  • We were called out to investigate a situation where a mother raccoon and her babies were living inside a playhouse in a backyard. The playhouse was being used as a storage location for cushions over the winter. This mother raccoon must have taken one look at the playhouse and knew it was the perfect spot to raise her babies.
As you will see in the video, these babies were about 4-5 weeks old, which is quite old for this time of year. The video was taken on April 11th.
Please give this video of thumbs up if you enjoyed it!

I have raccoon families every season in my backyard. I let them be. They leave and some return at night only. I have a young mother that returns and sleeps in the yard. Her own siblings pushed her away from food when she was younger, she is sweet and docile. She brought her own babies this past season and stayed for months. Babies grew up and mama returns a few times at night during the week. I also have opossums and their babies. Beautiful critters.

Do you feed the raccoons and opossums? I’ve never seen a real opossum, only on tv and in videos. Do keep an eye on your soffits and any possible entrance points to your house; you don’t want any animals living in your attic space as the damage costs can be considerable. Having said that, I applaud you for your kindness and your decision to share the land with the four-footed creatures.
I feed birds in my yard and I was delighted to see a squirrel coming by to have some peanuts. I leave a bowl of cat crunchies outside in a covered area along with a bowl of water for any hungry animal. I don’t know if it’s homeless cats or what eats it but it’s regularly cleaned out and I change the water frequently.

@@sharong8511 Hi Sharon. Yes, I do feed them all. There are burrows the opossums have dug over the years and both opossums and raccoons live in, separately from one another. The come and go all year round. Both have been caught inside my garage, the raccoons leave without a problem, but the opossums were young and they made themselves a bed and only left once they were ready. Both critters poop in one area, and oposums are very clean animals and will groom themselves steadily. I rescued a baby opossum that was attacked, her head and face was injured. Had her for 3 months, she healed and was ready to be wild. Both critters keep my yards free of bugs and clean up well. My mama raccoon is friendly only, the others are wild, they come, eat and leave every night. The opossums are friendly, they do not attack, they will show their teeth and hiss when scared. Some raccoons will attack when scared or protecting their babies. Always check the pouch of a dead opossum, there could be babies. Contact your local wildlife rehab. Thank you for your kind words.

I watched a mom raccoon leading her babies from the neighbor's yard, into mine, walk the tall privacy fence and then jump to the other neighbor's tree from the top of my fence. Three of her babies made the jump, but one wouldn't even try. She came back, chirped at it, showed it a couple more times how to do it but it was too afraid. She then collected the babies back into my yard and found a different path using the yard behind mine so they all could follow her. I was impressed by how she tried and solved the problem a different way.

I feed the feral cats in my area. I made nice insulated cat hotels for them and stacked them in my metal shed. They really do live in them, and most fare well there. One bitter winter a couple didn't make it, but most stay pretty healthy year round with the good food I feed them.
I was changing out the straw from the hotels one summer. I reached in and pulled out the old and put in new straw. My daughter had gotten them out of the shed for me so I didn't notice one hotel was a bit heavier. As I picked up this one cat hotel I noticed the weight and was putting it down to check it when a huge fluffy possum with teeth
    >-----------THIS LONG-----------< slid down my legs, onto my shoes, and waddled into the shed. I had my hand in that hotel and it didn't try bite me. And it didn't run from me when it jumped out.
I knew there was one nearby. I saw it many times as I came in late at night from work for a few years. Same possum?🤷 I wonder if it was habituated to me from living so close and just paid little attention to me. I'd seen it eating the ferals' food many times. There are never babies around. Must be the dad of many though.
I did notice when my dog was still living that she never had a tick. Not one. The possum sat on a fence and watched Lucy bark at him like a fool dog at times when she was outside. Now I know that possums will eat thousands of ticks. So this guy has certainly earned his keep. He can have all the cat food he wants. I wonder how long he will live. The internet says with good nourishment and protection about 6 years. Either this isn't the original guy or he's pretty old now. Maybe 8 years. He's had good, well protected, accommodations. I will hate to lose him.

They are just so damn adorable I really feel bad for the moms before they come and get them because in the meantime they're thinking they just lost all their babies and you guys took them but it's a great story and I love what you guys do.... I just finished the videos it's kind of sad because she kept looking at the playhouse door cuz she's trying to figure out where to take all her babies I don't know why these people just didn't let her finish out letting them grow up in there since they weren't using the playhouse and and then locking it up it would be hard to be a mom with six babies and then not knowing what to do with them when you were in a safe place it's a hard world out there much less was six babies

I know. I wish I did not watch this video. She is now homeless with 6 babies. Humans think everything belongs to them, even the Earth itself which God gave to all of us to share. She looked so comfortable in there.
I am giving this video a thumbs down because they acted as though they did something great for the animal when all they did was serve their human master which comes in the form of paper with green ink on it.
Sure, they will get likes because the babies are cute, but then again all that they wanted to do was profit from the animal.

@@justanotherguy469 Normally I would side with you. But as someone else said, "They establish more than 1 place in advance before they make 1 of the places a home. But I do agree with you that people should let them be and finish raising them there since they were only about 1 month to go before they were to start going everywhere with their mother and live all over the outdoors. They people weren't going to be using the Playhouse for a few more months anyhow. So they weren't hurting anything or anyone. But as Gates Wildlife Control says, they do go to 1 of their backup locations they established. But then again, what if their backup established locations had already been occupied or something had happened to them during the time she was raising her babies at the current location? Personally, if I owned the oproperty, I would have brought them food on the daily basis, and tamed up the mother to be friendly, and live on my property as long as she wanted until she dies, or decides she wants to move on. I wouldn't mind having them around. I am like "James Blackwood - Raccoon Whisperer: www.youtube.com/@JamesBlackwoodRaccoonWhisperer". I would also do the same with Foxes, or Opossums. Screw the Rats and Mice though. The Rats and Mice can just go somewhere else. I can't stand them. Destroys everything, food, clothing, the yard, the house, you name it. Foxes and Raccoons and Opossums can be trained, and even Potty-Trained.

