Thanks very kind! I think I’ve done maybe 120 vids now in the last year or so. Give it a few years and hopefully I can make a go to channel for comparisons like this! :)
One advantage of shooting M-lenses on Sony is that with a close focus adapter I can focus down to 20cm with the 50mm Summicron Type V. It’s pretty nifty when travelling to be able to do food photography and macro.
Man I’ve been visiting your website for a few years now. Glad to see you on UA-cam. I prefer manual lenses and it’s nice to see reviews on some rangefinder lenses I’ve been wondering about.
Hi thanks for following the blog and great to have you here! Yes I now wish i'd faced UA-cam 5 years ago but I couldn't think of anything more scary at the time. I'm getting more used to it slowly! :)
hey Matt, you don't have to spend those thousands of dollars just to show us how sharp they are.. what you're showing us/teaching us is way more than enough.. always enjoying and absorbing the tips and tricks you're sharing.. keep it up and always be safe!
Greetings Matt, What I find amazing is that when I using the Nikon DSLR ecosystem the focal length that I had the absolute least amount of love for was the ‘nifty 50’. But now that I’ve made the switch to the Leica M ecosystem, the ‘nifty 50’ is my lens of choice. I share that with you now because you asked your viewers to share their preferred 50. I just purchased a Mint copy of the 50 DR with goggles. That lens is a jewel! My first 50 and subsequently my first love, was the Lux. My second 50 was the APO f2. And I’ve been forced to make room for all three of them because I can’t give any one of them up. Be Blessed! Chaps
Hi Chaps, sorry trying to catch up with all the comments.. I didn't realise when you commented on Patreon that I had outstanding comments from you! I had 100+ comments on the recent video so that pushed all earlier ones to the bottom. Yes I like the 50s both on Leica and Nikon. For Leica especially it just makes sense as on the Leica iii, Leica M3 and similar cameras they were designed around the 50. Congrats on your DR, yes an excellent lens as is the Lux and Nocti v1. I still need to get an APO but i'm not sure I need it/ can afford it! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Matt, no worries. I’m glad that you’re busy. I’d imagine that busy is good for business. Matt, I have another question. You highly recommended the Zeiss 25 2.8 zm. How does that lens compare to the Leica Elmarit M 24mm f2.8 asph 6 bit coded? Between the two, which would you recommend overall? Sorry to have so many questions. Be Blessed, Chaps

Great video :).Thanks for mentioning the easily retractable lens hood on the v5 as I pointed out earlier. The 50/2 v5 was the first Leica lens I bought as used but mint copy.
Wow Matt!! Great review! I really love this review of the summicrons. I have been on the fence about buying the DR but now you have convinced me, especially with those fantastic shots!! Great work, sir.

I don't have a lens cap for my Summitar lens on my Leica IIIb, so this could happen to me, if it wasn't for one thing. My camera came with the original leather case. It's old, worn and looks like it has taken a lot of punishment over the years, but it has kept the camera safe and in very good condition, so it still does.
I have both too, DR inherited from my late father. Only wish the DR wasn't so uncomfortable to use (Focus grip) and no half stops on the aperture ring. Much prefer using the V5 on my M3.
8:51 whaaaat I didnt know it could do that. i got my leica m3 from my grandpa and I always thought that addon thing is just so you can use a e.g. 90mm lens and have the same 90mm in your rangefinder.

Depends on the lens. On the 35 it let’s you use a 35 on the M3. (Which has 50mm finder). On the DR and Elmar it lets you focus closer than the standard 0.7m-1m
Summicron DR/Rigid is my favorite 50:) On the M10 it works perfectly from 0.45m to 10m (it just won't go completely to infinity). You just have to make sure you mount it between 3m 〜5m. Never tried it on the M240/M9 though.

I have the DR as well, works perfectly on my film cameras, but on M240, it goes to 10m only as well, I felt some resistance beyond 10m, and did not want to risk breaking the camera. The Goggle does not attach on Digital Leica either.

