  • *CORRECTION: At 9:44 I refer to a tomb as a temple, all of the sweat and excitement from the cat village must have fogged up my brain*
I went off on an impromptu day trip on an increasingly rare sunny day in northern Taiwan. Headed out slightly sleep deprived on a one-hour commuter train to the small former coal-mining village of Houtong. Once the coal industry in the region died down it left a village that now has more cats living in it than it does people... aka my kind of place! All I really knew about it before going there was seeing it in my Google Maps and having it saved, so I grabbed the GoPro and headed up into the mountains along the Keelung River to pet some sweet, sweet kitties. The cats are all given their shots, and looked after by the government so you will see in this video that they all have small collars on to track them. The village sort of seemed like an open-world cat petting zoo meets ghost town with all of the abandoned or somewhat abandoned old buildings in the area.
In this video I go over how to get out to Houtong, it's history, show the sights, trespass on people's property on accident multiple times, and pet a significant portion of the town's cat population (as well as a few dogs!). So basically, if you're looking for a travel vlog of twenty minutes of a grown man baby talking and petting cats then you've come to the right video!
OH! And in this video, I ask a question about the water tanks you see all over the country if anyone can give me a brief explanation on them I would be very stoked to learn!
If you enjoyed this video be sure to check out my other videos on my channel from places like England, Wales, Poland, Georgia (the country), Lithuania, Portugal, Spain, Mexico, and Jamaica.... and be sure to flatter me by subscribing!

Hi Harry, welcome to Taiwan and I hope you can enjoy ur travel here in Taiwan. Life is full of surprises and I am sure u will like people in here. The temple in this video actually is tomb for people pass away. and this is normally big family bury their ancestors at the same grave asked on traditional culture. No worry you just walked through and did not actually touch anything and this is fine. Welcome to Taiwan and enjoy the trip.

Thank you very much. It has been a great country (my favorite in Asia so far actually). I was thrown off by the size of the tomb, which made me assume it was a temple I suppose!

I think some of those water tanks could be collecting mountain springs. I saw a lot of bamboo pipes alongside of various Taiwan mountains, and some have openings for people walking by to get the spring water. I saw them around Yangming mountain near Taipei. It is easy to get to via metro links. The area has the Palace Musium, but there is a dress code for it, and no sandles. There is also old President Chiang's residence. The whole area is quite nice to walk around and has various different scenics. It's too bad you missed the flower season.

Seems like this country does a much better job at water management than we do in the USA.
I have heard great things about the palace museum, wasn't aware of the dress code for there so thanks for the heads up!

@@HarryXHemispheres I got turned away by wearing sandles once, so I know.

@@HarryXHemispheres The problem with Taiwan is that the center of the island is too tall, so any rain water or melting snow would quickly run into the ocean. It is very necessary to do all sorts of stuff to keep water in place.

I want to let you know the Chinese dragon boat festival (or Duan Wu Jie -- the proper Summer day) is coming soon. We eat leaf wrapped rice dumplings (粽子) and usually there is dragon boat racing. This year may not have the dragon boat racing because of coronavirus, but don't forget to eat the special leaf wrapped rice dumpling. There are different fillings. Ask the locals to get good ones.

I hadn't heard of that, but if I am still here by then I'll be sure to check it out! I've ate dumplings at least once a day for maybe a month now.

9:44 It is not a temple. It is a tomb.....

I was incorrect in my assumption, pardon my ignorance! *face palms*

You are a foreigner. It is normal that you can't tell what the difference is between our temples and tombs. You did not say disrespectful words or have disrespectful action. I think the owner of that grave would welcome you for a short visit.
