- Are you looking in the wrong decade for the perfect lens? 👀 I think the Leica 50mm Summicron v2 Dual Range is one of the best lenses to buy in 2023 if you are looking for a Leica lens under $1000.

Dude, how am I *just* seeing your UA-cam channel now?! Keep it up ✌🏾
Thanks bro!! So encouraging as always 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I am 67 and have been shooting photography since the mid 70’s.
I now shoot film and digital.
I am always researching old unique lens that give some of that old film look on digital cameras.
I don’t believe you can get that from presets like those found in my exposure software. You can come close but using an old classic lens with the presets you can nail it.
I have purchased several lenses and now have a 50mm Pentax which I use for automotive antique cars on my Fujifilm camera.
After watching your video I am now on the hunt for the lens in your video.
Excellent video with all the relevant information needed.
Thank you so much!
It is the first video I have ever seen from you and I now subscribe to your channel.
I completely agree - to really nail the look from that time, you gotta shoot on the lenses of that time! Thank you so much for the feedback! Best of luck in your search 🙏🏻
I inherited a huge collection of vintage Leica bodies and lenses from my grandpa and uncle (both passed away), been using this lens and the Summicron 35mm f2 (my favorite because the 35 on a mirrorless would be like a 56mm with the crop factor) on my cheap Canon M50, using a custom picture profile that emulates film colors and toned down sharpness (in-camera settings), it looks like film images straight from JPGs, and I actually dig the imperfections and soft focus/edges, with this setup now I enjoy taking photos again because I never really liked the digital look nowadays, it's just so uninspiring... I think if you use a Fujifilm camera with their color recipes you can probably get even closer to that film look with this lens. Good luck with your hunt!
Well if you do not find them you can create them; it is not because you won't that it is impossible.
Great video. I agree that the design of Leica is half the joy of using them.
The “Leica Look” is all in the lenses.
So that’s all I use now. I chuckle when I see people spend a ton of money on Leica digital bodies, and then shoot cheap Chinese lens knockoffs. 🤣
I would rather buy an older digital M than resort to buying the crappy Chinese lenses, if I had a tight budget. In any case, the CV lenses are not really that much more, and are far better built.
Beautiful photos 🤩 i love how you used the lens for the video as well and we get to see that glorious bokeh
Thank you so much! I figured what a simple way to show the rendering of the lens
No doubt this DR and Rigid are excellent 50 mm vintage lenses. As for 35 mm, the vintage Summaron f/2.8 lens also has good value. Those Leica lenses were so solidly built with unmatched quality and performance back then.
Yes I totally agree! I haven’t tried the 35 Summaron yet but have been starting to hear that it’s amazing. Might have to try it out…
@@_parkphoto Yes, especially if you can find a decent one under $1000. There are times I prefer this Summaron on my M9 over the other more expensive gear. Note that it was built much like the overpriced Summicron 8 Element lens. Sweet on any silver M 📷
Summaron a surprise! Way prefer look to my long departed 35mm Summicron!
Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed well explained video. I think you answered any questions I may have had regarding this lens. I am just recently exploring the possibility of getting a vintage Leica lens to pair with my Fujifilm XT1 and XT2. We'll see...🙂
great information about this lens. thank you.!! the character is amazing, that background on your video is beautiful.!
Thank you so much!
Great video. The Rigid is one of my favorite Leica lenses of all time and it has nothing to do with the reasonable price.
Yeah I totally agree! I don’t really see myself selling this lens, it’s just so good and so classic.
It’s a really special lens. I bought an m11 just to use this lens digitally. It has a kind of texture in the shadows when you stop it down also. I actually use it most often at f8 or f11. It looks like I’ll have to buy another copy before they get super hyped.
What I learned about the "Leica Look", Leica develops lenses with great detail whilst avoiding the aggressive sharpness found in others...!
Ruining nice copies of the DR should be a criminal offense. :(
We all have our opinions ;) I knew this decision would ruffle some feathers but between being on a budget and really loving the character of this lens it made sense for me!
