@@--cobb--1674 The heaviness of the lightsabers is due to its strong gyroscopic effect. This creates sort of strong resistance to external force applied to change its orientation. It's similar to how G force needs to be counteracted with lifting force.
Just by 2 sabers and give one to a friend and just fight and with bladebuilders you can make a double sided lightsaber for double the fun Why does this comment seem like an ad
I have never seen this many people argue about fencing in the comments before. It's just fencing with lightsabers, calm down, it's just people having fun.
The problem with this is that it does not deincentivize leaving oneself open while attacking enough because once the first hit occurs the point is over. This doesn't simulate that in a lightsaber fight the opponent would likely still hurt you if you only hit them a split second before they hit you. Thus, no point should be awarded if the opponent gets a hit within a second or so of the initial hit. This will make for significantly more interesting fights where contestants actually make blade contact instead of just both lunging at each other trying to beat the other by a millisecond
It's just kendo, it follows japanese armoured sword fighting - no shield means you're very likely going to die, the objective is to make sure you kill your opponent before that happens. Head strikes and lung / heart stabs are favoured because limbs (and thus swing power / follow through) stop real quick once the lights go out, increasing the odds that the injury you receive won't be as bad / your armour can do its job.
"deincentivize", what does that mean? I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I think this format makes it really boring to watch. too. (looks boring for the competitors as well)
Same rules with fencing. As someone who appreciates fencing I can assure you this is basically what fencers do, the most important thing is being the first one to make contact. Although it doesn't look as flashy as the fights from the movies, this is almost certainly what lightsaber combat would be, as a death stick needs to be respected regardless of where or how it hits you, leading to safe combat and getting the first hit
Canonically the only reason lightsaber fights are so flashy is because they take place between opponents that can see the future possibilities before they happen. Think a grandmaster in chess, seeing several moves ahead, leading to calculated risk, as opposed to a beginner that can at best see a couple moves in advance, throwing their pieces at any idea just to try to break their opponent before they are broken themself
I mean this with zero malice towards the people in the video, especially the red combatant, that it feels to me like the beginner chess analogy. I don't know their exact rules for what counts as contact, but I would guess a poke/thrust is considered such (death stick). A thrust is the most effective use of distance (and swordfighting is the art of managing distance), yet both fighters in the video seem to be favoring swings. A swing is very projected, gives the opponent an open door before the swing and after follow through, and provides no real strategic advantage outside of looking flashy. Swings can also be parried very easily, leading to openings for a thrust. Any intermediate-advanced fencer would tear the competitive scene on display here into shreds, but for what they have it's still very entertaining to watch. Traditional fencing would be so much cooler with glowing death sticks
Showed this to my kid and pointed out that the intro in this competition is actually the one that actually very important. That is the real Sportsmanship.
The idea is that Jedi and Sith use the force to sense incoming attacks, that's why their fights last so long. But yes, with normal people, lightsaber fights would end very quickly.
These people also aren't force sensitive so it would still go differently if it were truly authentic. Don't forget that simple fact with your half cocked assessment.
Also lightsabers have no weight to them, so wielding one is incredibly disadvantageous against staff sabers or the classic 1 short and 1 long dual weild. One sword only works with heavy double handed blades, because M×A=F, so there's a lot of force behind it, but lightsabers don't have mass and don't really need force to cut through things, so that tactic is out of the window, leaving you much more vulnerable holding just one. Youd just rely on speed to attack and strength when blocking, a staff can attack immediately after blocking or attacking as there's almost no recovery needed with the strikes, and a dual weilder could just stab or slice with their off hand whilst distracting you with their main hand or deflecting your attack and stabbing you with the other whilst you're in swing recovery
Force sensitive lightsaber duelists don't strike to kill, they always swing there lightsaber in a way to disorient their opponent. That's why you see duels in the prequels looking like "dances". They aren't trying to hit their opponent, because they can easily counter and get killed in an instant.
I remember there use to be this fencing club when I was younger, and they started to make these types of light sabers back in like 05-6. I use to go and once some i guess high school boys brought these and it was so fucking cool. I would love to do this so much.
