You're funny lovable badguy cliché, Jack.
"Is this plot stuff important?"
Now THAT's a Sin.
Yea I was insulted right off the bat. This is maybe the one game I've played where I legitimately cared about the plot more than the actual gameplay.
And the fact that he's distracted himself, notices it, and intentionally stays distracted is a sin for the game and not himself?
He also pulls the "I hate logos" bit that CinemaSins bleats with painful predictability. "Creators taking credit for their creation? That's a sin!" says the guy making money by tossing witless snark at another person's hard work.
I'll be honest I didn't care about the plot that much.
Scotty J and no one is going to fight you on that we just like the plot but the person is doing a sins counter and sins it for the plot
People tend to forget that Ellie was raised in a military academy, so she probably learned a lot of skills that would be useful and that's how she can do certain things in the game that you wouldn't initially expect her to be able to do.
Thalia Mirror EXACTLY! Plus why wouldn’t they teach the students how to drive different vehicles in case they’re out in the field and get stranded? No way someone would assume they’d let a team be screwed just because no one learned how to drive a stick shift
Thalia Mirror Also, she’s voiced by Ashley Johnson, which means that you KNOW she can do some badass stuff.
Some people just didn't look.
THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING. FOR FUCKING YEARS. NOBODY BELIEVES ME. I CAN FINALLY FUCKING BE PROVEN.
There’s also the prequel dlc, where Ellie was learning to survive.
I love that most of his "sins" are just literary plot devices that are used to create tension, instill emotion, explain a character's motive or intentions, etc. He's just trying to appear smart by exposing how stories are created. If he hates the idea that writers write things, maybe he should just stop consuming art.
I like how Dartigan is criticizing every single cliché for being unoriginal and repeated (even if they're used well), WHILE USING MEMES AS JOKES!!! WHAT ARE MEMES IF NOT CLICHES?
Darzeedatailorbird And also for having a channel that is, in and of itself, a lazy and obvious derivative of something much more successful.

"Dartigan seems to be completely oblivious to the concept of an ambush."
Best line. It actually started to become a shame when the ambush thing went as far as it did.
16:00 also! When enemies are aware of you, they sometimes hide behind objects and stay still. This way, on high difficulty at least, you can't actually detect them with your hearing vision! So it's still entirely possible to ambush someone in this world.
totally agreed!
yes
Арсений Брилёв In addition, in survival mode, the listen ability is disabled, so you could also argue in that difficulty universe, Joel can't tell where enemies are aside from actually hearing or seeing them.
That would've been a real criticism towards Dartigan.
Instead bobvids uses that time for a useless throwaway line.
On hard difficulties*
Additional sin: the layout of Sarah's room is actually genius, and gives us a bunch of insights into her character. Without a word of dialogue being uttered, we can tell she's a tomboy who really enjoys things like soccer, skateboarding and cheesy action movies, but she also likes to read young adult fiction and probably has a strong romantic side, and there's probably other things we can infer about her but it's been a while since I played the game. Considering we don't spend a lot of time with this character, and yet she's an essential part of the plot, these little details go a long way toward helping the player feel some connection to her as a person.
the ambush thing is so weird. If they were overpowered by brute force he'd say "looks like the one competent enemy finally showed up." An ambush is a great, classic way for someone weaker (like all the enemies are) to take down someone stronger and change the power dynamic
ThatPazuzu Something that Joel himself employs quite successfully and effectively through the game’s stealth combat mechanics.
"I just learned what a trope is and I think that every time a story uses one it's a cliche" *ding*
Just saying, watching this was a cathartic experience and I appreciate the effort put into these. If you have the energy, definitely keep these up!
OrangeVision Agreed and seconded! I'd love to see more with both movies and games.
But watching these smug ass know-nothing donkeys for any more than 10 seconds is torturous.
One of those cathartic moments for me is when he points out that no one would actually expect a zombie apocalypse and respond confidently. Anyone that claims it is on the same level as an edgelord. I have the same visceral reaction when people complain about how characters respond in a genre movie. You know the protagonist isn't crazy when they claim to see supernatural events in a horror movie because you saw it from their perspective. You know you're watching a horror movie. The police officer thinks they are a background character in a police procedural or mystery movie. You just know the person that says they'd go for a headshot if they saw someone looking like a zombie is going to be getting a psych evaluation in preparation for the trial for murdering the accident victim looking for help.

