In this video I’m showing my iPad Mini desktop setup. For some people and their use, this could mean that you could replace your PC with an iPad Mini 6. Basically, this type of setup turns an iPad Mini 6 into a desktop computer. To do this I’m also using the best USB-C hub for the iPad Mini 6 that I’ve found so far, by Dockteck and connecting the iPad mini 6 to a HDMI computer monitor, although this would be the same for a TV. This setup is also good for turning your iPad Mini 6 into a gaming console. With the addition of the PS4 game controller and the Behringer USB sound card and being able to connect the iPad Mini 6 to a TV or computer monitor. This means you can game on the iPad Mini 6 in the same way you would on a gaming console such as an Xbox Series X or Sony PS5. This iPad mini 6 setup is able to connect to the internet using a cable to a router or modem. It’s also able to access data on external storage, such as SSDs, SD cards and USB thumb drives. It has a keyboard and mouse attached via Bluetooth. Is connected to continuous power via its USB C power supply, so stays fully powered and charged. Takes full advantage of being connected via HDMI to a TV or computer monitor or any compatible display. And has a powerful mobile GPU that allows for amazing graphics when gaming. So, is there really that much difference between this iPad mini 6 desktop setup and a typical home desktop PC for around the same price? Plus, you have the advantage of just disconnecting your iPad mini 6 from the USB-C hub and desktop setup and have the most powerful tablet pad in its price range that’s super portable and convenient. In the setting-up of this iPad Mini 6 2021, I also explain and show how to connect various peripherals. Here’s a list of some of the things I show in the video. How to connect an iPad Mini 6 to a TV or computer monitor. How to connect wired internet cable to an iPad Mini 6 using ethernet. How to connect a USB audio interface to an iPad Mini 6. This is super helpful - thanks for sharing David! You've just saved me thousands from getting a new laptop for video editing, and buyer's remorse from getting an iPad mini!
Glad I stumbled upon this as it's answered so many of my questions ahead of buying the Mini 6th gen. Thank you so much for the detail and your time putting this together. Absolutely superb!
Funny you should say that. I actually live on the same road that John grew up on in his teens and I went to the same secondary school as Paul. One of my relatives was also one of John’s friends, worked with them at Apple and was also the founder of the the Mersey Beat Magazine. Small world 👍 Cheers, Dave.
Fantastic video. Thank you. I had wondered how far I could take using my iPad Mini 6 for my day to day computing, and here is the answer. Next stop, using it for gaming...oh...you have a video on that too 😁
Very impressive. 😮🎉❤ I knew the iPad mini was powerful. But this is a lot more powerful than I had thought 💭. Have you edited any videos on the iPad mini?
Hi, Ricky. Yes, the Mini 6 is a lot more powerful than it looks, especially when you connect a hub or dock to it. As for video editing, LumaFusion works great with it. You can use it with just the Mini’s screen, although, that’s a bit too small for me personally and not so easy. However, using a USB C hub with mouse, keyboard and a monitor attached, it’s much easier to use and to navigate the interface. With LumaFusion, you can also edit from externally connected drives. Cheers, Dave.
Hi, Ricky. To be clear, I’ve not made any of my UA-cam videos with LumaFusion, I find it easier editing on my laptop with an external monitor. However, I’ve tested a lot of stuff on my iPads, Pros and Mini, and some of the stuff has been long game captures and LumaFusion has always been fine. I’ve also got DaVinci Resolve on my iPad Pro M2 and as good and as powerful as that software is, LumaFusion on any compatible iPad is way more suited to the touch interface. There are some little niggles with LumaFusion, just as there is with any software but It’s really quite shocking just how good LumaFusion is. Plus, it’s also one of the oldest “proper” video apps on iOS and iPadOS, so the developers have had a lot of experience with it. For a good, solid video editing app on a mobile device, I can’t fault it for what it is and it’s a one time payment, not some bogus monthly payment thing. Cheers, Dave.
Good work 👏 Must have taken a bit of trial and error to get this system as it is. Thanks for sharing. Particularly like the USB-c extension cable that tidies everything up plus means just one point if reconnection each use. 👍
There are adapters for lightning to HDMI but the quality is very low because of the low speed of lightning. USB C is much better because it’s a faster connection, so video is higher quality. Cheers, Dave.
very interesting on the behringer uphoria for audio output, i have question regarding the sound quality , do you use equalizer app on the ipad or leave it the audio output to manage by uphoria ? Thanks before, great video very informative.
Hi Marc. Looks like the product codes may have changed since the link was made. Here’s a link to another hub, this is a re-branded version of the same one in this video. DockTeck and CableCreation have the same parent company and many of their products are identical with just a re-branding. I think the brands are for different territories. I’ve been sent this one to review and should have it next week www.amazon.com/dp/B0967WZBGZ Cheers, Dave.
I need the iPad to be my remote for my windows desktop when I'm far away from it, so my question is if I put a USB flash drive through the SOHO hub can the remote windows read it or if I download the file to the iPad can I copy the file from the iPad to the remote windows I'm streaming ??