I've never really been able to get into these, but this one? Very good! Awesome displays of sportsmanship, and respect for one another. Are we talking fencing with a rapier for college and olympic sports or HEMA fencing? Personally love the clang of Polish sabers parrying each other back and forth.
I do kendo as my martial art, and personally kendo is far more entertaining and fair. It also has a stronger point system. There was so many times when both opponents clashed or hit each other in the same beat, but one was awarded a point. In kendo neither would have been awarded the point. It's not just about hitting the person first, it's about hitting the opponent and not getting hit back. If both players hit each other in the same beat, and the refs, who obviously aren't seeing which one actually scored first in a lot of these points, award one of the players a point when they both realistically would both be dead. This is why kendo has a stronger point system, because if you hit, that attack would have actually killed someone in real life, if it was a actually sword, as well as you moving as to not die yourself. Judges have to be trained for years to make accurate scoring decisions. In this, it's not the same, Plus one-handed rapier styles or going to be at far and away more advantageous than a two-handed sword or katana style. The win condition for each weapon is completely different. A rapier needs to simply stab or touch an opponent, a long sword or katana needs to cut the opponent. This means a light touch without a lot of force can win you the point with a rapier versus a katana or longsword which needs to have a strong cut. This means the long sword user has to come in slightly closer and make his attacks more committed, versus the rapier user that can play a protracted game of pool and barely tap the opponent at a distance. With a lightsaber it's a mixture of the two weapons. while a lightsaber can incinerate your flesh by mere touch, it won't fully burn you if it is a light touch, which is why in all the Star wars movies they act as if they are cutting them like a katanas or long swords, rather than using them like rapiers. I think this rule set should make the two styles very distinct, and have their own systems for points. Two handed, or longsword type styles should work on kendo rules. While one handed, or rapier styles should work on fencing rules.

For all the normies, weebs and general public untrained in combat sports: they are using real fencing techniques for the most part. Purple saber guy has a pretty good longsword form.
Obviously the 7 forms of lightsaber combat exist, and the fights needed to be long to make them interesting, but it makes you wonder why most (if not all) lightsaber battles didn't use fencing techniques. I feel as if it would make the force user much more difficult to defend against.
That's a helluva way to start out any competition. I think that first 45 seconds is exactly the kind of thing that we should be indoctrinating into our children when it comes to sports. I love it.
What? A kendoka would get DESTROYED. Kendokas have a less than basic footwork, fight with a straight torso, use very few guards, have very few and restricted parries, very weird bind rules... Kendo is not a combat oriented martial art, mate.
What this made me realize is that in order to fight as agressively as jedi in a movie an not open your guard up immediatly you would actually need to have jedi powers. Fencing is the best humans can do.
When a challenger gets you into a corner, you’re basically done for. Because unless you can think of something fast, there is no hope, because being a challenger and cornering your opponent is like having the high ground
Are there weight or height or reach categories? It seems like this heavily favors those with long reach and legs (can cover more ground in a single step).
www.SaberLegion.org is our website and we exist primarily on Facebook, and we use our own ruleset that's a blend of several fencing types, from Traditional to HEMA to Kendo
@@alek2969 nah this looks more similar to HEMA, which focuses on longswords and stuff like that, the different fencing types are actually different blades.
I feel like the judges were biased. I found many of these split rulings to favor the blue duelist so I played back multiple double hits etc. and the red duelist was clearly landing his hits first in multiple exchanges. Seems unfair to me. They should go back in the camera footage to confirm.
You'd be correct _if this was modern regulation fencing._ However, under rulesets for _any other swordfighting competitions_ touches must be significant. A slight graze does not award a point.
It’s more the. Likely we will switch to energy weapons around 2500-2700 plus there are very very VERY primitive models of “lightsabers” known in legends as protosabers. These “Protosabers” yes ofc use a premise blade lights etc but uses an outside energy pack to heat it up. Granite obsolete now it may be cutting edge weaponry and actually quite common within 700-1000 years from now. But that’s almost a Millenia away and if we don’t destroy ourselves
@@jthejedigaming8303 No one gonna create lightsaber for military/war purpose. Blaster? Maybe yes. It's not just your average mind. Much to considerate. And the fact that you could shot someone from far away is way more practical instead of this. And again, the durability, weather effect, resistance, the price to be mass produced, the consistency, practicality, usage, and many more comes into thought. So it's not possible.
