Thanks for your time in making this. I would assume many people who came to this video, were looking for a way to not have to push that button every single time they use their vehicle.
Glad it helped! thank your government it can he off but will revert to on when you turn the car back on. i asked service if they could go in with the laptop and cut it tobe off by default and they said no
There are several aftermarket plug-ins that defeat Engine Stop Start technology.
@@SatelliteGalaxy where can I get it and is it diy?
This shoul be off by default so only people that want to seriously decrease the useful life of their car use this garbage feature.
You can thank your government for the fact you have to shut it off. To comply with CAFE standards and to maintain fleet standards it has to be on unless disabled by the driver. I am just glad that Toyota gives you the ability to disable it, some manufacturers do not give you that option.
Steven Welch it is only to make the CAFE numbers look better. There is no way this helps with emissions. Maybe, maaaaaybe it would with a 5 minute delay but that would be useless too. This garbage came from the useless Obama admin. All they brought was more and more overburdensome government. Probably something else passed and then read later like the “affordable” care act. Starters aren’t built for this. Engines are definitely not built for this. This kills average running time. I just cannot imagine paying anything to buy something I have to remember to turn off. This makes cars disposable lease fleets.
@@johnbecnel693 I shut it off every time I get in my car and have tried to see if service can reprogram it to default to off. They cant.
You can have the evil stop start technology permanently disabled. But you MUST do it as a condition of sale at the time you buy. The dealer can easily program this feature off. They do this for most government vehicles and police departments. If your dealer won't do it, go to another dealer. Engine Stop Start technology was developed for the SOLE purpose of improving the EPA, MPG number during their non-realistic test. In the real world it does virtually nothing to save fuel, but it DOES wear out your engine faster. Nothing is harder on a car engine than when you start it. There are several aftermarket kits that can defeat Engine Stop Start technology.
Dealers Cant or wont do it. I want mine off and there is not a way to shut it off.
My dealer permanently disable this feature. I had to speak to the service manager. Took them 5 minutes.
Extra break to activate you can ignore it and would not shut off the engine
3:20 is what you want to know. His information is spot on but I was just here because everything is video now since no one reads. Thanks my man for showing me where it’s at.
Happy to help. Thank you for watching
The start stop will make the other suppliers sell 10 billion more starters and batteries.
the starters are built to handle the extra starts. they should last as long as any other starter.
Like you said maybe they added another 100,000 click before it dies
Having just bought a 2021 Limited, I have made it "standard procedure" after starting the car to hit the on/off button. After that I hit the "Map" button on the display to show my favorite screen (temp controls) with the map. Hit the back button on the steering wheel to get the large speed indicator preferred screen. Then I am good to go. :)
Sounds like a plan
@@stevenwelchtoyota Oh! And fasten the seat belts. :)
I have a 2020 Highlander Platinum with 28K miles. During 30K maintenance Toyota tested the battery and suggested I replace the battery. They wanted $410. I purchased a more powerful Interstate Battery Group H6 AGM with 760 CCA. The battery cost $179.
You may have a issue if it is the wrong battery. I have seen the dash light up like a Christmas tree
Great video. I just check and my Highlander has this recall. Thanks. I will shut it off and wait for Toyota to fix this
Remember to shut it off every time you start the vehicle
@@stevenwelchtoyota remember to kill your car XD
To those who are interested, these start-stop systems are going to put more wear on your crank bearings and rod bearings, and that is not at all good for your engine. Not to mention the demand on your starter. I am not a fan. Works fine in a hybrid, but if I have an option, it is going off. Thet are pennywise and pound foolish.
Thank cafe standards for that
Engine Stop Start technology was developed for the SOLE purpose of improving the EPA, MPG number. In the real world it does NOTHING to save fuel, but it DOES wear out your engine faster. Nothing is harder on a car engine than when you start it. PERMANENT, Plug-In override kits are available for Toyotas and many other vehicles.
The starter was redesigned to be able to last much longer with the engine starts. I personally dont like the system but at least with a Toyota you can shut it off
@@stevenwelchtoyota I installed the PERMANENT Stop-Start override. Better gas mileage and reduced wear on the engine.