The funny thing about the guy who made the original video is that he claims TLOU's cliches and uninspired aspects are sins, while being a guy who stole the original CinemaSins guy's entire shtick. The same presentation, same bell ting, and the same smug tone. The only difference is the CinemaSins guy isn't a complete moron.
Think of it like this. Someone hated this game enough to make a 15 minute video pointing out every single thing they didnt like about it. Thats days of work. That kind of hate can only come from ignorance.
Are you people serious, or are you just pretending to be stupid? It's hard to tell sometimes, especially when I know some people actually take these "criticism" videos seriously. Cinemasins intentionally nit pic their sins, they've stated this numerous times. I'm gonna guess the Gamingsins guy is too sins he copied their schtick. So why are people acting so butthurt in comment sections?
Is it people just getting in on the joke, or are people actually this friggin' stupid? The reason I ask is there seem to be far more people acting as if they think these "criticism" videos are legit criticism, not the overly nitpicking "critiques" for comedic effect satires they actually are.
Because when the CinemaSins guy nitpicks, I can see his reasoning. This guy's nitpicks are terribly thought out. And being unoriginal isn't a sin so long as it succeeds at doing its own thing.

Oh man, I remember watching the video this guy made on DmC: Devil May Cry and when he assigned 9001 sins just for the game starting, due to "lol, it's not the classic games".
Not even CinemaSins can get that petty, nor insert a meme that outdated.

