People ripping on Mark saying he's not a good bass player: True he's no Flea or Victor Wooten, but he is a good singer/song writer. He also just knows music and has been a producer for other bands. He's such a nice guy and promotes up and coming bands. Plus he is very entertaining live, if his bass lines were too difficult he wouldn't be able to dance around, play, and sing at the same time :)
Tbh hes not even a bad bass player, hes written a bunch of great bass lines over their nearly 30 year career, Carousel, Mutt, Always just to name a few
Jackson and Charvel did that a lot in the 80's . I think Lee Sklar and Don Carruthers did it around the end of the 70's when Lee had his parts bass made. Truly is how that layout should work. It's genius. But there is perks to the original setup.
The funny part here is that they didn't move the top pickup. It's in the same spot. All they did was pull the bottom pickup close to the neck. This would do nothing to take the woffie out of his e string. If they did a proper swap the pickup would be at the rear of the pick guard.
@@TinoR626it’s also not a 1-for-1 comparison either, because the pickups on a Hoppus bass aren’t technically in the “sweet spot” like a normal P. I can’t speak for his Jaguars, but I know that on the jazz bass version of the Hoppus bass, the whole pickup is slightly closer to the neck to prevent it from sitting too close to the edge of the pickguard.
Insane idea how he switched his pick up position to get the frequencies even. I'm not a fan of blink 182 but you learn so much from videos like this. Plus cid
Yeah not a bad idea. I use a different method to accomplish that and it definitely helps when I record in the studio. I won't get tracks that pop because the frequency is too high. I put light gauge strings for my E and A strings and then thicker gauges on the D and G. Works fantastically. I also use a compressor to help smooth it out some. On my fender aerodyne I lowered the pickup that is placed for the E and A strings as well. I utilize all my strings when playing bass and the D and G string sometimes are too quiet, since I play fingers. I have a Spector but it's a diff pickup config than this.
Agreed. I follow the Instagram account maintained by the guy who gave him this sticker on the 2016 California tour. I had a feeling I'd be seeing that sticker in this video. I was also hoping he'd give SHOUT OUT to the guy who runs the aforementioned Instagram account.
Song @ 1:12 is Desert Storm by Blitz kids. Still searching for the first song but given that there is two other songs from Blitz kids, I'm guessing it could be one of theirs too...
tekkara theyre just milking it super hard with matt. Their music got so bland after he joined, and toms innovations were a perfect opportunity for this "refresh" you're talking about.
People rip on marl but he’s probably one of the first bassists to actually make a change in basses and knows his tone 😂😂😂also a cool thing about make is he keeps his bass playing in the middle not to boring and simple but not to complicated
fuzzychewbacca I know he has a couple complicated basslines but they're not much. When I started playing bass his basslines were some of the first I learned and I put a lot of time into learning a lot of them. I really like playing his bass lines, they're really fun and they make it easy to sing and move around.
What Mark says about people not inverting the P-bass pickups before is not true. Yamaha has been doing just that since the seventies. Also, Fender did a Rocco Prestia signature bass which had the P-bass pickup inverted for the same reason he mentions.
Actually, that's not how an endorsement works. With an endorsement the deal is that you play those guys' instruments and their instruments only, in return they will promote you, sell your name, make it known whenever there's a new album coming through all kinds of media. And don't forget when you're in an endorsement with Fender, you also sell Fenders, because people will go. "What does he play, a Fender, I'd better go check them out!" There's hardly any cash involved here. It's also why a player like Keith Richards doesn't have an endorsement deal with fender, because it would mean he'd have to stop playing his Gibson and Zemaites guitars live.
Sorry to pop your bubble Mark, but Yamaha had the reversed Pickup configuration in the original Broad Bass series in the late 1970's. So it looks like you ran with their idea.
hahaha i love his adjectives "doingky" "woofy"
I read this comment as he said woofy.
Straight up terms in the studio though.
yup they're goofy but legit terms

Yeah not everyone want to be a virtuoso kind of guy. He has his own path and taste in the music zpectrum
You don't got to be the best or make things overly complicated to make good music. Good music is just good music at the end of the day.
If you listen to the bass track for feeling this you’ll understand how he’s a genius
Tbh hes not even a bad bass player, hes written a bunch of great bass lines over their nearly 30 year career, Carousel, Mutt, Always just to name a few
Meanwhile flea going crazy in stage
Nice he showed his gear himself rather than the techs.
That inverted split is genius. Yes, that should be the standard split coil layout. It really does even everything out.
Jackson and Charvel did that a lot in the 80's . I think Lee Sklar and Don Carruthers did it around the end of the 70's when Lee had his parts bass made. Truly is how that layout should work. It's genius. But there is perks to the original setup.

