I watched this video at least 20 times during my first lined dress project and it turned out great! Thanks for making such a great tutorial!!!
🥳 woohoo 🙌 I’m so happy it turned out great :)
i adore you! I bought an old pattern that didn't quite fit me and had to build the dress as I went with VERY little sewing knowledge. I have torn apart all your various videos and learned to put an entire dress together with your help!
I just can't get enough if your tutorials, they are so informative...
@@maritzalove2157 awww 🥰 thank you 😊
You have the best comprehensible video on how to add a lining and invisible zipper. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome. Thank you for watching & happy sewing 🧵
Anastasia, thank you so much for this tutorial, I finally understand how to finish the zipper off. The way you explained and showed the whole process was the best. Love your dress, it looks great on you. Thanks again.
Thank you 😊 I’m happy this tutorial helped!
Wow you’re such a great teacher and your video quality and zooming in action is spot on. I’m subscribing!
Welcome aboard!n🎀
Thank you for posting this video, Im sewing a dress and now in time to do a lining too. You are such a great teacher! xoxo
What great timing! If you have any questions let me know. Thank you for watching.
Great tutorial! Psychedelic squirrels are never a wrong choice! ❤️🐿 Your advice to understitch the neckline is spot on. I love how neat and tidy the top of the zipper, self fabric, and lining all look.
I personally have a really hard time getting the lining at the bottom of the zipper to lay right and line up all tidy. My solution is to sew the center back seam of the lining from the hem up to the bottom of the zipper before I attach it to the zipper. Then I do what you did to stitch it to the zipper tape.
The fabric is amazing for sure. Great idea about sewing from the bottom up! Thank you for watching.
Your Tutorial is very simple. I’ve been struggling with this . Thank you so much❤❤❤
You are very welcome 🤗
I hardly use lining in clothes but you made it look very easy. Where I'm from I usually hot and rainy so its not feasible for me. But thanks so much for sharing your video with us.❤❤❤❤👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Glad it was helpful! I live where it is cold so I need lots of layers! I wish it was warm here all year!
❤ nice and clear for me a beginner, thank you! I’ll be back often. 😊
Happy sewing :)
Yesssssss !!! Thank you so much !!!! Seriously my teacher left for the day and I was super nervous about putting in the lining with an invisible zipper it came out sooooo good thank you !!

Super helpful!! Thank you☺️☺️
I’m so glad you found it helpful! 😊
this was so helpful! Just wondering - many patterns come with front and back facings - do those just get left out if you are lining?
Girl, you are such a hero! I was struggling to understand how to do this but you explained and showed so well!
thank you so much! ❤
Happy to help!
Great video! I was worried about my lining showing. So glad you told us about that trick!

Thanks for this video. I’ve used the information in this video to add linings to so many dresses. ❤
woohoo 🥳 This is great to hear! Happy sewing 🎀
Thank you! It was very helpful.
Excellent 😊
Anastasia, thank Y💖U very much for this beautifully & fun essenced detailed guide. I really needed to see a quality review so I can start lining my own dresses. I’m sure you already know this & assume it’s a given, but for any newbie sewers; if could just make 1 suggestion that I learned that REALLY makes the difference for a finely tailored outcome. It is so important to get in the habit of PRESSING (not ironing back & forth) the seams after EACH time you sew them. For two reasons. 1.) It heals or closes back the holes made from the needle in the fabric. 2.) It leaves all your seams NICELY flat & smooth for a beautiful couture like finish. The result is a beautiful drape with no bulkiness or puckers.👗🪡🧵✨🎉💞🥰🎶
P.S. If your fabric is mid to high end buy 1/4 yrd of white organza fabric or pressing fabric & place it on top of your fabric, then press it. This ensures your beautiful fabric is not altered by the heat in any way (i.e. makes it shiney or dull.) Also, use the correct heat setting for that specific fabric. Thank you again & HAPPY SEWING✨💞✨

Awesome work
This was such a helpful video! I was intimidated with attaching the lining to the zipper, but your way of teaching is so comforting it made it do easy! Thank you, and subscribed!
I'm so glad! This is great to hear and thank you for subscribing! ❤️
I love all of your videos and watch all of them! I had a question and maybe you can help me with us, how would a line a button down shirt dress?
