Very good video, my fiance lives in CDO) our land and home are paid for. Our living expenses are very cheap. We have plenty of extra money to enjoy life. When living in the Philippines learn to buy food from ( fish market, buy eggs for chicken farms, ask the locals where to buy anything you need.
Dan - When people say that they โcanโt liveโ on a certain amount (in whatever country), what they mean to say is they cannot live in a manner which they consider to be minimally acceptable. Obviously you CAN โliveโ (have enough to eat and put a roof over you head) in the Philippines on $800 a moth. After all, millions of Filipinos do just that.
In any case, a better question might be; why canโt certain human beings live within their means? After all, it doesnโt matter whether you are an expat in the Philippines or living in your own country, there are simply a lot of people out there who are unwilling to live within their means and to stay within a budget. Here in the States of course people are able to live beyond their means by using credit. They have houses, new cars, and other things that they really cannot afford on their salaries and often donโt really need but they get these things anyway by going into perpetual debt. But when one of these people moves to a country where they canโt get things on credit anymore and where they may have to live on a much lower amount than even the US minimum wage, they simply donโt know what to do. You cannot live beyond your means as an expat in Southeast Asia so you had better either get good at living on a budget or go home
. And since there are no government sponsored safety nets in these countries I would never even consider retiring in Southeast Asia unless I was making at least 30% more than I plan on needing to get by on - either that or a substantial savings account. By the way, when I lived in Phuket for a year I lived on $1300 a month but more than half of that went for rent as I was living in a large ultra-modern house with it own swimming pool. As any financial expert will tell you though you should never spend more than 30% of you income on rent so I was being kind of stupid getting the house I really wanted rather than one I could afford.
Built two houses in the province and my pension is 1350.00 a month Canadian. I am living like a king today.

I eat street food, stay with family, Buy a few beers, barrow a scooter, and spend about 600 a month, Thatโs also having fun, I was so impressed a purchased a condo in Cebu, Iโm now engaged to a Gwapa Women. Who owns a family farm, Iโm teaching them dairy and milk production, Iโm totally in love with the Philippines

Well I live out side of Davao City for $600.00 Per month. Being retired I love it here in the Philippines. I own a Multicab truck and drive it to town about 4 or 5 days a week, it is 12Km to town. I live up on a mountain so AC is not even a thought. My electric and internet is less then $60. per month and the rent is $100. per month. If I wanted to live like a local I could bring that down to $40. per month. I save about $400. per month and have been doing it over 2 years. So when a friend has an emergency I can help them or my self. And yes there always seems to be an emergency going on, See that the average person only makes $10. (500 ph) per day. So you can help someone or sit on your money, my choice is to help.

I live at Eden, @ about 3000' so it is cool at night. We are in the rainy season now, so getting wet is the normal. Up here we have to use rain water for our normal water, there are two ways that happens, 1) you collect the water you use, 2) is the water from the lake through the system of pipes(and that doesn't run all the time)We live in a house we rent from my brother-in-law, and we have been here two years now. They are building a new development and things are getting expensive for land. We are looking for land to buy and build on, or even a ready built house. By the way most houses up here are fenced in. And have had nothing missing from our house in the last two years. I drive a multi cab, so I drive the 14Km to town about 5 days a week. Anymore questions please ask.
Great performance Phil!!! I admire your grit and for certain you are more free living abroad, too. Not everyone can adjust - you have to be adaptable. I am experienced traveling and intend to visit my brother in the Philippines, but enjoy Mexico, too. To a large extent, the little things are important as we get older and living on less is wise - we can benefit others and reach out instead of retreating inside of ourselves like so many seem to do. I sort of like the smaller countries and they do an excellent job on healthcare within reason.

I think that before setting your budget you need to ask yourself 2 questions "where do I want to live" and "how do I want to live". If you want to live in Manila or Cebu, eat out a lot at nice restaurants, use taxis, support a wife and child, hang out in bars, shop in nice supermarkets and buy imported goods etc then sure, you can't make it on $800 a month. If you are happy to live a minimalist life (like most Filipinos do) in the provinces then you can live on $800 a month in the Philippines. The important thing is not to judge someone living a simple life as just "surviving" and not really "living". A simple, basic life is living if that's happiness for you. It is only "surviving" if you want to live it up and cannot.
A lot of retirees can live on less and save money to benefit others in the future. The simple things in life can be the best - better to help others live well, too. It is wonderful to help some other deserving people and let them know they are appreciated, too. The World needs more beautiful people traveling and willing to help uplift others - let's all share goodwill.

