in perfect lighting). In the northern part of Europe, there are darker times for most of the year (8-9 months). In the forest or during winter, this "update" is basically useless... We could only use this in the outdoor and summer. To this end, I would prefer at least the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 or a small mirrorless camera to achieve at least somewhat better results. If I ever buy a 360 camera, I might opt for one with a 1" sensor, if new versions are released someday, It is good to have options out there, I would like to pay more to get better results. To be honest if you want to have good action camera get one that has 60fps.. This X4 has only 30fps at max resolution.