I would trace out the sleeves and body pieces and sew the lining by the cuffs, collar and placket.
Thanks sooo much for sharing!❤️❤️❤️
You are so welcome!
I'm making my first ever lined dress. Your video is just what I was looking for to help me with the process. I'm making up the pattern as I go along and have decided to add a contrast waistband between the bodice and skirt. When I do the lining, is it best to do exactly the same and add a waistband, or can I just extend the bodice to the same length it is with the waistband?
Brilliant tutorial!! thank you
This is incredibly helpful! I have made lined dresses before, but I had a really hard time with the commercial pattern instructions around the zipper/outside fabric/lining fabric (I ended up hand-stitching the lining to the zipper tape, which actually worked fine, but was REALLY SLOW). THIS is awesome! Question: what are your thoughts on assembling the lining FIRST as sort of a "muslin" for a garment?
Thank you for watching. 💕 Why not assemble the self pattern pieces as your muslin sample ? I mean if the lining is the same sure but sometimes the lining is bigger so I wouldn’t suggest doing that for a test fit.
So cute!
Thank you :)
So that's what I did wrong lol everything! 😅 I tried lining a dress recently but I sewed it in as I went...and things got really wonky by the end. I'll try this next time. Thank you!
@@wow_icangetcraftytoo welcome. Good luck on the next dress. I’m sure it will go great!
I'm so loving your videos! I'm still confused on how to stitch so necklines don't flip back over though. Oh and this was such a fun and pretty dress!
Love all your videos could you please show how to stitch a lined blazer
I love this tutorial and this dress. I'm going to make it in deep red, vavavoom
I'm making a chiffon dress that has 3 tiers with lace trim between each tier. Should I just sew lining to each rectangular tier and then sew it all together?
First I want to say how much I appreciate your videos! I have a dress that I'd like to line. The dress has 4 vertical pleats at waist line. Do I do the same with the lining?
This tutorial is fabulous! So happy I found your channel and have subscribed. I do have a question/request. Could you please do a tutorial about lining fabrics? I have some gorgeous voiles and lightweight linens that I want to sew up but they need linings. Since they are 100% cotton, is it essential that I use 100% cotton lining? If I prewash/preshrink both fabrics, can I use an Imperial Batiste to line dresses made with translucent or sheer fabrics that are 100% natural fibers? I can find imperial batiste at a local shop but it is a poly/cotton blend. The only other thing that I have found nearby is the Symphony broadcloth at JoAnn which is also an appropriate weight but also poly/cotton blend.
So happy to find your video, it was easy to follow how to add a lining to a dress with an invisible zipper. Thank you! Also, where did you find your squirrel pattern fabric? I love the fabric and such a beautiful dress. I will be dancing rock and roll on stage in a few months and your dress and the fabric would be perfect.
Thank you! Will it be the same process for a sleeveless dress (with lining and zipper)?
Yes it will
This tutorial is so informative and fun!! What fabric so you recommend for lining?
For a fancy lining I would use a plain silk like china silk or a bemburg rayon lining. Otherwise anything thin & smooth to the touch. You could even use plain cotton if u don’t need it to be smooth.
Thank you so much 🥰
🎀🎀❤️🥰
Thank you! This video is so helpful!
I made a dress but didn’t realize how see-through the fabric until I finished😅
So I want to add a lining to it but my dress has pockets on it and I was wondering if I should just sew around the pockets kind of like you did with the zipper or is there a different way for pockets?
The lining goes on the outside of the pockets. So you don’t put pockets in the lining. Just remake your dress with no pockets.
Thank you
You're welcome
Can you possibly do a tutorial on lining a dress with armholes and sleeves please....
I can.
Enjoyed your video. You made it look so easy. How do you sew a lining when the dress has a top on
Can you explain more? I don't understand exactly what you mean by "the dress has a top on". Maybe you mean a facing (a small inner layer near the edges), or a ruffle on top maybe?
Thank you for sharing ❤!
Thanks for the helpful video! When you attach the neckline of the dress to the lining, you sew at a 1/4” seam allowance. So you basically lose a 1/4” at the neckline of your dress? Would you recommend adding a 1/4” to the neckline if you’re starting from a pattern vs. an existing dress? Thanks again!
