Hi, I’m new at this but saw your video and decided to try. I started making this bracelet and it started going into a spiral. I liked it anyway! But, after an inch it seemed to not want to spiral but look messy. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!!

First make sure that you have the starting end secured, so it can't twist/flip over as easy. This video was highlighting the button clasp finishing, so it didn't take as much time to look at the knotting. You can use any kind of design you want, but if you are wanting to use the exact square knots like in the video you will need to alternate each knot. First knot: left strand goes "over" the two middle strands, right strand goes "under" the two middle strands and "up" through the loop.
Second knot: left strand goes "under" the two middle strands, right strand goes "over" the two middle strands and "down" through the loop.
Then alternate between the two. I hope that helps!

How can a piece be finished if all four cords do NOT fit through the button shank? Is there an elegant (that is, non clunky) way to get rid of the excess cords, prior to tying off the one or ones that do? Thanks in advance for your reply!

Hi Patricia. There are a few different Macrame Finishing Techniques if the number of cords you're using in your project won't fit through the shank of a button. Here's a few links to those videos on our UA-cam channel: the slide knot: fmg.co/UzFxlN , the overhand knot: fmg.co/S9Yun8 and using cord ends: fmg.co/MxkVyh .

@@FireMountainGems Thank you for those! I still wonder, though, whether there is a way to remove the excess cords elegantly when you HAVE to use the button? I have an orphan project sitting for four years (a leather kumihimo braid, actually) and the button is essentially the focal piece. (I probably should have put the button on first before making the braid, but I was new to kumihimo at the time. At this point, the braid cannot be undone to start over, as the material will be kinky from being tightly braided for so long.) I hoped I might be able to borrow a macrame finishing technique, or somehow hide the terminated excess ends inside some kind of knot (overhand or otherwise), to finally finish this piece. Grateful for any suggestions anyone can offer!

You could try snipping the ends of each cord at an angle. That would decrease the diameter of the cord for that last 1/2 to 1 inch of the cord and might help in getting all four cords through the shank!
