On the Afterneath, the "drag" control works a bit like a time control on most delay pedals, in that it will change the pitch of the reverb signal as you turn it. The different modes allow you to quantize the pitches that the drag control will take the signal through. You can clearly hear the pitch going through semitones when Mick has it in chromatic mode. The other modes give different pitches. Volt per octave is a standard used for controlling synthesizers. Basically the volt per octave mode allows you to send a signal out of a synth or a sequencing device to control your pedal. You can also use an expression pedal to shift through the pitches while you play.

    • @chrissherman01
      @chrissherman01 4 роки тому +5

To summarize, the modes control the way that the drag control works, whether you change the drag by turning the knob or with an expression pedal.

And in fact Earthquaker developed the Eurorack version of this the same time they were working on the V3 pedal.

Guys, thank you so much for the video. I'm happy to hear that you like the Firesound V3 overdrive
    Best Regards,
Note Firesound v3 uses mosfet differential input opamp which gives smooth sound and even driven by a high level effect before the Firesound, the tone is still transparent!

@@ThatPedalShow Hanging in there - you as well.. No worries - the exp pedal thing is cool but you could actually hear the difference and potential as you turned the knob. If you want to hear the Afterneath at its best, I recommend the latest Messthetics record. Anthony Pirog is a reverb master (and a guitar genius in general). Missed you guys at NAMM , but all you missed was additional hearing loss ;-)

Agreed. I have an earlier Afterneath. I love the pedal, but wish it had an expression pedal input to control the drag. Adding multiple modes for drag makes the v3 even cooler than that! I may eventually have to upgrade.

That APE would be perfect for my Rubbernecker analog delay. Solves some buffer problems with the Rbernecker as well. And the Rbernecker has an effects loop of it's own. Blows my mind how much better it makes that digi delay.. wow.

Modulating reverb pedals are some of the most creatively inspiring tools you can have for practicing. I grabbed an Afterneath last year and quickly found that it can force you to be more articulate in your picking dynamics. It's really fun to get lost in that particular rabbit hole, especially with a little tremolo and overdrive.

APE is cool! For awhile I’ve approximated a “budget APE” by putting a Boss DS-1 after the wet-only output of a Behringer VD400 (Boss DM-3 clone). Recently trying a Boss VB-2 clone after the DS-1, using vibrato for maybe even more tape-ish (wow & flutter) style. Takes some tweaking, but I find more than one sound that I enjoy. Pedal Crush book has me wanting to similarly experiment almost too much! 🙂

Cheers chaps, interesting and distinctive set of pedals there. The possibilities you get to build your own 'character' delays using the APE with a simple DDL are pretty awesome. Harmonic trem and a smidge of mid boost OD in the loop with the delay perhaps? Be nice if your effects switching device of choice could put effects either in the main signal path or the APE loop. Not sure if this is possible, also it's making my brain hurt thinking about it which suggests it's non trivial. Probably just pie in the sky .... mmm .... pie .....apple pie .... with ice cream ..... yum. :)

Bingo! They launched a 500 series version of the Afterneath recently too, which ties in the addtions of CV and the oscillator mode. Tuning those delay lines allows for some crazy harmonised options - being able to jump from the root to a 5th to an octave for example, but only in the reverb trails.

..checks video length... 44 minutes, awesome, None of this 30 minutes nonsense. :) Also I like the sneaky Captains Riff from Dan at the 9 minute mark. Danish Pete will be happy.

What would happen if one would put a vibrato in the loop of the APE? Driven chorus? What happens if my delay feedback is higher than one repeat? What if put reverse delay? What if I don’t kill dry?

Let’s be absolutely clear here folks, even with an ACTUAL APE in this episode there was waaaaayyyyyyy more monkeying around in last nights VCQs. 😉

I wish the ape had stereo i/o. Something about a analog preamp soothes the soul.

That was odd. I could hear the Afterneath subtleties (like Fraser) all the way through the Internet and into my Sennheiser's............ I do hope that Earthquaker send to you guys the "Plumes" pedal - I'm quite enamoured of it. Best, Pete. (loved the APE btw). Best, Pete.

Mick and Dan - Could you guys please do an Octavia shootout? Would love to see the Red Beard Honey Badger, Kingtone Octaland, etc. I’m finding a surprisingly short list of good content around this particular effect featuring high quality audio, good planning and boutique pedals.

Great episode. Been jonesing for an Afterneath ever since I heard V.1. But the APE really caught my attention.
You mentioned delay with no analog dry-through set 100% wet with the APE - would the APE be of any help in a wet/dry situation, where analog-dry through is an issue? (as in your recent episode on W/D and the problems associated with pedals that don't have analog dry-through). It may be an impossible task, but I'm trying to think of a way to use my Source Audio Delay (and, hopefully, Tremolo) in a Wet/Dry rig. If not, I think I'll have to set up a board just for W/D with delays, etc that do have analog dry-through
...which would be a good excuse to use as many pedals as possible on 3 separate boards...hmm.

Yeah, absolutely. Think it would be killer in that environments..... as long as you don’t mind what the preamp is doing to the tone. Otherwise, Wetter Box by TheGigRig.....

Mick we know you have a big black clock. Really we do. Why do you have to keep whipping it out to flaunt it. It makes my little white clock jealous. My little white clock will never be as big and glorious as your big black clock. Love you guys. Keep your heads up. Cheers!

If you go find the rig rundown with Eric Johnson he shows how he had his original EP3 modded to work exactly like the APE! Delay pedal in a loop inside it. Pretty neat.

You are correct, I had a long chat with Eric about how Bill Fulton modded his tape delay for that purpose. He uses a Deluxe Memory Man looped into his Echoplex. No more tape hassles

A bit of insight on the Afterneath v3: EQD Released a version of the Afterneath as a Modular Synthesizer, and every parameter was able to be controlled through other LFO modules. The 1V Octave thing is referring to that, which would probably be heard more clearly while using an expression pedal because it would simulate the Control Voltage on a synth.
I have had the Afterneath V2 for a few years and it is never left my board.

Does your Afterneath V2 make a volume drop aswell? i've had it on the board for a few months but swapped it for a Nux Tape Core now^^

@@zwidawurzn9423 yeah it does drop a bit, but I always have it on so it's not really a problem for me

If you jumped the loop out in the ape i wonder if you could get more overdrive with the saturation

Hope everyone here is well! What odd times we live in. As long as we all still have our health, our loved ones, human decency, food/water and a guitar to play we'll get through this. Listen to your local government and stay safe people! Remember, if you stay home you have an excuse to play the guitar all the time.

I would like to hear the APE compared to the Dunlop Echoplex Pre pedal - which I'd always thought was a minimal change at the cost of another pedal in the chain. Of course, a switcher limits that negative effect.

I would be interested in your view on the J Rockett when compared with the Strymon DECO. Not a lot to be found on the DECO (you guys reviewed it going back four years), but it seems with all the discussion now on tape effects you might revisit it. Am I getting ahead of myself?

Pedals get their personalities by the range of possibilities they offer. Some aim to do just one thing very well, others leave more choices with the user. EQD tends toward the latter. I think tc electronic gets it right with useful variety on the pedal but much more scope via the app.