This video, and the video game, mean so much to me.
My father was emotionally distant to me and my siblings growing up, and I see a lot of Joel in him. Therapy has helped a lot and really helped us come together.
And I'm a survivor of multiple childhood sexual assaults. The scene with David was so cathartic for me and just so well done and so real. I love your comment shutting down the critics cluelessness about what was happening in that scene. It was humorous but still maintained a respectful tone toward the issue of childhood sexual assault. Which many people including the original cinema sins don't maintain when talking about, for example, which movie it's okay for them to start thirsting after Herminoie in or in the original criticism for the game, thirsting after Ellie.
I don't know if dude made his video before Uncharted 4 or not, but I was surprised you didn't point out that Naughty Dog themselves did in fact put Troy Baker and Nolan North in two lead roles in their next game!
On the Stick Troy Baker and Nolan North were in a scene together in Last of Us as well though.
@Chandler Burse Did you watch the video you're commenting on? North didn't just play David and he and Baker do have a scene together.
@Chandler Burse He voiced one of the hunters Joel "interrogates", yes. Why comment on a video that you haven't watched?
@Chandler Burse I am calm, but I apologise if I was too direct. No harsh feelings on my end.
The video even shows them in their mocap suits filming that scene (is it called "filming" in this context?) so I just don't get how someone could miss that.
You're right in that I should've paid more attention to this thread's age. I usually don't reply to year-old comments.
Regarding David and Joel not appearing in any scenes together, that's also meant to amplify how much of a threat David is to Ellie since Joel isn't there. That's why his boss fight is so scary for both Ellie & The Player
I loved the deer story! I was doing the same thing while walking one day and saw a huge buck about 4 feet away, staring right at me. I stomped to try and scare it off and it stomped right back! Deer don’t always scare easily.
Ahh, I can't stand to watch my old vids. Great job on tearing me a new one in this.
Well at least you're acknowledging the flaws in your old vids... Unlike Jeremy with his current setup.
Still better than gamingsins, their god of war 3 video was the worst shit i ever watched. It was so bad i felt insulted. I literally have ptsd because of that.
There is one thing acknowledging and correcting flaws. However, going back and looking at his video's currently... He is literally doing the same thing. I don't understand.
rude.
jambi Jambii Well, for me, at least he didn't put in a forced joke into it. There is (almost) never a moment where I didn't laugh at his jokes. The most important part is, I mostly knew when he was joking, which that is something CinemaSins can barely do!
Hey Bob, wanted to stop by and just say thanks. Your videos pretty much kind of snapped me out of the blind following mindset I had and proved facts are not overrated. I've made a couple of Everything Wrong With Everything Wrong With videos myself and I tried following examples you set here and from my other inspiration, Th3Birdman. Wish you could keep making videos like this.
Stay safe, dude!
I really love these takedown videos you do, not just because they rip apart unfunny commentary but also because you give a lot of valuable insight into narrative and characters. Please keep doing them
"spring going into fall" is funny anyway bc spring... doesn't go directly into fall.
AudreyN Maybe “Spring going into Fall” is just how morons say “Summer”.
I love how much you see in the characters and the way they interact with one another. It's refreshing.
I love these video's man, you deserve way more subs. I can't believe this Dartigan complains about cliche's and yet he has completely stolen the format of CinemaSins, I mean couldn't he have called the videos something other than 'Everything wrong with xxx' or maybe just not called them sins? The layout is the same, the pointless subtitles are the same, the ex machina/cliche/creepy jokes are the same. At least his sin timer doesn't have hours this time. Mad respect for your channel man!
I'd say it goes beyond cliche into impersonation/plagiarism territory. He probably hoped that fans of CinemaSins would see his videos and think they're from the same creators.
Only difference is that he doesn't bleep out his swear words arbitrarily.
Sam Wittsell and you can tell when dartigan is joking, unlike cinema sins
I actually like Dartigan
That guy missed the biggest sin in Last of Us; that recording from the doctor that says Ellie's blood grows cordiceps readily, thus invalidating the "we need to scoop out her brain" plot point. It really bothered me because it ruined what should have been a very dramatic part of the game, and it could have been fixed by simply removing the collectible from the game.
Sprankton Maybe it adds just another level of moral ambiguity to Joel’s eventual decision, I.e.: “What if this lethal operation that the Fireflies want to perform on Ellie proves to be ineffective or impractical, therefore invalidating the only rational justification I would have for letting my surrogate daughter be euthanized like a sick animal?”
Super late reply, but the fireflies needed to extract a specific mutated strand of the cordyceps that is only present in the brain (it is the part of the fungus that protects Ellie from becoming just a regular infected), meaning that they actually needed to get to her brain.
@@lucaomeri8730Where does it say that?
20:41 Okay, that comment (not yours, the original video) was just bad taste and mean-spirited. Talking about a character outliving his usefulness right after he commits suicide over losing a loved one is just bad.
Just thought I'd be honest here.
Yeah, it's super tone deaf, especially given how painful the scene is to watch (You'd spent enough time with the brothers to grow some slight affection for them before they died) and thus Sam's turning and Henry's suicide are just another tragedy on a game set in a world full of them. (I haven't seen Dartigan's video, but I assume he likely did something equally as tasteless with Tess' death earlier in the game)
35:40
You are both wrong. He actually does keep that knife. (it's actually just a shiv).
You'll notice after certain encounters like the sniper and entering into the dam that joel gets an extra shiv if you aren't already maxed out.
Holy shit, this Dartigan is somehow even worse than Cinema Sins.
"kid has a skateboard cliche" and there was me thinking kids with skateboards was a very common site in this day and age but nope! According to this gaming sins guy a skateboard is overused as a visual set piece which implies that it's not something you'd see in a kids bedroom very often
His criticism over a pandemic's unrealistically lethargic response has not aged well.