I had a raccoon mom and her newborns living in my attic, the problem being my furnace was up there and I didn't want it destroyed. A local wildlife person told me that with the moms, you can buy raccoon male pheromones online, rub some on a rag or tennis ball and toss it up in the attic to frighten her so she would relocate her family. Otherwise it can be very expensive to take down drywall to remove them. I did the pheromone solution and it worked great. She moved her family the very next day. It's much less expensive than hiring someone to remove them physically

It might be that they can count at least some (even bees can count up to 5 on different shapes - when tought which number will give them sugar) but not remember those numbers for any amount of time when actually counting and then needing to use that knowledge later.
It is one thing to exercise an abstract concept that gives benefit but entirely different one to form memories around something you dont understand.
Perhaps not the best analogy: you can read a number of any size, but you can hardly remember a 6 digit number. For them this 6 digit is simply 1 digit or less in reading and 0 in remembering.

    • @finalfantasy3808
      @finalfantasy3808 Рік тому +3

This planet was made for us humans, hence why God gave us dominion over every animal:
"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it..."-Gensis 1:26-28
We are created in the image of God, and since God is Spirit, that means we also have a spirit. We have a soul as well. The soul is our personality, it's our individuality, it's what makes us unique from one another. So when we humans die, our soul goes with our spirit. Whether to heaven or hell, because having the image of God means having a sovereign will to choose right or wrong, evil or Holiness, to be eternally with God or to be eternally separated from God.
But Animals only have a soul, so when they die, their soul dies with the body. Though animals do not gather in churches, read Bibles, understand parables, symbols, and riddles, nor build libraries to pass knowledge on to the next generation like us humans, they do still worship the creator like we do.
Testimony of Former Witchdoctor from Congo:
"As we were about to start our work [witchcraft], we heard over our heads a choir who sang a beautiful melody. Everyone remained calm to admire the beauty of the song. Its contents were:
      'We move with ease.
We live in quiet and peace,
in the shade of large trees.
      Who deserves the credit?
That all credit goes to God,
      our Creator!
Whose? To God, the only Creator of heaven and earth.
To Him be praise and honor and glory forever!'
Our all eyes turned towards the place from whence the melody had charmed us. A surprise sigh escaped our four chests when we discovered the source of the voice. Perched on a branch, seven wild birds were the authors of this beautiful text (Psalm 150: 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise You the LORD.). What had surprised me most was not that pigeons can sing, but rather the content of their song.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, God speaks in different ways. But because I was blind, I could not see the hand of God behind the words spoken by these birds. But that day, I lost interest in magic. Something inside me urged me to think, "How the animals, the birds, they know the existence of a Creator God that we must honor, while I, who am a man, I do not know the Creator." I did not have the courage to continue my research. I went home and the others followed me.
On the way back, I decided to give up magic [witchcraft]. But the idea of dying young scared me. I had only a couple of decades. So I decided to serve [satan] again until I reach 70 years"-LISUNGI MBULA, "The Song of the Wild Pideons"

Because it’s their job to remove them. If the homeowner wants them out then they’ve decided to have them removed one way or another. Not all places do humane rescues. This is the best deal the animals are going to get.
Racoons are a primary carrier of rabies. Many people don’t care to take the risk. They also tend to damage property as well and there are people who don’t care for that.
When I grew up people would just put out antifreeze. It’s a clear liquid that is tasteless and animals will drink it thinking it’s water. Which ends up killing them because it’s poisonous.

Our next door neighbours have a huge cedar tree in their backyard and there used to be a garden shed underneath it; the shed was raised off the ground and made a perfect nursery for raccoons. As I was waiting for the cat to come up the stairs I saw what looked like a huge cat come around the corner of the neighbour’s house, only to see the ringed tail and realize it was a very large raccoon. But I worry about where the mamas will find a new home for the little ones. I guess we all do. In town, it may be a place where they are also unwanted. My city is moderately sized, but there is farmland and woodlands nearby. That is one piece of luck.
At this age they play like kittens. So cute!

If the sun hits that Plexiglass won't the babies bake.? Like leaving a dog in a closed car. I know it's cold there but still could be a problem. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Seems like they need to put some air holes in it or maybe there are, but not visible.

Hi Karen, thank you for your concern. We are aware of the plexiglass being an issue in direct sun. We won't be using this box once it is warmer in Ontario and will never leave the box in the direct sunlight. This box was protected by the shelter of the playhouse and it was only 0 degrees out that day.

Three things: 1) I have not been known as the most gentle of mothers, but man, I don't feel so bad now! LOL 2) I'm surprised mom didn't figure out to turn the box on its side so the door was closer to the floor since huge trash cans don't seem to be any trouble for them. Is the box that heavy? 3) Boo hiss to the homeowner for being so cold-hearted, especially since they caused the problem in the first place by being lazy. Would it have killed them to wait a week or two longer?

But they would have to have waited a bit longer, the kids don’t come out of the nest for a good bit....the owners could have waited for that time....at night they go foraging all in one line...so cute....they could have just shut it up after they left at evening.

wild animals do not belong in human buildings. It's not cold blooded to remove them, it's smart and safe.
