    Looks like that last one was over 15lbs I can tell by his movements and thickness, I caught one once 15lbs and took me some time to land it I thought I got stuck on the bottom during a boat trip.

    Great video. You had a good day on the surf, what size hooks did use, and do you prefer j hooks or circle for surf fishing, also do you prefer fish finder rig or high low rig, I appreciate any advice .
    Thanks Ken

    I was just watching your vid again so cool, but realized in my last vid i was using the same reel but i think greg made it bailess like yu mentioned great stuff Dave!

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому

      I should have mentioned the reel on your last vid, can't believe that slipped by me! Yeah man, great spinning reel for the money since it is water tight. Not totally sealed like a van staal but it can be dunked and splashed without issue. Just not worked underwater. Think Greg has the bls model of the spinfisher v in your vid (which improves good line management avoiding nests). I have the base ssv version but still manually flip the bail.
      Greg looks familiar too. Do you know if he fishes at great kills? thought I saw him in passing once or twice granted it is a big park, lol. Thanks for the view again Jerry! How's the action at JB? Been slow my me. Bass at night on chunks but early morning work puts me in bed by that time :(

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay 8 років тому

      Good stuff! Yea Gregory does go there time to time so you may have seen him there. It was a good week lots of blues with some size and a few basshopefully it lasts!

    What would you suggest for taking some young 12-14 teenage boys out to surf fish? Looking for easy rig and frequent catches. Not looking to land anything big just have fun. Will be in the Salvo area next week.

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому

      Pretty much what you see in this video if fishing on the northeast coast. Main line to a swivel, 3 feet of 50 pound test fluro or mono as a leader with a sinker slider. That is then tied to a snap swivel which holds the bluefish hooks which I put cut bait on. Some worms on a simple high-lo rig with a sinker on bottom will do fine too.

    thank you sir for the most excellent vid
    so just wanted to note the good luck you had to have not a single bite off
    I mean I guess you are trying for a lip set and you succeeded excellent
    right sometimes they lip set themselves
    but just saying how pissed I am when I could have used a steel leader
    lastly
    did you actually carry all five fish off the beach or did you dress them there
    thanks again'
    really loved it

      +jeffrey paris Thank you Jeffrey for your comment! Same here about not being prepared with wire leaders... there's a video of me getting bit off last year while using lighter tackle during a blitz. Only had 30lb fluro since I was fluke fishing.
      As for these fish I threw them all back. only keep them when they are in the 3 to 4 pound range on occasion. If I had a smoker I would have kept the last one.

    Is it better to use that rig than one with floats on it or does it not matter? I realize it's probably too early for crabs but just wondering if there is a reason why bare hook is better?

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому +1

      Had the crabs simply swim up and grab the ones with the floats too so it doesn't really matter. The float may cause some drag and kill the cast a bit too, but no good reason why I use bare hooks otherwise.

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому

      Hey Jake.
      Your best bet are two things. First nothing beats knowledge from a local fisherman, nothing! So just scout the beach and talk to some folks who are catching and ask what gear they're using, the rigging, bait choices, lures, times to go, etc.
      The second is to ask folks in your local bait and tackle shop pretty much the same.
      For me to give you specific tips that help me based on conditions where I fish might not pan out so well in your area. Hope that helps. Tight lines man

    • @MrXinsizionx
      @MrXinsizionx 8 років тому

      This might sound hard but once you understand, it's not that hard. You have to learn how to read the water on the beach. Scout at low tide and be aware of clues on the shore line. You can find plenty of videos on this topic. Good luck!!

    • @williamthebastard513
      @williamthebastard513 7 років тому

      MrXinsizionx On low tide, look for sandbars, fish in and around them (depending where your located) because they trap baitfish, or you can just chase the birds

    hello, I am brand new to fishing. can you cast from the beach with a 8ft pole? thanks.

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому +1

      +Leanne Jones So long as you're throwing small pieces of bait with a light sinker, say 1 ounce it should be fine. Otherwise you may pass the ounce rating on a rod that size risking damage when casting.
      Longer heavier-rated 10 or 11 foot surf poles can handle heavier bait loads and also get them out further. If you are only throwing lures in the 1/2 to 2 ounce range a pole that size should be fine for that though. Hope that helps! Good luck out there too!

    • @leannejones4902
      @leannejones4902 8 років тому +2

      +Relax and Fish thank you and it does. I think I am going to head out tomorrow...I may give it a whirl if it isn't to windy.

      @relaxandfish  8 років тому +1

      +Leanne Jones Much welcome, ask anytime! Keep us posted on how you did out there. Btw, where are you fishing out of?

    • @leannejones4902
      @leannejones4902 8 років тому +1

      +Relax and Fish I have only been to pier 10. I think that is where I will be today. I may venture to the shoreline right beside there...tips are needed and welcome!!

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому +1

      +Leanne Jones Sure, first do you see anyone catching nice fish around that spot on the shoreline? If so then you know it's good so long as you can reach a little water movement or depth. I always like to fish in a spot where there are bait fish around or have recently been around too. Try and time it where you are fishing either the first or last 90 minutes of a tide phase granted there is way more to it than that, but that's just one general concept.
      Use bunker as bait cut into about 2 inch pieces on 6/0 bluefish hooks with a 2 ounce sinker, more if your line moves over too much and if your rod can handle it. Also once you get used to catching a few, crush the barbs on your hooks with your pliers to make them easier to remove. Always watch those fingers around a bluefish of any size.
      Also be close to your pole and ready to grab it to set the hook a bit and have your drag set tight enough to where it takes some effort to pull off the reel but not too tight where its locked up or takes a lot of effort to pull line off.
      Hope that's enough to get you started. You'll get some tight lines out there and report how you did.

    hi man is SHIMANO CATANA OR OKUMA HEXANA GOOD FOR BLUEFISH

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому

      Just saw this now. Never used either reel, but I do have a Shimano Spheros that has been going strong and smooth since 2013. As for the Catana, if you haven't purchased one yet go with the 4000 series which I believe is the largest. It can hold about 170 yards of 30 pound test braid, a bit more with 20lb, either line strength works... and puts out a 13 pound max drag which is plenty for slowing down big blues. They'll make nice multiple runs, but won't come close to emptying that capacity. If you hook a large ray that's another story.
      Also consider the Penn Pursuit II which is a similar reel with greater line capacity and max drag.
      Hope this helped...

    • @MC-mn3nd
      @MC-mn3nd 8 років тому

      :D i mean rod.I chose okuma dead ringer.Is the rod good for the money.I am noob in the spining ,so the rod is cheap.It is going to be my first spining rod.
      Thank you!

    • @relaxandfish
      @relaxandfish  8 років тому

      Ah, got you, thought you meant reel since the Catana is a reel.
      As for a rod Nothing beats an Ugly Stik surf rod for the money. not the best casters, but enough to get a chunk out for bluefish. Great for the value. Never used rod from either brand you mentioned so can't give a solid recommendation on them.
      Tight lines out there!
