I'm not in the Air Force any longer. I've been a city police officer for many years. We have a random drug test. For 30 years, they've never gotten to me. I don't smoke or drink and have never done drugs. After I wore a marijuana-tee shirt to an off-duty, volleyball game, they tested me twice in several months. My nephew is a lieutenant in Internal Affairs. He whispered to me that they get to who they want. Someone snitched on me because of that shirt. I intend on wearing it again soon.
I was in the Air Force from 94 to 01. When we were called in for drug testing, we were told to report to our squadron orderly room. Upon arrival we sign the drug test form with the time stamped. We went to the medical annex immediately to report. They issued a cup with the label we had to affix the initial on. During the observation there was an NCO with minimum rank of SSGT who observed the urine existing our body. Once we submit the specimen we report back to duty. As for failures of drug test… In the beginning, people would get out processed for discharge normally it was a general to a bad conduct discharge. During the time of out processing, the GI normally would be assigned to Bay Orderly (dorm room janitor). In the year 2000, I noticed Airmen were getting 8 months confinement w BCD for failure of drug test. This was a mandate from the LG commander due to many drug test failures in the past. We were informed of this during one of our commander’s call. Disclaimer there may be inconsistencies with my account of events due to the years I served in the Air Force. I’m sure much has changed since I’ve been separated.
What if you actually want out of the military because it sucks? I PURPOSELY failed a UA for marijuana. I got out with a general discharge. From start to finish it was a 62 day process.

I saw a guy get separated today for weed…when I went to the newcomers airman brief she said “the moment you test positive for weed we start your discharge paper”
Per the AFI, a positive drug test will trigger an administrative discharge notification. There are ways to try to combat it, but the person will need to work with their Area Defense Counsel for their best options moving forward.
Does the Air Force illicit positives get reported to National Instant Background Check System? I work in a military substance abuse program for the army and we send to the Air Force Lab at Lackland and they report our illicit positives to that system.

MEPS is the medical exam you go through prior to enlisting. Once you pass MEPS, you’ll swear in (typically same day, on site), and then you’ll officially be in. MEPS is kind of like the last barrier to joining before you get shipped off to basic training.

I was a 1st Lt in the army, the XO of a basic combat training company and one of my drill sgt's came up positive for THC. It was handled at the battalion level, and he was up till that point an exemplary NCO. I believe he was an E-5 Drill Sgt. the battalion commander brought in the company commander, myself, the 1st Sgt and SGM and asked us to provide any input on the case. I basically said there must be consequences, but I believe he should be retained and the company commander and 1sgt sgt said basically the same thing. The Battalion SGM was adamant that he must go, be discharged. The battalion commander after listening to use all decided on a field grade article 15 administrative punishment, he was busted to E4 and reassigned to a line unit, fired as a drill sgt. but I heard a couple years later that he followed all recommendations and eventually got his stripe back and did well. But this was a long time ago when drug testing was relatively new in the military. This was in 1988. I am sure today the military is much stricter on drug use.
It's never worth it to get into that type of trouble, I've heard a story of a good soldier testing positive, but luckily the commander probably let him stay in, it they like you enough they probably wont punish you that much, but still not worth it regardless.
@Punisher1830 no. The guy I referred to who spent time in the brig? He just vanished one day, then came back after some time and then he was kicked out. I think it's BS. As long as you can perform your job AND you don't come to work high (or drunk), who gives a shit?

Any and ALL illegal controlled substances to include illegally consumed prescription medicine including alcohol should be 100 percent off limits while on active US military duty. I think the US military should be so strict on drugs that it would make DARE program a JV drug awareness organization.

Cut off for THC is 60 Nano grams per milliliter. Typically takes 2 weeks to 30 days depending on how often and how much you consume. Cocaine cut off is 3000 ng/ml hence typically 72 hours after last consumption. Military will follow up with gas chromatography and spectroscopy to confirm results.