Stunning images from the crons of 50's and 90's. Well done, matt! I used to have an immaculate 50 summicron rigid (the optically identical twin to the DR) that produced delicious results on films and sensors. Unfortunately it managed to develop over the years some serious internal haze that reduced the image contrast significantly. No one seems to know for certain how the haze arises within these vintage summicrons or how it can be remedied effectively. Apparently the problem has plagued quite a number of type 2 crons to various degrees. I would check you dr regularly if i were you.Having had to sell mine at a great loss unfortunately, I don't think I will for use get another type 2 again. Been a happy user of the type 5 since...
Thanks Q, I appreciate you sharing that and sorry to hear the news. I believe where you live is very important in this situation. Countries with high humidity are higher risk for lenses. The UK probably less so. People use dry bags and dry cabinets in such countries as I hear.
@@tuisitala9068 Vintage glasses are more prone to haze than newer ones but no one can put a definitive finger on it as to why. Deterioration of the various organic components in the lens is probably the most likely culprit and how and where the glasses are stored and used played a part, too. Incidentally, I'd never wipe the front or back element of vintage Leica glass with anything including microfibre cloth unless the image quality is at stake because of the dust/dirt/smear etc. They take no prisoners in marking the glass.
I have specs for my 50mm DR summicron which gives an image through the viewfinder of my M4P which is out of alignment (higher) with the camera viewfinder image............... am I right in saying that this can be corrected by rotating the (prism)glass in the specs ?
I brought the V5 based on your video. I am wondering how this lens performs differently from the Rigid. The rigid was the first none USSR lens I brought and have been my standard for all other 50mm lenses after. Sharp from 2.0, but with less contrast then other lenses, but I used it in high contrast situations to my advantage wide open.
Comparing the DR to the 5th version on film at over 1 meter focus did you notice any difference in quality, resolution, contrast wide open between the lens? thanks. great video by the way. Matt, I have been told by an excellent camera repairman that the best rangefinder camera ever made was the Zeiss Contax 11a. He thinks the Contax11a is made better than the M3 especially internally which is all metal in the contax. He also thinks the rangefinder is better in the Contax. . In the near future i am going to buy a Contax 11a and have it cla'd and check it out. It's a beautiful camera. I shoot film only and currently shoot a M6 and a 111f . The M6 was purchased new in 1989. I have not shot an MP. I think the best leica made was the M4 which I have had 2. Have not tried the M5.
Hi John, sorry I missed this. I've not done side by side detailed testing between the 2 lenses but I generally seem to prefer the DR. I'm not saying it is better but it focuses closer so that is the main reason I use it.I have a Contax iiia. Nicely made yes but the M3 is far better in terms of useability. The RF is far better on the M3, no contest. I've not even put film in the Contax I was that unimpressed. The iia might be even nicer made but unless the RF patch was improved then I dont rate it sadly. Try before you buy! :) Great to hear you have a M6 and iiif. I like my iif and the M6 is a good investment it seems! :) I've not shot a M4 M5 or MP.
Matt, thanks for your reply. I have often wondered about whether the different versions of the 50 summicron are substantially different in quality? I have a 4th version and see no reason to even compare it to latter versions. Your comment on the Contax 111a is appreciated. The rangefinder is identicle to that found in 11a. Your portraits are great and thanks again for the reply. je
Hi Matt, firstly thanks so much for your reviews- love them. I have the new film MP and was just if the 50mm f2 DR will be fully functional ? Secondly would you recommend more of a character lens like the DR or the Voitlander 1.5 for film rather than than the 50mm summicron ? Cheers
Hi Bernard, thanks. Yes the DR will work fine. Is it the best choice.. it depends on what you like. Each 50 has pros and cons. If you visit MrLeica.com I list quite a few 50s and also the option to book a Zoom call where I help photographers buy the equipment that suits their needs.
Thanks, yes sorry here we say "naught" point nine.. I guess zero point nine would translate easier but we never really say that. Sorry it wasn't clear.
Matt, not sure if I got it all right. Did you refer to all digital Leicas when you said, that it won't work to full range in modern Leicas? Does that include the old M8?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you Matt. I can't remember myself. I'll watch the DR video again. Thaks for sheding a light on all Leica world. That's very informative, especially for me and all those who are new to the L world. Keep up the good world
Hello, I have the collapsible Summitar 50 f2 which pre-dates the Cron (see that video). They are excellent and the later Cron was sharper than my earlier lens. HCB and the like could use any lens to get great results so any vintage 50mm will give a similar look to what you like. See some of my many 50mm vids for more lens options.
Im looking for another 50mm for my M2. I currently use my Elmar f2.8, which makes a good job, but I am looking for a more modern and sharper look. So i have the option to choose between a Zeiss Planar or an used Summicron DR. I don’t know if a 50-60 Year has the same performance, than the new one. BTW your portraits are amazing!
Thanks Hans! I'm not sure you should by the DR for a modern look. It is amazing no question but you need higher contrast for a modern look. Check my Summarit 50 2.5 video as an option. I done use my Summicron v5 if you did decide you wanted that lens. I've not got around to selling it yet.

I have an M9 and an M9M: would the Rigid Summicron pose any problems with them or with later M models, or is the issue restricted to the DR version? Many thanks!

I’ve not tried a Rigid but I’m 90% sure it’s only the DR with limitations (I’ve got a lot of lenses (will review as get time!) and the DR is the only one not to work fully.