Thanks 👍🏻
Hi. That's something I've not extensively tested. I will do that soon, I have Netflix and Prime. Keep an eye on my channel, I'm doing a lot of videos about the iPhone etc. but will try this out as soon as I can, it's definitely worth trying out as it will help. Thanks for asking. Cheers, Dave.

is there any way to figure out if a given dock will do the full screen top to bottom thing? bought one on amazon before watching and its letterboxing. i assumed my issue was that i old have old 1080p hdmi cables but i guess i could have bought a bad dock as well
Hi David, I would like to use the Mini 6 for video editing. Are 64 gb enough (lumafusion + usb c hub +external ssd + sd card reader + 8 gen ipad as preview monitor via sidecar )? It should work, but is the workflow still convenient? regards
"I know a little bit about audio" is an understatement 😂 4K60 pro res was impressive on the dock. I really like the behringer interface. Might pick one up for my Logic Pro projects! Having that long usb c cable really cleaned things up!
Alright Tone. Sorry I’m late catching up with your comments, I’ve been up the wall doing videos for these Apple things, some game stuff for my new iPad game channel and some stuff for the vloggy thing. Will catch up soon though. Anyway, yes, that 4K60 ProRes was off its head 😀 I’ll do a video soon just about the audio interface and the Mini with a cable, not the hub, it just connects with a USB C printer cable. Cheers, Dave.
Hi David, have you ever tried a lightening to hdmi cable and used an iphone for cod mobile? I heard there is latency because of the conversation done with the chip from lightening to hdmi
Hi Paul. Yes, the latency is huge, about half a second, and makes gaming impossible. Because the Lightning connection is basically USB 2, it has a very low bandwidth. This means a very compressed video stream has to be used, which is what’s sent between the iPad and the HDMI output of the cable/interface. It’s also only 1080P and the quality is very noticeably low and tends to look quite broken up in high detail, fast action stuff. It’s the same for any Apple portable device that uses Lightning, iPhones and iPads. I’m going to be getting the 14 Pro Max and will see if there’s other alternatives with Air Play. Air Play will still have latency but I’m wondering if a fast router will reduce the latency. I’ll also see if there is any advantage to using an Apple TV as well to send the picture to the TV. No matter what, I’ll do a video about it. Technically, Apple could reduce the latency by using a faster to compress and decompress video codec for the connection between the device and the HDMI output. This could also be made possible with the newer, more powerful, hardware and software of the newer iPhones, if Apple chose to do so. In any event, from what I understand the best interface is the one that Apple sell, which may actually be made by Belkin. The only real way to game with an external monitor/TV with Apple portable devices is to use any iPads with USB C. Even the latest iPad Mini is awesome and I suspect the Air and new iPad which will have USB C will be the same. These all use one of the DsiplayPort protocols. These all technically still have latency but it’s lower than a frame at 60Hz/FPS, which basically means that gameplay feels immediate. I used to make videos that explained such things but it seems that there’s only a very small amount of people who are into such things, most viewers see these types of videos as being boring. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry Thanks for clarifying, I don't feel any noticeable lag using a 2018 IPad pro with 8bitdo pro 2 controller, I love your Ipad Mini setup though!!!!
👍👍 How does Lumafusion fare editing off an external drive while simultaneously using the external monitor connection? (Ie: Editing two 5K video tracks @ 30fps and maybe one track of audio while ALSO using large/secondary monitor displaying the preview window.) Will it glitch on editing? How about scrubbing? ~ Wondering whether the single USB connection & the 3.1 hub are up to the task when the HDMI connection is also used?
I was not expecting to see Genshin Impact from the PRORES 4444 File, very amazing indeed! haha I also have an Ipad Mini 6th and I want to do a lot more stuff with it so thank you~
I’ve got loads of docks and hubs and this one is defo the best. It works on my Windows PC, my MacBook Air and all three iPads. It’s ports are mega fast on all my things but I can measure the speed properly on my Windows PC and the SD card reader is the fastest I’ve had. With that ProRes example you can see just how fast it was with the T7 SSD as it was streaming without any issues and that was ProRes 4K60 4444. It’s awesome to have the Ethernet port as well but the clincher for me is it’s full height 4K60 HDMI output. You can see how good the HDMI is with all my game capture stuff. Until I find better, this is defo my main/only recommendation for a USB C hub. Cheers, Dave.

I also have an Ipad Mini 6th and I want to do a lot more stuff with it so thank you~
Will deffo be getting one of those docks. Looks great.
p.s you were right about there being lots of cables lol
Excellent video. Thanks
You are very welcome. Cheers, Dave.
