    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on a Mega SG.
    2. I used Game Genie codes for infinite ammo and life in a few places. I did this so you could see the weapons fire consecutively for more prolonged periods and to see the background effects in the savanna. While playing to actually beat the game, you need to conserve ammo for the right moments.
    3. The raptor sees a stage lineup in a different order. You'll end the game on the cargo ship fighting another raptor.
    4. Kill the pteranodons as soon as they appear in the aviary. Otherwise, they will carry you back to the nest.
    5. The raptor's double jump acts as a secondary attack. It's extremely helpful against the helicopter on the savanna stage.
    6. This game came out around the time Sega switched the cardboard boxes. I didn't own it for years for that very reason.
    7. This game has no opening cinematics. You get the story from the instruction manual. Even the ending scene is just a brief image and a credit crawl.

    The end-boss graphics are, IMO, the most impressive of any graphics in any game on the system. I'll never forget how blown away I was at them as a kid when I finally got that far.

      IIRC they used the same Silicon Graphics CG models from the movie to make the sprites, "Grant" was an actor dressed like Alan Grant and filmed Mortal-Kombat style. I still find it hilarious that the Genesis got like 3 pretty awesome action games but the Sega CD could only fart out a dull point and click.

      Same here! Remember how silly you felt when you finally said to yourself out of frustration “I’ll just jump off the skeleton and land between the raptors……only to notice the raptors never turned around?” 😂. A few grenades later. Done! But also the TRex fights. So good. I think this may have been, along with mortal kombat, the first game to use motion capture on a 16bit system.
      Edit: My bad, I was referring to the first release. The end fight with the TRex on this title is the only thing I really remember about it. Along with the fact the raft sequences were far more intuitive and less trial and error than the first one. This series was literally the first games based on a movie that were worth playing even if you weren’t just playing because of the movie. I also had the Sega CD “point and click” game. I LOVED it. At that time it was the closest you could feel to being in the park. I still remember the audio. Was so spooky lol.

      I think the soundtrack for the 2nd game is decent, but I think the first game's soundtrack is actually very good overal. I suppose if it's not your kind of thing it might just sound like random noises, but there are clear defined melodies and whatnot.

      Same, I always thought the tribal drums were done really well for these two games too. Especially this one, listen to Aviary and Savanna when he plays them. I felt like the drum beats were a good stand-in for a more film type score, it still feels like Jurassic Park to me.

      While I'll admit the GEM was just a bad idea from the start, I loved the music in both these games except the savanna & hidden ruins here. I get the feeling SLX just doesn't appreciate electronic music like this. I honestly wouldn't know it was GEM if he didn't say so. Raptor is crazy OP in savanna in rampage mode, and it makes it the shortest level by time. Rampage Edition was my favorite for casual play on my Nomad while traveling. Both these games blew away the SNES competition (JP & JP the chaos continues) in fast-paced action. The sheer variety of JP content was the best part of this era

    this was always a fave when i was a kid - blew through it when i rented it from blockbuster. I always felt like the devs cut out a level or two because of how the map cuts off the two later stages - maybe there's more hiding up there in the code! Can't believe gaming mags didn't like it back in 94.

    • @hiltwo
      @hiltwo Рік тому +8

      One selectable that's 'hiding' up there, is Burning River (the last section of the River level with Grant). Learned this when Tony Hedstrom over at Sega-16 made Game Genie level codes for the game. I seem to remember ALL the selectables for both players are up there, for both Grant and the Raptor. But it's been a while. We looked into the game's earliest prototypes, doesn't seem like there were going to be more levels. But I would have happily welcomed them. Our Dutch magazine Power Unlimited did like the game, but it was of the few positive reviews I've seen.

    • @tylerwerrin41
      @tylerwerrin41 Рік тому +6

    • @hiltwo
      @hiltwo Рік тому +6

      @@tylerwerrin41 No idea, but I'm interested to look into it again. If we can't see the rest of the map, maybe the levels can be switched around. I wonder if River Run and its extention Burning River have icons as well.

    Absolutely loved this as a kid. The first Jurassic Park was my first Genesis game, even remember calling in on the tips hotline because I couldn't figure out how to beat the final stage as the raptor. This game is definitely much more of a run 'n gun, way faster and less cerebral.
    The river scene is very cool too, and I'm glad it's gotten some love from both Genesis games, as it's one of the cooler scenes from the novel that was cut from the film. The final boss in the red river cavern is awesome too, always stuck in my memory.