Hey Jake, sorry for late answer, trying to catch up! I don’t have it but I have the earlier Summitar. Makes for a smaller setup than a rigid although many seem to like the DR or the rigid the best so I’m not sure if that means they are optical that different.
Hi Matt, I just got my DR. And I am using it on my mp240, it's true that I can't go infinity. However if you go all the way to 8m, n use F8 to F16. You can still get infinity because the aperture bypass the depth of field. I'm kinda not sure if I should return it or keep it at the moment lol
Team DR!!!! 😁 Love your videos! Very informative reviews. Hope you can make more than one video per week after this daily series. 👍 The focus ring of my DR is a little stiff. Is that normal?
Hi John, welcome and thanks! It depends if stiff when not mounted to a camera. If not mounted mine moved freely. If mounted on the M240 and very stiff that's because it isn't really designed for that camera and can't move freely. See comment i've added above about which Leica cameras it works on.
@@john.galt. No.. only because of all the cameras and lenses I have none are R (I use mostly Leica M and LTM for 35mm (+ some Nikon and others) then MF and LF.
I don't believe it was mentioned in the video, but some GRIND away the protrusion of the DR close focus portion of the RF cam (It then fits on any camera). This extended cam is what obstructs and causes issues in many modern digitals (this protrusion encounters the internal baffles and photocell housing etc.). - Please DON"T grind/mod this collectable lens; there's no turning back when this is mod is performed. - I'm a Leica tech and I do get this request on occasion (easily done when the lens is all apart). BUT, I refuse on principle to provide this service/butchery...
Thanks Ricardo for sharing, yes i've now added a comment will information from the blog as what cameras it works on. M8/M9 no close focus, M240 only close focus (in brief). ..sadly!
There is no better 50mm lens on Earth than the LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2. The SUMMICRON is the world's reference for a 50mm photographic lens. The LEICA SUMMICRON has always been the world's standard for performance, and the newest version prove that this reputation is earned, not given. This is an extraordinary lens. Because every other LEICA SUMMICRON f/2 lens has been updated to ASPH (28mm in 2000, 35mm in 1996, 75mm in 2005 and 90mm in 1998), a LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2 ASPH seems like a logical update, however LEICA says this is unlikely simply because the performance can't be much improved, but the price would become about the same as the f/1.4, so why bother. There is no better 50mm lens, or any lens for that matter. This the review from Ken Rockwell that made my mind up to purchase one.
Hi Giles yes but not this week. I will need to do another batch of videos at a later date! You can see some ZM write ups on my blog, see the www.mrleica.com Leica tab lens list.
I once had both DR (with goggle) and summicron v5 and I sold the summicron v5 . On film photography , the DR would be the instant go to lens , especially for the black white film. I also use goggle from time to time. This is example of my photos using the goggle instagram.com/p/BpB7G_th4Sk/?igshid=12wfjl9bsj0en
Matt, the vintage 50 summicron DR is heavier than the non-DR version because the DR has a brass lens barrel versus the single range, which is aluminum, or aluminium for Brits.

Your portraits are great and thanks again for the reply. je

Nice review. Can one use the DR at close focus on a CL without the googles ? And is it safe ( sensor damage ) ?
Hi Carlos, thanks! Yes, you need to depress the little "button" on the top of the lens and you can. Nothing moves back into the camera so it is safe.
Voigtlander 1.5 is smaller lighter faster and also great. Both lenses have their fan club!
Can one successfully use the DR on a Sony Mirrorless Camera?
I've never used a Sony camera but I think yes via a Leica M adapter. Don't use the goggles, just press the button for close focus.
Great video, quick question for you, you keep saying NOT point nine meters? Can you please let make know what word you are saying? Thank you.
Thanks, yes sorry here we say "naught" point nine.. I guess zero point nine would translate easier but we never really say that. Sorry it wasn't clear.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you for the explanation :) appreciate your videos and your reply.
@@NoNameYetSoon thanks no problem!
Incase I want to use DR with my non-Leica camera. Would DR still work from 1m - infinity?
Thank you.
On full frame it should, on crop body it should too. There are some limitations on some of the digital Leica RF cameras.
..see it perform well in the recent 50mm shoot out vid!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks!!
Matt, not sure if I got it all right. Did you refer to all digital Leicas when you said, that it won't work to full range in modern Leicas? Does that include the old M8?
Hi Theo, please check the www.MrLeica.com review for the DR (search DR), as I cannot remember but I did document it there for M8, M9, M240.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you Matt. I can't remember myself. I'll watch the DR video again. Thaks for sheding a light on all Leica world. That's very informative, especially for me and all those who are new to the L world. Keep up the good world

I wonder how the collapsible Summicron 5cm 2.0 performs. I've heard HCB and photographers like Saul Leiter loved that lens. The one from the 50s.
Is the stiffer focus ring normal for the DR? Not sure if I should get it lubed.
I would say no to normal. You can look to get it relubed if gets too bad.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom well, are you able to move your ring with one finger? I can’t.