This looks like kendo match only with lightsabers instead of shinai xD... I do like it xD my question is: What lenght of blade is used in duels? Those I see used doesn't look like 92cm but a bit shorter....
If you're wondering why this doesn't resemble the movies, it's because light doesn't deflect light. It never did. Also, the reality of medieval combat was mostly like this, with people most inclined to avoid being lacerated with bouts of intermediate hacking. It wasn't a dance-off.
I understand that in reality this is actually typical swordfighting , even though my 10 year old mind is still thinking that this is going to be as epic as episode 3 revenge of the sith. I know that there are also rehearsed acting plays too that make for full intertanment but I gotta say I'd rather play for sport without mask and such.
4:05 well the left guy is holding it at the edge of the sword... so thats an advantage... he is doing all the way the same thing round and around... thats boring
Yeah but it's cool cause lights. Also, and I'm not so sure because I don't watch too much fencing, but I'd figure it's based mostly on swift stabs and staying out of poking range. These guys are more focused on articulate swings and blocks as the swords are a lot more stiff and not as flexible as fencing swords. Again, not certain as I don't watch too much fencing but that's just my first impressions.
I wish them to use the 7 lightsaber forms in the championships although people say it is not possible in irl a person is able to learn the 7 styles. Makashi: one handed made for duelling Soresu:defensive style that waits for an enemy’s fail Makashi: An agile style where the user attacks with quick and agresive attacks from different angles Djem so: the user use agresive and powerful attacks. Based on countering the enemy’s attack This incorporation on lightsaber fencing would be great
The oriblem is every one of those you just listed are all just part of regular sword fighting. Lets say for instance you decide you want to learn Makashi. Its based on rapier fencing. And in rapier fencing, you use deflectional parries (Djem So), you bait the opponent into opening up their guard and then strike (Soresu) and you attack from different angles (Makashi).
As a fan of historical fencing, I find it weird that they don’t call doubles, they just award the point to whoever makes the first contact. It kind of looks silly when you see a hit to the leg a mere moment before the other fighter lands a stab to the chest and it gets tallied as a point for the first contact. I don’t suppose he’d be celebrating his victory very long were that to happen in an actual fight.
I would love more than anything to be able to compete in this sport. You should also have Lightsaber kata competition. Score it just like they do at a karate tournament.

These two guys could beat literally every Jedi and sith we have ever seen
For all the normies, weebs and general public untrained in combat sports: they are using real fencing techniques for the most part. Purple saber guy has a pretty good longsword form.
Obviously the 7 forms of lightsaber combat exist, and the fights needed to be long to make them interesting, but it makes you wonder why most (if not all) lightsaber battles didn't use fencing techniques.
I feel as if it would make the force user much more difficult to defend against.
Just to clarify for those who might try to compare it to epee and foil, this is more of a HEMA style of fencing.
I want the UA-camr shadiversity to review this fight. I feel like it would be interesting.
You know what, so do I
Yeah
He doesn't know what hes talking about when it comes to lightsaber
Russian Patrick True, but this is closer to real swordplay than actual lightsaber combat.
@@Kag_Yag he absolutely does and demonstrates as much through his star wars series.
That's a helluva way to start out any competition. I think that first 45 seconds is exactly the kind of thing that we should be indoctrinating into our children when it comes to sports. I love it.
Now, imagine a Kendo player in that. It works be insane, and these guys would get stomped.
Imagine an Olympic fencer.
What? A kendoka would get DESTROYED. Kendokas have a less than basic footwork, fight with a straight torso, use very few guards, have very few and restricted parries, very weird bind rules... Kendo is not a combat oriented martial art, mate.
@@jarlbregadan914 trust me. They would dominate. Just look at high level practitioners.
They'd better adjusting to weight as well
Or imagine a good HEMA practitioner, or honestly anybody with actual training
This is how logical lightsaber battles are speed and distance you don’t just swing the saber around you aim for the body.
Dooku screaming somewhere in his grave
"You have no technique...sloppy"
Anakin: spinning is a good trick
Sheev: say no more
When Olympic fencing is too uncivilized...