Wow... He seems so focused and passionate about his basses
Fighting The Gravity is about that LSD story (fun fact)
Ohhh?
Mark wrote "Fighting the Gravity" about his acid experience.
Mark is a very humble person you can tell that by the way he speaks
Me: "Oh hey, those are pretty cute drawings on the bass!"
Mark: "I think this character is a walking hit of LSD,"
Me:

Spector Basses have been doing that long before Mark Hoppus.

Mark was always very cool when we talked at the radio station, very cool!!
He seems like a great guy. Great pickup cfg idea btw.
Spector Basses have been doing that long before Mark Hoppus.
Blink 182 is one of my favorite bands.
I've seen them once and really want to see them again.
John Rondeau no you don't deserve to go!!!
I preferred his fender jazz bass style he has played for years.
i liked that older signature as well. I swear i think i bought the last new one on Musicians Friend a year ago. But the jaguar one seems cool.
Kynan's Music i
Yeah jazz are nicer imo
My guess is that he wanted a new chapter with the band once Matt joined. New start = New instrument.
The blue one is lovely
The pink one is just too awesome!!
No mention of the sticker on the relic'd bass...wow
Yes I've seen it. I know its about the basses but I'm just surprised that it was not mentioned as a cool addition.
Agreed. I follow the Instagram account maintained by the guy who gave him this sticker on the 2016 California tour. I had a feeling I'd be seeing that sticker in this video. I was also hoping he'd give SHOUT OUT to the guy who runs the aforementioned Instagram account.
OldSchoolAddict what’s the account called?
He probably did but the people editing the video needed to trim the fat. Its a gear check not a trinket check.
I've been wanting to see his new jag basses up close. So awesome.
Get well soon mark
Well said Papa Hoppus.
Been waiting forever for a rig rundown
DUDE, my Dad and I have sat for hours before talking about re-configuring my p bass pickup like that!
joseph walton liar
Spector Basses have been doing that long before Mark Hoppus.
I like the P-Bass pickup inversion and it's the same idea as changing the angle of the bridge pickup on a Strat or Tele.
Song @ 1:12 is Desert Storm by Blitz kids. Still searching for the first song but given that there is two other songs from Blitz kids, I'm guessing it could be one of theirs too...
His basses are so cool
I've loved Blink since the beginning, well before dude ranch. But the mark, tom and travis years were the best. Sorry matt.
yep
tekkara theyre just milking it super hard with matt. Their music got so bland after he joined, and toms innovations were a perfect opportunity for this "refresh" you're talking about.
Tom wanted to turn blink-182 into ColdPlay. Would you like it?
The Mark, Tom and Scott years were the best for blink IMO.
Wouldn't a poser be pretty much the opposite, someone who pretends to like the bands new music even though they don't?
dude still looks cool as ever in his 40s...
Shame he doesn't play the Fender VI anymore.
Thomas Pappalardo Or the Sting
Lol what he never played it live he just used it to record a couple things on the self titled album
Shame he doesn't play the Stingray anymore
Hugh Jass man, I think he did play with it once, live performance of I miss you, 2004
People rip on marl but he’s probably one of the first bassists to actually make a change in basses and knows his tone 😂😂😂also a cool thing about make is he keeps his bass playing in the middle not to boring and simple but not to complicated
That second bass is sooo cool
But what about his amps?
He uses Kemper
Germán Roa New Vintage Amps I think
troy poisson that's the brand of his cabinets
Germán Roa he might use a profiling amp on tour but definitely not in the studio
actually he uses Kemper Profiler Rack + Profiler Remote + Avalon U5 1-channel Active Preamp / Direct Box
right at 1:38 - thats the dancing cup from the ATHF movie. so yes... a hit of lsd as mark said. lol
When is he gonna release those basses as a signature?
Christian Rocha For real. I want a hot pink Jaguar!
@@jmattbassplaya90 Allan Corona on Instagram
Song 0:37???
L.A Martinez I want it
First bass i ever got was a mark hoppus signature seafoam green fender
Still my favourite bass player
Mark you’re soooo cool!
Entwistle and lee sklar both flipped the p pickup too, “mark”of a genius
Singing the punk blink 182 yeahhhh❤
Damn i love mark!!!! Inspiration forever dawgs!!
Look at 1:31. Is that the compartment battery for an active bass?
I have so many questions lol, why no more signature bass? why jagbasses now? I miss the jazz
Mark Hoppus is my Bass Idol
Dominic Crider Really? Lol
Why? I like his style but not much to be idolized. 😂
Marco Carretero Listen to Carousel, Wrecked Him, anddd that's all I can remember haha but yeah... Your opinion might change.
fuzzychewbacca I know he has a couple complicated basslines but they're not much. When I started playing bass his basslines were some of the first I learned and I put a lot of time into learning a lot of them. I really like playing his bass lines, they're really fun and they make it easy to sing and move around.