Any chance of a review of the Voigtländer 50/1.2 VM Nokton ASPH in the future?
Hi Peter, if I get chance to test one I will of course. I’ll see what I can try to arrange.

**Additional information from the www.MrLeica.com blog relating to anyone interested in the Summicron DR:
What camera will the Leica Summicron 50mm f2 DR lens work on and to what extent?
> Leica film camera (M2, M3, M4P, M6 Classic) - YES (Fully functional)
> Leica M8 - Partially (1m-4m range only). The close focus goggles will not fit the camera body due to the body shape.
> Leica M9 - Partially (1m-4m range only). The close focus goggles will not fit the camera body due to the body shape.
> Leica M240 - Partially (0.478m-1.2m only). Close focus goggles will fit but no infinity focus. To attach/ remove the DR lens from a Leica M240 camera ensure the lens is set to less than 1m*
> Leica CL - YES (Fully functional)
> Lumix GH5 - For completeness - YES (Fully functional)
I have got a m3 and some old summicron lenses as this from my grandfather, but the Fokus is not turning. How can I fix it ?
Hi, you can get the lens serviced and/or buy another lens to use on it.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom ok thx
Hi matt i have a question will the DR focus to infinity with the m9 ?
I can't remember from memory, please check my details mrleica.com DR post for full details
Thanks, Matt. Really interesting video and very helpful. A question: I follow what you say about the DR Summicron and how it can't be used at infinity on the M240. I have an M9 and an M9M: would the Rigid Summicron pose any problems with them or with later M models, or is the issue restricted to the DR version? Many thanks!
John McDade Hi John thanks. The DR will focus at infinity on the M8 and M9 but the goggles won’t fit due to the camera body shape. I’ve not tried a Rigid but I’m 90% sure it’s only the DR with limitations (I’ve got a lot of lenses (will review as get time!) and the DR is the only one not to work fully.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I tried DR on my M8, it can be mounted, but I can not turn the lens.
@@csuedn Yes the lens should work 1m-4m on M8 approx. (if set to 0.9m before mounting).
I got the 50's one but without the extra goggles. I'm still happy with it as I only paid 10 euro for it but still. That hurts.
10 Euros! ..for the lens bag or the lens!? :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The lens itself :) There was also a Hektor 135mm f4.5 but it was gone before i could buy it
What's your opinion of the old collapsible Summicron?
Hey Jake, sorry for late answer, trying to catch up! I don’t have it but I have the earlier Summitar. Makes for a smaller setup than a rigid although many seem to like the DR or the rigid the best so I’m not sure if that means they are optical that different.
R u saying if I want infinity on my Dr. I need to attach the goggle?
No the opposite, remove goggles for infinity.
What do you think abou summicron R 50mm?
Hi it’s said to be great but I’ve not shot with R glass so far. I like the smaller M system.
Well you have since this post and the pics are amazing!
Team DR!!!! 😁
Love your videos! Very informative reviews.
Hope you can make more than one video per week after this daily series. 👍
The focus ring of my DR is a little stiff.
Ok ok! Thanks Matt!
Have you ever considered to review Leica R Lenses or cameras?
@@john.galt. No.. only because of all the cameras and lenses I have none are R (I use mostly Leica M and LTM for 35mm (+ some Nikon and others) then MF and LF.
@@john.galt. ..if ever I get some R kit i'll be sure to share it! :)
Thanks for the info. Yes no grinding for me! I've had no issues with my DR. The only lens similar that wont mount on my SL is the Nikkor 50mm f1.2
i have the DR and i use it on my M3, but on my M8 it only focuses from 1m to 3m ;(
Thanks Ricardo for sharing, yes i've now added a comment will information from the blog as what cameras it works on. M8/M9 no close focus, M240 only close focus (in brief). ..sadly!
The Strongest 50mm Summicron In History Vs. The Strongest 50mm Summicron Of Today
Thanks, the APO is now king but I love these
There is no better 50mm lens on Earth than the LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2.
Thanks Alan, see my recent 50mm shoot out video, cron 50 R vs M :)
Any Zeiss ZM lenses ?
Hi Giles yes but not this week. I will need to do another batch of videos at a later date! You can see some ZM write ups on my blog, see the www.mrleica.com Leica tab lens list.

I once had both DR (with goggle) and summicron v5 and I sold the summicron v5 . On film photography , the DR would be the instant go to lens , especially for the black white film. I also use goggle from time to time.
This is example of my photos using the goggle

Thanks Premy, yes DR is a lovely lens (especially) ..nice film shot!

thanks!
Are you trying to flex your black and white photos? Because it’s not helpful at all
Hi Jhon, thanks. I just shared photos shot with the lens(es). Most people prefer the photography to the information but I try to keep it mostly info.
Matt, the vintage 50 summicron DR is heavier than the non-DR version because the DR has a brass lens barrel versus the single range, which is aluminum, or aluminium for Brits.
