Making Friends in Germany - A Local's Tour of Weiden

- In this Video, I go to the charming small city of Weiden, Germany and meet up with some new friends of mine that live there. They show me around the farmers market to try different local foods, experience a tour of the Gambrinus Brewery, and enjoy a hilltop view of the city. During our very eventful day, we talk about a few differences in our cultures, including what it takes to win the heart of a Bavarian.

We certainly don't need even more tourists in Regensburg, but at the same time I really want to show as much as possible of my beautiful hometown to the world. 1.) I really like the photo-montage technique you're using. You pack so much into the time you've got. And I guess that reflects your attitude toward spending your time in Germany.
2.) "In America, for some reason, we wash the eggs." I wonder what that reason could be.for doing that. :) I couldn't resist.
3.) The bread lady is a great example of the wonderful people you're getting to know there.
4.) This is only from my perspective, but putting the words special and sausage in the same sentence....?
5.) Using opening the beer vat to reveal not what we expect is very, very, VERY good. Similarly good is the suds recede showing the beer toast. Who told you to do that? Chelsea?
6.) Excellent touch with making friends and introducing them to us. Thank you

German: Video ist ok aber du könntest mal anfangen deutsch zu lernen.
German English: Video is ok but you could start learning some german.

machtharry Does Bavaria have a different language or dialect other than traditional German? Is there a language only spoken in Bavaria. Also, if I learn German, and I travel to Southwest Germany, what can I expect when I try to communicate with residents there?
@@donnawoodford6641 Well there's a different dialect spoken in every region of Germany, but you can expect the locals to speak standard German with you
Hi Donna,
yes there are some very strong dialects in many regions of Germany and you wont be able to understand them. As standard german is a northern dialect the southern ones will be harder to understand for non native speakers.
The thing is tough that everyone is able to speak standard german as well as the local dialect. As soon as people realise that you dont understand the local dialect they will talk in standard german to you.
I am lucky to understand almonst all dialects to some extend as im from the southwestern most part of the country. So southern dialects are close to my own while northern ones are close to standard german. North german native speakers though are usually not able to understand southern dialects. So people here are used to talk standard german to others.
So communicating with everyone wont be a problem but dont expect to understand local dialects.
@@donnawoodford6641 if you speak standard german, youll pretty much understand every dialect except for some few words, and they are pronouncing the words a bit different, but you will understand them and if not, everybody speaks standard german
Thanks to the author of this thread and to everyone else on it. In the States we have little realization that a "standard" German exists and that it can ease understanding between Germans with different regional pronunciation (and even vocabulary) backgrounds. Donna's question shows she's thinking ahead.

Yet another place in the area that I need to go to before I move eventually. - I also have something for you, since I got the impression you like a) walking/hiking b) beer. There are quite a few "Bierwanderungen" in Oberfranken so if you haven't done one of these I would really recommend doing that :D I know the "Brauereienweg" and "Bierquellen-Wanderweg" but I'm sure there are more depending on where you want to go / which area you want to exlore (and since literally every village in the area has a brewery you can also come up with your own route - just try to end up not too far away from a place with a train station (Neuhaus, Weiden, Bamberg, Kulmbach, Bayreuth, Pegnitz, Weiden come to mind) cause the bus situation is... well, let's say not ideal)

Gambrinus is not the only Brewery in Weiden, though. There are still small brewery like in old town area you just stood in front of one: The Bräuwirt.
They even have a tour there with beer tasting and a small Brotzeit, give it a try.

Flex Great idea. I wish I could go along on the trip to Vienna. Especially if the tour included a stop...or two or three at Demel's.
Forget Demel's, just a tourist trap. Josef Brot is where it's at when it comes to food quality. Cafe Boheme for its exceptional Marillinknödel is also worth it, to put it mildly.

I've had friends who traveled to Vienna bring me back Mozart Kuglen in the past. They were delicious, better than chocolate here in the States.

Great video. Hope you enjoyed your first taste of horse meat. Its pretty common here, specially one German dish would not be possible without horse meat in it... Rheinischer Sauerbraten. I personally have horse on my plate at least every two weeks.
No it isn't. Most sauerbraten is made with beef. Many butchers wouldn't even sell horse meat, beacause of the customers reaction.
I personally have tried it and it tastes a lot like beef. Sauerbraten was invented to make the chewý meat of an old horse after years of work in front of a plow or an carriage eadible. It wasn't a matter of choice it was just available. (For those who dont't know: the meat is pickeled in vinegar. salt and spices for several days before roasting it for a long time. It is very tender after that process.)
@@matekochkoch I never had Sauerbraten in a Restaurant in the Rhineland area that wasn't made with horse meat. And in Düsseldorf alone I know three butchers that have all sorts of horse meat products on sale, plus there is a specialised butcher on the Carls
Market.
@@matekochkoch it's not just your perception, it's a fact that in and around the City - with the ugly Cathedral - food wise the only highlight is Bloodsausage with Applesauce and a brew served in laboratory glasses. I was forced to live there for a while.

Haha! Must have been our doubles. We haven't explored that area yet and Chelsea wiped out on one of those scooters last year... so we don't ride those anymore.

If you happen to be in the cologne area, make sure to visit the very beautiful Bonn, the former capital of west Germany and host to numerous international institutions. Lots to see, especially the museum of the Haus der Geschichte www.hdg.de/en/. It would be a pleasure to show you around. And of course, lots of good food and beer at the rhine.
