Probably the most terrifying scene in this show for me. The moment the words "Peeping Tom" appeared on the subs my stomach immediately sank knowing what was going to happen to Lain. But they all just stared, which to me is infinitely worse than if they just made fun of her
It's very liminal. You feel a sort of emptiness that is supposed to be filled but never does. Like a picture that is so familiar to you but there's something quite wrong or "missing" from it.
There's actually more music in it than you might recall though, it's not afraid to be silent but the bootleg soundtrack is great and often doesn't draw much attention

What I find funny about this anime is how spot on and ahead of it's time it was, it hits the nail on the head with many things. However, it's so horrendously off with what they thought tech would look like in the future☠️ It gets the concepts rights, but the phones they use and the PC Lain uses are just completely off🗿
Basically the show is Lain going into Psychosis, as the ending for the series shows all the clutter, but the game, same ending, shows it clear and that says that it may have all been in Lains head and she(ending) to stop it which ended the series. All throughout we see how others were afflicted by issues like her sister, who snapped, but I say that scene was her sister having a mental break, and basically became catatonic, because everyone says thats basically her sisters death and yes, you see lain looking at that spirit of her fade, but it’s all in lains head, she’s suffering from Psychosis hence all the disorienting imagery especially in the end scene, and her sister probably just developed some issues as well as it was likely hereditary, I love this series

It's just unsettling. - And the amount of people who stares at her: Think about it, if you ever think of it in real life someone who is using a gadget on the class can be highly noticeable by everyone inside the class, and it's normal. But the fact that, when she go out of the room and even in the other rooms stares to her like the fact that: “ What do they know to what I just did? Why did they ever know? ”, it's just really unsettling for me, and thats miht be because they might be connected as well and will later on leads as to the next - The being " odd " So if ever anyone in the school looks at you, even though you just did something supposedly can only be seen inside the class nor known or the fact that the people outside the room, they stare at her like she's odd, having also carrying the fact that " they stare at me, why? how do they know? what's happening? " is indeed " odd " too, they stare at her, if it was like she's odd, and it's odd to her why, and she didn't know why that would be the point, we tend to fear something we don't fully know, what it can do...what it may be doing, or what is it? In the end of the scene, when Lain starts to mumble "Alisa, where are you?" she gets a message from her that basically states "Don't mind the rumors" which is a phrase from earlier episode. I guess it implicates that since it's not a rumor and everybody knows it, then there's really way to fix this situation physically.