Absolutely agree. Some people retire to Miami and some people retire to 2 acres outside of town in Montana. They have widely differing views on what retirement looks like... and significantly different costs

$800 is for expats who are not expecting luxurious life in the Philippines, but more on what is needed in everyday life (given that you don't have medical expenses)
I'm a Filipino, and I only have 90k pesos savings in my account, which I'm using since October 2020, I still have 10k pesos remaining from that savings.
(I don't have a job for now as my company was affected by covid19)
I live my life very simple, and still able to Cook spaghetti. Chicken dishes, pork, vegetables and fruits and do some online shopping.

Itโs called adapting. If it was easy everyone would do it. It can take up to 2 years to get acclimated to your new location and culture. If you can last itโs all downhill after that. Bitching and complaining only makes matters worse. The benefits outweigh the sacrifices. The only failure is not to try. Beware of the dream killers that roam the videos discouraging you from making the leap!

Moto Kenny first of all this isnโt America or their country of origin so youโre not going to change this place to meet your demands. After the initial honeymoon wears off, typically after a few months, boredom will set in unless you establish a routine. In my case I have went back to reading and working out. Iโm practicing the language! Biggest adjustment! When I start to feel down or not having a good day I remind myself why I came here to begin with. Youโre not in Kansas anymore Dorothy!!
Moto Kenny how long have you been here? And what part of the Philippines are you located? Expats are a rare breed. Maybe thatโs why there are so few who have made a successful transition. We are certainly adventurous and we donโt allow a few setbacks to knock us off of our journey. We are intelligent and have saved and planned well. Donโt generalize and label us all as crazy or lunatics or unhappy. A real expat has no regrets about his life abroad.

I live in the Philippines 7 years now. I stay away from anything ex-pat. I shop in the public markets and have adapted to Filipino food and culture. In all of these years, I have not seen a single ex-pat in the public markets. I don't drink or smoke. I have a good social life and have learned to speak Tagalog. I use jeepneys, tricycles or buses for my transport and they are incredibly cheap here. I live on about $300 to $400 a month, which is more than many working people earn that are raising families. When things are tight I can live on $250 a month. $800 a month, I wouldn't know what to do with that much money. ;)

I am a U.S. retiree , a Filipina now living in Pampanga . I own my home but I still couldnโt live on $250 per month. I could live with $500 but still be a very frugal lifestyle.

I love the comparison between "generic Expat" & one who learns local behaviors, foods, etc.. It is 100% true!! I traveled to India twice a year for over 15 years for my business, and eventually found my "Indian Family" so I could stop eating, shopping, & living there like a "tourist" - it changed everything and made me fall in love with India & traveling internationally.
Listen to this person friends. You will have a meaningful life if you take this knowledge overseas anywhere.
Can live on $800 USD in most places in the Philippines. I've been there, my wife is from there. I've studied it for a long time. You don't need a car there, public transportation is good.

If you are in the Philippines and living alone in the province. You can live comfortably with USD 800 or 40,000 pesos. You can even hire a House Helper with that to do cleaning, laundry and cooking.
However, there's no way for you to even survive with USD 800 if you live in the US or other Western Country.

Cebu, Dumaguete, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, Bohol, Palawan, Iloilo, Bacolod, Pangasinan, Rizal are just some of the provinces you can choose from. The good thing is that anywhere you go communication wont be a problem and people are friendly and accustomed to western culture. Mcdonalds, Starbucks, Pizza Hut are a normal sight.
That is not quite true. I live in the U.K. on about ยฃ650. The house is paid for. For me and my son we spend ยฃ240 on groceries, ยฃ102 council tax, ยฃ122 on Gas, Electric and Water, ยฃ54 100Mb internet, ยฃ20 mobile credit, ยฃ13 TV license, ยฃ45 car and house insurance, ยฃ20 petrol, ยฃ40 cinema, pubs, etc.
Healthcare is free, the outdoors is free, most of the history is free.
If it wasnโt that I have itchy feet and love tropical climates (grew up in Costa Rica and Kiribati), life is pretty awesome here.
We budget another ยฃ200 for cheap holidays to Europe and emergencies.
Of course the cost bumps up if you need to pay rent or mortgage. But I worked hard a paid off the house and cleared all debts.
The point is that even northern Europe is not impossible and still have a really good life.