Good one
I got that reference
There should be so many more people watching this
What this made me realize is that in order to fight as agressively as jedi in a movie an not open your guard up immediatly you would actually need to have jedi powers. Fencing is the best humans can do.
I find this way more interesting than football lmao... we need this as a sport in tv i stg
I didn't know this is just that this would be so much fun to watch
I love how slowly but surely we’re getting real life Jedi. Honestly I want to learn how to fight with a lightsaber I think it’d be cool
www.SaberLegion.org is your best bet I think lol
@Jaqen H'ghar people nowadays 🤣🤣 no offense
@Jaqen H'ghar i know right ah man that's so funny lol'ing out loud right now 🤣
That’s a real haha funny moment
I love how happy everyone looks
the 6 yr old girl in pink on the front row stole the show
Who's here 2020
Live Happy no, I’m 1995
No, im here in 195 BC, but nice try
THIS IS SO COOL!! Can't believe I am JUST finding this
cant wait for lightsabers to be real and see how many of these guys are still interested
When a challenger gets you into a corner, you’re basically done for. Because unless you can think of something fast, there is no hope, because being a challenger and cornering your opponent is like having the high ground
You can roll just like in the Dark Souls games 👍
Are there weight or height or reach categories? It seems like this heavily favors those with long reach and legs (can cover more ground in a single step).
Now we know why Vader won so much
This is actually a thing?! This is cool af!
It is! www.SaberLegion.org is where you can start
So boring lol
It’s quite hilarious seeing how fast a real lightsaber duel would be over.
I’m speechless. Didn’t know it was a thing.
Is there a website with an explanation of the rules for this?
cramnh0j unsure, searching The Saber Legion is your best bet
literally look up the different rules of fencing, there’s three types.
i dont know the names but this looks like the faster, type of fencing
www.SaberLegion.org is our website and we exist primarily on Facebook, and we use our own ruleset that's a blend of several fencing types, from Traditional to HEMA to Kendo
They should go back in the camera footage to confirm.
the severity of the blow also matters, a hit on the foot, hand, or leg wouldn't be nearly as effective as a hit on the head
You'd be correct _if this was modern regulation fencing._
However, under rulesets for _any other swordfighting competitions_ touches must be significant. A slight graze does not award a point.
Yeah I now see that fighting with actual lightsabers in real life fight - if it were ever possible - would be completely impractical.
and boring
It’s more the. Likely we will switch to energy weapons around 2500-2700 plus there are very very VERY primitive models of “lightsabers” known in legends as protosabers. These “Protosabers” yes ofc use a premise blade lights etc but uses an outside energy pack to heat it up. Granite obsolete now it may be cutting edge weaponry and actually quite common within 700-1000 years from now.
But that’s almost a Millenia away and if we don’t destroy ourselves
@@jthejedigaming8303 Still would be impractical as we don't have the Force in real life to defend against quick-moving projectiles
@@mr.snitters5281 special deflective bodyarmor? artificial energy force fields? I dunno
Would you think about adding the lightsaber sound effects so we get maximum immersion?
Red was robbed in round one.
Their techniques are quite interesting. They unite fencing, kendo, hema and the tricks and styles from the movies
No fencing here. Hema yes
If you're wondering why this doesn't resemble the movies, it's because light doesn't deflect light. It never did.
Also, the reality of medieval combat was mostly like this, with people most inclined to avoid being lacerated with bouts of intermediate hacking. It wasn't a dance-off.
They aren't made of light though
Lightsabers aren't made of Light....... they're actually more like Plasma Swords.
I would love to get in on this but I don't know where to go lol. I don't think there are lightsaber matches where I live.
The force is strong within these two.❤🎉
The Referee's shoto reminds me of the lightsaber cheese knife in family Guy.
This isn't lightsaber dueling this is fencing with glow sticks
Still cool
@@lojika1majik seems kinda boring to me
Eh
@@Lord_Buckles then watch the ufc
Me:uses form
Person I’m fighting:da fauq
Love this! Atta KID! MN in the house!
This is going to be an Olympic sport one day, Just wait and see.
