Lain and her family were very stilted in the Japanese version too, it's intentional. I love it! I've watched both like once a year for the last 5 or 6. its my favorite Anime by far.

I'm convinced the blandness of Lain is intentional solely because of anti-Lains voice acting. It's so much more energetic and psychotic and it perfectly juxtaposes Lain of the world and anti-Lain
Silent Hill 2 has some of the best/worst voice acting ever and it works perfectly. They went out of their way to model the characters after their actors, and they cop to them talking so strangely because the characters are strange people. Angela sounds like an adult woman but talks like a kid because she is a kid that has experienced some rough stuff that has aged her beyond her years. James sounds so stilted and awkward because he is a stilted and awkward guy. Meanwhile Mary/Maria has some of the best voice acting I've heard in a game ever.
because this is the first time that i've seen the dub version of this show, and because i didn't know the english names for the characters, i was a bit startled when lain almost looked toward the camera and said "so julie..."

Lain is an amazing anime but only when you truly understand like I have Proceeds to give an analysis wildly different from everyone else who said the same
i used to think it was one of my least favorite dubs when i just judged it off the first five minutes bc lain sounded too much like a dumb kid instead an awkward teenager, but yeah it bops
It's dubs like these that make me wonder what the voice directors were on when they work with the voice actors in this dub. But it Lain's case, whatever they were on worked kinda well with the tone of the show.
Anime definitely took a sucky turn over the years that didn’t involve Lain. I always loved how doll like and creepy the characters looked BTW. Gives it almost a surreal vibe. Almost all good anime have that quality, too, like they’re self aware or something.

At least from memory, this seems really accurate to the original. All the monotone really fits the show
I feel like it feels stilted and it fits the show rlly well.
This dub is bad, but strangely fitting to the series' themes. Silent Hill is the same way
