    Matt, have this lens for my Leica M3 and love how it performs. It gives a sharp picture with moderate contrast. The advantage of this lens is the collapsible feature, which makes it easier to carry in your backpack or coat pocket. Whenever I use this lens, it reminds me of old world craftsmanship and the quality in older gear. I want to shoot Kodak E100 color reversal whenever I travel, after finding a lab in my state that will do the E6 process and mount the slides in the cardboard for slide projectors. I must be trapped in a time warp to do this, but also feel the vintage gear is what makes photography fun-there isn’t a microchip to do the work. Well done video here.❤❤😊😊

    It is a wonderful little lens. It was the first lens I got for my Leica M3. 400€, in excellent optical and mechanical shape with minor cosmetic wear. It had even been CLA'd recently, and of course came with the paperwork to prove it. I love it.

    I have this lens on my M2. A lovely little lens. One thing to beware of if you want to use this on your mirrorless digital camera is that the sensor on these cameras is often much further forward than on a film camera. If you intend to collapse the lens make sure it isn't going to hit the sensor. Personnally I don't use this on mirrorless just in case. Accidents can happen - especially to me.

      When the M5 came out with it's monstrous-sized body, a friend of mine borrowed my Elmar 50 to test against his Summicron. He solved the collapsible concern with a quick wrap of gaffer tape so the lens would not collapse into the integrated TTL metering stick (not duct tape, that leaves adhesive behind). His solution worked well for the few days he shot both lenses.

      Hi!! i have watched this video separates times and forums forever… but still wanna raise this question ( im the type of person that after closes the door with keys… try to “bang” the door with my shoulders before actually leaving…) : Is it safe so collapse the elmar 50 2.8 in a digital M ( specially the m240 in my case) . Some people A) says it should not be fully retracted. Other people B) It should be extended to mount but then is safe to retract and normal use. Other people c) same as b, but if we try to shot with the lens retracted by error , it will hit and damage the shutter…. can anyone clarify this? ( without breaking his own camera…). I would really like to add this lens to my collection to use it with m3 and m240 . Thanks a lot to all in advance.

    I brought my Elmar 50mm for 295€ before the Leica M8 came out. At 2.8 on Agfa Chrome professional it is extremely sharp with the hood.
    I brought the macro extension, since you can it use with the Summicron collapsible as well.

  • @Nerdzombiedisco
    @Nerdzombiedisco 2 роки тому +1

    I personally prefer 21-35mm on my Ms. But this 50 is enjoyable with it's compactness, fidget factor and short focus throw. Looks the part of my black paint MP and has seen more use with the current state of the world, when I can't get close to street scenes and people. The price for a Leica lens was right too. Sharp enough + unique rendering. The only knock I give it is the annoying aperture ring that is fiddly on my copy. The infinity lock and collapsing/extending the lens is so very fidget satisfying. Cheers!

    Nice review, as you no doubt know the SOOKY-M (SOMKY) works with the SM 50/2.8 Elmar as well as the first collapsible Summicron (either SM or M lens), but only on an M body. You also can use the removable lens head from the first rigid 50 Summicron (same optics as DR, but better looking) in a SOOKY-M/SOMKY with the UOORF/16508 lens adapter.
    For SM bodies (II thru IIIf) you can use the close focus adapter SOOKY (no M) with any lens (collapsible Elmar, collapsible Summicron or rigid Summicron with UOORF) that work with the SOMKY on M bodies. . There are earlier SM close focusing devices, the NOOKY for the collapsible SM Elmar 3.5 and the NOOKY-HESUM for the collapsibe 5 cm Hektor, Summar and ( I believe) Summitar. These work on models II thru IIIf, but not on IIIg or I bodies.

      Thanks Adam, i'm going to do a part 2 video today if I get chance to cover some of the confusion i've caused with the adapter. But some of what you just wrote is new to me too.. LTM ("SM") lens on SOOKY.. interesting! I will try it (not to shoot but the mounting).
      SM..ah it just clicked.. screw mount! I don't think i've seen it written as SM before.
      Other adapters - yes I use a Nooky Hesum (I had it on the table in the last video but forgot to show it). I will share in follow up video. Yes I used it with Elmar 2.5, Elmar 3.5, Summitar and even the Elmar 3.5 clone though it shouldn't mount in theory I think but I got it to go it and focused a shot successfully on a Zorki C.
      I don't have the collapsible Summicron, Hektor or Summar. I skipped the early SM lenses as too soft to use for me. I use a iiia, iiig and just picked up a iif so that will be coming to the channel once i've shot a test roll :)

    Hey Matt, just recently purchased a Leica IIIF and a 50 and 35 Elmar F3.5. I have searched the internet where the info can be really good or bad info. My question is when attaching the screw mount lens with an adaptor to a modern M camera do you get both the frame lines and range finder focus or just the frame lines? I have seen wildly varying info on this on Reddit.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 місяці тому

      Hi! When you use LTM-M adapter the adapter triggers the framelines. Buy the correct adapters 50/75 for the 50, 35/135 for the 35. The RF patch is always there.

      The reason I asked is the reason why the M8 had a small sensor. The distance from the back of the M lenses is smaller than SLR lenses. The light rays strike the edges of the sensor at a sharper angle. The M9 full frame sensors had micrenses to deal with this, but that was 12 years ago. Presumably the newer sensors are OK.
      Some of these latest sensors generate huge files which are hard to transfer and process.

      The 5 cm/3.5 Elmar was Leitz's first interchangeable lens, followed shortly by 3.5cm/3.5 Elmar and 9cm/4 Elmar. Elmar referred to the optical arrangement rather than the speed. Although Leitz claimed they were developed independently (and the aperture placement differs) they all strongly resemble the Zeiss Tessar. The first 5 cm lens on the original Leica was an Elmax (different optical design), but as soon as Zeiss' original patent expired for the Tessar, the Elmar appeared on the Leica I. No doubt they were afraid of patent infringement suits.

    I am so tired of eBay trolls... I watched this review and recalled the great fun I had with my original 50 Elmar.... so... went on eBay and purchased an 'execellent+++++'. It arrived and went on to my Leica immediately for verification test shots... worthless... the focus was so far off.. and yes, I did extend and lock it... This has happened so many times this past year with other supposedly good condition merchandise, I am thoroughly disgusted with the sellers. Of course, I will eventually get a refund, but what a hassle, and it makes any honest sellers come under suspicion......
