FIrst and foremost I like that you did this video in this weather. I love that you made it clear you didn't camp in that weather. Adapting to the circumstances is important. And I love that you show real irish weather. I'm not a hiker due to physical limitations, but I am a monetary supporter of my local mountain rescue. There are many people, from the cities as well as abroad that tend to terribly underestimate at least the Wicklows, but i guess same goes for all mountain ranges in Ireland. The weather is what gets you in Ireland. Videography, storytelling and composition where excellent and a joy to watch, but you keeping it real was the outstanding feature of this video for me. Have a good one!
Thanks I’m also always thinking about what option will be most safe, enjoyable and also what will let me make a worthwhile video. It was a combination of things that made me rethink the camp. The weather was a big factor, but that combined with loosing light and the potential for a risky descent in the dark carrying a lot of weight didn’t seem the best option. Yeah casual hikers can really underestimate the weather here. I’ve seen people in tee shirts and shorts looking very miserable after heading out in sunshine and getting hit by wind and rain that came from nowhere. I once went hiking with a guy who is a proper alpinist and he couldn’t get over how windy it was here at such low altitudes
I love how you make fun with your locked off "walking away" shots, where instead of just taking the shot and we don't see you come back, you hide in ferns or gesture at us like we're not keeping up! Also great turnaround time! 6th November adventure to a 10th November vid!
Sometimes I’m feeling a bit silly and can’t be bothered taking the process entirely seriously 🤪 This was actually a fairly straightforward edit as I didn’t have a script. Took about 10hours to edit.
I'm unsure I could handle carrying a 20kg backpack up a mountain, but your enthusiasm is contagious! The video was really well-made, and I loved the humor, Sir
Thank you for another astonishing video on incredible conditions! I just can't imagine what were the working conditions for the men at the golgen ages of the quarry... Try not to take too much risks only for filming purpposes even the results are always fantastics! Love from France
Thanks 🙂 would have been miserable up there in bad weather. Sometimes if it’s a really cold winter, the water in the quarry freezes and forms massive icicles. Turns it into a wonderland
Northern Ireland hasn't recorded any full hours of sunshine since the start of November. 😂 I appreciate you showing these places off no matter the weather though! I really enjoy going for a trudge on what others would call a miserable day, I find it full of more adventure!
@martymartin2894 Yeah, all that carbon being pumped into the atmosphere is awful. Would be great if we could continue pushing for cleaner energy sources!
i've been watching quite a few camping youtubers lately and came across your channel a few days ago and you've quickly become my personal favourite. The combination of great camera work, wonderful drone shots, your seemingly endless pool of interesting facts and tidbits ON TOP of showing great camping content and having a sparkling personality makes you an absolute joy to watch. I hope you can keep doing what you're doing and being a breathe of fresh air on this platform!
I live near a volcano so our rivers are filled with amazing rocks, and every summer when we go canoeing, I will collect a small bag and add them to the artificial creek at my house.
the rocks and minerals magazine was called Treasures Of The Earth and I collected them too; you gor a gem stone and a regular rock sample with every issue and could get display cases for them. I have absolutely no idea what happened to mine but used to love reading it as a kid!
Very enjoyable. I very much appreciate the humor! Our weather on the US west coast is very similar... very unappetizing to be out, but you have to do it anyways to keep your sanity.
Winter may be dark and gloomy where you are but where I live, we get about 2m of snowfall per year and everything is frozen solid for months. Here, official campgrounds are closed until May, lots of bike paths will be unplowed and covered in snow until April, some hiking trails will close until everything is frozen then close again during thaw, etc. So I'm kind of envious that you can still somewhat go outside, and will be watching you in miserable weather from my frozen wasteland, while we both wait for spring.
@StephenJReid Stephen - any thoughts to weigh in on the planned cable car from the Donard car park to Thomas Quarry on the Newcastle side? Seems like a massive waste of resources that could be better spent on maintaining the walking paths, access and litter no?
I still can’t decide how I fully feel about it. I don’t like to respond to things like that without fully researching all angles. Currently I can see both positives and negatives. Often with these kinds of projects it’s not as simple as having the possibility of the money being used elsewhere. Quite often the funding is only for single big projects of certain types. I’d love to see parking, trails and facilities improved around the Mournes. Ott carpark immediately comes to mind and the trail across from it. Also think Newcastle really does need some kind of outdoors hub in Donard Park. Or funding for rangers during the summer months
A Fox done the same with me on a solo up Bearnagh one night. I Made burgers and the wee rascal licked the pan clean. 😂. Great video Stephen . Getting close to 100k subs mate 🎉

Really glad you enjoyed our pancakes. We take pride in using local fresh eggs, buttermilk and flour and of course all handmade. Thanks again #thehomebakeryrathfriland #fresh bread and treats made daily.

