  • It was high time we had a chat about where Eden’s Angora has been, and answer the question- do I even still have rabbits?

You just came up on my You Tube feed which is great timing as I am a Hand Spinner -primarily wool - and what to play more with blending Angora fibers with my wool and other fiber acquisitions. Each Angora Rabbit you introduced was definitely eye-candy 😍and I never knew there were so many options! I subscribed so I can learn more :)

I love this, I just stumbled across this video and I cannot believe how much we are on the same page! I've been raising angoras since 2019 and I have recently become so inspired to finally start spinning! I am also planning to start riding lessons along with grooming. I feel the angoras and grooming will sort of go hand in hand. You go girl!

    Welcome back Alyssa!
I also found you on your hiatus. We each need time to reflect and regroup. My hiatus was mid June to September. I had to stop working bc of fibromyalgia and repetitive motion disorders. I would love a small farm on our acre, but my husband doesn't😢. With my limited body, I know I can pick up and care for small animals. So I brainstormed and researched rabbits, chickens, and turkeys. I still spend my free time watching homestead videos and reading various articles. I saw which breeds were on the Livestock Conservancy List and was shocked by how many of each small animal were threatened, critical, or recovering from near extinction 😮.
I began with rabbits in September 2023. I spent a few weeks doing research on rabbit breeds and their needs. Learned how to harvest rabbits humanely via online and in person. Bought my first 2 does on Sept 24, then 2 does and 2 bucks on Sept 25. By the first week of December I had a total of 20 rabbits that I bought or were needing a new home. Five are Angoras. From one breeder I have a 7 week old buck and doe Agouti French, and from another breeder a 2 yr old broken black German Satin buck, a 7 month old broken black German Satin buck with more German than previous one, and a big 4 month old purebred Vienna Tort German buck.
My other rabbits are 5 New Zealands, 4 English Lops, 3 Champayne d'Argents, 2 Rex, and 1 American.
Spring of 2024 we are constructing an 8ft x 20ft building for my rabbits and start chickens. Better lives and control over what our animals eat means healthier food for us.

Wow!! That’s an amazing story! Thank you for sharing! Battling chronic Lyme and having a husband that doesn’t enjoy caring for animals I empathize and am glad we can be there for eachother!

What a lovely, vulnerable, honest video. I'm watching from the UK, have two angoras, I don't produce fibers but rather keep them as pets but still love your videos and I'm looking forward to more🐇

So glad you haven't given it up entirely . But I know what you mean - over 40+ years I have gone through many of these us and downs. It is labour intensive and it is not feasible to expect a full income from it unless you have the passion and are young and energetic and can invest in some machinery . Machines can help a lot . Like a good (wet) felting machine. I got the large Belfast felter and do love it . Angora makes luscious felt . The learning curve is long though but worth it . Same with the circular sock machine. But if in for the long haul these eventually bring the return. With any fiberarts biz it takes 7 years before the investments are paid for a better return. I could not work at it full time until I retired and was able to have a pension source for a living and then could devote the time to it . The trouble then was getting diverted into the larger fiber animals . I gave that up with covid after 14 years and now only have the bunnies again. But I do admire your savvy to keep trying. But with focus it is possible. I do believe a better network like alpaca folks have would help a lot . It is otherwise very solitary except for the festivals. Bonne chance.

So glad your break was productive and that you are back 😁
As for video ideas, one on your favorite angora grooming products that have worked well for you vs ones that were a waste of money would be pretty awesome. I also always enjoy hearing different people explain rabbit genetics for things like color/coat if you have any knowledge nuggets to share on that topic.
Edit to the grooming tools - I guess it would only make sense to make that if you have any updates from your previous one 😁

Sure! I mean- not any updates that I know of- to me it’s not as much about the tools as the hands that use them and the regularity of grooming. Thanks for the comment and the welcome back!

I actually found you on your hiatus and it’s so nice to see someone who truly cares about the animal’s well being! As a former vegan myself, I place a high value on animal welfare and am loving your account. It’s 100% inspiring me to possibly get a few angora rabbits 😍

I just commented on a video you posted two years ago, addressing some rabbit care issues. Every single one of these issues is not a personal mistake you have made but rather widespread cultural practice. It is clear you have real passion for animals and love them very much. You take care of them to a standard that has been taught for decades. Im sorry but your rabbits do not have enough space and do not look happy. The reason they are so calm and so well behaved is because they are confined. There are simply too many of them for 1 person or even a few people to have a relationship with all of them. Breeding animals for personal enjoyment or money is very very hard to do ethically even when you love every one of them. And often not profitable because it costs so much to begin with. Keeping them as pets is hard enough. This is due to generational malpractice, rampant misinformation, a horribly designed product market and the very nature of domesticating animals. I cannot see where their water is coming from in the video, but i assume it is bottles. Yes, bottles help with messes and the bunnies can’t move them, but they also cause broken teeth, severe dehydration, leading to many illnesses and death, and they frustrate and confuse the animal. The best option is weighted bowl. If an animal cannot even touch or see a surface of water, what kind of life is it living? And I know this seems very harsh but I say this all having made every one of these mistakes, I have tried my best to correct them and I could still take care of my rabbit better. They may not be as smart as us but if we’re being honest, they need the same exact things. Abundant space. A variety of food. Natural stimulation. And not just sometimes. All the time. The only time a bunny should spend in a cage or crate is when they are in a car, or the real enclosure is being cleaned. I apologize for repeating everything I said in the comment on your other video, but I would urge you to make the changes that you can. This would include decreasing the number of rabbits by selectively adopting them out to good homes, giving each rabbit or groups of rabbits at least the amount of space shown at 7:50, but honestly they should have more. I cannot stress enough that rabbits, as well as many other small animals, should not be living in cages. They are way too smart. I admire and relate to your love for them and I always feel horrible whenever I tell people these things but I have to. I said in the last comment that I had to live through the guilt of watching my animals suffer, but they had to endure the suffering. I was spreading my resources, time, space too thin among them yet they paid the greatest price.
(Random notes- always hold rabbits with both arms. rabbits do not like to have their ears pulled or held. not sure why you blow dried the rabbit but. Just don’t do that.. probably hurts his ears and he only sat still because he was shocked. and don’t bathe them.)