You are a fantastic photographer and I'm glad that you took some "documentary style" photos. Most photographers and reviewers only do landscapes and gas stations. The 50mm DR Summicron is one of the two lenses, I own, that I will never sell. The other one is the Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm 1.5 II. I use the Summicron on my M3 and it's a match made in heaven. Currently, the lens is at Leica HQ, because the focus ring doesn't work properly but the image quality is superb. If you use film like Tri-X or the new Fomapan Ortho 400 and develop it with Rodinal, you get some magic.
Wow thank you so much for those kind words. I use the lens for everything, so my review is all about how I’ve shot it, rather than shooting for a review. How do you like the Biotar? I’ve been so curious about those lenses for a long time.
@@_parkphoto Feel free to get in touch with Meyer Optik Goerlitz, they can probably provide you the lens for a limited time. There are only two or three great reviews on UA-cam, so they could need some attention. It‘s like a Helios 44-2 on steroids, however I prefer it on a SLR camera.
I have this lens, shoot it a loot on the m3 with googles or digital, but I didn’t cut it of and it works perfectly
The classic Leica glass is all I shoot. Lens character all the way bro! Great video and perspective.
For sure! It really is just the best. Thanks friend!
I own this lens with the goggles. I use it on my m3. I hope everyone is aware please do not try and mount it on your digital Leica’s. You can break your focusing mechanism. I have a different 50mm for my m10. But this Leica lens is beautiful. And the close focusing goggles are awesome for portraits. Highly recommend.
Yes 100% be careful on the digital M’s! That’s great to hear you use the goggles on the M3.
You can use with new m11 now !
@@eddiehoang9718 yes this is true! That would be the caveat to my caution haha
Even if I only have Leica lenses on my M cameras, I must admit that the Voigtlander 50mm f2.0 APO-Lanthar aspherical could be a better choice if you're looking for a budget 50mm M mount lens. And the best of both worlds (fast and sharp) is without any doubt a used 50 summilux. Peter Karbe favorite lens. And mine too.
Great video presentation.
Love that you used the lens to shoot your talk.
Thank you very much!
I subscribed your channel and I pray you will soon to a heights of 1 million ❤️lots of love my brother
Thank you brother!! 🙏🏻 I pray you’re doing well!
I believe you don’t have to modify this lens if you’re using an SL or SL2
Good stuff. I like your bokeh interaction. The first time I saw that, which is weird.
Thank you! Yeah I figured I might as well film with the lens, then I’m literally in the image and can point stuff out super easily. Thanks for watching! 😊
going to buy one tomorrow. excited
Very very good video. Educational.
I’m so glad thank you!
Wow. I have m10. How did you shave the rear lens without damage the glass ?
Do you recommend to buy it now ? debating
Yeah it’s fantastic!! I would recommend sending it to DAG Camera. He did it for me and it wasn’t all that expensive, took a few weeks
Video @ 1:07 "the best lens you can buy that is a Leica lens" - Yes, and in the 1960's, the two main photography magazines held this lens as the benchmark for sharpness. Modern and Popular Photography both claimed the Dual Range as the BEST lens they had ever tested. - BTW, NEVER alter the rear cam of this iconic lens WHY alter the collectability of a classic ? - Many early 60's Jaguar XK-E owners who altered their V12 Classic cars by installing a Chevy V8 engine, REGRETTED IT ! - Better to acquire a camera that easily accepts this collectable lens (Mirrorless digital or film).
I got a collapsible version however it has a lot of scratches and potentially fungus. I’ve yet to test it yet because I don’t own anything with an M mount yet haha. I might try adapting it to Sony to give it a shot
I’d love to hear how it does once you try it! I’ve heard the older collapsable versions have softer lens coatings that get scratched very easily so I’m not surprised to hear that.
My Collapsible Summicron pristine! Always a filter. Very easy to flare! Use shade and pick your battles!