This has been the most informative travel video I have ever watched. I totally desire to immerse myself in the culture and you have given me some great ideas. Also I should mention that I started my language lessons yesterday and hopefully my Tagalog proficiency will be good enough to go anywhere and do anything once I go to the Philippines. I want to also say that even though I just started learning Tagalog it is much easier than tonal languages such as Chinese. When I lived in Taipei, Taiwan I went to a language school for two years and still had difficulty with the tones.

$800-1K range is comfortable living in the Philippines. Current exchange rate at 50PhP to $1 which equates to 40kPhp-50kPhp. For perspective the daily wage in Philippines is between 300PhP-550PhP per DAY. A lawyer earns between 27k PhP - 100kPhP per month. Most new expats make the mistake of living like they're on vacation when they decide to live full-time overseas. Also, living in metro areas are expensive. If you are comfortable living in the outskirts and forgo certain necessities, you can live quite well with less than $1k/month

Was cycling through Ha Tien Vietnam into Cambodia in 2011 and was chatting to a local granddad who learnt English in the Vietnam war. At the time he said an Australian was living a good life there with a local woman near his own age for $400 USD a month. He rented a place, payed for everything, drunk truckloads of beer, she did all the house chores etc. That $400 then is equivalent to $460 now. There are lots of places around the world where you can live on little money, just seek-out, explore, get ones mind in the right place and adapt to the environment.

Excellent content! Dan I truly believe you are โawakeningโ the dormant nomad in many of us! Iโve always known vagabond to be a somewhat derogatory term. I donโt really see you two as vagabonds but more as adventurists. This type of comparison you are doing in this video for me has great value. I have never seen or heard quite a comparison like this. For me as I suspect for many thereโs a happy medium. Like yourself I tend to be more interested in the local culture but once in a blue moon I might stop by an ex pat bar just to touch base and feel the pulse of the ex-pat community. I encourage you if possible to even do some one on one interviews with the two main types you discussed in this video.

Less! We have a nicely finished, brand new, large studio apartment near downtown Dumaguete. Running AC an average of 12 hours per day. Rent is 7k pesos, utilities (including good internet) adds just under 3k, giving an average monthly housing cost of 10k php, approx $200.00US.
Some people might balk at a studio apartment, but we find it wonderful. We take turns cooking most meals at home, shop first at the local markets and spend most of our time on day trips, of which southern Negros is blessed. The payments on the new scooter are only 3k per month, fuel doubles that as we are out exploring every day that we can (not much now!) Meals out are typically lunches on exploring trips and are ALWAYS local restaurants, try everything, you'll find many new dishes you'll come to love.
My lady watches our budget carefully, and is quick to point out when I am feeling foolish. But we live a good life, enjoy our days thoroughly and on the most expensive months we average 30k php , approx $600US.
Can't wait for the world to calm down again and continue our wandering days!

It's all about choices. I can live off $1300 a month in the states. Some month I go on a shopping spree and spend 3 or 4 thousand dollars.

You can live with $800 a month in the province, but it depends on your lifestyle. But for $1800, definitely. But if you'll be staying in Manila, $800 is just enough for daily expenses and rent and utilities.

Handling the statisical abnormality! I have travaฤบed alot and going local is the way to go. Also there is always pleasant surprises when you go local. I remember hitting the company canteen in Jamaica and the curried fish meals were delicious and really cheap. Funny how those memories stick in the mind.

We live on about $1000/month comfortably in Talisay City, Cebu. We own our modest house. We live a simple but happy life- internet/Netflicks. We get pizza or Jollibee or similar at least twice a week. We donโt go out drinking. So nothing crazy. We have or buy whatever we need.
But thatโs why I came here and married my Filipina wife- happiness, peacefulness and low stress. I rarely ever see an expat or foreign tourist. Maybe 1 or 2 a month at SM Seaside Mall.

I like the way you broke that down. Home price, expats price, and local price. It was obvious That the person spending $1800 a month was trying to recreate his life in the Philippines that he had elsewhere, And he didn't even realize his own mistake. I hate when people make assumptions, Just because they can't do something, someone else can't. I think the word is called, discipline.