One more thing - how would you recommend sewing a lining in a dress with ruched sides? The pattern uses the side seam allowances for the channels of the ruching. I considered leaving the sides open prior to connecting the necklines, but then I end up with my fashion fabric on the inside of my garment. If I add the channels on both pieces separately first, then I need two sets of straps and the seams are bulky. I thought about using the inside of the lining/fashion fabric as the ruching channel, eliminating the need for the single fold. but I’m not sure how to do that cleanly. What’s the best option here? Any advice would be much appreciated!! Thanks again!
That was very weird - I JUST had a thought about this….and there’s a video about the exact same topic! Thank you! I got two kinds of cotton (because I don’t totally know what I’m doing) and one is a little thinner.
Ha! How awesome. We are on the same wave length. Happy sewing.
Is there a breathable fabric that works best as a lining under a see through blouse? What kind of fabric did you use for your lining? It looks almost a bit stretchy. Thank you again for always posting such useful content we can apply right away!!
Hello, I love this video!!!! Would I need to allow extra seam allowance to the dress for this? Would it make the dress smaller?
You always need seam allowance.
Thanks alot. Where to sew first when joining dress
The neckline like in the tutorial.
I see that you saw the lining to the neckline at 1/4 inch. Is it because that's the seam allowance for that specific pattern, or is it done with every lining? Also, my dress has sleeves (which I don't need lining for). How do I approach attaching the sleeves?
@@ivonneperez88 Most necklines are sewn at 1/4 inch. If you are using a pattern check its seam allowance. You can sew the armholes together since you are not adding sleeve lining.
@@SewAnastasia thank you!
Okay this is beautiful what If am adding hands?
@@TheGospelthroughFashion hands?
@@SewAnastasia yes
Thank you for this helpful video! What do I do if my dress has pockets?
No pockets in the lining.
Wow ! Merci beaucoup! ❤
💕💕💕 Thank you for watching
Could we take the lining all the way to the end of the outside fabric so the hems are sewn together? What might we need to do so the dress isn't bulky or stiff with that approach?
Yes you can do that. Its a bagged lining. If you have any curves you can clip them so they lay flat.
great video, if i was to do a underlining instead would it be okay to.
Yes but u don’t want to see raw edges through a sheer fabric ….. if I’m understanding you correctly.
I'm very new to sewing. What type of fabric do you normally use for a lining? Did you use quilting type fabric in this video?
There is actually a section for lining at the fabric store if you want a standard lining but technically you can use just about any fabric for lining as long as it is of similar weight and/stretch.
This is great for when you’re sewing your own garment but damn I need to add a lining to dresses I bought and didn’t make. I obviously don’t have patterns for it other than using the dress itself as a pattern.
I was looking for pattern to make a slip but no luck on simple slips.
Can you make a video on how to add a lining to ready made dresses and a simply slip?
I would love this too!
great to know. I have a pattern for a simple slip. I will have to put it out. Thank you for watching.
Awesome. I will put out a simple slip video soon.
Nice. What if I just want to line the skirt part of a dress?
You can totally do that. Just sew the lining into the waist seam or side seams.
I’m doing my first lining for a cotton dress, is there specific cotton lining fabric or can u use polyester with the cotton or broadcloth, 65 poly/25 cotton?
You can use a poly lining or just use the cotton as a lining. They both work. It depends on which one you want against your skin. You could always get a thin cotton voile too as lining.
Is this the same dress that you put in bra cups into in a previous video? I am assuming they would be sandwiched in between the finish fabric and the lining?
Great video. Clear instructions.
Yes it is! You are so right. The bra cups are in between the layers.
would this work on a box pleated skirt? im working on one right now and im thinking of adding a lining
Yes, just make you lining 2 inches shorter :)
Thanks for this! I'm working on this skill right now :) Any tips for installing boning in a dress bodice? I find the whole idea very intimidating but so many of the patterns I want to sew need boning
I totally need to do a video on this! There are a bunch of different types of boning. I would suggest poly sew on boning with out the casing. I like using that one the best but they all work so it’s just a personal preference.
My suggestions are to make sure you keep it 1/8 inch away from your seam allowances & wrap or cover the ends cause they get sharp!
Hello. Thank you for your tutorial😍. I wanna ask you. What the name of fabric that you used for lining?