    There is a major issue with Rampage Edition which can't be stretched out enough.
    It's ridiculously few and short levels. If they could have graced us with lengthy and numerous levels, like X-Men 2 did, it would have been a masterpiece.

Jurassic Park for Sega CD was also released in first quarter of 1994 and doesn’t get much love but I had a blast playing it and even have a sealed copy of it (along with sealed copies of Sonic CD , Ecco the Dolphin and Snatcher - and no I’m not selling it) stored in my attic in a giant plastic bin with my Game Gear, Nomad, Genesis / 32X / Sega CD monster, my Saturn and Dreamcast.

    Back when developers made remarkable changes from one iteration to their subsequent sequels, even sports titles had major overhauls from one year to another.
    About the music, maybe I'm not too demanding as I find these western gems-based soundtracks charming to a certain degree, in this particular game, the samples you showed remind me a bit of the first MK soundtrack, as far as the percussions go. An interesting action platformer. Speaking of which, have you covered or even tried Ex-Mutants yet?

I also remember, from screenshots and maybe TV commercials, that the first one didn't quite hit the mark visually for me. When Rampage Edition came along, I liked the visual changes a lot, which is odd because I don't usually love such dark outlines on sprites in 2D games, but I think it makes the game visually clearer here. I also like the change in concept for it. Interesting to hear it wasn't as well received because I always thought it was. Perhaps it was just word of mouth among people I knew.

    as a kid I preferred Rampage Edition to the OG because it was "easier" and was what I was more used to with other games I was playing (a lot of shooters, I didn't play this until late '98 so I'd already cut my teeth on Doom and Quake and the like). As I got older and played more games of different types I found myself enjoying Jurassic Park more than Rampage because I preferred the atmosphere of the former.
    Being a huge Resident Evil fan, I always liken Jurassic Park to a survival horror game and Rampage Edition is kind of like how Resident Evil 4 turned from survival horror to survival action, and the subsequent games were more action oriented.
    Also, I had mentioned in your other review that the soundtrack was really nice at establishing the atmosphere in JP. I agree that the soundtrack here isn't the best, Cargo Ship is good and Aviary has it's moments but overall I just think that the tracks themselves are simply uninspiring, regardless of the GEMS nature

    When i got my used Mega Drive this summer this game and the first were a no brainer i had this one as a kid but i never had the first game, so that was an experience to say the least.
    One huge thing about the music, i live in the PAL region and as we all remember, games in the PAL region ran at 30hz not 50hz it happend that a lot of times apperently many games were designed for 30hz first and then ported to 50hz and vice versa i think this was due to how the Genesis/Mega Drive detected the region.
    This impacted not only framerates but the music as well. In the case of this game i highly suggest you listen to the PAL versions, because the NTSC versions feel sped up and they work so much better at 30hz seems that the music was made for 30hz but when switching regions it sped up the tracks. Same as with Sonic 1 and how it slowed down the music the difference is that the music was designed for 50hz so it feels natural while with Jurassic Park the slower tempo is what feels natural.

    I hope 25 or so years from now people on FutureTube will be watching videos about mildly popular games and how they were made, received and played.

    Absolute banger Rampage Edition was ... then again I was looking at the game through the eyes of a younger lad, looking at it now and playing it is a bit of a challenge and a bit frustrating lol. One thing I fubar'd with my modded MD Mini is that I put on the wrong version of Rampage Edition - the PAL one is so much slower it's painful. I was never able to clear the game though or if I did I don't remember.. was the same with the original JP I never really got too close to the end due to the difficulty curve (well hard for me atleast), doubt I'd get as far now without save state scumming if I tried again heh.
    Damnit, SLX, you always give me the nostalgia hit when you put up MD games I thrashed as a wee lad lol.

    I remember that Gamepro review confusing me as well back in the day, i have no idea why they hated this game so much, to me it was perfect, Rampage Edition took everything the original did good, turned it up to a hundred and eliminated all the things that the original did poorly, my only real complaint with this game was them not including the password system, i understand why they probably felt it wasn't necessary but they should have left that in.

    As a kid who loved dinosaurs, this was the very first game I had on the Genesis. I gotta admit the music is pretty bad. It was mostly the savannah music I remember because I used to play it without riding the Gallimimus, which makes the game longer. But it helps in a way because then you don't get swarmed by enemies. I've noticed that Raptors spawn to attack you when riding the Gallimimus, but not if you're on foot.
    Overall I had a lot of fun playing this game and the visuals are awesome especially the water effects. Great review!