With my financial freedom, I can live in the US for about $1,000 a month easily. No matter how much we make, we'll never have enough. If we could travel, eat, and sleep like locals, we could even stretch the dollars much further. Work hard early, save smarter, and party the hardest. Also, when you travel, you'll never be alone. Life is too short to last long. Be safe & happy travels!

If you wanna live anywhere thereโs 3 rules. 1. Observe the locals and do as they do. 2. Stay away from big cities as itโs always more expensive everywhere unless your a multi millionaire then go for it. And 3. Remember no place is perfect there is always stress donโt feel entitled to anything. You mess with the bull you get the horns, donโt expect to maintain your life after all your moving away from your old life for a reason accept the changes and adapt ๐๐๐

I was a kid serving aboard the USS Knox FF-1052 and visited Dumaguete in 1979. It was beautiful. We were the first ship to visit since WWII and were there to do a flag-raising at the top of Cam Lookout. I would love to go back.

My expenses before building our house were $420 a month that includes everything. If you can't live on $800 a month there is something wrong unless you live in the cites or where there are a lot of expats.

My input on the topic... if someone from the US makes only 1,800$ he shouldn't be used to an extravagant life style so why is he expecting to live like a king? True happiness isnt found in living a life you dreamed of, rather try to love what matters... the people and the culture of the Philippines.
My rent for a 2 bedroom apartment was 100$, however I offset that low cost by enjoying my aircon! I lived in Laguna and managed to easily live on 1,000$.
Tip: live away from expat locations and enjoy the true Philippines.

I first visited the Philippines in 2012 and have lived here off and on since then. When I first came to the Philippines my budget was just under 850usd per month.
Currently I have a 2 bedroom apartment in a secure compound cost 100usd per month. Utilities average 125usd per month. I ride a bicycle locally or a tricycle in bad weather. Groceries and maintenance medicine cost 250 per month. I use bulk data on my phone rather than internet. Hope this can show others that it is possible to live in the Philippines cheaply.

I enjoy cooking at home. I don't think I would be as happy as a vegetarian in the Philippines unless I was living in a town that had good vegetarian restaurants like in Baguio or Makati in the Philippines.

From what I have experienced by living in the Philippines your pretty much spot on correct. I live in a smaller town and do just fine on a little over 1k...But that also includes owning a car and having a live in girlfriend.

First of all, I love the PI and have been visiting annually for over 20 years. As for living costs, it all about your personal comfort level. If you're okay living w/o aircon, shopping in local markets or sari sari stores, and eating/drinking locally, then you can live very cheaply. Nothing wrong with that.

For every expat that quits and runs there are 5 who stay and flourish! A real expat doesnโt regret his decision to relocate he makes the best of his/her situation. True buy a bike or motorbike for transportation, plant some vegetables in your backyard specially Malunggay and banana, papaya which do not need maintenance. They have a market day, go buy your foods because they are cheaper. Surely you will be able to live less than a 1000 dollars. Maybe once a week going out is good enough too.

I couldn't agree more. I'm retired and live in So. Cal. in an expensive and beautiful area. I have a quality lifestyle. It's all about savings, spending choices and resource management. My social security is less than $1,100 a month and I typically put aside at least half of that towards becoming a vagabond. Examples: savings first, bill pay then recreation last;.no car walk, bicycle or public transport; only buy quality clothing/shoes at discount. Live in gratitude, take good care of my health and stay active

most people think they can move to fills and live better than they do back home...and you can ,but it wont be $800 bucks..also most 1st world people are very spoiled and would not last in phils..no matter how much cash they have..1 tip i use is when im in Canada i pack balik bayan boxes full of all the heavy stuff that is unavailable/expensive in the Philippines (the light food stuffs i take with me on flight)..

Hi Dan. I love your videos. I am still in the US because of the COVID 19 but at some point it will open up again. At that time I will move to the Dasmarinas area, Cavite< to live. I have made 2 trips there last year and should of been there now if not for the covid. BUt my budget will be closer to $2000.00 each month. I love playing golf and as you know it is not a cheap sport to play. So that will account for 5-66 each month. The remainder will be basic living expenses. My girlfriend there has 3 kids so I will need a 3 bedroom home. That will be around 3-400 each month. So I admire someone that can live and enjoy him-herself on $800 a month.
