Back in Sept 1977, i arrived from Malaysia as a young student to study A levels at the North Devon College. Those two years were some of the best experience of my life, this video brought back many happy memories.
Excellent walk-around. I was there in the late 50's when Barnstaple and area had over 90 pubs, all making a good trade; no closures. The market days here and surrounding towns meant pubs open all day; these days varied from town/village.....so...handled correctly, and with enough money and transport....you could drink all day, for most days of the week!
Great video. Just shows much the town has declined over the years. I remember it back in the 60's when there were many thriving private businesses etc. not forgetting Bonnis in Boutport Street, the Ice Cream Parlour on The Square and the many butchers in Butchers Row. Me and a mate would ride into town on our motorbikes most Saturday mornings, go into a music shop (Morrishes?) in Boutport Street, listen to the latest singles before buying one (3/3d) then go into Bonis for a frothy coffee and play the juke box and pinball machine. Such a great time to be a teenager. Good to see Banburys are still there despite people preferring seemingly to shop on-line or in one of the many supermarkets. Back in the day nearly every road/street in and around the town had a 'corner shop' where you did your daily shopping where you would buy sufficient but no more for the family dinner. Two pound of spuds, four sausages, four slices of bacon, two eggs, a loaf of bread (there was only one type!) a tin of baked beans for dinner plus two bananas as a treat. Served usually by a man in a brown smock who was often smoking while he sliced the bacon!!
Nice video. Not much going on in Barnstable. Pretty deserted. I guess your Poundland, is like dollar store in the us,where items are suppose to be only one $. Enjoyed hearing the church chimes. ⛪.Will look forward to your next video..🤗
@@recall2880 It's pretty hot but rains in the summer a lot lol. I mean it's pretty good and it's like close to 5 beaches so yeah I don't really know what to say.
I wasn't there on the Saturday but i expect it was. I'm hoping to go back on a Saturday and film another video. Hopefully should be much busier then :)
Good video. The town does look a bit run down in places, sadly, like many towns now and hopefully the anti social behaviour, I have heard about will be addressed, ot it will deteriorate like many other UK town centres
Awesome video - best part is at 02:52 :) look above Cafe Nero sign!!!

Impromptu striptease

Sad, dirty place compared to 10years ago
I’m slightly disappointed as it’s more scruffy than I expected.
Trees were not of any significance when these streets were laid out