I dont know how you remember it all. glad you like the Vern 1. Out of interest Stephen, what did you base your wind ratings of 30 to 35mph on? ATB, still laighing at Synonym, as I share the same affliction!
Another great video Steven, have been loving your content as of late. Have you thought about a video exploring Thomas Quarry and the Proposed Mourne Gateway Project?
Yeah I’ve thought about it. Still making my mind up on what I feel about it. It’s a topic that requires a decent amount of reading and research to say anything meaningful about and I’ve already a couple of research heavy videos in the works
@@StephenJReid Its a very divisive project for sure. Certainly if you attended the public consultations you would think there is little local support for it. It would be great to get your usual in depth and honest look at the subject.
Great video Stephen as always😁. Really enjoying the history aspect in your content, it's like a different world up there😁. I love the look of the Vern 1. What put me off buying one was simply down to the weight, just a little too heavy at my age😂 so went with the Terra Nova Southern Cross 1, a full kg lighter but obviously not the same space 😁
Incredible how you get a produced and ready to view video done and out in under 4 days! There is so much work involved in your work most will never understand. Yeah that’s a long drag up from the Bloody Bridge but yeah love that trail up the old BOGIE route. Question: where do you purchase one of those launch-control tents? Amazon with their fire-regs though will refuse carriage due to the said risk.
3hours driving, 10hours out hiking and filming and about a 12hour edit. Editing was fairly straightforward for this one, I didn’t overshoot too much. Sometimes edits can be 40hours. Only places stocking those tents are firework shops
Hi Stephen,, a very polished and exceptionally well put together video, always informative but extremely hilarious at the same time, my partners brother has a film production company in London dealing with the likes of netflix and universal and she says that you have it Stephen, well done,,,
The rather large fragments (3 chunks) from St Patrick's cross, on display down in Downpatrick Cathedral originated from Bloody Bridge area. Bit of trivia I learned on my visit there a few weeks ago. Aye, that looks like fairly typical Mourne Mountain weather for this time of the year. I'm hoping for better conditions down Cader Idris in a few days, hunting for what remains of another wartime crash, but if the weather is anything like the conditions you have just experienced, I shall probably do a brewery tour instead. I think the rain and mist added to the atmosphere of the place. Very ghostly especially with the plane crash story. So many industries disappeared, men lost their jobs, and communities faded away. The value of your work in filming these places is to remind us of the past we lost and that the future is uncertain. Well done Stephen. 👏
been bouldering up the bloody bridge river (name comes from a massacre in one of irelands many rebellions). never been able to find out what it was called before the massacre though, seems to be lost in the mists of time. Or maybe they were just waiting for something heinous to happen before naming it? hadnt realised there was so much of interest further up - defo worth a walk in better weather. not sure you picked the right boots for that walk - did you not feel every rock you stood on? dont think your audition for the "im a celebrity Jungle Shower scene" will get you a spot on the next series, soz.
Much prefer those boots to normal hiking boots. I’d never go back except for maybe snow and ice conditions. Made a video about them: ua-cam.com/video/62jbnhoQmAY/v-deo.htmlsi=aGVrzzTBm1KG-3Np It’s amazing how much you can easily miss in somewhere you are familiar with. That was a great "almost camp". Awful weather tho. I've seen a lot of that granite in Irish cemeteries, it polishes up beautifully. Like the tent, 20kg is my norm and it sucks 👍
thanks! I always forget that I really need to train for the extra weight in winter. I now have a kettlebell in a rucksack and am walking around the house with it
Do you know why the train stopped operating? We have the same back home in mountains and is fairly popular to get up….as well I’m supervised they left almost whole structure behind 😮
I think demand faded as other cheaper products came into the market. I believe this quarry stopped operating in the 60s or 70s. Quite common to find places looking like they had been abandoned. Not much use in the equipment elsewhere and would be expensive to move
@ ah ok I get it now…the train was for the quarry 🤦♀️ I don’t know how I did not connect the two by watching the video as well 🤷♀️😂 I think I’m overworked haha we have one which was built as an attraction for tourists and hikers…it makes sense now..😅

worthless
Amazing what you can do with green screen. Sorry Steve another great video.
Green screen, CGI and I was a puppet the entire time 😜
but you're videos rule great editing!! ty
thanks! 🙂
Savage video! :) How many extra miles do you rack up going back to get the camera? :D Great shots!!
And also, I collected the Dinosaur magazine with the 3D poster and bits of glow in the dark bones to make up the T-Rex skeleton :D
hmm for this video maybe an extra 300meters. for the 96mile multiway hike I did in Scotland I managed to add 4miles!
@@StephenJReid Wow! 4 miles, thats a lot :D
Better you than me
Just brilliant😂👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
You can get polythene covers for your cameras.
I have one sitting in a drawer too 🙈
Shouting "BOGIES" will be lost on so many people 😂
There seems to be a shortage of Pancake reviews in your other VIDEOS! This is not acceptable Stephen I expect to see this rectified in future videos! All the best from the muffin man 😁
The muffin man?
@alexsmusicroom652 surely you know the muffin man? from Drury Lane? 😁
NOT MY GUMDROP BUTTONS!
@@StephenJReid 😂
It is so soggy over there. As an arid climate dweller, this baffles me
I was in Southern California once, found the desert and the heat to be otherworldly, was like another planet
❤ it thanks for putting your self in mucky danger for education purposes we believe u 😂 the peat bogs over Glossop way are the same walk walk ooops up to your waist in it 😉
I managed to mostly avoid the bogs above Glossop recently
That was a great "almost camp". Awful weather tho. I've seen a lot of that granite in Irish cemeteries, it polishes up beautifully. Like the tent, 20kg is my norm and it sucks 👍
thanks! I always forget that I really need to train for the extra weight in winter. I now have a kettlebell in a rucksack and am walking around the house with it
@StephenJReid "rucking" sir! Ohhh 🙀
I dont care what the other boys said but I think its interesting
😁
From a Hans Zimmer style soundtrack to Thomas the Tank Engine 😂
I do like a bit of juxtaposition
@StephenJReid I've ascended Carrs face.... never dreamt of descending it. Well done on managing that
Do you know why the train stopped operating?
