  • During his residence in Montana, C. M. Russell encountered Indigenous peoples, both on the northern plains of the state, and from neighboring tribes in Alberta, Canada. He incorporated Hand Talk (AKA Plains Indian Sign Language, or PISL) into his paintings, revealing those experiences.
Unlike most of the non-Native and non-Deaf artists of the this artistic time period, C.M. Russell is a unique artist who portrayed the Plains Natives using authentic tribal signs. He lived in the area where Hand Talk was an important communication system among the Plains Natives, and Russell personally learned signs and included them in his paintings.

At 24:13: In the time of Russell I think there was no such sign for "respect"; anyway, what would be its etymology? It must come from a contemporary sign talker. In the old times AFRAID ("shrinking from, drawing back, cannot stand up before") was used for "respect, reverence, avoidance, taboo". Sign on painting maybe is BEAR ("standing with paws up").
At 20:28: DOG ("pulling travois") means "dog" or "pulling travois", but not "small animal" or "group of small animals". "Small animal" has another handshape and movement forward, not backward. The sign on the painting also can be HERD, if motionless.
At 29:07: Sign at left (2 forefingers side by side standing): a 2-handed version of FRIEND.

What nonsense. Russell uses sign techniques to bring motion to his paintings.
Trying to interpret these techniques into ISL is pure folly and shows a real lack of experience in either Art criticism or ISL…pure poop