Awesome video man 🙌
thanks friend!!
Leica was buying their glass from Minolta at the time. I'm a fan of the 50mm f1.7 Rokkor, over the look of this. It's the bokeh (too busy for me).
Are you sure? Back in the 50s and 60s?
@@_parkphotothe partnership with Minolta didn't start until June of 1972 and it was on the Leica R side. So four plus years after both Rigid and Dual Range lenses.
Leica collaborated with Minolta for the CL / CLE and some SLR designs.
Other than that absolutely not, I don't know where you got your information from.
great video, great photos. subbed. only thing that wasn't clear is if you need to butcher it just to use on an M10 (seem to remember there was an issue with some old lenses touching sensors), or whether that's just for using the close focus?
Same thoughts here. Does it need to be modded to work on the digital M’s, or is the mod only to allow close focus?
So it needs to be modded in order to safely attach it to any digital M besides the M11. Otherwise the extra length on the focusing helicoid will wreck either the light meter or rangefinder focusing inside the camera. It’s a clearance issue of sorts. But, I believe it’s because the M11 has a sensor-based light meter only, it doesn’t have that issue and has clearance for the extra length on that helicoid.
@@_parkphoto thanks for the info!
@@craig_cunha you bet!
They can get internal haze! Test 1st..
Very true! So glad my copy had no haze.
"internal haze" - Yes, folks don't realize that even Rolex watches, after 30 plus years REQUIRE a C L A (cleaned, lubed & adjusted). So why can't they also realize that something that exposes optics to nearby lubricant, will eventually show the out-gas contamination. Which by the way, WILL eventually turn acidic (coatings are then permanently damaged)
Liked, and subscribed!
I don't prefer that design, but i added it to my wishlist hahaha
You more of a fan of the later black barrels perhaps?
@@_parkphoto Yes...
I get it! There’s something special about that design as well.
Nice video! Which Leica are you using for you commercial work with the lens?
Based on the images I showed in the video, most of the digitals were on the M 240, the film shots were the M3, and a few of the digitals were the Fuji X-Pro3.
Thanks for great review, do you know if DR can fit Nikon Zf ? I have the DR but not sure if it's compatible or will it ruin the Nikon ZF sensor. Thanks for your time.
Yes it will have no problem on the Zf because you’ll be using a Leica M to Nikon Z adapter
The R serie lens is a better buy.
It definitely is less expensive, I just picked one up, but the lens characteristics are different!
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks the OOF characteristic looks a bit messy/chaotic on this lens. The bokeh isn't pleasing at all and quite frankly takes my attention away from the subject(s).
No Austin! I do not sleep on top of my Leica-or for that matter even my Kodak lenses. That's a heck of a way to wake up in the morning after a great nightmare & find out a real nightmare has happened: Little shards of glass with bent brass only to realize u now have the material for a new Kaleidoscope, period. Bye,Bye Camera Lens! How dumb can u be, to even entertain such thoughts. The Wetzlar Leica Gnomes will haunt u the rest of your life for such a dastardly deed! 😎😎
I see you visited the cow dung eaters. How was that?
So sezzzzzzzzzy 🔥
Why would anyone sleep on a lens ?
You want to know something funny? Before I clicked Play, I suspected that you were going to mention the DR Summicron!
Amazing!
Video like this just rise the prices of good old equipment and make harm to all of us who realy buy and use it. Only merchants benefit from such reviews.
This is really dumb, why not just simply wait until you can get another lens before butchering the lens (even a vintage lens) [especially when you had the money to buy a M240 and SL2S and Fuji cameras; the whole thing does not make any sense]]. The lens does not compare with the latest Leica lenses in any way. There is so little knowledge of the Leica or Voigtlander, even TTartisan or 7artisans outside of this specific lens. By the way Austin videos might be ok, but a lot of the photographs shot have a greenish cast. Why make any video at this beginner's stage??
