A real piece of football history. Uruguay becomes the first World Champion. This was the first time Fifa organized the event in conjunction with the Olympic committee, and professional players were allowed with no age restriction. We are also seeing here the invention of the 'Victory lap' by the Uruguayan players. They went on to win the gold medal again in 1928, this time in the Netherlands, beating Argentina in the final. It was this Uruguayan supremacy in world football at the time that made them the logical candidates to host the first standalone Fifa World Cup two years later in 1930, which once again, they went on to win, beating neighbours Argentina once again in the final. In protest, the Uruguayans chose not to participate in the next 2 world cups, not returning to the world stage until the 1950 World Cup held in Brazil. The never yet beaten Uruguayans, made it all the way to the final where they met the hosts and outright favourites, Brazil. Playing at a full capacity Maracana stadium, built especially for the tournament, and in front of an estimated 200,000 fans (largest crowd for a soccer match to this day), Brazil only needed a draw to lift the cup. The first half finished with the Brazilians ahead by one goal and the crowd going mad with excitement. However, the Uruguayans had something to say about that. Riled by their captain, Obdulio Varela, the Uruguayans started the second half on a mission, and they accomplished it by scoring two goals, beating Brazil on home soil, and becoming world champions for the fourth time (this is the reason why the Uruguay shirt has 4 stars on it, one for each Fifa organised world championship). The Uruguayan reign over world football came to an end in 1954 when Uruguay lost to Hungary (after extra time) in the semi finals of that World Cup. Many felt this game should have been the grand final, as both teams were considered the best in the competition. This game ended up being so even, that it is still considered today by many experts to be one of the most exciting matches of all time. Incredibly, this tiny nation of just 3.5 million people called Uruguay, had never lost a game in a World Cup until that fateful day in 1954. Thank you for this gift, Peter