This is just fencing with glow sticks
I've seen more movement in my legs and I'm paralyzed
I understand that in reality this is actually typical swordfighting , even though my 10 year old mind is still thinking that this is going to be as epic as episode 3 revenge of the sith.
I know that there are also rehearsed acting plays too that make for full intertanment but I gotta say I'd rather play for sport without mask and such.
...this seemed like it was gonna be so much cooler in my head..
Fencing with lightsabers, never seen this before, definitely catches the eye
Bro is this a real sport?
Yes, It is. A friend of mine plays It.
This was more lame than I expected
For real i never fenced a day in my life and both these guys could get bodied rn
King Kong youre right you know nothing about fencing lol
my iq is 2 💀
Ikr, lame and gay
Yeah because it's missing the sound effects from the sabers and no epic star wars music
Me and my friends do this outside
Do it with us too then! www.SaberLegion.org
This is better than "The Acolyte"
Cmon man this is just fencing but....brighter
4:05 well the left guy is holding it at the edge of the sword... so thats an advantage... he is doing all the way the same thing round and around... thats boring
It looks like two seven year olds trying to do a light saber duel
I’m shocked they don’t block at all they just try to dodge when they can
ikr
I just finished editing a video of a really epic lightsaber battle in downtown Phoenix
this needs to be in Olympics...I wouldn't miss it
I’m a nerd you are a nerd we all are nerds
So.... fencing
With lights
Yeah but it's cool cause lights. Also, and I'm not so sure because I don't watch too much fencing, but I'd figure it's based mostly on swift stabs and staying out of poking range. These guys are more focused on articulate swings and blocks as the swords are a lot more stiff and not as flexible as fencing swords. Again, not certain as I don't watch too much fencing but that's just my first impressions.
I’m sorry but this is the most boring thing there barely even duelling
Their* you illiterate idiot
@@catfaceman1669 grammer nazi
@@catfaceman1669 Bro, it's they're* lol if you're gonna be that person at least correct properly
Cat Face Man They’re* you illiterate idiot
@@catfaceman1669 dumb fuck
I wish them to use the 7 lightsaber forms in the championships
although people say it is not possible in irl a person is able to learn the 7 styles.
Makashi: one handed made for duelling
Soresu:defensive style that waits for an enemy’s fail
Makashi: An agile style where the user attacks with quick and agresive attacks from different angles
Djem so: the user use agresive and powerful attacks. Based on countering the enemy’s attack
This incorporation on lightsaber fencing would be great
The oriblem is every one of those you just listed are all just part of regular sword fighting. Lets say for instance you decide you want to learn Makashi. Its based on rapier fencing. And in rapier fencing, you use deflectional parries (Djem So), you bait the opponent into opening up their guard and then strike (Soresu) and you attack from different angles (Makashi).
This is my favorite thing to ever happen
this is a discgrace towards real lightsaber dueling
its literally like 2yr olds hiting each others heads
there is no style and no technique
How Jedi and sith would battle without the force
Wow how cool glad I've found it
That purple blade looks amazing!
just when I've thought I've seen it all
I am flabbergasted
Love the fact that even the referee has a saber
I love how the sabres just come from a movie and they made it into a art
Thank you, UA-cam recommendations
Fighting with light sabers and Jedi training could become a new form of martial art and fighting style based on a science fiction movie.
What you see: Fencing
What I see: Star Wars the Old Republic
Goes to show how important choreography is to making saber dueling look cool.
I was actually expecting to see like Ray Park style battles going on. Didn’t realize it was just fencing
Have you ever thought of turning it off and on. It really frees things up. Give it a go.
The ref personally convinced the commissioner that he needed a saber to officiate.
I would like to know what kind of sabers are used here. I plan a Revan Cosplay but with combat ready lightsabers
I would love more than anything to be able to compete in this sport. You should also have Lightsaber kata competition. Score it just like they do at a karate tournament.
This is the greatest thing iv seen in a hot minute.
This is a dream come true for me.
Hi, fellow saber friends. I am picking The Saber Legion this week to feature on Kyber Kave Productions - on a weekly upload called BEAT DOWN. It is where people beat each other up with lightsabers. And it is to promote and educate people about the schools, the sport, and martial art this represents. To make it different I will lay down some music tracks to go with the video. This is a fantastic video here.
