Several things wrong on this video First There was no colonial Mexico When the Spanish Arrived to America, Mexico became a viceroyalty and then an empire. But Mexico was never a colony. On the other hand the u.s. was a colony in fact 13 colonies, as they were treated as second class citizens for being a colony and not having the same rights, they revolted and had their first civil war.

What nonsense. Russell uses sign techniques to bring motion to his paintings. Trying to interpret these techniques into ISL is pure folly and shows a real lack of experience in either Art criticism or ISL…pure poop 2:41

At 24:13: In the time of Russell I think there was no such sign for "respect"; anyway, what would be its etymology? It must come from a contemporary sign talker. In the old times AFRAID ("shrinking from, drawing back, cannot stand up before") was used for "respect, reverence, avoidance, taboo". Sign on painting maybe is BEAR ("standing with paws up"). At 20:28: DOG ("pulling travois") means "dog" or "pulling travois", but not "small animal" or "group of small animals". "Small animal" has another handshape and movement forward, not backward. The sign on the painting also can be HERD, if motionless. At 29:07: Sign at left (2 forefingers side by side standing): a 2-handed version of FRIEND.

The first cattle herders in Spain were the Celtiberians, more than 2000 years ago, (probably arrived from the steppe of southern Russia, where they were nomadic cattle herders and spoke Indo-European) whose main trade and economy was raising cattle. Due to the special climate that exists in the Iberian Peninsula: the pasture lands in which the grass abounds in summer are good in the northern part, mountainous area, and bad in the southern part because it is very hot, and vice versa in winter, they were forced to move their cattle twice a year from the north of the central plateau to the southwest, about 800 km or more to travel twice a year with the cattle, it is believed that initially using the migration routes of wild bulls or aurochs: it is transhumance. For this reason, the Celtiberians had homes in the northern part of the central plateau and others in the southwestern part of Spain. This continued the same during the Muslim conquest since the central part of Spain was depopulated and without crops, so there was a lot of grassland, although now the descendants of the Celtiberians spoke Vulgar Latin. This culture of raising cattle was taken to all of Spanish America. Africans have never raised cattle, cows, only camels.

One of my late, late family members was Johann Carl Bodmer. Looking at this work you may know who he was. If not, you would like him. He traveled to America with German Prince Maximilian painting Native Americans and the American landscape, at that time mostly in watercolor, on a journey to the Midwestern states somewhat similar to that of Lewis and Clark less than 20 years after they completed their journey to the Pacific Northwest. In 1850 he had work on display at the Paris Salon and fairly recently a book was completed where photographs were taken of the exact same landscapes where he worked in plein air to show the amazing similarities with his art. Jean Claude Monet was his friend and copied 3 of the works he created at Fontainebleau in France, naming the most worthy the Bodmer Oak. He was born in Zurich Switzerland and both a citizen of Switzerland and France. My mother's mothers maiden name was Janet Bodmer. Her fathers name was Herman Bodmer and so forth leading to a brother Johann Karl Bodmer. There were several artists in my family at that time and Johann worked and studied with them. If you have any of his work in your museum, I'd love to see it in a video! 🤗

The observation Renee was trying to share (sorry for the technical difficulties!), was about the figure on the left, the indigenous man. She noticed how the right side of his face is in shadow while the left side is not. She found this helpful in reinforcing and understanding from what direction the sunlight was shining.