God please no
Game Theory doesn't get enough hate.
Should do a video on the "Why The Star Trek Federation is Fascist " Film Theory piece because I've never wanted to scream at a monitor as bad as when i watched it.
Was subscribe to Film theory and hadn't watched nay of it for like a year until I saw that video which made me scream like a banshee and punch the wall of how dumb, idiotic, reactionary and moronic it was.
John Moody Indeed! Everyone knows the UFP is communist.
Thank you for this. That guy's videos are insufferable. I know his viewers give him an out by saying "he's just having fun" but his videos are like FOURTY minutes long.
Well, to be fair, games are way longer than movies. You do have a lot to go through.
slycooper20 _ but also you don't have to go through any of it. These shouldn't exist
They shouldn't exist because the goodness or badness of movies and games has nothing to do with how many "sins" they have, like it's some kind of utilitarian calculation.
I've never even looked on Metacritic, so I don't know, but do they have complete lists of "sins" for each and every movie? If yes, then that guarantees I'll never look at the site, as it's the laziest, most shallow form of film criticism I've ever seen.
0utta S1TE also they shouldn't exist because they are terrible and they make people commit suicide regularly. That's a fact I saw it somewhere
“Utterly meaningless” is a perfect description for both cinemasins and gamingsins
I rewatch these every couple of months. I cannot tell you enough how much I enjoy them
This gave me a lot more appreciation for what voice actors do. I like watching you diss these people because at the same time you're paying respect to the creative people that put their art out there.
“It’s not individual ideas that make something original; its the combination of already existing ideas.”

Awesome video man, but in the "best lines from video games" how did you miss "There's a giant worm, AND IT'S EATING THE CITY!"
what's that from?!
I believe it's referring to Gears of War 2. The line is actually, "Anya, it's a giant worm! They're sinking cities with a GIANT WORM!"
That's the one, I remembered it wrong.
Either way, it should definitely have been in there :D
I dunno man, "ICICLE DISASTERRRRR." is really damn good.
I can't believe you missed "Master of unlocking..."
Was there ever a point where ____sins type of videos made good points while being witty or have they always grasped for straws due to lack of paying attention?
I've heard tell that the earlier CinemaSins videos do make some good points, but those videos were usually about 5 minutes long. They've since expanded to 15 probably due to the average investment in a UA-cam video being that long, and so that they seem like they're smarter.
The ad revenue obsession gets the best of us, I'm afraid.
Washu Hakubi Occasionally they catch things like bloopers.
I'm pretty convinced that people originally watched because they pointed out valid fridge logic, and as you mentioned bloopers in films you mightn't have noticed otherwise. However the only change I've ever seen in Cinemasins myself is they "broke" the sins counter and now they do the previously mentioned fridge logic critiques even less.
Dartigan has his moments. TLOU and Uncharted 4 are not his best o videos.
Also, ValeforXD is actually good, but he's only done the Ratchet and Clank games.
They seem to pay too much attention to small details, that they overlook some big things. Hell, the guy in this video did as well at certain points.
Thank you. Thank you. Didn't realize how much I crave intelligent comedy until this. And also, the plot and acting in this game is better than a lot of movies. I'm a grown man and some of the cutscenes legit made me cry. The only thing I have to agree with CinemaSins on is the awesomeness of that line delivered by a little girl in a jail cell, just the sheer ballsiness of it, I cheered.

It's the voice acting, man. The way Troy delivers that line "you are treading on some mighty thin ice here" just gives me chills every time I watch it. Of course the writing is great too but the performances were something else for this game.

Thank you for the point about cliches. People acting like "cliche" is a bad thing always, all the time has annoyed me for as long as I've noticed it.
Clearly if somebody thought about it they'd realize that cliches can act as short-hand for authors (or directors, or screenwriters) in order to package a large amount of information in a small amount of exposition. It can be easier and more convenient to use cliches sometimes in order to focus on those elements of the story that truly matter because time is finite.
Also, it allows for satisfying subverting of cliches later.
Dismissing anything as cliche if you see it for a second is lazy and stupid, as evidenced by "exposition news broadcast cliche". Oh, you mean that on the news they're talking about stuff that's newsworthy? Indeed, what a cliche. That'd be like if you turned on ESPN and sports were on, or weather updates on the weather channel.
Should kids in video games not be allowed to play sports, because that's a cliche? Or have glasses, because that's a cliche too?
There's nothing I hate more than intellectual laziness, and goddamn does CS (and knockoffs) really embody that most frustrating and annoying of qualities.

hey bob your delivery for sin 90 was fucking 10/10. love it.
Video games sins is weird because it appears to only be cinema sins applied to video games. It just focuses on plot beats and story elements. When actually, because of technical limitations, trying to appeal to diverse audiences, and how immature the artform is, there are LOADS of actual things to complain about in terms of gameplay in almost every single game. AND there are more misused tropes and cliches where pointing that out would actually be valid.
Please do more of these.

