    Grafenwoehr was actually a pretty nice duty station. It built up alot more than it was than when I first got there in 2007. What a fun experience the whole place is!

    0.5‰ is the limit when you drive without an accident or noticeable problems.
    When the police thinks you are driving conspicuously or you are involved in an accident you can get it trouble with 0.3‰
    So one normal beer to your meal when you eat outside is really the limit.
    When you eat outside and you want to have some kind of beer, take Radler or alcohol free wheat beer (Weizen). Alcohol free Weizen is closer to the taste of its alcoholic variety than other alcohol free beers. That is what a brewer told me.

    • @Keltachran
      @Keltachran 5 років тому +1

      Best thing to do in Germany: dont drink and drive, even when its hard with all the good beer. Like its sayed the Alcohol free ist also very good.

    Oooh, moving from San Diego to Germany is going to be a biiig change.
    Got some relatives in South Pasadena.
    Welcome to Germany.
    Hopefully you will like it here.
    Some tips:
    Get used to the 'brisk' weather. Cold, rainy, foggy in autumn, some snow in winter (probably), strangely sweaty hot in summer.
    No AC nearly anywhere.
    Recycling is key.
    Central heating via radiators is normal, no air heating usually.
    But the housing on base looks somewhat 'Americanized' so it might be more similar to what you are used from home.
    Careful on the Autobahn. No passing on the right, at any time while the traffic is still flowing faster than 60km/h (appr. 40 mph) and its not congested.
    You are only allowed to pass on the right if all lanes are congested and the traffic is flowing at a speed of 60 km/h (40mph) or lower.
    At all other times only pass to the left. If you are in a lane and there is a reasonably large gap to your right and you aren't driving faster than the traffic to your right, please move over. It's called the Rechtsfahrgebot (the drive right requirement). Sure, it's not necessary to weave in and out of traffic, just use your common sense, but do try to clear a lane reasonably fast.
    On the left lane always check your rear view mirror. There will ALWAYS be someone faster than you, given enough time. Even in areas with speed limits.
    Careful with the current, its 230V, 50Hz, not 110V, 60Hz. Even if you've got a converter the Hz can screw over timed devices because the timing is calculated by the Hz which is not changed by the smaller converters. Especially clocks on the current tend to run slow very quickly if you brought some from the States. Nope, they ain't broke, it's just the current.
    Possibly on base it is converted to 110V, but I'm not sure about that. The sockets do look like standard Schuko-sockets (Schutzkontakt, safty or protection contacts) that are standard for Germany.
    German's will correct you no matter what. We are just that way. It's not meant to be hurtful or insulting (at least most of the time) but it might come across as rude.
    Most of the time the Germans just want you to learn a bit. Apologies if that bothers you.
    If you give even the slightest indication that you want to learn and use German in everyday situations most Germans will be very accomodating to accents, little foibles, etc.
    Now, enough doom and gloom, have fun in Germany and Europe. Because you will have awesome chances to travel around Europe easily during your downtime.

    • @filmsmith
      @filmsmith  5 років тому

      Wow, thanks Rusty! Where were you when we moved? We could have used all that information months ago! We learned pretty much all of that by now, but thank you so much for the detailed comment :) Thank you for being yet another helpful and welcoming German.

    Your house looks odd to German eyes. You hardly see any top loading washing machines in Germany and I never so that kind of plugins in Germany either (Because of the different voltage and frequency). Do you have a converter to 110V already installed in the house?
    And I loved the mishap when opening the door to the terasse for the first time :-)

      Hi Makenzie! Our situation might be different because we live on an American Army base. We didn't have to look for housing or get Visas or run into some of those difficulties that you might run into.

      Kenneth, my wife works as DOD civilian for the army. So she is my sponsor and they pay for our housing. We are very very lucky to be here.

    the sockets show this place is planned for foreigners (4.42) as well the writings in english (heating) and the A/C's (normal houses don't have) ....not a surprise knowing that there is a big US-Army camp.......with a few words: travelling like a snail in your own house.......Even the word " 3 bedroom-house" is unusual since nobody cares you use those rooms for bed's, toys, gym etc.