My mechanic loves this start stop mode option. Now he gets to charge me for a new starter and battery sooner because of wear and tear
Toyota has a heavier starter and battery for the vehicles with the start stop mode. They will last just as long as the vehicles without the start stop mode that have the standard starter and battery
Not to mention the extra engine wear.
@@sptrader6316 it would actually be less engine wear if its not running
Imagine the internal combustion engine firing up every 45 seconds at the mcdonald drive thru. Prematurely wears engine...ouch. Watch scotty vid

We just bought a 2020 Platinum AWD and I need to leave it idling sometimes. I pushed button and turned it off and the vehicle still cut off after like 30 mins. Stupid as hell what if you need a/c to stay running.
Climate can override the start stop mode
How can a turn off AWD in toyota Highlander 2020 ?
it will be in front wheel drive unless it sees the need to use the awd. for fuel economy it trys to stay in front wheel drive
I was wondering what that triangle illuminated was for. Now i know how the disable it from mu 2020 highlander

Hi, I have a 2020 Camry. I need it, NOT to auto shut down, while parked. I am in Chicago and stay in the car for long time for my business.
Can you please help me. How to disable this feature.
Thanks 👍
is it a hybrid?
@@stevenwelchtoyota yes
@@muslimsforjesusmovement4255 then that just defeats the purpose of a hybrid
I cannot find the button on my 2023 highlander platinum hybrid. I'm also in Canada so maybe mandated here?
Hybrids are different
I worked on a car with stop start. Because of the issue I was trying to debug it had to sit and idle for a long time. It kept turning the engine off then back on every few minutes. I had to do work under the hood. Had my hands in there. The engine would suddenly start. Scared the heck out of me. I am just darn lucky I can still count to ten. I think stop-start should automatically be disabled if the hood is open.
A toyota does not work that way unless it's a hybrid. If it is then you can trick the system to keep the engine running by demanding a load. Turn the AC on full it will draw enough energy to keep running usually. That being said the hybrids are not start stop mode they just shut off when the battery has a sufficient charge.
Yank the harness off the hoodlatch. It disables the stop start. Zip tie it up. Doesnt work with remote start though. Only drawback is a "S/S is disabled" occasional message in the cluster, but its white letters. No more having to push the dash button, and no more bright yellow light on in the cluster. Worked on my 19-20 Ravs.
@@tonybalogna6883 I tried that on my 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross and that didn't work. It was showing a message with the chime ding ding ding that the hood was open. So i have to use the button to shut it off every time i start the car and put up with the yellow light in the dash. In Canada, the dealer will not turn that feature off permanently.
My car was recalled to reprogram, it did not prevent the Start / Stop. You might want to try to remove the fuse, i believe it is blue #15 that operates the Start / Stop and see if that disables it.
thanks
2024 RAV4. I want to disable it till hell freezes over
I know
My new rav4 has that option however it only activates when I come to a complete stop and put extra pressure on the break pedal. Not a big deal and I do use it in certain situations.
That is how it works in all Toyotas
I just got a new rav and took and trip, everything was smooth until coming back home and I must of been breaking harder because car almost vibrated and that A light came on. I thought something was going wrong with car.
I got a 2021 RAV4 xle auto start-stop sucks anyway to delete that?
You have to hit the button each time you use the vehicle
@@stevenwelchtoyota ya it’s very annoying having to hit the button every time, I want to permanently disable that auto stop-start so it’s stays on without having to hit the button
@@hiimwill3086 I want that too. The only way to get it is to have your elected officials change the fuel economy standards. That is the reason for it.

