OMG, that’s a rat paradise, but how do you have the time and energy to keep it all clean? We have a quadruple Critter Nation cage and 3 rats. It’s not nearly as elaborate as yours, and keeping it clean is as much as 2 senior sisters can handle. They do have a bio active substrate in the bottom of one side, and they spend a lot of time digging new tunnel systems and flinging substrate everywhere. It’s such fun to watch them. 🐁🐁🐁

It’s a lot cheaper than you’d think! I’ve had rats for nearly 10 years now and have gotten a few lucky breaks with cages - my first single unit I got during Black Friday new for about $100, but then the next 2 units I got a few years later for $70 off Facebook marketplace. Then early last year I got one unit free with 3 senior rats that I took in, and then a friend who bred rats gave me the last double for free late last year when they decided to stop keeping rats for a while. So all and all I’ve only paid ~$170 for this entire cage, which is less than a single unit is new normally. I never planned to have more than a double so it was really just chance and people being very generous that allowed me to build to this - I recommend keeping an eye on Facebook marketplace because I often see double units posted for $100 or less used. The toys are more pricey, however I get most from my local thrift stores so that really cuts down on costs (same with fabric, my local thrift shop has a fabrics bin where all fabric is 50 cents to a dollar regardless of size). The few times that I buy stuff new it’s always something I know will last for years - so think space pods, bamboo bridges, ledges, etc. I very rarely get rid of toys because of this, so typically the stuff bought new is used for 5+ years easily. Some of my stuff has been with me since my hamster days (15+ years)! I do occasionally have to reglue screws as they wear down the wood with use, but other than that and cleaning them every few weeks they don’t need much maintenance. The main thing I go through is fabric, as I don’t find that worth washing most of the time (unless it’s some fancy hammock, but I rarely get those). But most of my fabric is from old clothing or old bedsheets, or thrifted, so it’s not too big an expense.
That cage looks incredible . . . but I don't envy you having to clean it.

Yes!😂 I am lazy bum when it comes to cleaning cage, but I do cleaned every two weeks or once a week.