I really enjoyed this video so much and your dress is super cute! What fabric did you use for your lining?
Thank you. I used a poly lining fabric for my lining. You could also use a light cotton or a china silk. Happy sewing!
I’m looking for a tutorial showing how to add a lining to a ready made pair of jammies. I have a red checked flannel that is super cute but I want to add warmth. Do you have a tutorial for this?
I do have a few videos for adding lining. Check out the one I did for a red skirt. I trace out the garment to make the pattern. ua-cam.com/video/2UCCdsTlcJQ/v-deo.htmlsi=s9JrUQnDvkgJgoRq
Thank you for this tutorial. Can you do one on collar band.
Sure. What exactly do you mean by a collar band ?
I am sewing Butterick Pattern B6852 and the collar band instructions are not clear. The collar band attaches to the collar and then shirt. I save ALL your instructions and refer them them often. Love, love, love your tutorials. Thank you
Thank you!
Is there a way to add pockets in a dress when you go in to add the lining? I can't figure out how I would do that through the outer AND the lining fabric!
How do you attach the lining if it is a sleeveless dress with armholes and shoulder seams. Thanks!
Good question! In a very specific way. I do not have a video on that at the moment.
What sewing order would I follow for a sleeveless dress?
This is a sleeveless dress. Do you have more specific questions?
My dress pattern has arm/neck hole binding. I'm thinking I would forgo the binding if adding a lining? Thanks to anyone who can offer feedback!
I have black sequin fabric I want to put over a bodysuit and skirt I have. Do you have any videos for that? Can I even do that?
I have some videos on working with beaded and sequin fabrics.
Do you have an additional tutorial if the dress has a sleeve?
I don't but it is roughly the same process. Create 2 dresses and sew around the neck and then you will need to finish the bottom of your sleeves. I do have a video on replacing the lining in a jacket or making a fur jacket and I go over how to sew sleeve lining.
Anastasia how would you like e a sleeveless dress?
What do you mean?
What if my pattern has a shoulder and armhole with sleeves or sleeveless how to finish that??
What if you want to add lining and/or pockets to a garment you didn’t make? (so you don’t have the pattern pieces for it)
@@kateisaacson4766 You can trace the pattern pieces out from the garment & make a pocket pattern of your choosing.
Does my dress need to be completely sewn with zipper in before I add lining? Or can I add lining at the same time?
There are many different ways you can attach a lining. If you want it to be finished by the edge of the zipper how I did it then you will need to add an invisible zipper first. You can sew the lining to the dress 1st then treat the back like it is one piece of fabric and not two. The downside is that is you can see the seam in the inside. That way is a more fast fashion approach to it but hey they both work and there is a time and a place for all techniques. Thank you for watching.
What kind of fabric is best for lining?
Anything light weight. It could be thin cotton or a satin or a china silk or a rayon bamberg.
How does this work with a gathered pattern please.
Measure the gathered section by measuring the hem or if stretchy by stretching it out.
What if you have a premade dress with no pattern? It just needs a lining otherwise it's too flimsy.
@@artboxfashion4042 You will need to travel out the pieces. It’s easier to wear a slip under it though. Maybe try sewing a slip?
It finally makes sense
Woohoo 🥳 thank you for watching .
Thank you so much for sharing this video! It was extremely helpful. And the psychedelic squirrel dress turned out great!!! 😊
Now I want to make a dress with a fun pattern haha I'm thinking cats as I'm a cat mom! 😆🐈⬛
You're so welcome! Thank you for watching. OMG yes. Send me a pic of your dress with the cat pattern. I want one too.
hi! why didn't you attach the lining to the zipper? how does the lining stay in place?
At 10:44 I’m attaching the lining to the zipper.
How would this work with a pattern that used facings and sleeves. Would I replace the facings completely?
You can sew the lining to the facing. Basically remove the facing pattern from the lining but make sure you have seam allowance.
How do you do it if you have an ordinary dress with sleeves….
exactly… i am making a dress that needs to be double lined but it has shoulder seems and sleeves. i have no idea how to move forward with it since i cant find help anywhere:(
How would you sew/ attach a lining to a dress with arm holes?
I was just about to ask the same question! I'm struggling with this too