Please edit to remove the cuss word. Trying to keep a channel clean
How to PERMANENTLY disable it is the question.
Ask service department to do it
On my RAVs I unplugged the hood latch harness at the hood latch. No more pushing the off button everytime you drive. NO yellow light on either. Once in a while a little message will pop up and go away about being disabled. Worked on my 2019 and 20 RAVs.
@@stevenwelchtoyota In Canada, the service department won't do it.
How do I permanently disable this by Default, Does anyone know!! I seriously dislike this feature. Who can help me?
Due to governmental restrictions it is unable to be permanently disabled or turned to a off mode as a default
Plenty of easy to install kits to turn this off permanently, browse youtube highlander videos.
Ebay the cable to disable it.
That help your Engine or not? What is the bad side of that ? And the god side?
does not help or hurt the engine just saves gas
It wears out your engine faster and adds unnecessary complexity to the drive train. Avoid cars with this design defect. At most, it will save you 1 gallon of gas in the entire lifetime of a vehicle.
@@SatelliteGalaxy get on your government if you want it gone
So how do I turn it off permanently?
not possible to cut it off permanently, thank your government. you have to cut it off each time you start the vehicle
Unplug the hoodlatch harness, unless you have remote start. No more having to push the button.
@@stevenwelchtoyota Thank the Communist Democrats.
Permanently shut it off
You cant
I found out about this feature just now and had to search it on what it is. It is the most stupidest thing I have ever heard and seen. And the government is to blame? There are serious problems out there, and they government thinks that shutting my car off is a problem solving? How stupid can you be??
By the way thanks for the video. I’m assuming the hybrid does not have this feature? Currently driving a 2019 XLE premium, glad I didn’t wait for the 2020/2021
Technically the hybrid will start and stop as needed but it is not the same system
@@stevenwelchtoyota yeah the hybrid has better components for the auto start of their engines. They are trying to copy it in ice vehicles without the proper equipment. Hate having to push the off button every time I stay my 21 rav4

It takes more gas to restart a vehicle than it does to idle for 10 minutes. Just another way to keep the gas being consumed. Probably put in place by lobbyists for big oil.
That is not true on newer vehicles. Old carbureted models it was true for.
Just another button I push when I get in my truck. I hate that auto start/stop.
It can be disabled in service

Shutting off start stop mode
I WILL BUY NO NEW TOYOTA (OR ANY NEW CAR) THAT i CAN NOT PERMANENTLY DISABLE THIS FEATURE!
Thank your government. The only way to stop that is to talk to them
A bypass cable is available on Ebay for most cars($40), to disable this feature. It's very annoying to most people. It's not just Toyota that's doing this.
MY WIFES 2017 HAS HAD 4 NEW BATTERIES CAUSE OF THIS STUPID FEATURE. THE FIRST TIME IT SHUT DOWN AND DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH BATTERY TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AT A STOP LIGHT. I WANT TO DELETE THIS FEATURE FOR GOOD
What vehicle do you have?
@stevenwelchtoyota hers is 2017 v6 awd toyota highlander. Also her water pump started gushing water about 80k miles luckily it was under warranty.
Mine got stopped in front of a traffic light! I must get it towed to a dealership!😢 Garbage function!
I was stranded in front of the traffic light today because of the engine was put off and cannot restart all of sudden, I need to get it towered to the dealership, only to realize that the battery is bad! I hate this function now very much! it is very likely to get you stranded on road without any advance alarm, especially when your battery is close to its life‼️ My car is just one month beyond the 36 M warranty, I actually just did my maintenance several days prior to this incident! It did past the dealer’s test! This system would give you trouble sooner or later!
I wish the standards were different where it didn't require it
The McDonald’s drive-through engine shut down fuel savings comes from me, I simply made it up.

I just put a non start stop battery believe it or not it disable the s/s button 😂
it will disable the system if it senses a weak battery
Just don't hammer the brakes and let go as you come to a stop it's less annoying that way
Or shut it off
Just shut it off when you start the car. Save you starter and battery.
Hopefully I'm not keeping looking at my dashboard and hit something in front of me
@@TheaaMeehm-yx8yl or an animal :D
To replace the starter is over $1100.00 and who knows what the battery replacement would be.
The starter is engineered to take the extra starts and last as long as a system that does not have that feature according to Toyota.
@@stevenwelchtoyota I would never buy a car that had that unless it had the one time option to turn that feature off permanently. The 2022 Toyota Corolla that we bought Saturday does not have that on it.
@@JohnDavis-yz9nq I turned mine off of two Rav4s PERMANENT. Unplug the harness at the hood latch, zip tie it up. No more stop/start or bright yellow light in cluster. You will have a small white letter intermittent message in the cluster that you really don't see. Wont work on remote start cars.
@@tonybalogna6883 I was very lucky. We found a 2022 Corolla that doesn’t have the automatic start and stop. Starting in 2023 that will be a standard feature. This should be our last car.

Obnoxious feature. So, you may save gas but you're using up the life of the starter and battery. The environment gets in the end every time.
The starters are designed to last longer due to that system and batteries tend to have the same amount of life either way
