That was really unsettling too xD Heck, a lot of anime try to be creepy with a lot of derpy over the top crap, and Serial Experiments Lain can suddenly make its protagonist goddamn creepy by just making her smirk xD

Peopel saying this is anxiety this is straight out of a psychotic episode u guys never hallucinated and didn't know what was real what was not if u think this is just soxial anxiety, the show is more than just anxiety, yes anxiety is present in such psychotic episodes but it's not the only symptoms , girl be having a whole ahh dream reality where she's not connected to reality on a next lvl .

I always thought almost all anime was pretty creepy in so many ways like in many theres a old guy around 50-80 that is constantly trying to pick up or perv on a 11-15 year old. Or the 20 year old man that cant help but fall for a 14 year old. Or the overly perverted way they so someone that looks 7-8 but shes actually 200 or some bs pdo culture is disgusting.

Basically the show is Lain going into Psychosis, as the ending for the series shows all the clutter, but the game, same ending, shows it clear and that says that it may have all been in Lains head and she(ending) to stop it which ended the series. All throughout we see how others were afflicted by issues like her sister, who snapped, but I say that scene was her sister having a mental break, and basically became catatonic, because everyone says thats basically her sisters death and yes, you see lain looking at that spirit of her fade, but it’s all in lains head, she’s suffering from Psychosis hence all the disorienting imagery especially in the end scene, and her sister probably just developed some issues as well as it was likely hereditary, I love this series