was my first concert and ill never forget it
chris mata nice. My first show was angels and airwaves. Was also fortunate enough to see their last show with Tom in Las Vegas.
S2kTi sounds better than seeing skiba lol
chris mata haha well it's just different. I have seen them with skiba and it def was a great performance. But with Tom it was just classic
S2kTi exactly
Grats :)
Since the jazz signature was discontinued could we get the pink one as a new signature model ???
0:18
song?
Walt do you find song?
@@chost7777 nop :(
Amazing 🎉
What's the song playing at the beginning? The punk one
Up
I've ALWAYS mounted my Precision pickups in the reverse position. It has so much more punch, and definition in the tone they produce.
Spector Basses have been doing that long before Mark Hoppus.
I never thought about running both pickups through a single volume, unless he just has the j-bass pickup disconnected and along for the ride.
I played on Travis' kit that night in Columbus. The bass sounds so great on stage . Even from behind the drums
So if it has no tone knob, is the tone "glued" to 10 or 0?
glued to 10
What Mark says about people not inverting the P-bass pickups before is not true. Yamaha has been doing just that since the seventies.
Also, Fender did a Rocco Prestia signature bass which had the P-bass pickup inverted for the same reason he mentions.
I was thinking the same thing, "Yamaha, Ibanez/Soundgear, Carvin?🤔"
I have an old 90's Soundgear with the inverted P pickup. That always made more sense to me than the traditional Fender configuration.
Warwicks too
Lee Sklar! A real bass player. He did it decades ago. It's not that uncommon now.
What else is he lying about? How Tom left the band perhaps?
Smart on those pickups! That's a great idea :D
Love those Jags!!!! Matt must have made him switch from Jazz to Jag and he was right!
Fighting the Gravity is based on Mark's LSD experience
What is the music played in the background?
Daniel Fourie dude I see you everywhere, love your videos btw!!!
Juliana Peters hahah thanks so much!
The later song is called Keep Swinging by Blitz Kids
Daniel Fourie I think it's natives by blink 182
Haha it's not Natives, but it kind sounds like it
Songs used in this video ?
Darude - Sandstorm
I'mma do that inverted pbass setup on my short scale
What the back song??
Anyone know where I can get the same pickguard he has on his Jaguar’s?
How does he not use his signature basses anymore?
Those cartoons on the blue one remind me of Simple Creatures. Reckon it inspired the SC videos??
john entwistle from the who had that p-bass configuration
Make him young again this is not okay
Hey guys, r any of u from kiwi land, New Zealand?
Kia ora!
What happened to his black stingray?
What's the background music?
1:18 cute bass 😍
what song is playing from the start of the video?
I'd love to get a guy to custom paint a guitar for me like the octopus one and the one with all the icons
Has anyone figured out what songs are in this video yet?
dave ellefson has the reverse p pickup i think...
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE FIRST SONG THAT PLAYS
Is there one for Matt?
the pink one in the thumbnail looks godly
He needs to go back to his stingray, mark stingray era was the best era
YES
Agreed
That Stingray had the best tone; _Dude Ranch_ had an awesome bass sound.
active bass + pick is the brightest bass sound out there
Such a good era ma dude
Mark i lov u
What's the music at the end
I think the pink one was in dammit... or one of the older song videos
I own the blue bass he used in the all the small things music video 😄 i tried contacting Mark about it but no response :(
anyone knows the model of the hot pink one??
Blink 182 ‘the golden years’ :)
0:10 MY NAME'S STEVE HARWELL AND I SING FOR A BAND CALLED SMASH MOUTH
whats the starting song
Muito bom * Mark H.
lol ive run though the desert when it wasn’t there before too
"No ones taken my idea on reversing the pickups" *ibanez heavy breathing*
I wonder if the acid trip was in ridgecrest. Crazy town that is
I wonder why he stopped using Music Man Stingray's
1thess523 musicman has not offered him an endorsement contract. Fender did. That's why. (:
Because Fender pays him a lot of money to play basses with its logo on them 😜
Actually, that's not how an endorsement works.

It's also why a player like Keith Richards doesn't have an endorsement deal with fender, because it would mean he'd have to stop playing his Gibson and Zemaites guitars live.
that pink bass
Anyone Knows The Songs in this Video?
The Pink One Is Too Old ❤i luv it much as You

yeah. it’s what fighting the gravity is written about
what song 2.39?
Beautiful :-)
Sorry to pop your bubble Mark, but Yamaha had the reversed Pickup configuration in the original Broad Bass series in the late 1970's. So it looks like you ran with their idea.
Mark/travis just needs an Alien spacecraft for Tom to travel and he would be with blink again.
Mark uses flatwouds?
