Josef Rauschecker, PhD, has 35 years of experience in systems and cognitive neuroscience, and has focused much of his research in the past decade on tinnitus. Being a tinnitus sufferer himself, he became intrigued by the influence of sleep on tinnitus severity, and the possible role that serotonin could play in this mechanism.

Dr. Rauscheker has identified the profound importance of proper deep and restorative sleep to help manage your tinnitus intensity. As a 9 year tinnitus sufferer myself I would acknowledge the effect of good sleep on managing your tinnitus. I believe there is also a relationship with poor sleep and raised cortisol that negatively effects ones tinnitus. Stress is also almost guaranteed to raise the tinnitus volume. I would also say there is an effect from insulin surges in the body. Avoidance of most stimulants like sugar, caffeine and alcohol must be carefully watched. It's a huge topic and more study needs to be along the lines of healing the brain. Tinnitus is a siren going off inside your head telling you that there is something very wrong with your health. Its no different than pain which is also telling you loud and clear that something is wrong and needs your attention.

I saw his ted talk from a few years ago and got my hopes up. So i searched for his name and this came up where he is talking about sleep... Im so sad now, i really thought he was working on something to help cure tinnitus. Sleep?? Ive had this for 36years and its always there.. Through stress and happy times, no change! Untill 2months ago where it got way worse and now i struggle sleeping. Sleep has never helped my tinnitus. I used to sleep very well at night. But maybe it helps for the small subset who have intermitten T. I dont even feel sorry for intermittent sufferers, they get to escape from this torture. I would kill for intermittent T, to know its temporary and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Research should focus on chronic sufferers who never gets a break. Fix us first, then focus on intermitten sufferers. Alot of us never ever get to escape, we live in hell every waking moment (and some are in hell while they sleep to, iknow i have nightmares because of this)

I took Pristiq an SNRI 50mg for 3 weeks. During the 2nd or 3rd week I noticed the ringing. I stopped taking the drug immediately, hoping the tinnitus would go away. I have always been depressed, with some anxiety. It has been 2 YEARS of constant severe tinnitus since taking the SNRI. I know that the SNRI caused the tinnitus, and I am so much more depressed than before ever taking it. I wish I never took the antidepressant. I am very very angry with my doctor, and the possibility of tinnitus being permanent, when I ALREADY SUFFERED DEPRESSION.
I have severe long lasting depression, and I run long distance to help it, and now that i have tinnitus I noticed that after a very intense long run my tinnitus is the quietest it becomes. I should have stuck to running to cure my depression instead of taking an antidepressant that gave me severe permanent tinnitus. GOD i hope that this tinnitus can go away completely, because my depression will make me take my life struggling EVERYDAY with tinnitus.

Battling depression on and off for years. Taking anti depressant for the last 4 years. Last year, i got covid and affected my left ear- vertigo and tinnitus, hyperacusis ....tough,tough process to overcome. Its like myvwhole world came tumbling down. Helplessness is the word. You need to accept it by meditating on gods word. Humanly impossible to overcome.

Thank you Josef. I have Tinnitus and I appreciate new info. I am currently adapting thru relaxation, healthy food and reminding myself that this can pass with patience, and focusing on good stuff such as being outdoors in nature. My worst time of day is upon waking. Getting funding is challenging as I’m sure it’s about how much money pharma can take in after finding perhaps a simple cure. If the illness is netting more in ambiguity than in a cure, to be sure no cure will be discovered. Sending you sincere appreciation. Julie Pellegrino

I am disappointed that he did not mention that SSRI's and other drugs can sometimes actually cause permanent tinnitus - This is been reported by medical science. I have had tinnitus 24/7 for 21 years. I just live with it . It IS much worse under stress or lacking sleep. I did NOT get mine from loud music. I had my hearing checked about 8 years ago and test said no hearing loss... so I guess I Am one of the the rare cases he speaks of in his ted talk

Yes it’s true that sleep helps. However, it’s complicated because serotonin can also aggravate pain perception. I have severe constant tinnitus with severe hyperacusis pain, and to me they are two sides of one syndrome. It’s like listening to someone screaming in my ear at 120 dB day and night. I have very low tolerance for serotonin. It causes restlessness and nightmares. There’s also a chemical called Substance P that could be involved in the transmission of pain signals, but the problem is probably way more complicated than this as the whole system could be off balance. Below all of this, it’s quite likely to be an immune system disorder.

I was working with a doctor to try and lower my serotonin because he said it’s why I’m having migraines. I was taking l-tyrosine to lower it. I also take sumatriptan when I have a migraine. During the second month of taking tyrosine (and other nutritional supplements) I developed tinnitus. 🤔🙁

    • @deanjallen6449
      @deanjallen6449 2 роки тому

In my case I have found that a lack of serotonin causes migraines and thats why amitriptyline gets rid of my migraines. It also seems to help with my sleep apnea. I found that taking sumatriptan, even the 6 tablets at the onset of migraine makes little difference. I think the serotonin helps to restrict the larger blood vessels in the brain and stop low pressure in other areas starting the migraine, only my guess.

Having had continuous tinnitus for over 50 years I find it interesting that AI is not being used to establish any common "mechanisms" that alleviate the condition. For goodness sake, there are millions of people with tinnitus and surely it would be possible to gather a database of tinnitus sufferers' experiences (getting treatments that have been effective/ineffective etc) and deducing any patterns.
It always appears that the sample sizes to test hypotheses are tiny (say,

I have mild tinnitus that began when I was about 42. It most likely is the result of loud music from my youth.
I work in a quite office environment and it got worse when I did some home remodeling and used a noisy shop vac. I didn't think to use ear protection because I didn't know enough about tinnitus and didn't connect the two.
I have hearing loss now and wear hearing aids when watching tv, and in some poor quality sound situations. I find at times it is now interfering with my perception of voices.
I do think that Sucralose contributed. I normally avoid all artificial sweeteners because I have distinctive weird reactions to aspartame, but there was a period when I drank a moderate amount of Sucralose and it may have contributed.
Has anyone with mild tinnitus found that a anti-depressant helped?

Try sound machine or you tube designated type videos for tinnitus. avoid all stimulants at night, no online viewing as the blue screen suppresses melatonin, and use additional sound source to distract the brain from the tinnitus. Often a regular fan helps myself while others prefer waterfalls or crickets sounds played. Keep a regular sleep pattern. Try some herbal type supplements can also aid in relaxation.

I stopped it immediately, the right ear tinnitus has reduced in severity and some hearing has returned. Furthermore, my vertigo which often goes hand in hand with tinnitus has also improved significantly. I have switched to a supplement L-argenine 1000mg x2 per day to control my blood pressure and it is effectively controlling it. Very interesting. I get tinnitus which also gets worse with poor sleep. I never really noticed this until I started to take large doses of amitriptyline, this maybe a coincidence though. I also get OSA and CSA. I believe the CSA is because of low serotonin levels and amitriptyline also removes my migraines as well as lets me sleep for longer. Best to not be on this for too long though due to the many side effects. I also get low testosterone which may also play a part in low serotonin. This is probably due to lack of good quality sleep.