3:48 the "exposition news broadcast" is actually a very good and effective SUBVERSION of the cliché, as the explosion that happens in the broadcast also happens outside the window, which is a very good "oh shit" moment, that CONNECTS you to the "remote happenings on the tv", which is... well... opposite to what the news broadcast cliché is. and a very cool and strong and well done moment.

Technically, it's not a zombie apocalypse either, sense the infection, doesn't actually turn people into zombies, in fact, it doesn't actually kill, just takes away any & all control, they had over what they do.

Another interesting thing to point out in regards to the "being surprised attacked despite being able to pinpoint locations" thing is that in the survival difficulty, your listen ability is disabled, so you can't tell where enemies can be other than actually seeing them or actually hearing their noises without a highlight.

Oh my god, making this must have been so insufferable until you got numb to it.
Dude, thank you so much for making these, they've become some of my favorite videos on YT.
I can't emphasize the rebuttal of the "Ellie can drive" sin enough. It reminds me of the Rey critiques in The Force Awakens. If we start having to show our characters learning any skills that become useful later, our movies/games/whatever medium is going to be way longer than necessary and be super fucking boring.
An important line Joel issues to Tommy, "...seen her take in enough spores to take down a dozen men... Nothin'..." is pretty good evidence for the spore sticking to clothes critique. It shows here that there's an amount you can breathe in. And the fact a grown man might be able to take in an amount before being affected, where women and children might not as well.
2:08 Yeah, I never really understood this as a sin myself.
5:28 Alright, people. Be honest here. Do any of you guys read the newspaper on the toilet?
10:30 Not surprising to me that I’ve heard this exact same sin in another video just like this. Recycled sins.
Do you think that infected can open doors?
You see, this is part of the reason of why I love Bill. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Maybe that’s also another reason why Frank left Bill. ‘Cause he was jealous. 😏😂
16:27 Yeah. He literally says, “We only take what we have to.”
20:33 Does that look like a bite to you?
21:43 I would argue that the problem with that line is the delivery. Instead of sounding skeptical, Tommy sounds oblivious. Instead of sounding like, “Immune to WHAT, Joel? Are you serious? Stop being ridiculous. None of that crazy talk,” Tommy sounds like, “Immune to what? There’s a pandemic going around? I had no idea. I’ve been living under a rock for 20 years.” There’s curiosity, and then there’s disbelief.
Also I love how everything is explain and tie together, beautiful video
Okay, but the "20 YEARS LATER" "thanks" joke kills me every fucking time and I have no clue why.
Please, please, PLEASE make more "Everything Wrong With Everything Wrong With" videos. These are SO GOOD!
This was actually very refreshing to watch. Glad it was informative and provided reasoning as to why things happened. Sad that majority of it would have been considered not a "sin" with common sense and reasoning, but oh well.
Look forward to some more of your Everything Wrong With videos!
For sin 39 about Ellie driving stick, it's also made obvious in the DLC and the American Dreams comic that Ellie has received military training to some extent, so it's completely possible that some of that training up til now has included learning to drive.
Jeez I can't imagine music and sports being something a kid in Texas would grow up with.
this is what i was saying while watching this!! im a texan and we are all about that shit
'spring going into fall'
15:20, in the DLC if you shake the skull in the Halloween store, she asks it the question "Will I ever get to drive a car again?"
Hey, I just found your channel and I have to say, I'm really upset I didn't find it sooner.
That cliches rant at the beginning really hit home for me, I never thought about it like that before. Great observation!
the fact that in the middle of his video about the last of us this guy just straight up outs himself as a pedo is bananas
15:31 personally for me the joke/sin was an American knowing how to drive "stick" as you call it, let alone a child. Like it's actually a theft deterrant there because so few people can drive manual.
Love this/these! I watched CinemaSins for a while but stopped on account of it being bullshit - great counter-criticism on this & the others. My only counter sin to these is there aren't more of these, I was hoping for a massive binge shitting on CinemaSins! Keep up the good work =D
Spring going into Fall? This dude hasn't heard of Summer?
